It would appear that Liverpool are currently preparing themselves for something of a midfield clearout this summer, with the likes of Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner all out of contract in just a few weeks' time.

Outside of that trio, the Reds do appear to be in need of something of an evolution in the centre of the park with the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson all in and around their 30s, with manager Jurgen Klopp potentially needing to have a succession plan in place to be able to build a new team for the future.

In the case of Henderson, in particular, the former Borussia Dortmund boss could already have a dream heir to the long-serving skipper in the academy ranks, with 19-year-old, Luca Stephenson – who also joined the club from Sunderland back in 2018 – having the potential credentials to step into the Englishman's shoes.

Who is Luca Stephenson?

The teenage sensation has drawn obvious comparisons to the Liverpool skipper after making the move from the Stadium of Light just under five years ago, with Henderson having previously made the switch from the Black Cats to his current side on a £16m deal back in 2011.

The likeness between the two midfielders goes beyond those Wearside connections, however, with Stephenson also a real relentless midfield presence after averaging 1.3 tackles and winning 86% of his ground duels during his three EFL Trophy outings earlier in the campaign.

That combative nature is undoubtedly alike to that of Henderson, with the 32-year-old having been described as somebody "you want with you in the trenches", in the words of club legend, Graeme Souness.

Stephenson is not merely just a hard worker, however, having also been hailed as a 'creative player' by the club's official website, with that again furthering the comparisons to that man Henderson, whose ability to create is showcased by the fact he ranks in the top 4% among his European peers for progressive passes.

The teen gem – who was previously lauded as "superb" by journalist Andy Kelly back in October – has enjoyed a promising campaign thus far at youth level to date, with the £760-per-week maestro scoring once and providing two assists in 26 games across all fronts.

A chance to shine in the first team has yet to emerge for the precocious talent to date, although with the impending departures on Merseyside this season in the midfield ranks, there could be an opportunity for Stephenson to stake his claim sooner rather than later.

While his compatriot Henderson won't be ready to relinquish his regular role any time soon, it is pleasing to note that Liverpool do have a possible heir to the experienced asset already on their books.

Tottenham Hotspur were often accused of not quite backing Mauricio Pochettino, who has easily earned the most success of any manager to grace North London in recent memory.

The Argentine came in when the club was at a real low, and steadily propelled them up the Premier League table and into consistent contention for top four.

As their rise up the league continued, so did their spending, culminating in the two windows during the 2017/18 season that welcomed a few big names. The failure of many of these acquisitions could well have contributed to Daniel Levy's thinking, when he refused to sanction a single signing the year following.

Whilst Davinson Sanchez might steal the headlines for his failures after such a lofty price tag, it perhaps papers over further cracks in the form of Serge Aurier and Lucas Moura.

The latter remains at the club to this day, although his £90k-per-week deal is due to expire this summer, and has been quietly draining the club whilst offering little in return.

His best goalscoring season within the Premier League only saw him hit ten goals, struggling to surpass a tally of four every other year.

Journalist Paul Canning had warned of the "wildly inconsistent" winger after his £25m move from Paris Saint-Germain, and his performances across his five-and-a-half-year spell in north London have only proved him correct.

Whilst the initial fee might have seemed like a bargain at the time, the hidden drain on the club's resources is often the astronomical salary. Having sat, quietly earning with each season, the fee the 5 foot 8 speedster has commanded through wages alone has nearly overtaken his initial transfer sum (£25m).

Therefore, the total cost that Moura has seized amounts to a whopping £50m.

Pochettino did plenty right during his tenure at Spurs, but at times his transfers were left lacking. In this particular deal, nearly four years after his dismissal, one such failed deal continues to rinse the club until his expected exit this summer.

Journalist Alasdair Gold has slammed the "madness" at Tottenham Hotspur as Gretar Steinsson and Andy Scoulding emerge as candidates to replace Fabio Paratici.

What is the latest on Fabio Paratici and Spurs?

Spurs are currently on the hunt for not only a new manager but also a managing director of football with two Italians leaving north London recently.

Indeed, the Premier League side parted ways with Antonio Conte and now Paratici has followed him out the door, having just resigned after losing his appeal when trying to overturn a 30-month ban from football for his role in alleged false accounting at Juventus.

With that in mind, it's not hard to see why Gold has dubbed it a bit of a mess when talking on YouTube channel. At the same time, he also revealed a couple of potential internal solutions to replace the 50-year-old Italian.

He explained: "Gretar Steinsson was at Everton, but it was Marcel Brands who was technically the sporting director, director of football-type.

"And Andy Scoulding was chief scout at Rangers before he came to Spurs. So it would be a big step for both of them.

“But then, I guess, Steve Hitchen did that in the past – he was chief scout, I think, originally, and then he stepped up to become technical performance director, which was essentially a sporting director. And he ended up working quite well with Poch.

"But I don't know which way this is going to go. It's mad. It's absolutely madness.”

Who will be the next Spurs sporting director?

Steinsson joined the club as performance manager back in the summer of 2022, after a spell with Everton where he worked his way up to becoming chief scout.

With that in mind, he should know English football well and may well be capable of helping the club land new transfers but it remains to be seen if he'll be the right man for the job.

Alternatively, as Gold mentions, Scoulding also has experience as a chief scout in British football, having worked with Rangers before also joining Tottenham last July.

In the meantime, a statement from Daniel Levy has revealed that Scott Munn will oversee all the departments as chief football officer.

The chairman explained: "This has been a stressful time for Fabio and his family. We wanted to ensure that we allowed for due process to be followed. Fabio is a man who lives and breathes football – we wish him well.

"As outlined in our year-end results, we started several months ago to restructure our football operations and last week announced the appointment of Scott Munn as Chief Football Officer to head up all the departments. We shall continue to strengthen our football functions over the coming months."

Jurgen Klopp will be hoping to end the season on a high note as Liverpool are on a four game winning run and with European football now looking like a real possibility, how they perform over the next few matches will determine which competition they will enter next term.

The summer will be one of transition for Liverpool, much like their season, with plenty of transfer activity planned in order to shape up a squad – midfield in particular – ahead of an assault on trophies next season.

One player who must be ditched is Naby Keita, and with his contract expiring at the end of the season, it’s the ideal time to let him part ways with the club, especially after an injury-plagued time in Merseyside.

The £120k-per-week liability has missed 22 games due to injury already, making only 13 appearances during 2022/23 and an average Sofascore rating of just 6.47 certainly suggests that freeing up space in the wage budget by releasing him could allow Klopp to bring in a younger, more talented midfielder.

The Anfield side have spoken to Sporting CP behind the scenes regarding midfielder Manuel Ugarte according to reporter Bruno Andrade and it has been reported that he has a £53m price tag, which is more than affordable for the club.

What is Manuel Ugarte's playstyle?

Signing a midfielder is arguably top of Klopp’s priority list this summer, especially with the stagnation on show throughout this season. As such, Ugarte could be a wonderful signing.

The Uruguayan won't give Liverpool goals, as he has scored just once for Sporting in 87 games, however, that doesn’t matter as Klopp will be signing a combative player who can win duels in the middle of the park with ease as the 22-year-old has previously been dubbed a “midfield machine” by scout Jacek Kulig.

Ugarte’s influence in the heart of the Portuguese side's midfield is evidenced by the fact he currently ranks in the top 1% across the globe's next 8 best leagues (outside of the big five) for pass completion rate and tackles won, while ranking in the top 5% for aerials won, ball recoveries and interceptions, suggesting he could be incredible for Klopp as his midfielders this season have failed to show their usual bite.

That tackling stat is particularly appealing with Jordan Henderson (worst 17%), Naby Keita (51%), Fabinho (54%), Stefan Bajcetic (52%) and Thiago (top 8%) ranking below him when compared to positional peers in the top five leagues.

Statically, therefore, Ugarte is one of the finest defensive midfielders on the continent. £53m perhaps sounds a lot on the surface yet taking a look at his figures across the previous 12 months, this could represent a real bargain, especially considering he has just turned 22 years old.

This summer could be the most important during Klopp’s eight-year association with the club, and he will be under pressure to bring in the correct players ahead of next term.

Although the £85m paid in the summer might have been far too much money, the potential is clearly there that suggests one day this might not seem like such a ludicrous fee.

Willing to run all day and shoot whenever the opportunity presents itself, when compared to other strikers across Europe, the "insane" Nunez – as dubbed by journalist Casey Evans – actually stands up quite well. He ranks in the top 1% for total shots and non-penalty goals, as well as the top 6% for progressive carries, via FBref.

Given the rivalry he will seek to spark up with Spurs' fellow South American defender, the 23-year-old could terrorise Romero with or without the ball at his feet.

Against Newcastle United, the Argentine failed to deal with numerous lofted balls in behind, scrambling to thwart the threat that Alexander Isak posed with little success. Now, with the improved quality of delivery from Virgil van Djik or Trent Alexander-Arnold to feed Nunez, this could be further exacerbated.

Although the former Benfica striker might have been relegated more recently to cameo appearances from the bench, there is arguably no better time to reinstate him into the starting lineup when his pace and physicality can prove so devastating for Spurs' star centre-back.
