Liverpool make approach to sign exciting £26m Nunez partner

Liverpool will inevitably target new additions in 2024, having impressed thus far during the 2023/24 season after an industrial midfield rebuild in the summer, though still not quite at full throttle.

Jurgen Klopp's side's midfield issues were exposed against Luton Town last weekend, with a lack of specialist defensive options inhibiting a possible title charge, while Andy Robertson's injury several weeks ago has underscored the need for left-sided reinforcements on the backline.

The frontline is in better shape, but could still welcome some exciting young talent to enrich the ranks and maintain Liverpool's attacking fluency across multiple fronts, and a rising star appears to have been earmarked.

Liverpool transfer news – Assane Diao

According to reports in Spain, via Sport Witness, Real Betis winger Assane Diao is on Liverpool's radar after an impressive start to the season in LaLiga, though the Reds will face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea and Newcastle United.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

The report mentions that the listed suitors have all made separate approaches over the past weeks, with Diao having 'dazzled' the Betis supporters with his electric displays.

Aged just 18, the Spain U21 international is reported to have a €30m (£26m) release clause embedded into his contract, with manager Manuel Pellegrini actively seeking to tie up fresh terms that will elevate that amount to €40m (£35m).

Assane Diao's style of play

Joining the Real Betis academy from Cadiz in 2021, Diao was originally slated for a central midfield role but maintained a level of attacking prowess that simply couldn't go unnoticed, prompting a move toward the left channel.

Having now scored four goals across his first ten professional appearances with his Spanish side, Diao is proving that decision right, possessing a natural eye for goal that has alerted the prestigious English clubs. Indeed, in total this term he has already found the net six times.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 23% for successful take-ons, the top 18% for tackles, the top 11% for interceptions, the top 1% for blocks and the top 6% for aerial wins per 90.

So what does this mean? Diao's natural predatory instinct is highlighted, striking at an age-belying rate so far, and while his goalscoring steals the headlines, he is progressive and tenacious in his application across the park.

Such skills could be a welcome addition to Liverpool's attacking options, with Luis Diaz certainly of a similar mould in his barrelling, breakneck motions toward the byline, having scored four goals from nine starts this term to emphasise his effectiveness.

With his shooting skills, Diao could benefit immensely from a dynamic centre-forward such as Darwin Nunez beside him in the frontline, with the Uruguayan striker hailed as an “agent of chaos” by journalist Theo Squires for the kaleidoscope of offensive tools he brings to the table.

Having posted seven goals and four assists already this season, Nunez ranks among the top 11% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 18% for shot-creating actions and the top 6% for progressive carries per 90, emphasising his surging skills.

The £140k-per-week star is a dream for a rising talent of Diao's ilk to play alongside, and would only serve to enhance his skills on Merseyside.

Diao has been described as "sharp" and "intelligent" by journalist Josh Bunting and certainly looks to be a prospect worth investing in; given the riches Klopp possesses in an attacking regard already, he would find the perfect platform to continue his development at Anfield.

Arteta could boldly drop Nketiah by unleashing "clinical" Arsenal star

Arsenal are back in action this evening in the Champions League, as Mikel Arteta’s side look to go within touching distance of the last 16, with Sevilla welcomed to the Emirates.

It’s the fourth fixture of Group B, and with the Gunners sat at the top of the table, a win against Diego Alonso’s side would all but seal the Premier League outfit’s progression into the next round.

Victory will be far from easy, as Arteta will be aware of from their last test in Seville in the match that ended 2-1 to Arsenal, and with key players missing, the Spaniard could be set to shuffle his side once more in the bid to collect three points.

Arsenal team news vs Sevilla

After a disastrous week, the north Londoners will be eager to get back to winning ways, following defeats against West Ham United and Newcastle United in the previous two outings.

Arteta has a host of squad problems to solve ahead of tonight’s showdown at the Emirates, with injuries to key members of the XI hitting hard during the bustling schedule.

In terms of absentees, Emile Smith-Rowe, Thomas Partey, Gabriel Jesus and Jurrien Timber will certainly be out of contention for this evening’s fixture, leaving options in the midfield alarmingly thin as the games pile up.

To add to the strain in the middle of the park, the manager confirmed in his pre-match press conference that captain, Martin Odegaard, is a doubt as he continues to recover from an underlying hip problem.

Journalist Mark Mann-Bryans noted that Eddie Nketiah was not present in Tuesday’s training session, claiming that the Englishman will undergo a late fitness test to determine his stance ahead of the Champions League challenge.

Luckily for Arteta, the front line is where he has several options to rotate, with one name the ideal replacement for Nketiah, whether he is deemed fit or not.

The stats that show Leandro Trossard must start against Sevilla

Prior to his hat trick against Sheffield United, many were concerned about the 24-year-old’s lack of conviction in the final third, which was noise he silenced with a heroic three-goal display in the Premier League.

Since then, it seems Nketiah has gone back to his usual ways, as highlighted in the table above that displays his form over the two games since Arsenal’s 5-0 dismantling of the Blades.

By dropping the Englishman, or losing him to injury, Arteta could use the opportunity to unleash Leandro Trossard, who has proved a point when in action in the Champions League already this term.

Lauded as “absolutely clinical” by journalist Phil Costa during the Gunners’ opening fixture in the competition, the Belgian needs little opportunity to score, as highlighted by his stellar 50% conversion rate in the Premier League this term.

In Trossard, the manager has an established goal scorer, with a prolific nature when creeping into the box, making him almost impossible to defend against if he is able to get his shot away, while the former Brighton and Hove Albion man can also chip in creatively, having registered ten assists in just 22 games for the Gunners last term – more than Nketiah has achieved in his entire Arsenal career (6).

Regardless of the latter man's fitness status, Arteta must drop the 24-year-old in favour of the £90k-per-week star to promote healthy competition and give the Belgium international the chance to shine once more on the biggest stage.

Cook's dream still alive as England lead swells

Playing his final innings in Test cricket, the England opener is 46 not out, with all of England waiting with bated breath for century No. 33

The Report by Alagappan Muthu09-Sep-2018Alastair Cook has a lovely smile. There’s a kind of mischief to it, as if he knows something you don’t and he’s utterly pleased with himself for it. He flashed one after absolutely middling the final ball before tea at The Oval and walked off. England finished the day 154 runs ahead. More importantly, if only for this Test, he was 46 not out.Playing his 291st and final innings, he’d got off the mark with a trademark flick off the pads and the crowd came to its feet once again. A good portion of them had been hanging out by the stairs leading up to the England dressing room after India had been bowled out for 292 in their first innings, thanks to Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 86.Cameras were out. Goosebumps were visible. And applause rang out. A wave of it, rising ever higher and bathing the former England captain with an energy that only a live performer can understand. It’s magic. Truly. And if you’re skeptical, watch the three deliveries that preceded Cook blunting Mohammed Shami to end the session. Pitched up, angled in and seaming away, they demanded a shot from the batsman. They deserved an edge each time. But it didn’t happen. It couldn’t happen. Not today. Not to Cook.So Shami smiled as well and settled for the wicket of Keaton Jennings, bowled playing no shot. The opener’s series ends with seven of his nine innings yielding less than 25, and while there are genuine issues – he’s been dismissed leaving the ball twice in two Tests, so a lot of them must be in the mind – it is also important to note that he’s been dealing with some extremely good bowlers. They are accurate. And unlike previously, there are precious few opportunities for easy runs. In fact, two of India’s 10 best economy-rates since the turn of the century, while touring, have come in 2018.They could afford to focus all of their attention of picking up wickets thanks to their own efforts during a tail-end fightback. England began the day with a lead of 158 but Jadeja whittled that figure down to a mere 40 and took great pleasure doing so. When he reached his half-century, he dusted off his bat – it had been a while since he’s played international cricket – and whirled it around like a sword. England must be uncomfortably used to that celebration by now. After all, it was unveiled for the very first time about 10 miles from The Oval, back in 2014.Jadeja’s innings then was thrill-a-minute, in a match situation where he and his team had all to gain and nothing to lose. Here, they had to show fight – and an aptitude for defence – with the Test going against them. And he was more than up for it. The man faced 133 deliveries – 83 of were left alone or fell harmlessly by his feet. But, as will be custom with a player of his charisma – the Bharat Army sang “oooh Raavi Jadeeeeeja” the moment he strode out to the middle – it is the attacking shots that stand out. The six he hit straight back over James Anderson’s head or the cut off Moeen Ali, when he read the length so early and moved into position so quickly. There was also one gorgeous moment when he was at the non-strikers’ end and Jasprit Bumrah kept out a barrage of inswingers from Stuart Broad. Jadeja lifted his bat up and banged his fist into it, appreciating his team-mate’s determination. India’s last wicket added 32 runs off 55 balls. The No. 11 faced only 14 of them and scored 0.Jadeja looks comfortable as a batsman now. He has more trust in his technique, which is allowing him to spend more time at the crease, which in turn means he is giving himself the best chance to score runs. The debutant Hanuma Vihari worked that out for himself this morning and started allowing the ball to come to him, letting it swing before committing to a shot. He looked far removed from the batsman who had originally made his way out to the middle and promptly fallen over his front foot to be trapped plumb in front for 0. But umpire Joel Wilson, and England, offered him a lifeline. He made the most of it to score a 56 off 124 balls. As well as India fought back, there was one rather foul moment: the captain Virat Kohli burned both reviews within 12 overs and may well come to rue his judgment. It’s been hard work for batsmen in these five games. There have been 53 sessions – only four of them have been wicket-less. In the second innings here, England were not in control of 20 of the first 54 balls they faced. The odds are piled high and the expectation is palpable. After 161 Tests, Cook has all of England waiting with bated breath. There couldn’t be a better time for century number 33.

Ange ready to sell "quick" player for good as Spurs name asking price

Tottenham Hotspur are now becoming ready to sell a "quick" player for good as the Lilywhites reportedly settle on an asking price.

Spurs transfer plans taking fold

2024 will be a very interesting year when it comes to transfer activity at Spurs, with reports suggesting that new sporting director Johan Lange is prioritising the addition of a new left-sided centre-back.

Micky van de Ven's injury, which will keep him out for the remainder of the year, and a suspension for Cristian Romero have exposed Tottenham's glaring lack of depth in the position. As a result, it is believed Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly, Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah, Everton ace Ben Godfrey, Uruguay star Sebastian Caceres and Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi are all being considered by Spurs.

Elsewhere in the squad, it is believed that Spurs are eager to sign a new midfielder, leading to their newly-found interest in Fluminese star Andre as a possible replacement for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The Dane, despite manager Ange Postecoglou's short numbers, could still leave in January. However, he isn't the only player who could soon be set to depart, with defender Eric Dier out of contract in the summer. Exits will be a big talking point, as Spurs summer loanees will also be set to return at the end of the Premier League season.

Spurs now ready to sell Rodon

One of them, Wales international defender Joe Rodon, is currently enjoying a brilliant temporary stint at Leeds United in the Championship.

Leeds defender Joe Rodon.

The 26-year-old was signed by Jose Mourinho in 2020 but hasn't quite got his Spurs career off the ground, with TEAMtalk sharing an update on his future. It is now believed Tottenham would be ready to sell Rodon permanently, despite his excellent start at Elland Road, and are willing to do so for a fee in and around £20 million.

There have been suggestions that Spurs should recall the former Swansea City star from his loan spell at Leeds to solve Postecoglou's lack of defensive depth, but it appears the centre-back doesn't feature in his plans as things stand.

Rodon has started 12 second-tier games, becoming a mainstay under Daniel Farke, with Ben Davies hailing his "terrific" international teammate.

“Joe is a terrific player," said Davies.

"Every time I play with him with Wales he is very solid, good on the ball and I think we have a good understanding. To see him have success at Leeds, it really does make me happy.

“Joe is one of my best mates in football, so we speak all the time. He is the type of player that, when he is at somewhere he is feeling valued and he is getting a good run of games, he is a really, really good defender and I think he is showing that right now.”

Rodon has also been revered for his pace, with former Man United winger Ryan Giggs calling him "quick".

Zak Crawley overcomes his 90s nerves with maiden century

Crawley, the 20-year-old right-hander, hit a career-best 168 in a total of 436 as Kent posted a first innings lead of 250

ECB Reporters Network19-Sep-20181:48

Warwickshire deal Sussex’s promotion hopes a blow

ScorecardKent opener Zak Crawley hit a fluent maiden first-class century to bolster his side’s promotion hopes and leave them in total command of their Specsavers County Championship clash with Division Two basement side Glamorgan.Crawley, the 20-year-old right-hander, hit a career-best 168 in a total of 436 as Kent posted a first innings lead of 250 before leaving the visitors to bat out the final hour of day two.The visitors lost both openers Nick Selman and Stephen Cook, caught in the slips off Darren Stevens’ away-swingers within six overs. Kiran Carlson toe-ended a Joe Denly long-hop onto off stump and, in the final over of the day, night watchman Kieran Bull, fended one from Matt Henry to first slip.Wobbling on 33 for 4 at the close, Glamorgan will need a further 217 to make Kent bat again, but the day had belonged to Crawley. In only his 20th first-class appearance Crawley, who honed his batting on ‘The Head’, the 1st XI ground at Tonbridge School – the alma mater of Colin Cowdrey and, more latterly, Ed Smith, England’s national selector – Crawley played a four-hour innings crammed with top-handed cover drives that would have delighted Lord Cowdrey himself.”It feels very good to be stood here tonight with a first hundred to my name,” he said. “I’ve been waiting a while for it and have got out in the 90s a couple of times along the way, so to get over the line today was nice, but I was even more pleased to kick on afterwards.”I’m not usually one for getting nervous in the 90s because I always believed 99 was as good as a hundred, but I’ll admit I was nervous today. A couple of old memories started creeping in about getting out on 93 and 96 before, but once I got the all important single I was fine.Batting in tandem with Sam Billings, Crawley helped add 132 in 29 overs for the sixth wicket as Kent set about firstly reaching Glamorgan’s first innings of 186 and building a game-defining lead thereafter.Resuming on their overnight score of 93 for 2, Kent suffered their first loss in the eighth over when Harry Podmore, their night watchman, fell for 2 – the second of four Kent players to be caught behind when leg glancing. Heino Kuhn fell in similar fashion soon after, flicking airily against Ruaidhri Smith to be caught by Cooke.Crawley reached the 90s with a hooked six off Smith and went on to post his maiden ton in a shade over three hours, having hit 15 boundaries and faced 141 balls.Daniel Bell-Drummond went soon after, pushing half forward with low hands, the England Lions batsman gloved a catch to second slip to send Kent into lunch with a slender lead of four runs. The hosts pressed on after the resumption as Crawley plundered 24 boundaries, while Billings recorded his second half-century of a run-parched summer from 74 balls and with six fours. It took a very good delivery from Bull to finally dislodge Crawley, the only casualty of the mid-session, after 304 minutes at the crease. Prodding forward to his 237th ball, Crawley was deceived by the off-spinner’s flight and dip and a delivery that turned through the gate to clip middle stump.A short, sharp shower rushed the players off for an early tea just before 3pm, after which, Ollie Robinson fell for 17 on his home debut, once again caught down the leg side when glancing.Having battled away for three hours in posting 85 for his highest score since his last championship century against Gloucestershire in Bristol in August 2016, Billings fell to the first ball of a new spell from Michael Hogan. Pushed onto the back-foot by a ‘hit-the-deck’ delivery, the Kent captain was powerless to stop a shooting Hogan off-cutter from plucking out middle stump.Having past the career milestone of 15,000 first-class runs, Stevens perished for 30 when driving a Jeremy Lawlor away-swinger to extra cover, leaving Grant Stewart and Matt Henry to take the home score beyond 400.Having scored only two batting bonus points in their six previous home games, Kent notched five and a maximum eight bonus points in a match for the first time in 2018 before Henry holed out for 31 to leave Glamorgan to bat the remaining 14 overs of the day.
