Crystal Palace: Signing Moussa Dembele could bring the best out of Christian Benteke

According to recent reports from The Daily Record, Palace are interested in Celtic striker Moussa Dembele.

What’s the story?

The Daily Record report that interest in the striker is hotting up, with Palace one of the main clubs in contention.

Everton are the other club to be linked with the forward, but after a £14m move for Cenk Tosun and the signing of Theo Walcott last season, it seems unlikely the Toffees will add another striker to their squad without selling first.

The other option for Dembele appears to be a move to the Bundesliga. Borussia Dortmund are reported to be linked interested, but a return to England is likely the favoured option for the Frenchman.

Should Palace go after his signature?

Dembele, who is valued at £5.4m by transfermarkt.com, is exactly the kind of striker the Eagles need to be looking at in order to really push on next season. Also needing to reignite the career of Christian Benteke, who had a nightmare season last time out, signing Dembele could prove to be an incredibly shrewd move – whether that’s by increasing competition to keep the big Belgian on his toes, or forming a regular strike partnership to ease the goalscoring burden on his shoulders.

Dembele endured an injury-hit 2017/18 for Celtic and scored only 16 goals in his second season at the club, half his total of 32 the season before.

However, his quality is not to be doubted. A return to English football after two trophy-laden seasons at Celtic may be the perfect move for the 21-year-old, and his price tag of £20million should be able to be met by the South London side.

Southampton: The XI that Ralph Hasenhuttl should play against Tottenham

It has been a good few weeks for Southampton and Ralph Hasenhuttl. The Saints have lost just two of their last eight Premier League games, picking up vital wins over Watford, Norwich, Aston Villa and Chelsea while also grabbing a point against Arsenal and Crystal Palace. It represents an impressive turnaround for the south coast side, who were sat on eight points in 18th place after losing 9-0 to Leicester at St Mary’s towards the end of October – a defeat that Hasenhuttl feels was a turning point in Southampton’s season.

There is no rest for the wicked, however, and the Saints must embark on their fourth game in 11 days when Tottenham come to visit on Boxing Day – here’s the XI that we think Hasenhuttl should put out for that match…

As you can see, we think that Hasenhuttl should make two changes from the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace last time out.

Firstly, Sofiane Boufal should make way for Stuart Armstrong on the right of midfield, for the Moroccan was disappointing against the Eagles – much to the annoyance of these fans on Twitter after he had no shots and made no key passes – whereas Armstrong contrastingly drew praise from some supporters for his display against Chelsea recently.

The former Celtic man grabbed a wonderful assist for Nathan Redmond’s goal against the Blues and deserves to come back in due to Boufal’s poor display, while on the other side, we think that Moussa Djenepo also deserves a start after he terrorised Palace from the bench last time out – the Malian came on in the 62nd minute and completed five dribbles, while also having a shot on target and making one key pass.

Elsewhere, Hasenhuttl has stated that Michael Obafemi might not be an option as he recovers from illness, although Shane Long has returned to training and is “maybe” an option according to the former RB Leipzig boss – however, we feel that Che Adams should start alongside Danny Ings once again as he is fully fit.

Whose Line Is It Anyway: Roy Keane, Graeme Souness or Adrian Durham?

That would mean Redmond and Boufal drop out of the XI which started against Palace, and at a time where the games are coming thick and fast, it would make sense for Hasenhuttl to make a few changes.

In other news, this Southampton transfer target would kill two birds with one stone for Hasenhuttl…

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold receives huge compliment from Gary Lineker

Liverpool cruised to another comfortable win in the Premier League on Thursday night. This time around, it was Sheffield United who felt the sharp edge of Jurgen Klopp’s well-oiled machine as goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane sealed the 2-0 victory on the evening.Watch Liverpool Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

The Reds are still very much in firm control of the whole competition in the English top-flight as they stand 13 points clear with a game in hand, and with such a huge gap between them and the second-placed team, it’s difficult not to look at them as champions already.

While the plaudits should be given all across the board, Gary Lineker was particularly impressed with one man against Sheffield United – Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…

So much so that he posted a glowing endorsement of the defender just half an hour after the game had kicked off, calling him a “mind-boggling talent”.

Interestingly enough, Alexander-Arnold did record two key passes on the night along with two shots. But that’s nothing outside of the norm for the England international.

Just this season alone, the 21-year-old right-back has already tallied two goals and a total of ten assists across 29 games in all competitions.

The numbers simply don’t lie and Alexander-Arnold is a phenomenal young player.

In other news, Takumi Minamino’s purchase could give Klopp a welcoming conundrum to solve…

Should Rodgers tinker Liverpool’s ‘Plan A’ after just one game?

Juxtaposing their 6-1 massacre at the Britannia on the final day of last season, Liverpool will be counting their blessings this week after escaping Stoke City with a 1-0 win on Sunday.

But in a lethargic, uneventful and frankly drab 90 minutes decided by an early goal of the season contender from Philippe Coutinho, defying the boredom like a crimson rose spouting from a bed of horse manure, there were plenty of signs suggesting Liverpool’s Plan A for the 2015/16 Premier League campaign doesn’t necessarily work. Although one game doesn’t make a season, there were warnings Brendan Rodgers can’t afford to ignore.

Powerful target man Christian Benteke represents Liverpool’s biggest expenditure this summer – and indeed, Rodgers’ biggest since becoming Anfield boss in 2012. The Reds don’t have the best history when it comes to towering, old-fashioned centre-forwards; from Emile Heskey to Rickie Lambert, with Peter Crouch and Andy Carroll in between, none have managed a Premier League strike-rate better than one-in-four for the Merseysiders; and the Belgium international too looked a little out of place against the Potters.

[ffc-gal cat=”liverpool” no=”5″]

Of course, Benteke is a much more complete striker than many of the aforementioned names, with impressive feet and surprising mobility for such a predominantly physical presence, and as much as Liverpool must adapt to the kind of service he craves, the 24 year-old must work on the less attritional aspects of his game to suit their style of play.

The concern, however, is that the Reds did try to play to Benteke’s strengths at the Britannia; twelve crosses and 60 long-balls (a slight increase on their 57 average per match last season); but nothing quite paid off. Wide men Jordan Ibe and Adam Lallana managed just one accurate cross between them, whilst none of the Liverpool midfield were close enough to ghost in for second balls bouncing off the Belgian’s 6 foot 3 frame.

Top end Premier League stars are a malleable bunch. Although those crosses aren’t connecting and those second balls aren’t dropping right now, they could do in a month’s time.

Yet, throughout Liverpool’s squad there’s an abundant lack of natural width and crossing prolificacy; Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho, Lazar Markovic and Adam Lallana all prefer inside channels to outside ones, whilst right-back signing Nathaniel Clyne managed just 18 accurate crosses per match last term and didn’t attempt a single one against Stoke. Rather interestingly, the Reds’ most consistent crosser on Sunday was James Milner – who moved to Anfield, amongst other reasons, to reinvent himself as a centre-mid.

With three weeks of the summer window still to go, it’s worth finding a solution – Real Madrid’s Denis Cheryshev, an old-school touchline hugger, particularly coming to mind.

Likewise, although Coutinho’s wonder goal proved the decider against Mark Hughes’ side, the real turning point came when Emre can entered the fray from the bench just after the hour mark, with Rodgers changing the extra man in midfield from a No.10 to a holding player. Not only did it push the Reds further afield, creating that width Benteke needs, but it also gave Milner and Jordan Henderson integral license to roam.

Both are fantastically well-rounded midfielders who have proved successful in diverse roles throughout their careers. Yet both are naturally progressive players and they struggled to prove that until Can’s arrival, spending the majority of the previous hour plugging the gaps left behind by bombing full-backs or screening just in front of Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel. Although their work-rate and tenacity is encouraged, it’s always served them better going forward than towards their own goal, evident enough their shared eleven goals and 16 assists in the Premier League last season.

Adding Can to the equation made all the difference; suddenly, Milner and Henderson were getting into the advanced positions they’ve become synonymous with over the last few years, whilst the German international held ground and swept up in simple yet effective style. In my opinion, this should be the formula to Liverpool’s engine room for at least the next few games – it’s technical, powerful and balanced.

Of course, Brendan Rodgers is a tinkerer – perhaps the most serial tinkerer in the Premier League. There’s still question marks over his ability to manage a club as big as Liverpool and his record in the transfer market, but you have to give the man credit for how he turned the Reds’ 2014/15 campaign around by changing formation to a simply inspired 3-6-1 – a system that’s hardly been seen in the Premier League since the days of Glenn Hoddle.

The problem last season, however, was that the change came too late; by the time Rodgers’ boys had got to grips with the 3-6-1 in December, their top four hopes had already evaporated. Thus, it may be the first game out of 38, but if Liverpool’s Plan A isn’t producing the desired performances, the gaffer needs to change things up sooner rather than later. Liverpool’s Anfield clash with Premier League new boys Bournemouth next Monday certainly provides the right conditions to try something little different.

Will Arsenal finally move for this Bundesliga star before deadline day?

Whilst several Gunners fans throughout the country may ardently disagree with the following statement, Arsene Wenger and his determined Arsenal outfit simply won’t prove serious title challengers this season unless a few more big names are drafted in at the Emirates before transfer deadline-day.

Among the rest of the Premier League’s loyal followers, such a notion seemingly arrives as a pretty obvious one. Much has been said about Olivier Giroud and the subsequent role he will play at the club this season, for despite his impressive goal record so far in the English top-flight, the 28-year-old Frenchman just isn’t seen as the ideal centre-forward for Wenger with all things considered.

The Gunners have therefore been linked with a vast array of talent in the striking department this summer, yet their overall activity in the transfer market has thus far been anything but extensive to say the very least. However, although the now unlikely signing of a player like Karim Benzema would certainly have gone down well at the Emirates throughout 2015/16, Arsenal arguably need cover for Francis Coquelin in the defensive-midfield position more than anything else this term.

[ffc-gal cat=”arsenal” no=”5″]

So then, in light of Arsene Wenger’s reported long-term interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender over the last few seasons, will the Gunners finally make a move for the widely admired German before the closure of the summer transfer window?

Let’s face it, although the emergence of Arsenal’s Francis Coquelin certainly provided the Emirates faithful with a positive talking point last season, the uncompromising French battler will ultimately need some back up this campaign if his side are to prove successful in 2015/16.

Everyone knows that landing some meaningful silverware is now the North Londoners’ true aim – but if the Gunners expect Coquelin to single-handedly do the business both domestically and in the Champions League this term – Wenger will understandably be on the end of a fair bit of abuse once his side inevitably crumble under the weight of such lofty expectation. Europe’s finest outfits simply need to go into every passing season with adequate squad depth if they don’t want to be left behind.

Arsenal admittedly aren’t competing in the same ball-park as Chelsea or Manchester City when it comes to external finances, though. Both of the aforementioned clubs have been somewhat blessed in that department recently, whether or not their respective fan-bases choose to attribute their subsequent success to such an inconvenient notion. Either way, the Gunners may not be able to source a whole succession of marquee names each season in order to improve their fate out on the pitch – but does that mean Wenger has no cash left in the bank to spare this summer? – of course it doesn’t.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender would therefore represent a perfect new addition to the ranks at the Emirates this term, even if Arsenal still in-fact require another centre-forward to help them out up-top sooner rather than later. With both Francis Coquelin and Lars Bender patrolling the midfield for Wenger in 2015/16 however, the Emirates faithful would certainly have reason for renewed confidence.

The 26-year-old German may invariably set the Gunners back a bit in terms of resources this month – considering the midfielder’s reported £18 million price-tag – but perhaps his transfer fee ultimately highlights a certain hurdle that Arsenal just have to jump this summer.

Lars Bender is more than a mere ball-winner in the middle of the park after all. He has represented Germany on the international stage several times throughout his career, as well as turning out in the Champions League for Bayer on many different occasions. By all accounts, his is just the kind of experience Arsenal readily need at this current moment in their title quest.

Bender has proven a worthy captain out on the pitch at the BayArena, for he is a player that certainly leads by example. His overall leadership qualities are only matched by his exceptional reading of the game, brave demeanour just in front of the back-four, and classy style when releasing his teammates and finding space in the final third.

The talented German star may not represent the ultimate defensive-midfield candidate for Arsenal in the modern era by any means, but as he arguably symbolises the best available player out there to fill such an important void at the Emirates this season, Arsene Wenger should arguably be looking to complete this particular deal as soon as possible this summer.

If the current Gunners boss chooses against signing a player of Lars Bender’s description before transfer deadline-day however, the consequences will surely harm his side going into the new season.

Liverpool told to forget about headline-grabbing January addition

Liverpool idol Steven Gerrard will not make an emotional short-term loan return to Anfield during January, according to Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber.

The Kop hero left the Reds over the summer on a free transfer, ending a glittering career with his boyhood club to join LA Galaxy, following in the footsteps of David Beckham.

With the American season running through the summer months, players have moved from MLS sides to major European teams over the winter period to maintain their match fitness, with the likes of Beckham, Robbie Keane, Landon Donovan and Thierry Henry all high-profile examples.

However, Garber has revealed that the league is trying to cut down on these switches as it looks to establish itself as a major worldwide division, with Gerrard likely to stay in California when the 2015 campaign comes to a close:

“It doesn’t happen as much as it used to. David knows very well that I was really upset with the big hoopla and the massive commitment we made and then David went and played in Milan.” He is quoted by the Daily Star.

“People in our country said: ‘What? He plays for two teams?’ You are trying to build a sport. It was a challenge getting people to understand that.

“I don’t believe we are going to see many more off-season loans happening in our league particularly by what I would call the high level designated players.

“It’s been a couple of years. I don’t remember the last one we have had. With regards to Steven, I don’t think so. I have not heard that was something that was being contemplated.”

Such news is likely to come as a huge blow to many Liverpool fans, with Gerrard widely hailed as one of the club’s greatest ever players.

Striker signing a January priority, says Liverpool idol

John Barnes believes that Liverpool need another striker in January with Danny Ings and Daniel Sturridge’s injury woes a concern at Anfield.

The Reds secured their first win of the Jurgen Klopp era in League Cup action against Bournemouth on Wednesday following three draws on the spin.

Despite the German having made his side look far more solid at the back and more energetic in midfield, the lack of goals on Merseyside is becoming a worry, with Liverpool having not scored more than once in a match since last month’s 3-2 victory over Aston Villa.

WANT MORE? >> Liverpool transfer news | Latest transfer news

In that time both Ings and Sturridge have dropped out of the team through injury, while Christian Benteke’s own fitness concerns – he is ready for action now – have forced Klopp to rely on 20-year-old newbie Divock Origi as the focal point of his attack so far.

And although Barnes wants to see his old side add quality to every position in their squad, the TitanBet brand ambassador told Football FanCast that drafting in another striker should be a priority:

“Of course if you look at Daniel Sturridge not being fit, Danny Ings being out and Roberto Firmino not being a proper forward we only have Christian Benteke at the moment, so that’s an area to maybe get one in.

“But for me it’s more about the quality of the players rather than specific areas. If there’s a central midfielder, left winger or defender better than we already have, then the club have to do it.”

The Chelsea weakness that Spurs must exploit

London rivals Tottenham and Chelsea go head-to-head at White Hart Lane on Sunday with both entering the game with positive recent results and eager to herald another three points.

Although the current Premier League champions have had a slow start to the new campaign, they have been a bogey team for Spurs up until relatively recently.

The Lilywhites supporters will still have their 5-3 victory in the corresponding fixture last year fresh in their minds, but the assumption that Mauricio Pochettino’s men will automatically replicate it this weekend would be foolish.

Spurs are unbeaten in their last 12 Premier League games while Chelsea are floundering in mid-table, but with the quality in the visiting side, the North Londoners will need to be at their best to get a favourable result.

[ffc-gal cat=”tottenham” no=”5″]

Tottenham’s attacking play was distinctly crisp in their 4-1 win over West Ham last time out, with Harry Kane adding to his brace against the Hammers with the winner over Qarabag in the Europa League.

Although Kane and Christian Eriksen get most of the attacking plaudits in the Spurs side, there is another avenue that the hosts will need to exploit on Sunday to increase their chances of winning.

Although none of Chelsea’s back four have covered themselves in too much glory this season, the Blues have had real issues a left-back.

The catastrophic start to the campaign by right-back Branislav Ivanovic has seen Cesar Azpilicueta move back to his natural flank, with Jose Mourinho struggling for competent options to deputise for the Spaniard on the left.

In midweek against Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League, summer signing Baba Rahman got the nod to start and providing some inviting crosses for the Chelsea forwards to attack.

However, the former Augsburg man was not put under much pressure by the Israeli hosts, who played a considerable proportion of the game with ten men. Rahman’s last domestic outing came at the Britannia Stadium, where the Blues were beaten 1-0 by Stoke and the Ghanaian defender was given a torrid time by Xherdan Shaqiri.

Mourinho has also opted to play Brazilian youngster Kenedy at left-back recently, somewhat strangely given that he is naturally an attacking player and is still starting out in his career.

Regardless of who lines up at left-back for Chelsea on Sunday, Pochettino’s side would be advised to apply the relevant pressure.

Kyle Walker may well be a defensive liability at times but his pace and energy on the front foot is an attacking weapon that Spurs can use here.

It will likely be Son Heung-min that starts from the right of midfield again, and as such getting the ball to the talented South Korean’s feet and letting him attack seems like another sensible ploy.

Much of Spurs’ play is directed centrally or through Eriksen on the left, but Pochettino may well urge his side to look to the other flank once the opposition team-sheet is revealed at the weekend.

Manchester United captain not guaranteed starting place for PSV clash

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has warned club captain Wayne Rooney that he shouldn’t expect being instantly brought back into the starting line-up after recovering from an illness, Mirror reports.

Rooney was sidelined for the Red Devils’ 2-1 win over Watford at Vicarage Road last weekend, but is now back in full training ahead of their Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.

WANT MORE? >> Manchester United Transfer News | Latest Transfer News

However, Van Gaal insists that Rooney is not a guaranteed starter, and that he needs to prove himself to earn back his spot.

“That is not automatic,” he said. “It is always a decision of the manager.

“I compare, I compare always players with each other and I take into account that how fit they are and how fit they show in the training sessions.

“That’s why Marouane Fellaini, Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney have to show it on the training ground.

“Then I have to compare players with who are the best players to fit in with our game-plan. That is the same procedure with every match. Fitness is the most important thing. He has to show his fitness.”

The England international was not the only star player to receive a caution, with Van Gaal also warning Memphis Depay despite the winger scoring in their victory against Watford.

“I am a coach that always demands, not only one match, but several [good] matches,” said Van Gaal. “But what I have said is that it is always the same procedure. I compare players and the ones I think are best in our game-plan, they shall play.

“I think how he played [at Watford], it was more or less the same system as I played with the Dutch national team and he has more freedom. It is like Arjen Robben, he has more freedom and these players are feeling so happy with their freedom and he can excel then.

“He showed that in the first-half, especially. In the second-half he was a bit less [effective] than in the first. But that is also logical when you’re not playing, because the match rhythm of the Premier League is very high.”

If United manage to beat PSV, they are guaranteed to qualify for the knock-out phase after missing out on the competition entirely the previous term.

After playing the Dutch champions, Man United will travel to the KingPower Stadium to play league leaders Leicester City on Saturday.

Five players to replace De Bruyne in your Fantasy Premier League team

Given the recent injury to Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne, who will be out of action for 10 weeks, every Fantasy Premier League player will need to consider suitable replacements.

The attacker has picked up a good points tally (105) in his debut campaign so far with five goals and another nine assists as he is the highest earning midfielder in the squad.

However, with De Bruyne out for such a long time, selling him will earn you quite a bit of money to further your options in search of the perfect alternative.

It’s too bad the Belgium international will be unavailable given that City face 19th place Sunderland, with the match likely to see goals.

There are a few straightforward replacements and some risky choices, but all that depends on how much you want to gamble in order to see your selection pay off.

So, here are five Fantasy Premier League players you should consider as an alternative to injured Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne.

David Silva

The first choice is none other than Kevin De Bruyne’s teammate David Silva (9.9), who is likely to become the main attacking playmaker with the Belgian star unavailable for selection.

Given that De Bruyne is now worth (10.6), his sale will likely reward you with enough points to make a like-for-like trade for Silva. With a match against Sunderland coming up, this could be a very beneficial choice.

Christian Eriksen

Tottenham Hotspur star Christian Eriksen (8.4) could be another good shout given his form from his previous two matches. He picked up 15 points two weeks ago and was rewarded with another seven this past weekend.

He also has very similar stats to Kevin De Bruyne, with the Denmark international scoring four goals while providing another eight assists. Eriksen will be hoping he can continue his performance when Spurs travel to face Norwich in the next round of fixtures.

Willian

Chelsea star Willian (7.1) has been one of the standout performers for his side this season despite their shocking form so far. With the Blues slowly finding their form in recent weeks, Willian could play a key role in their revival.

The Brazilian attacker has already scored three goals while providing another seven assists this term and is a much cheaper alternative to Kevin De Bruyne who is now worth (10.6). Willian will see his side take on Watford away from home as they look to pick up another three points.

Roberto Firmino

Liverpool attacker Roberto Firmino (7.9) is a very interesting selection given that manager Jurgen Klopp has been playing him as a forward in recent weeks. He racked up 18 points in Gameweek 23, adding to his tally of five goals and five assists so far.

Despite the fact that his side will face league leaders Leicester City, having him in your team could be a safe bet given that the Reds play 19th place Sunderland and 20th place Aston Villa following their trip to the King Power Stadium.

Alexis Sanchez

Finally, Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez (10.8) could be a tough transfer if you don’t have any funds left in your bank given that he is worth (0.2) more than Kevin De Bruyne.

The Chilean attacker will be keen on getting back to his scoring ways after finally returning to full fitness following an injury spell. He featured for 34 minutes against Chelsea at the weekend and was a constant threat for the Gunners. Sanchez has so far registered six goals while providing another two assists this season.
