Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc may be back playing cricket in October after injuring his left leg in a freak accident. He was with the rest of the squad in Sydney earlier this month, taking part in a catching drill when he collided with training equipment. The laceration was so bad that he “could see a couple of bones” and needed approximately 30 stitches.”The knee is fine, which is the biggest positive,” Starc told the Cricket Australia website. “I didn’t really think I did anything bad. It wasn’t until the doc started talking about what could have happened and what might be an issue [that I started to worry] and I had to have an x-ray.”When they were cleaning up the wound the nurse actually said ‘There’s your patella tendon, there’s no nicks in it’. The fact that he could see my patella tendon was a bit of an issue.”Irrespective of the injury, Starc had been rested from the ODI tour of South Africa. He was phenomenal in the searing heat and on helpless pitches for fast bowlers in Sri Lanka – 24 wickets at 15.16 apiece and a strike-rate of 25.8 – and the team management had wanted to keep him fresh before the home season began in November with Test matches against South Africa and Pakistan. But two weeks ago, during a routine practice session at Hurstville Oval, things took a bad turn.”We were doing a fielding test as part of our Australian camp before the boys left for the South African tour,” Starc said. “We were doing high catching out of a ball machine. It was quite a windy day so I’ve gone after this ball to try and catch it and it was getting away from me and [I] slid to catch it.”The next part of the drill – which was meant to happen later down the track – was throwing down stumps, [which were] set up behind us. I unfortunately slid into the metal plate at the base of the stumps.Irrespective of the injury, Mitchell Starc had been rested from the ODI tour of South Africa•Associated Press

“I caught the catch so I’m happy about that, but in the process took some large chunks out of my leg. I looked down and there was a big hole in the pants, [I] saw a flap of skin and threw my hand on it to try and stop anything that was going on. I couldn’t see much. Then the pain started to get a lot stronger and kept hitting me and I thought something might be a bit worse. The doctors came over and I couldn’t watch from there.”I didn’t quite know the extent until I was in the back of the ambulance when the doctor was explaining how bad it was. You [could] see a couple of bones. I didn’t want to look at it at all. They numbed it pretty quickly so I couldn’t feel too much.”Starc was treated at St George’s Hospital for four days but has since returned home and was scheduled to begin working at the gym on Wednesday. While he was happy to “finally get back into some work,” there was the odd inconvenience. “It’s a weird feeling being in a knee brace not being able to bend my leg knowing that my knee is okay,” he said. “It’s just to keep the flaps of skin on there to heal properly.Come October 25, however, Starc hoped to shift his inconveniences onto the opposition batsmen for that is when his state side New South Wales play their first match of the Sheffield Shield season – under lights – against Queensland.”I want to play that one, and being a pink ball game at the Gabba it’s going to be new for the NSW team and for me as well. That’s still my goal, to be right for that Shield game and obviously we’ve got to factor in some workloads when I’m back bowling first and foremost.”If that’s out of the picture the next one is being right for the preparation for the first Test [against South Africa on November 3] and making sure I don’t miss any games for Australia.”

ZC condemns alleged racist abuse of Waller

Zimbabwe Cricket has released a statement condemning the alleged racist abuse of Zimbabwe batsman Malcolm Waller by a section of the home crowd during the second Test against Sri Lanka last week

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has released a statement condemning the alleged racist abuse of Zimbabwe batsman Malcolm Waller by a section of the home crowd during the second Test against Sri Lanka last week.Waller is understood to have lodged the complaint when abusive comments were directed at him after he dropped a catch on the morning of the fourth day of the Test. Fielding at square leg, Waller missed an easy chance off Asela Gunaratne’s bat in the middle of an otherwise tight spell from quicks Carl Mumba and Chris Mpofu. Zimbabwe went on to lose the Test by 257 runs, conceding the series 2-0.”Zimbabwe Cricket was deeply disturbed by the conduct of a section of fans who made abusive and racist chants targeted at our players during Zimbabwe’s just-ended Test series against Sri Lanka at Harare Sports Club,” ZC’s statement said. “We condemn any act of racism, abuse or intolerance in cricket, in particular, and sport, in general.”The chants appear to have come from the section of the ground known as Castle Corner, where fans traditionally gather in boisterous but good-natured support during international games. This is also the area where members of the Zimbabwe Cricket Supporters Union (ZCSU), an unofficial body that mobilises support for the national team during home games, can usually be found.”We are also disappointed by such racist rants, if they were really made,” Tapfumaneyi Vivian Banhire, chairman of the ZCSU, told . “Our supporters union has no such members who engaged in such behaviour.”Banhire confirmed his organisation’s position to ESPNcricinfo. “It wasn’t any of our guys,” he said. “Zimbabwean supporters are not racial at all.”During Zimbabwe’s last home series against India in June when the home side was thrashed in all of their matches, disgruntled Zimbabwe fans vented their frustrations by holding up a variety of homemade signs, some of which suggested that Zimbabwe cricket players should be arrested and “face treason” over their performances.”The fans made themselves clear during the India series and I believe the players had got the message, therefore there was no need to continue with waving such cards again,” Banhire said. “The fans are very happy that we have come this far.”ZC is continuing to investigate Waller’s complaint, and warned that it is “taking steps to introduce sanctions against those involved in such incidents”. The ICC’s anti-racism code requires members to impose punishments, including possible life bans, on anyone found guilty of racial abuse.

Liverpool Could Form Deadly Duo By Signing £34m ‘Baby Kaka’

Liverpool are reportedly "firm favourites" to complete the signing of Celta Vigo prodigy Gabri Veiga this summer despite heavy interest from several other top European outfits.

That's following a recent report from the Northern Echo, which claims that while Newcastle United remain interested in the Spaniard, Liverpool have the edge and could look to complete a swoop this summer following a lacklustre campaign that has underscored the need for fresh faces.

James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all depart the club this month upon the expiry of their contracts, and while Alexis Mac Allister has been landed from Brighton & Hove Albion for £35m, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is scouring the market for two further additions.

The aforementioned report states that while Veiga is contracted to his LaLiga outfit until 2026, he holds a €40m (£34m) release clause, and with Chelsea and Real Madrid among the lucrative pool of suitors, Liverpool could secure one of the most coveted prospects in European football by procuring his signature.

How would Gabri Veiga perform at Liverpool?

Anfield would only benefit from signing a precocious talent in Veiga who plundered 11 goals and four assists from just 28 starts across his first full season in top-flight football, described as "dangerous" by journalist Euan McTear for his exploits.

The Sky Blues talent already ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for rate of non-penalty goals, the top 20% for rate of assists, the top 12% for progressive carries and the top 12% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref, and has been hailed as a "gem" by Romano.

He has been heralded for his aptitude at driving the ball up the field in order to wreak havoc from just behind the frontline, which is evidenced through his previously stated metrics, and he could blossom into a world-class star under Klopp's tutelage on Merseyside, boosted by a burgeoning strike-force that could play to his strengths.

Namely, he could meld seamlessly with Cody Gakpo's skill set, with the dynamic Dutch forward demonstrating his prowess since signing from PSV for an initial £35m in January despite entering the outfit at a time of much strife, plundering ten direct goal contributions from 26 matches and earning acclaim for his "stunning" feats by Alan Shearer.

With the £120k-per-week ace tipped to flourish "in the [Roberto] Firmino role" by Richard Jolly, forward-thinking midfielders such as Veiga would see their game enhanced by such a vibrant and all-encompassing talisman.

CodyGakpo of Liverpool

Indeed, Gakpo ranks among the top 10% of forwards for rate of assists, the top 17% for shot-creating actions, the top 8% for progressive passes and the top 15% for successful take-ons per 90, which illustrates the selfless work that allows teammates to receive and increase of opportunity in attacking transition.

And with Veiga proclaimed to be "baby Kaka" by football content creator Rimedi, it's clear that the fleet-footed and adroit pair could weave between each other in intricate, sinuous patterns, with the balance and elegance of ballroom dancers and the nimble-limbed precision of a renowned sculptor.

It may well be a match made in heaven, and one that Liverpool's technical director, Jorg Schmadtke, must work tirelessly to achieve; it could be the inception of an illustrious new era on Merseyside.

Wolves Keen On Making "Interesting" Move For £113k p/w Ace

Wolverhampton Wanderers could make an 'interesting' move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia this summer as part of an 'overhaul in their midfield' under Julen Lopetegui, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

What's the latest transfer news involving Geoffrey Kondogbia?

As per AS via Sport Witness, Wolves courted Kondogbia in the January transfer window and have now decided to return to try and secure his signature this summer.

Old Gold boss Lopetegui is seemingly keen to strengthen his engine room in the off-season and Kondogbia has been identified as someone who 'fits' the bill at Molineux. It is believed that Atletico Madrid expect to accumulate between €5-6 million (£4.2-5.1 million) for the £113k-a-week ace.

According to RMC Sport via Get French Football News, Lyon are also targeting a move for Kondogbia as they look to acquire a defensive midfielder at the Groupama Stadium.

Nevertheless, Lyon will not compete in continental competition next term, which may put a spanner in the works for the French giants in their attempts to land the Central African Republic international.

Football scout and agent Berk Bekgoz recently spoke about the latest state of play involving Kondogbia's future on the Taktik Mania YouTube channel, which translated to:

"Geoffrey Kondogbia will meet with Wolverhampton this week. If an agreement could not be reached, the player's manager made an appointment with Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş. He will come to Istanbul and the meeting will be held."

Speaking to Football FanCast, transfer insider Jones believes that Kondogbia would be an 'interesting' addition at Molineux this summer.

Jones told FFC: "It's an interesting name to be thrown in there. I think that obviously Wolves are looking at a bit of an overhaul in their midfield this summer and so they need some new spirit in there and I think that that could potentially be a name that fits."

Would Geoffrey Kondogbia be a good signing for Wolverhampton Wanderers?

Kondogbia is an experienced figure – hailed a "monster" – who has starred at the elite level for the likes of Inter Milan, Sevilla and Valencia in the past and would be a potential bargain for Lopetegui as he looks to reshape his midfield at the Old Gold.

As per Transfermarkt, the 30-year-old enforcer made 27 appearances in all competitions for Atletico Madrid in 2022/23, registering two goals in the process.

Geoffery Kondogbia plays for Atletico Madrid in La Liga alongsideAntoine Griezmann.

WhoScored also takes into account that Kondogbia was strong in the tackle in La Liga and successfully won around 1.9 challenges per match for his side in the Spanish top-flight.

According to FBRef, the Nemours-born midfielder excelled in comparison to his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions concerning interceptions, nipping in to steal the ball 2.41 times per 90 minutes across the last 365 days, putting him in the first percentile for this metric.

Looking forward, bringing in Kondogbia may be a wise move from Wolves as they eye consolidation in 2023/24 following a close shave with relegation.

Gameplan is to attack spinners – Vijay

M Vijay acknowledged his failings against the short ball and said his gameplan was to back his core game after striking his eighth Test century on the third day of the Mumbai Test against England

Sidharth Monga in Mumbai10-Dec-2016M Vijay is difficult to slot into one genre of batting. He has T20 hundreds, but is one of the best defensive batsmen going around in Test cricket. He strikes at around 46 runs per 100 balls, but is already only one six short of getting into the top 10 six-hitting Test openers. Only one of the 10 ahead of him is a defensive batsman: Navjot Sidhu, who similarly attacked spinners.Just like the cricketer that he is, Vijay is an emotional person, but doesn’t open up with many. Having addressed a press conference after scoring his eighth Test century, one that put India in command in the Mumbai Test, Vijay was walking off when he called out a journalist he knows. He told the journalist to make an announcement on his behalf: that he wants to dedicate this innings to the father of a close friend back home who died on the first day of the Test. That he was sorry he couldn’t be there for his friend, only whose first name he gave: Srinath. This was a century that came after failings both similar and uncharacteristic. Vijay is known for scoring big at the start of a series and then fading away, but these failures were coming against the short ball from somebody who has tackled it with aplomb all over the world. Vijay is, in fact, one of the best – if not the best – leavers of the ball. Vijay acknowledged that failing.”I did think about it [short balls] because I was playing at the balls I should be leaving generally,” Vijay said. “There are lot of other factors to it. I don’t want to reveal them. But yeah, the definite gameplan is to back my core game, believe in it and come back fresh, and to play this Test match the way I wanted to play.”The eight-day break between the third and fourth Tests perhaps turned this into a bit of a start of something new. “The break helped me,” Vijay said. “And it helped everybody, I guess, to go and rethink and come back better.”One of the first successes for Vijay was hitting an overpitched Adil Rashid wrong’un for six, which resulted in Rashid being taken out of the attack at a time when spinners were troubling Vijay. “Actually, my gameplan is to attack the spinners because I don’t want them to settle in one particular area where they find it comfortable,” Vijay said. “I just wanted to use my feet and use the depth of the crease, and play according to my gameplan. It came out pretty well, I guess.”Asked to rate this innings vis-à-vis his others, Vijay said: “It is special because I started off well in this series,” Vijay said. “And then a couple of matches I couldn’t play the way I wanted to play. I was getting out too early. I just came out with a much clearer mindset in this game. And I just wanted to back my instinct and play.”The innings was special not least because it – with the help of a Virat Kohli masterclass – has given India a 51-run lead with three wickets in hand. Considering how much the ball has turned, that is a massive lead.”Definitely [in control of this match],” Vijay said, “because any lead is gold in this wicket. During tea time, we just thought get close to their target, but the way Virat and Jayant Yadav are batting, I think we are in a pretty good position.”

Uncapped Ferguson in NZ squad for Chappell-Hadlee Trophy

Auckland fast bowler Lockie Ferguson was rewarded for a bright start to the domestic season with a place in New Zealand’s 14-man squad for the ODI series against Australia next month

Auckland fast bowler Lockie Ferguson has been named in New Zealand’s 14-man squad for the three ODIs in Australia next month, following his bright start to the domestic season. Legspinner Todd Astle has also found a place in the squad, displacing Ish Sodhi, who had played in the ODIs in India. Batsman Henry Nicholls makes his way back into the ODI fray as well.New Zealand ODI squad

Out: Corey Anderson (unavailable), Doug Bracewell, Anton Devcich, Luke Ronchi, Ish Sodhi, Ross Taylor (unavailable)

Seam-bowling allrounder Colin de Grandhomme has entered the ODI squad following an impressive Test debut, taking the place of spinning allrounder Anton Devcich. Colin Munro been included in the squad after missing out in India through injury.Batsman Ross Taylor – who will have eye surgery on Wednesday – was unavailable for selection. Fast bowlers Adam Milne and Mitchell McClenaghan, and allrounders Corey Anderson and George Worker, are all out through injury as well. Wicketkeeper-batsman Luke Ronchi has been left out, with BJ Watling preferred.Ferguson, 25, has only played eight List A matches in his career, but has claimed 16 wickets at 28.12 in them. It is his recent first-class form that makes for encouraging reading: he has match figures of 5 for 101, 4 for 107 and 6 for 89 in his most recent Plunket Shield games. New Zealand selector Gavin Larsen said Ferguson was effectively a like-for-like replacement for Milne.”Lockie has bowled with pace, and with Milne not available through a series of injuries, Lockie was the obvious guy to step up,” he said. “He bowls consistently in the 140kph range, and clicks over 150 every now and then. There is some real gas to Lockie Ferguson. There’s an element of surprise and no batsman likes bowlers who are up at that pace.”De Grandhomme’s inclusion is no surprise, as his aggressive style of play had long made him a limited-overs international candidate. His seven wickets and quick runs in the Christchurch Test may merely have sealed his place – especially with Anderson continuing to struggle with a back injury. De Grandhomme’s only ODI for New Zealand came in March 2012 against South Africa.Astle, meanwhile, had had a muted Christchurch Test on a seam-friendly pitch, but had built up some domestic first-class form with hauls of 5 for 36 and 3 for 20 in his two previous matches. Sodhi has also had a good start to his domestic season, but had effectively bowled himself out of the ODI team in India, where he had been expensive. Astle is uncapped in ODIs having played two Tests and two T20Is so far.”Todd offers us good all-round balance – with the runs he can score lower down the order – but he’s primarily been picked as a legspinner,” Larsen said. “It’s important to add that Ish has been a little a little inconsistent, and he’s returning to Northern Districts and is working very hard on his game. Ish does remain very clearly in our plans for the future.”Ronchi’s three single-figure scores in India had also seen him exit the squad, though his output has been modest for much longer. In 25 ODI innings since the start of last year’s World Cup, Ronchi has hit 254 runs at an average of 11.04.”Luke remains on our radar, but we felt we wanted to give BJ Watling further ODI experience – Luke knows he was a bit shy of runs across the last year or so,” Larsen said. “BJ is a little more classical in his batsmanship. There are a lot of explosive players in the team. If you think about Henry Nicholls and the way that he plays – we think those two complement the overall batting of the team.”The Chappell-Hadlee series begins on December 4 in Sydney, before the action moves to Canberra, then Melbourne.

Crystal Palace Could Replace Guehi With £29k-p/w ‘Mountain’

In the past two seasons, Crystal Palace have built a solid foundation largely based upon the ever-present and reliable central defensive partnership of Joachim Anderson and Marc Guehi.

The Eagles kept nine clean sheets last year, as their solidity has been one of the principal reasons for the consolidation of their mid-table Premier League status.

However, the latter could be set for a departure after impressing since his £18m move to Selhurst Park, with Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Liverpool all circling around the Englishman.

The 22-year-old has built a formidable reputation as one of the league's most consistent assets, who since playing for Palace, has also made his England debut.

Guehi’s possible exit would open the door for a defender in South London and Perr Schurrs has been tipped to be his replacement.

What’s the latest on Perr Schurrs to Crystal Palace?

According to the Daily Mail, the Eagles have stepped up their interest in the Torino centre-back, who is also being keenly tracked by Napoli and Newcastle United.

Even if Guehi chooses to stay, Schuurs may still move to the Premier League to reinforce the club's backline.

Can Perr Schurrs replace Marc Guehi at Crystal Palace?

Across 30 Serie A outings this term, the Dutchman has been a commanding pillar of reliability and has averaged 3.2 clearances, 1.7 tackles and was only dribbled past 0.4 times per game, without committing any errors leading to shots or goals.

The former Ajax man has, therefore, performed tremendously within his club, managing the most tackles and clearances within the Torino squad, as per WhoScored.

Described as a “mountain” by journalist Josh Bunting, the titan possesses all the attributes to replace Guehi, should he leave in the summer.

When comparing these two mercurial talents, the £29k-per-week titan has averaged more tackles per 90 (1.97 vs 1.41), clearances per 90 (3.95 vs 3.62) and aerials won per 90 (2.32 vs 1.46), to show that he has the physicality to fill Guehi’s shoes.

Marc Guehi

As well as this tenacity, Schuurs is also confident with the ball at his feet, ranking in the top 22% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for pass completion, whilst Guehi only ranks in the highest 53%.

It is difficult to find a weakness in his game, and he looks perfectly suited to English football.

Having played in 73 of the Eagles’ 76 Premier League games since he arrived, the Cobham graduate would undeniably be a monumental loss for the club, but Schuurs’ profile, attributes and relatively spritely age means he is more than capable of filling his void should Steve Parish make a move.
