Rogers cuts short break to help Derbyshire

Chris Rogers will cut short his agreed break to help out Derbyshire. The club confirmed to Cricinfo that a joint decision had been made between Rogers and Derbyshire to contract his holiday from four or six weeks to two.He was scheduled to take a rest from the rigours of year-round cricket after playing a full season in Australia prior to arriving in Chesterfield, however Mahela Jayawardene’s unavailability has led him to agree to the fortnight off. Jayawardene cancelled his deal because of international commitments, while Derbyshire had no plans to find a replacement for that period, particularly having signed Wavell Hinds. Rogers’ agreement, however, will be an undoubted boost.John Morris, Derbyshire’s head of cricket, said: “It was always planned that Chris would take a mid-season break and we are delighted it is going to be a short one. He has been in excellent form this season and we want to ensure he is firing on all cylinders at the business end of the summer.”He will miss the opening stages of the Twenty20 Cup but could play a part later on, it will depend on how we are performing in the competition and how Chris is feeling then.”Rogers’ break begins at the end of the Championship match against Worcestershire which starts on Friday 6 June.

Sri Lanka players given IPL go-ahead despite clash

President’s intervention
  • Thursday’s decision by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) followed the country’s president Mahinda Rajapakse issuing instructions that the board propose alternate dates for the tour or decline the ECB’s invitation. This in turn came after Rajapakse received a copy of the letter sent by the team to SLC chief Arjuna Ranatunga seeking a clarification on the tour and noting that they had been previously promised by SLC that the “IPL window would be clear in 2009 and 2010”.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has decided to allow its cricketers to play in the IPL next year despite the fact that the league clashes with Sri Lanka’s tour of England. The move could have far-reaching significance for the game, with England’s players – who missed out on the IPL’s first season – likely to push for the chance to play next year.”We will be taking up the matter with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) shortly to find what alternatives we can arrive at without upsetting both parties,” SLC chief executive Duleep Mendis said on Thursday evening after a meeting of the board. “The players were already committed to playing in the IPL for three years [2008-10] but have assured us they will give the 2011 tour of England top priority ahead of the IPL. Taking this into consideration we couldn’t let them down.”It’s understood the ECB has already signed a tour contract with SLC for three pre-Test warm-up games, two Tests, a one-day practice game against Somerset and three ODIs that will be held between April 21 and May 30. The tour details were announced by the ECB on Tuesday.Mendis said the compromise with the ECB would be to change the dates for the two Tests and three one-day internationals or to send a combined Sri Lanka team without IPL players. He conceded, though, that the ECB has not agreed to replacing the two Tests with five ODIs. “These are issues we need to thrash out with the ECB,” he said.An ECB spokesman told Cricinfo, “We have not had any official confirmation from Sri Lanka Cricket but they have spoken of seeking a compromise so we shall listen to what they have to say.”The 13 Sri Lankans on three-year contracts with the IPL franchises include Mahela Jayawardene, their captain, Kumar Sangakkara, the vice-captain, and Muttiah Muralitharan. Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, has already announced that the second season of the lucrative Twenty20 tournament will be held from April 10-May 29, 2009.The tour was firmed up during the recent ICC conference in Dubai, where Sri Lanka’s interim committee chairman Arjuna Ranatunga agreed to the ECB’s request to fill in the slot vacated by Zimbabwe for the 2009 season.

Pakistan likely to slash ticket prices

Pakistan are planning to slash the prices of tickets for next month’s Champions Trophy after experiencing near empty stands for the Asia Cup games earlier this summer when the ticket rates were very high.A seat for the Pakistan-India match in a decent enclosure in Karachi’s National Stadium was reportedly priced around Rs 3000. Shafqat Naghmi, Pakistan Cricket Board’s chief operating officer, said on Wednesday that the tickets would cost almost 30-40 % less than those in the Asia Cup.”We want to ensure that all Champions Trophy matches attract sizeable crowds and will take all possible measures for it,” Naghmi told the . “We will consult the ICC and try lowering the ticket prices.”However, the PCB and the ICC now face a big challenge because the eight-nation tournament will be played during the fasting month of Ramadan. Normally, Pakistan doesn’t host international series during this period and it remains to be seen whether spectators will fill up the stadiums during the tournament. To facilitate the spectators, it has been decided to time the matches in such a way that the innings break comes at time when one breaks his fast (at dusk). Efforts are also being made to provide for free meals for spectators but implementing such an idea would cost the PCB around Rs 15 million.

Asif wants B sample test postponed

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif has asked for his B sample test, which had been scheduled for July 28, to be postponed. His lawyer, Shahid Karim, wants more time to prepare for the case and make travel arrangements.Karim said Asif has yet to receive the required documents from the Indian Premier League authorities relating to the A sample test, without which he could not prepare for the case.”From the IPL we certainly want the documents that relate to the procedures they adopted for the ‘A’ sample test and we are entitled to have them,” Karim told . “We also want certain documents from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that might be relevant to the case.”ICC anti-doping regulations provide players and/or their representative the right to be present when the B sample is opened and analysed. That means Asif and his lawyer will have to travel to Switzerland, where the testing will be done in a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-accredited laboratory. “We will not be able to make all the travel arrangements to Switzerland by July 28,” Karim told Cricinfo. “The visas have to be processed and documents have to be obtained.”The IPL announced on Monday that Asif had tested positive for a banned substance, following which the Pakistan Cricket Board suspended him.

Dumped Symonds back in the nets

Andrew Symonds has joined his good friend Matthew Hayden for a net session in Queensland in what is believed to be his first hit-out since being banished from Australia’s squad. Symonds took the opportunity for some practice on Friday, the same day he was left out of Australia’s 15-man touring party to visit India. The reported that Queensland were hopeful the allrounder would be training with the state squad within a couple of weeks. He has reportedly already spoken to Phil Jauncey, the sports psychologist who will help Symonds through his rehabilitation program organised by Cricket Australia. However, Cricket Australia stood firm on Symonds’ situation and told the selectors he was not ready to be considered for the India trip. Aside from a brief statement that shed little light on his situation, Symonds has not spoken publicly since being sent home from Darwin for going fishing when he should have been at a team meeting.Symonds’ general attitude has been a concern for Australia over the past 12 months, a period during which he was subjected to monkey chants during an ODI series in India and was then at the centre of a racism controversy with India’s Harbhajan Singh. The incident resulted in Harbhajan being initially banned for three Tests but then cleared on appeal.Adam Gilchrist, Symonds’ former team-mate, believes the batsman remains upset about the racism episodes. “I think it is fair to say that Andrew Symonds is heavily affected by the last year’s incidents,” Gilchrist told .”I can’t speak for him as in what he was thinking but it is difficult to explain things. It is a common problem or issue and it is only going to be increased with pressures and intensity and the scrutiny that these players go through.”The loss of Symonds, who has averaged 77.70 in Tests in the past year, is a big blow to Australia’s middle order ahead of the four-Test tour. Harbhajan, who will play in the series, is keen to put last season’s controversy behind him.”I would prefer to look forward,” Harbhajan told the . “He is obviously a great player and there is no doubt about his ability to change a match. He has done a lot for Australian cricket. I hope he is well, and that he is getting better.”

New Zealand expand domestic Twenty20

New Zealand’s domestic Twenty20 tournament has been expanded from six to eight rounds as the short format’s popularity continues to increase. New Zealand Cricket has released its domestic schedule for 2008-09, with the State Championship beginning in November and the State Shield set for December to February 1.A dedicated spot has been set aside for the State Twenty20, which will be the only domestic cricket on the calendar from February 4 to March 1. Justin Vaughan, the chief executive officer of NZC, said the expansion of the Twenty20 tournament was logical considering the success of the IPL and the inaugural World Twenty20 last year.”Twenty20 cricket offers high octane entertainment in a condensed three-hour window, and is bringing in record crowds both to live games and televised matches,” Vaughan said. “It simply makes sense for NZC and our major associations to expand that offering in this year’s schedule.”Extra matches will also be televised in the Twenty20 tournament, which will feature the former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming leading the Wellington side. His team-mate Matthew Bell has been handed the Wellington captaincy for the State Shield and the State Championship.”We have a very good all-round team with plenty of talent and I’m convinced we can make a big impact in the three competitions this summer,” said Bell, who previously led Wellington from 2000-01 to 2005-06.
