India’s spinners have taken 13 wickets in two matches. The alarm bells are ringing, but South Africa’s newly appointed stand-in captain is not ready to accept that in public yet
Sidharth Monga in Centurion04-Feb-20181:02
‘Kuldeep and I always look to bowl slow’ – Chahal
Aiden Markram knew what he was walking into when he accepted the captaincy of a depleted South Africa side in an ODI series against arguably the best team in the world. He is the second-youngest South Africa captain, his captaincy debut came in only his third ODI, and half way into the day he was sitting in a press conference trying to make sense of South Africa’s lowest score at home. Next to him sat the South Africa batting coach, Dale Benkenstein, as if to protect – where you can – the boy otherwise thrown to the wolves already.”Obviously, the guys are very upset and disappointed,” Markram said. “But the beauty of it is that everyone’s disappointed in themselves, and not in others in the team. That’s where the culture stands out, it stands strong. Each player will look to get better now going forward. It is a quick turnaround but it might fire the guys up going into the remaining four matches, which I think is a great thing for us.”India’s spinners have taken 13 South Africa wickets in two matches, with two of the remaining experienced batsmen in their middle order not looking good against spin. The alarm bells are ringing, but Markram is not ready to accept that in a press conference at least. Before the ODI, he said he saw no problem against spin, and after his side was bowled out for 118 he doesn’t call it a “danger”.”Look, obviously they are two quality bowlers in their own right,” Markram said of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, who bagged a five-for and a three-wicket haul respectively. “I don’t think we played them particularly well, and that’s where our downfall was today. Having said that, you are never going to come across a bad attack in international cricket, and you’re never going to come across a bad batting line-up in international cricket either. It’s just one of those things. I don’t think we played spin incredibly well, it’s obviously something we need to work on, but it’s not a massive danger for us, I don’t think.”In an ideal world, Markram would have played out most of the spin without taking too many risks. He would have liked to have taken the innings deep but he pulled a short ball straight to deep midwicket, one ball after Quinton de Kock had done that.”My general game plan is to try and take it quite deep, bat through the innings and let our attacking batsmen sort of play around me,” Markram said. “I obviously didn’t do that today, that’s what happens in cricket. I try to keep it as low-risk as possible, and then as soon as we get partnerships building, we’ll chat between players and identify which bowler we’d like to put some pressure on and which guy we think we should just going low-risk. It all depends on the day as well.”Aiden Markram looks to play a shot•Getty Images
It could be argued some of the batsmen that followed him didn’t really have much of a game plan. Markram was asked if the problem was not in the execution, but, in fact, in the absence of plans. “Look, I don’t think there’s too much of a lack of a game plan,” Markram said. “If you speak to each individual in our top six, top seven, each person has got a clear plan. So it obviously comes down to execution on the day. Like I said, they are two quality wristspinners and we give them credit. But I still think we can execute better, and that’s the nice thing. It’s not that something that’s drastic that has to change. The plans are in place, now we’ve just got to keep working hard to execute, that’s all.”Benkenstein was happy with the team’s intent – “230-240 wouldn’t have been a winning total anyway” – but he was more realistic about the challenge of facing these spinners. South Africa don’t come across such wicket-taking spinners every day, and it is not going to be easy to formulate plans with only two days between all ODIs.”It’s very difficult,” Benkenstein admitted. “Unless we can call them [Kuldeep and Chahal] into our nets for the practice. That’s the beauty of international cricket, you know. You’ve got to come up with a plan obviously. I guess everybody’s got the ability to do it. We’ve had two games and there are no excuses. We’ve got a few net bowlers who are a little bit slow. We saw Justin Ontong come and bowl those offspinners off his knee [to replicate Kedar Jadhav]. So, as management, we try and do everything possible, obviously.”But at the end of the day, the batters have got to work it out. They’ve got to execute their own game plan and obviously got to do their job out in the middle. So there isn’t much more that you can do in the nets. You’re not going to get them to come and bowl at you. That’s the tough thing about international cricket.”Benkenstein didn’t want his batsmen to give up attacking the spinners. “I’d much rather them playing that way than being too scared to hit the ball,” he said. “We can learn a lot a from the way Indian batters play spin. Any loose ball that our spinners bowl, they are looking to hit it for four or six. There is a bit of learning to be done there. The other tough thing is you are playing against two wristspinners, that a not a lot of players have played against. It does take time to get used to their change-ups, their variations.”
Tottenham Hotspur team news has come to light as Ange Postecoglou's Spurs side prepare take on Sheffield United in the Premier League this weekend.
Tottenham vs Sheffield United
The north Londoners kick off their return from internationals with a home clash against Paul Heckingbottom's newly-promoted Blades at 15:00 on Saturday.
Spurs are absolutely flying at the moment under Postecoglou; having tasted victory in each of their last three top flight encounters with wins over Man United, Bournemouth and Burnley in that order.
In that time, they've scored nine goals whilst showcasing Postecoglou's electric, entertaining brand of football at it's devastating best.
Meanwhile, Sheffield United's fortunes are at the opposite end of the spectrum, as Heckingbottom's men are yet to record their first league win of the 023/2024 campaign.
They were arguably unlucky with 2-1 defeats against Man City and Nottingham Forest while their lack of bite going forward also meant they couldn't get past Crystal Palace – who beat them 1-0 on the opening day.
The Bramall Lane side did manage to get their first point in the bag a fortnight ago against Everton with a 2-2 draw, but all the signs suggest this could be a routine win for Tottenham.
What's the latest Spurs team news?
Ahead of their clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a few days time, some team news has come to light on who will and will not be available to feature for Postecoglou.
There were reports that defender Cristian Romero picked up a knock on international duty with Argentina against Ecuador, but those fears were later quashed when he started their subsequent 3-0 win over Bolivia.
Meanwhile, fellow Argentine Giovani Lo Celso is a doubt for Sheffield United after missing their round of internationals through injury, though he could be back on September 30.
Ryan Sessegnon, Alfie Whiteman and Rodrigo Bentancur are all longer term absentees after undergoing surgeries on their various problems, with an update now coming to light on Bryan Gil.
The Spaniard, who has been tipped to slot nicely into Postecoglou's fluid Spurs system, could be out till "late October or early November" after his own groin issue.
That's according to The Evening Standard, with Gil requiring surgery for the problem and isn't likely to feature again for Tottenham till late next month at the earliest.
The 22-year-old, who has been called a "magician" going forward, found game time very difficult to come by under Antonio Conte but did manage to impress in small flashes.
Gil has also been likened to Man City legend Bernardo Silva for his playing style, and even though Conte used him sparingly, the ex-Spurs boss did have some kind words to say about him earlier this year.
“It was really important, you know about Bryan Gil we are talking about a player who was born to play football," said Conte in January.
"He understands football quickly. He’s so clever, so intelligent to understand the situation. Then you know this league is difficult, because you have to be good in quality and be fast and to have good endurance and he has this type of quality.
“But at the same time you have to be strong physically. I think compared to last season Gil is improving a lot also under this aspect. He has to become stronger physically. I compared him to Bernardo Silva, at Manchester City, because in my opinion they are really, really similar."

O time se comportou bem defensivamente hoje – finalizou.
The second-wicket pair added 161 to propel Scotland to 322 for 6, their fourth-highest ODI total, which ended up proving well beyond UAE’s reach
The Report by Liam Brickhill in Bulawayo15-Mar-2018Getty Images
Scotland continued their unbeaten run in the World Cup qualifiers with a 75-run win over UAE in their Super Six match at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. Opting to bat first, Scotland racked up an imposing 322 for 6, their fourth-highest total in ODIs, with Matthew Cross contributing a career-best 114. Cross’ effort was backed up by 78 from Calum MacLeod, with whom he shared a 161-run stand for the second wicket. Scotland then bowled UAE out for 249 in the 48th over, with seamer Chris Sole taking 4 for 68.It was Cross’ opening partner, Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer, who led the early charge for Scotland, as he has done more often than not in this competition. He took 16 runs off medium-pacer Zahoor Khan’s second over, and he had raced into the 40s at better than a run a ball when he chipped a simple return catch to Imran Haider in the legspinner’s first over. That wicket snapped the opening stand at 68, but there was no relief for UAE as it only brought Cross and MacLeod together. Initially, the pair focussed on risk-free batting and subsisted almost entirely on singles pushed in the ‘V’ down the ground. UAE captain Rohan Mustafa cycled through four spinners as he spread the field, and although that allowed UAE some measure of containment, it also meant that a single to turn the strike over was never far away.No boundaries were hit between the 11th and the 29th over, but the quick start and the availability of singles meant Scotland were still able to tick along at four an over. After Cross reached an 89-ball fifty, MacLeod broke free of the spin stranglehold with three fours in an over from Haider.Taking his cue, Cross also began to accelerate. Shaiman Anwar’s part-time legspin was dispatched over wide long-on, and Cross added a second six off Zahoor, slugging the bowler straight back over his head. Cross’s third six came from a slog sweep, the ball landing in the trees beyond midwicket, while MacLeod too passed fifty, the pair taking 19 runs from Haider’s last over to ruin his figures.UAE finally had some relief when MacLeod, looking to scoop the ball up and over fine leg, moved too far across and had his stumps rearranged by Zahoor. But the respite was not to last long. Cross reached a 125-ball hundred in the 42nd over – his second in ODIs, and his second against UAE after his maiden ODI ton against them in January. After he was gone, just failing to get his bat down on time as Mustafa fired in a quick arm-ball, George Munsey cracked four fours and one towering six over square leg in a 14-ball 30. Richie Berrington, who became the most capped player in Scottish cricket history, contributed a quickfire unbeaten 37 that included a six that landed on the roof of the stands beyond midwicket to boost the score beyond 300.UAE’s record chase in ODIs is 300, scored against Scotland in January, and their openers set about the chase as if they were determined to set a new landmark. Mustafa and Ashfaq Ahmed were particularly severe on anything short. Ashfaq rushed into the 20s with a pull for six that went in front of square, while Mustafa took 16 runs from Chris Sole’s first over, including a remarkable swipe at a short ball that flew high and straight back over the bowler’s head for six.But Sole, playing his first match of the tournament after missing the group stage with a hamstring injury, soon had his revenge as Mustafa picked out Michael Leask at long-off with one big shot too many. For UAE, 62 for 0 quickly became 64 for 3, and where the short ball had brought runs, it now brought wickets. Ashfaq pulled Sole tamely to Craig Wallace at square leg while Chirag Suri, rushed for pace, gloved a short one to be caught behind for a duck. Before their chase had reached the 20-over mark, six of UAE’s batsmen had been dismissed, and the match seemed a foregone conclusion.Mohammad Usman and Ahmed Raza at least ensured that they went down fighting, with Usman particularly confident on the attack. Both players reached career-best scores, Usman registering his second ODI fifty and moving on to 80 before he toe-ended an attempted paddle scoop off Sole to give him his fourth wicket. Raza then reached a maiden ODI fifty of his own, but was trapped lbw by Brad Wheal immediately afterwards, and UAE quickly folded.”Very pleased for the guys, and very pleased for everyone back home who has contributed to get us to where we are at the moment,” said Scotland captain Coetzer. “We’ve enjoyed this performance, as we have every one thus far.”Still not quite that full performance we’re looking for, but we’re getting there. The batting was hugely exciting today.”The win means Scotland now top the Super Six tables with five points. Their next match is against Ireland on Sunday at Harare Sports Club.

It is fair to say that it has proven a tricky return to the Premier League as far as Burnley are concerned, with one particular worry having been the shortage of goals for Vincent Kompany's side, after scoring just four times in four league games thus far.
Oh, how the Clarets wish they had a prolific presence to lead the line this season, with summer signing Zeki Amdouni – who arrived from Swiss side Basel – representing something of a gamble due to his lack of prior experience in English football.
In another world, the Turf Moor outfit may have been lining up with an almost guaranteed supply of goals through the middle, however, with the club having agonisingly missed out on the chance to sign England skipper, Harry Kane in the not-too-distant past…
Why didn't Burnley sign Harry Kane?
While it may appear fanciful to imagine, there was a time in which the former Tottenham Hotspur man could have ended up in Lancashire, having struggled to force his way into the first-team reckoning in north London.
Following a string of mixed loan spells in the lower leagues – notably scoring just twice in 15 games for Leicester City in 2013 – there were likely to have been doubts over Kane's suitability to life at the elite level, with then-boss Tim Sherwood even suggesting that chairman Daniel Levy was willing to sanction the sale of the academy graduate to the Foxes for just £600k.
It was then a year later that the Turf Moor hierarchy were also believed to be sniffing around for the promising striker, with Sean Dyche – who was in the dugout at the time – revealing that he had enquired about signing the youngster in 2014.
Everton manager Sean Dyche.
Despite that interest from the current Everton boss, the Clarets were said to have been quoted a figure of around £7m to be able to prise the Walthamstow native from N17, with that a rather hefty asking price for a player that was relatively "unproven" – in the words of Dyche.
With Burnley looking to splash out closer to just £3m – the fee that was subsequently spent on George Boyd – the deal ultimately never came to fruition, leaving the Lancashire side to ponder what might have been had the 6 foot 2 sensation ended up on their books.
How much is Kane worth now?
That failure to sign the emerging goal machine immediately stung as Dyche's side were relegated from the top flight at the end of the 2014/15 campaign, the same season in which Kane truly announced himself to the wider world with a stellar haul of 21 league goals for Spurs.
Despite a belief at the time from some that he would simply be a 'one-season wonder', the ruthless marksman has made those doubters look rather silly such has been his success since then, as he is now the leading scorer for both his country and for Spurs as a marker of his individual brilliance.
Harry Kane plays for England in World Cup 2022.
While also now just 47 goals behind Alan Shearer's Premier League record tally, the 30-year-old opted to depart England in order to join Bayern Munich this summer, with the £412k-per-week gem still seeking a first piece of major silverware to add to his numerous individual honours.
As an indication of just how far he has come since those links to the Clarets almost a decade ago, Kane was snapped up by the Bundesliga giants for a reported fee of around £100m, with that figure likely to have been higher had the forward's contract not been nearing its expiry at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
With five goals in just six games already under his belt in Germany, the 86-cap international is already making an immediate impact in his new surroundings as further proof of just what a "world-class" talent he is – as per pundit Graeme Souness.
In truth, that transfer failure represents a painful case of 'one that got away' for the Clarets…

No sooner had Todd Astle been grasping a rare opportunity in Test cricket than he has been hit by injury

No sooner had Todd Astle been grasping a rare opportunity in Test cricket than he has been hit by injury, a side strain ruling him out of his hometown match in Christchurch as New Zealand target just a fourth series win over England.Astle took 3 for 39 in the second innings at Eden Park, but scans the following day showed he had picked up the injury. He had a previous side strain earlier in the season and this one means he still has yet to play consecutive Tests after single outings in 2012 and 2016.”Through some incredibly hard work, Todd’s already overcome some injuries this summer, so for this to happen now is a cruel blow,” coach Mike Hesson said. “Todd played a major role in helping us win the game at Eden Park, so it’s disappointing for Todd and the team that he’s forced to the sideline ahead of Friday.”With Mitchell Santner sidelined by a long-term knee injury, it has opened up the chance for fellow legspinner Ish Sodhi to resume his Test career having not played the format since September 2016 against India in Kanpur. If New Zealand maintain the same balance of attack, rather than going all-seam with Matt Henry, Sodhi will come into the match and high on confidence at that. He took career-best match figures of 12 for 62 against Wellington in the Plunket Shield last week, which included a 7 for 30 in the first innings, and 7 for 98 against Otago in the outing before that.”It was good to get the chance to bowl some overs in the middle so you go into the Test, if I play, with a bit of momentum. It was the ideal scenario,” Sodhi said. “As a young spinner learning your art, the best way to do it is to bowl as much as you can and bowling in the nets is so different to bowling in the middle in games. You have to take the chance with both hands.”It’s awesome to get the opportunity to be part of a winning team. The last game was fantastic and boys got up a great spectacle with the pink-ball Test so to be part of it is fantastic but I feel sorry for Toddy. He’s work very hard in the last game, performed well so it’s heartbreaking.”Astle’s absence will lengthen New Zealand’s tail unless they take a cautious approach and opt to play an extra batsman. Martin Guptill is in the squad but, on Tuesday, Hesson said the team would not go into the match looking for a draw despite the carrot of the series win.On the other hand, spin has only taken 14 wickets in four Tests at Hagley Oval. New Zealand didn’t play a spinner against Australia in 2016, and in Tests against Pakistan and Bangladesh, they used a grand total of four overs with Santner not bowling a ball in the Bangladesh contest.Sodhi hasn’t played a first-class match at the ground since 2015 – and in three matches has a return of 3 for 256 – but believes the surface could offer him something. “It’s normally hard and bouncy and if you gave me the option, and the turn was slow, I’d rather have the bounce so hopefully can extract something out the wicket.”The prize for a win or drawn Test is significant for New Zealand: to join the team of 1983-84 as the only series winners against England on home soil, and the 1986 and 1999 sides who achieved the feat in England. They will be favourites going into the match after dismantling England for 58 in Auckland and overcoming the rain to win in effectively little more than three days, but getting carried away is not the New Zealand style.”I think we saw in the second innings what they are capable of and we expect them to be a lot tougher in this match,” BJ Watling said. “They are a quality outfit and we’ll have to on our game.”
