New Zealand reach tri-series final as Bates, Devine make light work of South Africa

New Zealand booked their place in Sunday’s tri-series final, and brought England along with them in the process

I’m just trying to keep up with Suzie Bates – Devine

New Zealand 151 for 2 (Devine 68*, Bates 62) beat South Africa 148 for 6 (Tryon 35) by eight wickets
ScorecardNew Zealand booked their place in Sunday’s tri-series final, and brought England along with them in the process, as they eased to an eight-wicket victory over a lacklustre South Africa in the first of their T20 double-headers at Bristol. It was a must-win encounter for South Africa, who had always been up against it after a pair of record-breaking beatings in the opening round of tri-series fixtures in Taunton. And despite winning the toss and batting first, they struggled to make headway in a stodgy innings of 148 for 6, enlivened only in the latter stages by a breezy 15-ball 35 from Chloe Tryon. It was no sort of score to challenge New Zealand’s hard-hitting top-order, and Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine make sure there would be no recourse in an opening stand of 130 in 13.2 overs.Bates brought up her fifty from 39 balls and Devine from 31, and neither really needed to extend themselves in the process. There were a pair of late consolation wickets as Bates snicked a drive through to Lizelle Lee behind the stumps for 62 before Katey Martin was bowled by Zintle Mali for 10. But two more fours in as many balls from Devine, including a lofted flog over the covers, sealed the contest with 4.4 overs to spare. In the absence of Shabnim Ismail, who withdrew with injury before the toss, South Africa’s bowlers were lacking in its usual depth. With the bat, they had started with cautious intent, adding 40 for the first wicket before Lizelle Lee fell on the pull to square leg, whereupon Sune Luus was run out at the non-striker’s end without addition.Amelia Kerr, the talk of the women’s game after her record-smashing exploits in Ireland, added two wickets in two overs to account for South Africa’s middle order. And though Tryon tried her best, the result was hardly in doubt.

Everton should have hired Benitez successor with 85% win rate v Dyche

Departing Everton with nine losses from his last 13 matches in charge, Rafa Benitez proved to be an unpopular figure as Toffees manager.

It felt like it wouldn't really work from the get-go, the Spaniard synonymous with Liverpool as manager before switching allegiances to Goodison Park – Benitez lifting the Champions League, the FA Cup and various other trophies in a celebrated spell at the Reds.

It was a doomed appointment, something that the former Everton boss has spoken on since departing the Toffees last year.

Everton's former manager Rafael Benitez.

Speaking in an exclusive Sky Sports interview about his troubled time at the Toffees, Benitez admitted that his prior connections to Liverpool made the job a difficult one.

He said: "So I realised we had to change things inside, but I couldn't do it straight away because I was a former Red and it could be seen as 'oh, he's come in to change our club'."

It was no surprise, therefore, when the manager was given the boot from the club in January last year.

The Toffees would go on a torrid run under the reign of the Spanish head coach, only winning one match between matchday seven and matchday twenty-two of the Premier League season.

Shortlisted names to take over from the unpopular figure were former Toffees players Wayne Rooney and Duncan Ferguson who was already with Everton, whilst rumours surrounding Frank Lampard would come true with the ex-Chelsea man appointed.

Yet, another fancied name on the shortlist could well have been the uplifting appointment Everton needed at the time; Graham Potter.

Did Everton almost appoint Graham Potter?

According to The Argus, Potter's name appeared on the Toffees shortlist for a new manager after Benitez's exit.

Everton would have hoped to tempt Potter away from Brighton to join Everton at the time, Brighton and Hove Albion absolutely flying when the rumours began to surface.

graham-potter-championship-leeds-manager-news

It wasn't to materialise however, a story of what could have been for the Merseyside club who continued to struggle under the short-term tenure of caretaker manager Ferguson and then Lampard after him.

How good was Potter at Brighton?

Potter would stay with the Seagulls and achieve unprecedented success for the club, finishing ninth in the Premier League during the 2021/22 season – shrugging off any outside noise linking him with a move away to clinch Brighton's best-ever top-flight finish at the time.

Graham-Potter

The 48-year-old would win plaudits for the attractive football he made his Brighton sides play, getting the best out of his talents which included Alexis Mac Allister, Neal Maupay and Leandro Trossard.

It would lead to Potter joining Chelsea at the start of the 2022/23 season, the Blues poaching the ex-Swansea City boss from the Seagulls having been labelled a "genius" for his exploits on the south coast.

Whilst Brighton have gone on leaps and bounds with their next manager in Roberto De Zerbi – European football now being played with Ansu Fati even playing for the Seagulls now – Potter's reputation took a battering as Chelsea manager.

He would leave Stamford Bridge with a mere 12 wins from 31 games played, a bruising experience for the man who enjoyed so much success with Brighton before leaving for London.

Could his career have turned out differently if he opted to join Everton? Could he have been the heroic manager Everton needed in their time of crisis after Benitez's exit from the club?

All those questions are up in the air, but Everton fans certainly wouldn't have minded Potter joining the club at the time. If his record against Dyche speaks for anything, he's certainly better tactically, boasting an 85% win record from seven matches.

Move over Veliz: Spurs could save millions on "phenomenal" Kane heir

Tottenham Hotspur have excited both neutrals this season and supporters alike with their new brand of football under likeable Austrailan head coach Ange Postecoglou, sitting top of the tree in the Premier League after a Monday night 2-0 victory over London rivals, Fulham.

This has all been achieved despite the backdrop of Harry Kane leaving N17 behind for Bavaria, Tottenham's all-time top scorer with 278 strikes and main talisman joining Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich for £86.4m to break the hearts of Spurs fans everywhere.

harry-kane-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-academy-n17-jamie-donley-brennan-johnson-postecoglou

Tottenham have recuperated the funds that they got for their departing superstar into significantly improving their squad to the standards they're currently operating at, buying the likes of James Maddison, Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven who have all slotted into the first team effortlessly.

The Lilywhites have also bought a number of promising talents with an eye on the future, 20-year-old Alejio Veliz purchased from his native Argentina after netting 19 goals in 63 starts for former club CA Rosario Central.

How is Alejo Veliz performing this season?

Nowhere near the standard to replace the out-going Kane just yet, Veliz is certainly a prospect to watch out for under the guidance of Postecoglou who has gifted his new Argentine striker fleeting opportunities to impress so far this season.

Alejo Veliz

He has featured in only ten minutes of football for Spurs so far in the Premier League, substituted on at the death in wins versus Liverpool and Luton Town.

The young attacker was allowed to get more minutes under his belt in Tottenham's EFL Trophy tie away at Colchester United, playing for 28 minutes in Essex in a side more focused on youth.

Veliz's time will come to become a permanent fixture in the Spurs starting line-up with the attacker still but Tottenham could have a natural heir to Kane away from new additions in the form of young Irish prodigy Troy Parrott, who has been with Spurs since 2017.

Who is Troy Parrott?

Parrott has been in and around the Tottenham youth ranks ever since departing Belvedere FC in his birthplace of Dublin, impressing numerous times away from Spurs out on loan.

Labelled as "phenomenal" in terms of his work rate by ex manager Ryan Lowe amid his stint at Preston North End, Spurs have a real talent on their hands if he is nurtured correctly.

He's in fantastic form for his current loan club Excelsior Rotterdam out in the Netherlands, scoring three goals from six contests even without starting a game yet for the Eredivisie outfit.

He could go close to eclipsing his best loan goal total if he continues this blistering start, scoring ten times from 47 appearances when he was on loan at Milton Keynes Dons during the 2021-22 season.

Parrott has been the definition of clinical ever since embarking on his latest loan adventure, needing only one shot in his side's last contest versus PEC Zwolle, as per Sofascore, to impose himself into the contest – scoring a matter of moments after being introduced, shades of Kane's deadliness in-front of goal arguably present.

After this loan spell in the Dutch first division, Tottenham will no doubt have a look at the 6 foot 1 attacker and Postecoglou could well believe he's ready for a first team berth at Spurs after maturing and refining his game away from the club.

The aforementioned Veliz may be the name on everyone's lips at present, yet Parrott could well be want to watch this season and beyond.

Sri Lanka coach Hathurusingha open to returns of Gunathilaka, Vandersay and Malinga

Sri Lanka’s coach also held the selection door open for Lasith Malinga, provided he plays domestic cricket and proves he can still bowl and field at the top level

Danushka Gunathilaka, Jeffrey Vandersay and Lasith Malinga – three players currently out of favour with the cricket establishment – could all find their way back into the Sri Lanka team. So says coach Chandika Hathurusingha who, albeit not a selector, exerts substantial influence in selection decisions. Like captain Angelo Mathews and batting coach Thilan Samaraweera, Hathurusingha believes Sri Lanka are yet to identify the “combination” of players that will take them into the World Cup in 2019, and the World T20 the following year, and has said spots remain open for these three, so long as they sharpen up.Gunathilaka, of course, has committed the most serious offence, breaking curfew on a Test-match night last month, and as a result was suspended for the entire limited-overs leg of the South Africa series. Vandersay briefly went missing after a night out in St Lucia in June (though at least in his case, he was allowed to be out that night), and received a hefty fine and was put on probation as a consequence. The official team stance on such conduct is that it is not tolerated, with Mathews delivering an especially stern public rebuke to Gunathilaka. But that does not mean these two players are out forever, Hathurusingha said.”I am very disappointed that these kinds of things happened,” Hathurusingha said of Gunathilaka and Vandersay’s indiscipline. “But at the same time this has been something that has been happening in the past. Our culture is so different. We don’t tolerate this. It is not that he is letting down one person or two persons; he is letting down the whole team and his family. At the same time, people do mistakes. We need to give them second chance. They have not done a crime. It is just the team rules that they have broken. They will be back.”Malinga, meanwhile, was not considered for ODI selection because he did not play in the provincial one-day tournament earlier this year; he spent that time working as a bowling consultant in the IPL instead. Though he played in one domestic T20 tournament earlier this year, and finished as joint-top wicket-taker, he was overlooked for selection for the forthcoming one-off T20 against South Africa on Tuesday. But with another, more competive domestic T20 tournament set to begin in August, Malinga has another chance to prove himself.”As long as what the selectors want is fulfilled, Malinga is in our plans,” Hathurusingha said. “He needs to come and play domestic cricket and we are not going to make exceptions for anybody. The team is number one. The team culture has to be protected. We are not treating him differently. He is a quality player. He needs to show that he is capable of delivering what he has done in the past. Not only with bowling, but fielding as well. There’s a good opportunity for him to come and play the domestic T20 tournament if he is willing to play. If he is performing he is in our plans.”Malinga had been substantially below his best when he last played international cricket, but the absence of a good death bowler has been felt by the team, who have lost over 70 per cent of the limited-overs matches they have played since the start of 2017. That awful record has prompted a change in strategy, whereby Sri Lanka have decided to prepare batting-friendly pitches at home in order to prime themselves for the kinds of tracks they will encounter elsewhere in the world. Ahead of the final ODI against South Africa, Hathurusingha described this change of tack as a no-brainer.”When you play 36 matches and win only nine, it is not a tough call at all to change strategy,” he said. “It is common sense. It is looking at what we have been doing and seeing it’s not working. We have scored more than 300 only a handful of times if my memory serves right. We realized what we need to do. It is not only about the World Cup, it is about whatever we have been doing is not working.”

The Sri Lanka women’s team is set to host India for three ODIs and five T20Is in September. The Indian team are expected to arrive in Sri Lanka on September 7, with the first two ODIs set to take place in Galle on the September 11 and 13. The teams will then travel to Katunayake for the final ODI and the first T20I, on September 16 and 19 respectively. The next three T20Is will be played in Colombo at the Colts Cricket Club grounds, before the action returns to Katunayake for the final match on September 25.The ODI leg of the tour will count towards the Women’s Championship, which will determine the three automatic qualifiers – apart from the hosts New Zealand – for the Women’s World Cup 2021.India, who are currently two places above eighth-placed Sri Lanka on the Women’s Championship points table, come into the tour on the back of a 2-1 win against England in the ODIs at home, while Sri Lanka have lost their last two 50-over series 3-0 – away to West Indies and at home to Pakistan. There is no question that India begin as favourites, having lost just one of 26 ODIs against Sri Lanka. The home side fair only marginally better in the shortest format against this opposition, with three wins in 12 T20Is. Last time the two sides met in a bilateral series was in 2016 in India, when Sri Lanka were whitewashed 3-0 in both the ODI as well as T20I series.

Qualquer outro empate serve ao time argentino.
