Chelsea are set to make a first move for Karim Benzema today ahead of a possible Stamford Bridge transfer, according to reports.

One of those players who has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for the second half of the season has been Al-Ittihad forward Benzema, with Chelsea holding internal talks over a deal. Now, it looks as if they are ready to make their move.

The Daily Express shared an update in their live transfer blog on Wednesday morning, claiming the Blues are closing in on Benzema and are expected to make contact over a deal today.

“Chelsea are today expected to make contact with Karim Benzema over a move to the club – with a loan move the favoured option for both parties. Benzema has reportedly submitted a formal request to leave Al-Ittihad, having been made to train alone after returning late from his holiday.”

Benzema, the 2022 Ballon d'Or winner, is now 36 years of age and made the move to the Saudi Pro League last summer after leaving Real Madrid. He has continued to find the back of the net on a regular basis with his new side and has over 450 goals for club and country during his career.

The Frenchman has, as expected, come in for plenty of praise during his career, including from pundit Joe Cole, who said:

“The levels this lad is hitting are unbelievable. Him and (midfielder Luka) Modric have been almost a decade together and they know each other so well. He's just a joy to watch.”

Meanwhile, Steve McManaman added:

“People across Europe are really starting to view him (as a great player). He's not just a good finisher, he's an extraordinary football player.”

Therefore, on a short-term solution, Benzema could well be open to playing in the Premier League for the first time in his career, and Chelsea are seemingly keen on the idea of having the striker on their books for the remainder of the campaign, making this one to watch.

Since the start of the 2023/24 campaign, Tottenham have demonstrated their ability to succeed in the Premier League once again after enduring a difficult year that resulted in a lowly eighth-placed finish and Harry Kane's sale to Bayern Munich.

But Postecgolou's appointment has changed all and there is now a real sense that a glowing new chapter has arrived, with the lack of depth the main reason behind a decline in form before the festive period.

Star playmaker James Maddison is soon set to return from injury after a few months on the sidelines and while Szymanski would not disrupt the England star's playing time, it could spell the end for Giovani Lo Celso, who is out of contract in 2025 and has been linked with a move away this season despite enjoying some success in the first-team.

The Argentine is one of the most creative midfielders around and ranks among the top 1% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, pass completion and progressive passes, the top 8% for shot-creating actions and the top 4% for tackles per 90, as per FBref.

Organisers of the Cricket World Cup are “reviewing circumstances” after a spectator sustained a broken arm at the end of the game between England and Afghanistan in Manchester on Tuesday.The spectator ran on to the playing field at the end of the match and, as he approached players, was apprehended by stewards. He fell heavily and was subsequently taken to hospital where the broken arm was diagnosed.But it is the events leading up to the incident that may concern organisers just as much. Earlier in the game another spectator – who had been sitting close to the group who came on at the end of the match – ran on to the pitch and removed the bails at both ends. He was not apprehended until he crossed the advertising hoardings on the opposite side of the ground.Other spectators in the same stand claim passive stewarding did nothing to prevent the incident. They also claim the spectator – who they say was young and inebriated – was not removed from the ground but kept in a holding area by a public bar for several hours. As a result, they suggest there was little disincentive to deter other pitch invaders.Pitch invasion is considered a criminal act in the UK. An announcement is made before each match warning spectators that anyone encroaching on the playing area will be prosecuted for aggravated trespass and could face heavy fines.
