'Have seen happier dressing rooms than Pakistan's currently' – Flower

The batting coach spoke about Pakistan batsmen’s shot selection, the pressure their captain is under and how the players need to adapt

Pakistan batting coach Grant Flower admits he has “seen happier dressing rooms” than the one he finds himself in with the team right now. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo in the wake of Pakistan’s defeat inside three days at South Africa’s hands in Centurion, he also warned a lot of the players’ places would be under threat following a collapse that saw Pakistan cede a commanding position at tea on the second day to succumb to a tame six-wicket reverse.”The atmosphere isn’t the best at the moment,” Flower said. “Not many losing teams’ atmosphere will be the best. No one likes to lose. You don’t want to become happy losers. I’m not involved in selection, but there are quite a few guys with their places under threat. It’s not just one or two batsmen, you could point fingers at a few players.”Evidence of a breakdown in the morale of the camp further emerged following stumps on the second day, the one which oversaw a Pakistan collapse that all but put them out of the game, with a dressing room leak reporting coach Mickey Arthur had lost his temper with the players, in particular giving some of the batsmen an earful. Although the PCB later issued a statement denying Arthur so much as became angry, there is little doubt he did make his displeasure known, with Flower saying the real problem was the incident being leaked to the media.ALSO READ: Arthur gives Pakistan’s seniors dressing-room dressing down”We don’t know who it is [the leaker]. But they’ve got to look at themselves in the mirror. It should never happen. On tour it’s all about teamwork, you’re supposed to be a family and trust each other. But I’ve been with the team over four years and there have been constant leaks all the time. It’s nothing new for me, so it doesn’t really come as a surprise.”Mickey had some strong words with the players; there was quite a bit of honesty from him. I think the guys were a bit shell-shocked, but they’ve heard Mickey, everyone knows he can come down harshly on the boys at times. But sometimes that’s needed and the guys needed to be told a few home truths. Mickey won’t be the first or last coach to do that. If the guys do have strong character, they’ll bounce back from it and take that as a challenge.”Much of Arthur’s wrath, ESPNcricinfo understands, was directed at the more experienced middle-order batsmen in the camp. Despite Pakistan’s perceived batting weakness lying at the top of the order, Imam-ul-Haq and Shan Masood had manged to give their side a solid foundation by tea, with the score reading 100 for 1. And in a session where the middle order might have built on the start and given South Africa a daunting fourth innings target, a string of poor shots saw the visitors lose nine wickets in the session, bowled out by stumps.Arthur’s mood had not improved by the following morning, and when Dean Elgar seemed to be dismissed in the slips by Azhar Ali, the third umpire overturned the soft signal of out to give him a reprieve that saw him score a half-century and kill off any Pakistan hopes. Arthur went to the third umpire to remonstrate, earning him a demerit point in the process, but Flower found himself in agreement with the coach.ALSO READ: Azhar took a ‘clean’ catch, on-field decision should have stayed – Sarfraz”In my opinion, it was the wrong decision. And the on-field umpire gave that out. And there was no conclusive evidence otherwise, so he should have upheld that decision.”Pakistan players react after Dean Elgar is given not out•AFP

The Pakistan middle order found itself under severe scrutiny over the past few days, and Flower felt the dismissal of Asad Shafiq, in particular, showed what pressure could do to Pakistan.”He’s one of the strongest guys mentally, but when you’re under pressure, things can change. Technically, that ball that he hit in the second innings, his back foot didn’t go across at all. There’s no weight transfer towards the delivery. That’s what pressure does. He had a big call the ball before, and when you’re under pressure, your reactions aren’t as quick as they need to be against the best attack in the world at the moment. Whenever people seem to be writing off Asad he comes through with a big hundred. If he is given that chance again I’d back him. He’s definitely good enough and should be playing for Pakistan.”The issue of Sarfraz Ahmed’s declining fortunes had long simmered in the background as an itch to be scratched, but of late has emerged front and centre as a borderline crisis. With the Pakistan captain struggling badly for runs sporting a technique that looks unlikely to flourish in this part of the world – he appears to be crouching far too low on what are almost tennis ball bounce pitches – Pakistan have been left with a captain out of form and no obvious captaincy replacement.”Anyone would agree being a captain, batsman and wicketkeeper is probably the hardest job in cricket,” Flower said. “And probably too hard. I’m sure it would help his batting if he didn’t have the captaincy pressure, but that’s how it is at the moment. If that’s going to continue, then he has to find a way of coping with those pressures technically and mentally.”It’s a tough one. Saifi’s a really good bloke who’s having a bad run. Technically, just trying to work on being able to leave the ball and not defending outside off stump, getting underneath the short ball. I thought we were progressing, but obviously the results show otherwise. It’s a tough one, when you’re in a rut.”Flower also revealed Mohammad Rizwan had been looking very good in the nets, and came to the tour on the back of good form, with the caveat that these pitches were worlds apart from the ones where he had prospered recently. He also singled out Fakhar Zaman as a player who would have to adapt to conditions here in South Africa, and understand he couldn’t play the way he had been doing back home.”Mickey is quite a big Fakhar fan, and so am I. He’s got to realise, though, he can’t play the same way on these South African wickets as he does in the UAE because the bounce is totally different. He’s got to adapt and be mature enough to know that. Regarding that second innings dismissal, it’s a bit hit and miss. You can’t just tee off and hope it’ll land in no man’s land. In Test cricket you’ve got to be more circumspect than that. I told him, and he’s admitted to that. So hopefully he’ll improve.”Pakistan also may find themselves deprived of having all their players back, with Flower disclosing Haris Sohail was still struggling with the knee injury that plagued him in Centurion, and the Cape Town Test may come too soon for him. That would suggest an unchanged top three for the second Test, where pace hasn’t been quite as hard to combat as Pakistan found it in Centurion.”Quite a few of the guys struggled on these wickets. Even the South Africa players who know these conditions said this track was bloody hard. People can say whatever they want, but they’ve got to bear in mind these are tough conditions. But good players adapt, and our players have to adapt quickly before the Newlands Test.”The track isn’t quite as bouncy there, and we have got a good team. They’re used to fighting hard and coming out of the corner so we’ll see what happens at Newlands.”

Australia playing catch-up on spin as World Cup looms

Australia’s ODI series defeat by India exposed another major flaw in the national team’s approach to 50-over matches since the 2015 World Cup

Daniel Brettig19-Jan-20190:25

Hodge: Australia need to decide their lead spinner for World Cup

Australia’s ODI series defeat by India exposed another major flaw in the national team’s approach to 50-over matches since the 2015 World Cup – chiefly their reluctance to play spin meaning they have now fallen well and truly behind the leading opponents in terms of white ball tweaking options.Four years ago, Australia did not include a single full-time spin bowler in their team for the pointy end of the global tournament, leaving Xavier Doherty on close to exclusive drinks duty while Nathan Lyon did not even make the squad. Since then, Adam Zampa, Ashton Agar and Lyon have all been tried, but without the consistency or faith extended by most other countries to their slow bowlers. The contrast with India at the MCG on Friday night was stark, as the tourists were able to shuffle out Kuldeep Yadav and replace him with the highly-skilled Yuzvendra Chahal while at the same time also employing Ravindra Jadeja and Kedar Jadhav. Meanwhile the Australians had dropped Lyon for Zampa, maintaining a policy of only using one spinner at most while seldom giving that one slow bowling option an extended run in the team.England, another leading nation in 50-over matches, have been consistent in using both Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid, with the latter in particular blossoming into a world class threat to batsmen in the middle overs of an innings.Justin Langer, Australia’s coach, noted the contrast between Chahal’s record haul of 6 for 42 and Zampa’s 0 for 34, after Lyon had also gone without a wicket in each of the first two matches of the series. In going on to identify the importance of wicket-taking spinners in the middle overs of an innings, Langer exposed how little investment Austrlaia had placed in white-ball spin bowling for most of the four years they have had to prepare for this year’s World Cup in England.”Nathan Lyon is probably the best off-spinner in the world. The reason why he didn’t play is that we felt that he had played two games on the back of the philosophy of trying to take wickets … then we hadn’t taken any wickets,” Langer said. “Also with the number of right handers in the Indian side, we decided to go with ‘Zamps’ to spin the ball away from the bat rather than into it.”But Nathan Lyon is a gun. He is a world-class spinner … he is a very good fielder and one of our senior members of the team. We don’t traditionally play two spinners in one-day cricket, but it might come up in the World Cup. And certainly, in India and the UAE, there’s a good chance that will happen. There might be opportunities … where you might play both of them. If it doesn’t, depending on the opposition, we’ll pick one of those two to play in the World Cup.Adam Zampa exults after picking a wicket•Getty Images

“We have identified, though, that you have got to, between the 10-and-40-over mark, we have got to take wickets otherwise it gets down to the end and that’s what happened to us. We lost wickets in the middle overs and then you get down to the end and you haven’t got your main batsmen in.”Zampa enjoyed a pair of highly successful series, a triangular tournament against West Indies and South Africa, then a bilateral in Sri Lanka, during 2016. But since then he has been starved of opportunities, playing 34 ODIs overall whereas Kuldeep has played 35 despite debuting for India more than a year after Zampa. Chahal has also played 35 in a shorter time-span than Zampa.”If he can spin the ball both ways, he becomes a fantastic option for us, as we are seeing all round the world,” Langer said of Zampa. “It’s no secret to anyone that the leg-spinner is having a huge impact on the game and most of them who are can spin it both ways and ‘Zamps’ showed, some of those leggies he bowled and wrong-uns, was very pleasing.”So in addition to top order batting, a balance of shotmaking and strike rotation in the middle and more adroit use of pace, spin is yet another area in which the Australian ODI team is playing catch-up, dangerously close to the start of the World Cup.

England’s predicted XI for Qatar 2022 – Where are they now?

We may have only just about gotten over that penalty miss against France in Qatar, but the world of football waits for no man, and we are now just seven months away from the 2024 edition of the European Championships, which will be hosted in Germany.

With that in mind, we here at Football FanCast have decided to take a look at the XI the Independent thought would win us the World Cup last year.

They may have made these picks a decade ago, and as we all know, prediction is a fool's game, but blimey, some of these picks are, well, let's just say, interesting.

So, let's take a look.

12 Goalkeeper – Jack Butland Rangers – Nine Caps

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland

Okay, so as predictions go, we reckon this was a pretty smart one, and the Independent certainly weren't the only ones tipping a young Jack Butland to achieve great things for both club and country.

In 2013, the Bristol-born shot-stopper earned himself an exciting move to Stoke City after impressing for Birmingham City in the Championship. However, some dodgy loan spells at Barnsley, Leeds United and Derby County damaged his reputation, and after spending seven injury-ridden years with the Potters, he finally moved to Crystal Palace.

Unfortunately, he fared no better in the capital.

After three years that saw him make just ten Premier League appearances for the Eagles and spend six months on loan at Manchester United, he again moved on to find more playing time.

In June 2023, he joined Scottish giants Rangers, and while the team have struggled somewhat this season, Butland has been one of their stand-out performers and looks to have finally found a massive team in which he can excel.

In terms of his international career, he has earned nine senior England caps, the last of which came in 2018 against Switzerland, and we reckon that'll likely be his final cap for the Three Lions as well.

Not a bad prediction, just one hampered by injuries and what could have been.

11 Left-back – Luke Shaw Manchester United – 31 Caps

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw.

Now, while there are primarily misses on this list, including Luke Shaw, a decade ago is an unequivocal hit.

Not only has the full-back become England's starting left-back, he has also become one of the first names on the team sheet at Manchester United.

Shaw was still playing for Southampton at the time of this prediction and would spend another year down on the south coast, so this really was a great shout.

Shaw picked up his first senior cap for the Three Lions in May 2014 in a friendly against Denmark, and were it not for a litany of injuries in the intervening nine years, he would undoubtedly have many more today.

He might not have helped us win the World Cup last year, but he still could one day, right?

10 Centre-back – Nathaniel Chalobah West Bromwich Albion – One Cap

The first of our two centre-backs now, and while there was certainly some logic to picking Nathaniel Chalobah at the time, given his vast experience in the youth setup, it's still a pretty big miss.

At the time, the young defender was still at Chelsea, but with it almost impossible for him to break through then, he opted to leave in search of regular minutes.

He would go on several loans in the next few years, spending time at Burnley, Reading and even Napoli, before finally leaving on a permanent deal when he joined Watford in 2017.

Four years with the Hornets was followed by two with Fulham before he then signed for his current team, West Bromwich Albion.

He has only made one senior appearance for the Three Lions, and worse still, it was for just a single minute in a 2018 Nations League game against Spain.

9 Centre-back – Phil Jones Without a club – 27 Caps

This, again, wasn't the worst of calls; if anything, Phil Jones would likely have many more senior caps were he not so injury-prone.

His England debut came in a European qualifier against Montenegro in 2011, and in the following seven years, he would pick up 26 more, with his final two coming in the 2018 World Cup.

Jones was playing for Manchester United at the time of the prediction and was still seen as someone with sky-high potential, so we'll let them off with this pick.

8 Right-back – Chris Smalling Roma – 31 Caps

We are onto their last defensive prediction here, and you know what? It's another that doesn't look as bad as it could have in retrospect.

That said, at right-back? Not sure about that.

At the time, Chris Smalling had only been at Manchester United for two seasons, and while he wasn't playing every minute of Premier League action, he certainly looked good.

Ultimately, though, he would never fulfil his potential at Old Trafford, and the last few years of his time there were rather bleak. Had we looked back at this prediction then, we might have been a little harsher.

However, a loan move to Roma in summer 2020 revitalised the former Fulham man, and following a stellar season, he moved there on a permanent deal the following year and has looked class ever since.

His first England cap came in 2011 against Bulgaria, and his last in 2017 against Scotland.

7 Left midfield – Wilfried Zaha Galatasaray – Two Caps

Okay then, here we are, the first objective, undeniable stinker on this list, and it's only made all the funnier by the fact that the player is a regular international now, just for the wrong country.

Is there a way to be more off the mark than that?

Now, to be fair to them, Wilfried Zaha was and is an incredibly talented footballer, and we can't fault the Independent for predicting a bright international future for him at the time, but come on, the fact that they were correct, just for the wrong country is very amusing.

Zaha is currently plying his trade for Turkish giants Galatasaray, and after a slow start, he is tearing it up for them both domestically and in the Champions League.

His only two caps for Three Lions came in 2012 and 2013, totalling a massive 20 minutes of game time – we can see why he chose the Ivory Coast, to be fair.

6 Central midfielder – Jack Wilshere Retired – 34 Caps

jack-wilshere-arsenal-academy-edu-arteta-myles-lewis-skelly-manager

Okay, so we are back to pretty reasonable predictions now. There was a general expectation that Jack Wilshere would be at the heart of England's midfield for the foreseeable future back in 2013, as by that point, he was firmly established as one of Arsenal's best players.

He was a fantastically gifted footballer, but one that was seemingly made of glass.

The tenacious midfielder was blighted with injuries throughout his short career and missed a shocking 315 competitive games between 2009 and 2020, averaging out at around 28 a season, per Transfermarkt.

Jack Wilshere will always be one of the quintessential 'what if' players.

Oh, and he's been retired for over a year, which would make his inclusion in an England team somewhat challenging.

5 Central midfielder – Ross Barkley Luton Town – 33 Caps

Oh dear, we are firmly back in miss territory again with the inclusion of former Everton and Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley.

We have to be somewhat fair and grant that back in 2013, Barkley was looking like one of the best up-and-coming midfielders in the Premier League, but following his move to Chelsea in January 2018, he seemed to regress into half the player he was for the Toffees.

He would make just 100 appearances across all competitions for the Blues in the four-and-a-half years before joining OGC Nice last September. Unfortunately for the 29-year-old, that move also failed, and he joined Luton Town on a one-year deal this summer.

We reckon his most recent cap against Bulgaria in 2019 might be his last.

4 Right midfield – Jordan Ibe Ebbsfleet United FC – Four Caps

The misses keep coming, and this might be the biggest yet, former Liverpool and Bournemouth winger Jordan Ibe.

While we can see where they were coming from for a lot of these picks, we really can't wrap our heads around this one. At the time of publishing their article, Ibe had made just a single senior appearance for the Reds, and while he was highly thought of, there were other more obvious choices.

Since then, Ibe moved to the Cherries for four years before cycling through several clubs, including Derby County, Turkish second division side Adanaspor, and his current side, National League outfit Ebbsfleet United.

We hope he can rediscover his form of old and fight his way back up the pyramid, but another England cap might just be a step too far.

3 Striker – Daniel Sturridge Unattached – 26 Caps

This is another choice we can't really fault them for making at the time, as the 2013/14 season was probably Daniel Sturridge's peak as a player, and to give him credit, it was an impressive one.

In 29 Premier League appearances, he scored 22 goals and provided nine assists as he formed a deadly partnership with Luis Suárez that almost won Liverpool the league.

However, as with Wilshere, injuries got the best of him, and he never reached the same heights again. He was last playing for Australian side Perth Glory but had his contract terminated after six games that brought no goals, again in part due to injury.

His 26th cap, which came against Lithuania in 2017, will likely be his last as he is still without a club.

Nuno could unearth his next Diogo Jota in Forest’s "electric" £25k-p/w gem

Nottingham Forest have now played six matches without picking up a win, losing five in the process.

The latest defeat occurred last Friday in a 2-0 home loss to Spurs, which puts Forest 17th in the Premier League with 14 points from 17 games.

With that in mind, it is no surprise that Steve Cooper has just been sacked by Forest, with ex-Tottenham Hotspur boss Nuno Espirito Santo set to take charge immediately, according to the Mirror.

Nuno Santo’s managerial stats

The 49-year-old manager is best known for his time at Wolves, where he coached his side to a Championship title and consecutive seventh-place finishes following that promotion. He brought European football to the club, making it all the way to the Europa League quarterfinals in 2020.

Most recently, Santo has been coaching in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ittihad, where he was sacked last month following a run of five Saudi Pro League games without a win. However, two of the three trophies of the ex-Spurs boss' managerial career occurred in Saudi Arabia.

How Nuno Santo can get the best out of Anthony Elanga

Santo’s approach to football is very reminiscent of Jose Mourinho’s, with the defensive side of the game prioritised before any form of attack can be considered. This is a slightly tedious way of playing, which means that when results are going your way, it's good, but when the team is losing, it can be extremely uninspiring.

However, a player who can thrive with Santo at the helm is ex-Manchester United forward Anthony Elanga. The £25k-per-week Sweden international has been effective for Forest since being signed for £15.1m in the summer, particularly from the bench – with the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal where he got an assist and the 1-0 win versus Chelsea where he scored the winner springing to mind.

Overall, the 21-year-old has contributed six goals in just 11 starts this season, and with the right system, the new boss could unearth his next Diogo Jota – a player who scored 53 goals and contributed 27 assists under Santo's watch in 169 outings.

Just like the Liverpool player did under Santo at Wolves, Elanga can feature off the left as a winger, playing off a target man such as Taiwo Awoniyi, the equivalent of Jota’s Raul Jimenez, or even as a lone striker if needed.

This system could easily be replicated at Forest, with Santo having similar players who fit the successful mold. Elanga would most likely feature behind the Nigerian attacker on the left, partnering Morgan Gibbs-White in the attack of the preferred 3-4-2-1/3-4-3.

Elanga is at his best when he has space to run into, using the “electric” pace that Paul Robinson recently praised him for to breeze past opponents on the counterattack. The United academy graduate is the definition of an athlete, and Santo’s sit-in, soak-up-the-pressure, and go approach would suit Elanga perfectly.

The main difference between Jota and the Forest winger is that the former Wolves player displayed more natural goalscoring traits, but with focused training from Santo on finishing and potentially chance creation, there is no reason why Elanga cannot even surpass the Wolves version of Jota.
