Man Utd set to hold talks over deal to sell £275k-p/w forward

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing up a swoop for Crystal Palace's Dougie Freedman to become their new head of recruitment ahead of the summer.

The Independent have reported that the Red Devils want to snap up the sporting director from their Premier League rivals to immediately take over as their recruitment chief.

They are currently waiting for Dan Ashworth, their prospective technical director, to complete his gardening leave before officially joining from Newcastle United, which is why they are keen to bring Freedman in as soon as possible in the meantime.

Dan Ashworth for England.

If they snap up the Palace figure, he could have a big deal to oversee almost instantly as the club are reportedly set to hold talks over a sale of one of their forwards.

Latest Manchester United transfer news

According to HITC, the Red Devils want to cash in on Jadon Sancho for good this summer at the end of his loan spell with Borussia Dortmund. The report claims that both parties are in agreement that a permanent exit at the end of this season is the best solution, after the England international fell out with manager Erik ten Hag.

They state that Dortmund are keen to keep him in Germany for the 2024/25 campaign, and potentially beyond, as they would be interested in another loan deal with an option to make it permanent in the summer of 2025.

Jadon Sancho

However, United either want a sale this year or an obligation to buy at the end of any loan deal, which is a potential sticking point in negotiations. HITC add that the two clubs are now set to hold talks to discuss the former Manchester City's starlet future beyond the end of his current loan over the coming weeks.

The £275k-per-week outcast was described as "not important" by ten Hag earlier this term due to his unavailability after a falling out with the boss, which led to his return to Dortmund.

How is Sancho getting on at Dortmund?

Sancho rejoined the German giants during the January transfer window but has yet to rediscover his best form back in familiar settings over the last couple of months. The 23-year-old whiz registered eight goals and 11 assists in 24 Bundesliga starts during the 2020/21 campaign for Dortmund prior to his move to Old Trafford, which is a goal or an assist every 1.26 starts on average.

As you can see in the table above, the United flop has one goal contribution in five starts in the German top-flight. He has also been wasteful in front of goal with three 'big chances' missed and zero goals. This unimpressive form comes off the back of zero goals and zero assists in three Premier League appearances for the Red Devils at the start of this season.

His statistics for the German side so far do not suggest that Ten Hag will regret how he handled the situation. In fact, his form may make it easier for United to sanction an exit, as it does not appear as though the young winger is ready to make an impact in the Premier League any time soon.

'Jofra thought he could rip my head off or get me out' – Matthew Wade on epic duel

Gripping duel lights up final afternoon of series, as Hobart team-mates epitomise the intensity of Ashes cricket

Daniel Brettig at The Oval15-Sep-2019At the end of an English summer and an Ashes series that had provided so many passages to remember, Jofra Archer and Matthew Wade squared up for the last of them. Archer was striving for a final burst of wickets to seal the Test, Wade for a century to underline his re-emergence as a batsman of quality after too many years as an indifferent wicketkeeper.Even if the Ashes were already Australia’s and the match was more or less already England’s, 24,000 spectators were transfixed one more time as Archer, for the umpteenth time, backed up his words that the touring coach Justin Langer had “another thing coming” after suggesting that Test cricket would beat the 24-year-old down with its sheer physical brutality.Undoubtedly, Wade had enriched the occasion through his series-long dialogue when in the field, yammering away at whoever would listen and many who would not, at one point talking across Archer about their shared history at the Hobart Hurricanes and how, in the opinion of Travis Head, the fast man would be moving across Bass Strait to the Adelaide Strikers next summer. All this history, plus the sense that this was summer’s final fling, made for a wondrous contest.”We all thought he’d slow down eventually but I can tell you that, through that spell, he certainly didn’t slow down too much, and he kept coming,” Wade said. “I was saying to Patty ‘he’s going again’. Patty was like ‘you’re right, you’ll get through’. I was like ‘yeah, we’ve been saying that for four overs now!’. He just keeps coming and coming. It’s good hard Test cricket, I was feeling comfortable with the way I was playing.”I felt like I could deal with what he was delivering, and he obviously thought he could rip my head off or get me out. It was a good battle, there was a little bit of banter, no words really. Just good, hard Test cricket. That’s what I expected coming into an Ashes series, I’d never played an Ashes series before and the way Jofra has taken to Test cricket – I knew he was obviously a freakish talent – and when he was around the England team I knew he’d be playing this series.”That’s what Test cricket is. Especially Ashes cricket, you’ve got to be ready for the contest. It’s a take-no-prisoners kind of environment when you walk onto the ground and when you walk off the ground, all is forgotten. You move on with your lives, hopefully he comes to Hobart and plays with me again but we’ll wait and see. That’s the way it is.”At the height of the battle, Archer struck Wade a stinging blow on the shoulder, something the Tasmanian did his very best to shrug off. “A little bit of a bruise. I wasn’t showing him too much, I wasn’t letting him know, that would have got him going again. I don’t know how many overs he bowled in a row, it felt like a long, long time so I wasn’t showing him too much pain. I was just trying to get through it.”The spell, all up, lasted for eight overs and ended wicketless. Wade went on to his fourth Test century, going a long way to shoring up his spot for the Gabba Test against Pakistan in November, and demonstrating how he had, at critical times, found ways to survive more effectively than the other left-handers on the tour – none of whom managed to reach three figures. Wade walked towards Australia’s viewing area to toast his century, applauded by none other than Steve Waugh, who had seen off similar bursts by Curtly Ambrose and company decades before.Matthew Wade and Jofra Archer exchange words during their duel•Getty Images

“I think the new ball was obviously quite difficult for our left-handers at the top of the order, with the way Stuart [Broad] was bowling, scrambled seam as well,” Wade said. “To be honest through the middle – facing Stuart and Jofra, I was quite comfortable facing those two through the whole tour. So I can only speak on what I faced. I obviously hit the ball in slightly different areas to the guys at the top of the order. But no doubt, the guys at the top of the order would love to have scored a lot more runs.”Round the wicket was really, really effective to our left-handers at the top of the order, But personally I felt quite comfortable against those two. I bat on an off stump guard, and feel like if they get outside my body I can leave them. If they come straight, I’ve got to hit it, otherwise I’m in trouble. But we’ve got to get better in all departments. Barring Smithy, nobody really lit it up this tour for us.”Whether or not Wade is still playing Test cricket in two years is very much an open question, but he reckoned that Archer would pose a considerable, if somewhat different, challenge on faster and truer Australian pitches. “I think he’ll be a handful on any pitch he plays on. Traditionally Australia is a little bit easier to play the short ball especially, because of the consistency of the bounce,” he said. “You can get under balls, but in this series you saw a lot of guys ducking into balls, myself included.”The pace of the wickets aren’t the same as what we have, and the consistency in Australia. He’ll be hard work, you’ve gotta bowl probably a touch fuller than what you can bowl sometimes over here with the slowness of the pitches and not as much bounce. But he’s going to be a handful on any pitch that he bowls on over the next couple of years, and Australia will be no different. At least with his bouncer you can trust that you can get underneath it which will be nice, instead of copping it on the body.”Reflecting on the series, Wade defended his verbally active ways, and there were certainly few signs of animosity at the end-of-season party, as both teams mixed freely. “That’s the great thing about Ashes cricket and the way this series was played,” Wade said. “There was no abuse throughout this series – it was hard Test cricket. I know there’s been a lot of stuff reported and written, on the ground it’s just been good, hard cricket. I can only speak for myself, and for the whole team in our dressing room. Once you walk off the ground, all is forgotten.ALSO READ: Why Australia deserved to go home with the Ashes”We don’t really need to jump in and talk about in the media. Whatever happens on the ground stays on the ground, that’s just the way Australian cricket teams play. But I can tell you now it’s been a tame series compared to other series I’ve played in.”Tame, though, did not reflect how consuming the atmosphere of an Ashes series can be. Even Wade, who had spoken at length after his Edgbaston century about the perspective he had found since his previous stint in the national team, admitted that it was easy to get caught up.”It’s been difficult at times. I think you get caught up at times in the whirlwind of Test cricket, and this series and everything that’s reported,” he said. “”It can grind on you pretty quick. I’m lucky to have my family over here, two kids keep you away from the game a lot and keep your mind off the game and they don’t care too much what’s going on at the ground.”But it is important to understand that it is only a game and that everyone is doing their best, and when we walk away in 20 years there won’t be too many people talking about us.”But they will talk, for many years, about Archer and Wade at The Oval, just like they will about Smith, Stokes, Broad, Cummins and the bewitching summer of 2019. Rightly so.

After months of speculation, the first clear details of The Hundred, the ECB’s new 100-ball competition, have been revealed, with each team’s name, logo, and kit launched alongside the announcement of the first five players recruited for each squad. There were no surprises in terms of team names or the destination of England’s Test players, though a handful of the selections in the ‘local icon’ draft were unexpected.ALSO READ: Central contract and local icons drafts explainedThat means that the Leeds team, Northern Superchargers, picked Ben Stokes over Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root, with those two headed to Cardiff (Welsh Fire) and Nottingham (Trent Rockets) respectively. The local icon draft saw most of England’s white-ball contracted men selected by their respective teams, as well as a handful of young county players. Perhaps the most eye-catching was Tom Banton’s £100,000 deal to play for Welsh Fire alongside Glamorgan’s T20 captain Colin Ingram, as revealed by ESPNcricinfo.Dan Lawrence (London Spirit, £60,000) was selected ahead of Ravi Bopara and Dawid Malan, while Pat Brown (Birmingham Phoenix, £60,000) was picked as confirmation that his stock has risen exponentially over the past two seasons.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Arsenal star who made 169 passes was as good as Odegaard vs Sheffield Utd

The sky is blue, the grass is green and Arsenal have scored four or more in a game again.

It was only a couple of months ago that Mikel Arteta's side were in the midst of a goalscoring crisis, with just a single goal coming from 63 shots at one point.

However, in the intervening months, the Gunners have quickly turned into the most lethal team in the country and, after dispatching Sheffield United 6-0 on Monday night, currently possess a goal difference of plus 45 – the best in the league.

It was the sort of performance in which each and every player could leave the pitch with their heads held high, but there were two in particular who deserved to be singled out for praise, the first of which was the captain.

Martin Odegaard's game in numbers

Yes, Martin Odegaard put in what might be one of his best performances of the season at Bramall Lane last night and was justly rewarded with the Man of the Match award.

The mercurial midfielder was involved in practically every aspect of the game, whether through his silky passing, thunderous shots or tireless pressing. He was everywhere, and the Sheffield United players will be having nightmares for weeks.

The Norwegian's brilliance was recognised by the Standard's Simon Collings' who gave his performance a 9/10 on the night, writing that he 'ran the show in midfield' and that the Blades 'couldn't lay a glove' on him.

It's a very complimentary assessment, but one backed up by the numbers, as in Odegaard's 95 minutes of action, he scored a goal, registered 0.21 expected assists, took a mammoth 115 touches, made four key passes, was accurate in both of his attempted long balls, created one big chance and succeeded in all three of his dribbles.

In all, it was about as close to a perfect game as fans will see from their 25-year-old wizard, and while he fully deserves all the praise he's received, there's another starter who deserves just as much credit.

William Saliba's game in numbers

The other player in question is French international and "Rolls-Royce of a defender", as dubbed by The Athletic's Aaron Catterson-Reid, William Saliba.

Now, from looking at the score alone, fans might assume that the 22-year-old had very little to do on the night, and while that might be somewhat true from a defensive point of view, that doesn't mean that he was just sitting in the Arsenal half twiddling his thumbs all game – far from it.

In fact, when looking at his statistics from the match, it becomes quite clear that he was busy throughout, as in his 95 minutes of action, he took 180 touches, was accurate in 169 of his 174 passes, won two of his three duels, lost possession just six times, made one clearance and one interception.

The standout statistics are the number of touches and passes made by the Bondy-born "monster", as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, and while they're impressive in isolation, they are even more remarkable when compared to the historical data.

According to Orbinho, the head of Optajoe, the Frenchman's 169 passes ranks as the most completed by an Arsenal player in Premier League history, surpassing Santi Cazorla, who held the record previously and sitting behind just three Manchester City players for the most passes in a Premier League match ever.

Incredibly, that tally of passes also happened to be more than the entire of the Sheffield United team combined (142) on the night, a stat that truly sums up Arsenal's dominance in Yorkshire.

In all, while it might not look like the former Saint-Étienne man was doing much considering the score, he was very much involved in the game, so Collings' 6/10 rating and assessment that he was 'rarely called upon' doesn't entirely ring true.

Ultimately, Odegaard fully deserves all the praise he received for his unreal performance last night, but Saliba should also get recognition for his contribution with the ball at his feet.

Wolves could have an ideal Neto replacement who’s shining out on loan

Wolverhampton Wanderers find themselves on the cusp of achieving a top-half Premier League finish this season.

Recently, however, Gary O’Neil has had to deal with injuries to his star performers, as Hwang Hee-Chan, Matheus Cunha and Pedro Neto have all missed matches due to injuries.

Wolves boss Gary O'Neil

Neto could miss the rest of the campaign due to a hamstring issue, and with plenty of potential suitors showing interest, could this be his last season at Molineux?

Pedro Neto’s future at Wolves

Against Newcastle United in their recent 3-0 defeat, Neto was taken off due to suffering a second serious hamstring injury of the season, and this could rule him out until 2024/25.

The Portuguese was in fine form too, scoring three times and grabbing 11 assists in all competitions for the Old Gold and the blow came at the wrong time for O’Neil.

According to journalist David Ornstein, clubs such as Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester City are all sniffing around the winger with regard to making a potential move this summer.

It could cost them up to £80m to secure the player, but there is no doubt he is in demand after a fine season in the Midlands.

If Neto does indeed depart, O’Neil may already have a dream successor lined up who is currently starring out on loan.

Fabio Silva's record at Rangers

While Silva may have scored just five goals in 72 appearances for Wolves since joining, his loan spell at Glasgow Rangers looks like it has given him a fresh lease of life.

In 14 appearances for the Light Blues, Silva has scored four times, including important goals against Hibs in the Scottish Cup and Hearts in the league, showcasing his wonderful talents in Govan.

Fabio Silva

Signed in order to give Cyriel Dessers competition for the lone striker role, Silva has thrived when being deployed on the left wing, and this could suggest he is an ideal Neto heir.

Against Benfica in the second leg of their Europa League clash, Silva was the one attacker who looked like he was going to make something happen. The youngster succeeded with three of his six dribble attempts, made one key pass and taking 50 touches during the game.

His performances meant he was called up to the Portugal U21 squad for their matches against the Faroe Islands and Croatia, and he scored the opener against the former on Thursday evening.

This led talent scout Antonio Mango to lavish praise on the youngster, saying that “Rangers got themselves a talent" after bringing the previously struggling Wolves star in on loan.

Life in the Premier League has been tough, but when spending time out on loan, Silva has thrived. Four goals for Rangers follow on from him netting 16 times during spells for PSV Eindhoven and Anderlecht last season, indicating that the ability is clearly there.

You can’t be blindsided or be stubborn enough to not take in good information.”It has been a great learning day for us and hopefully the guys take in the information and learn from that, hopefully pretty quickly. They have to, and they have to play games so in situations like that you have to throw them out in the middle of it, you can’t say your senior players always have to support them and nurture them.”Sam Billings, with 24 T20I caps, was run out by Colin Munro in a moment the Black Caps hailed as a turning point and James Vince fell a short time later, having reached 49 off 39 deliveries. From there only Tom Curran reached double figures with 14 not out as the tourists managed just 166 for 7 chasing 181.”With a lot of wickets in hand you’d expect us to win,” Morgan said. “Certainly we did, we were in control pretty much up until that point. The guys that came in, we didn’t do the simple things right.”We didn’t establish a partnership, we didn’t hit with the wind, things that the Black Caps did throughout. We do have to get better and calmer in those situations and when we’re chasing.”Tom Banton – one of the six England debutants for the series alongside Matt Parkinson, Sam Curran, Saqib Mahmood, Lewis Gregory and Pat Brown – made 18 off 10 in his first international match before he was bowled trying to ramp Blair Tickner in a knock that pleased Morgan.”He’s a free-spirited guy who plays expansive cricket, and we want him to do that,” Morgan said. “He gets out playing one of his strongest shots. We’ll encourage him to keep doing that.”Banton’s fellow opener Dawid Malan was England’s top scorer for the second match running, following his 39 off 29 balls in the second match – which England also lost – with 55 off 34. Malan expressed his disappointment at not being able to build on a strong start in Wellington and Morgan thought he would feel the same after his latest innings in Nelson.”It’s extremely disappointing for him,” Morgan said. “He’s one of the only opening batters that ever talks about seeing the majority of the innings through and being there at the end. It will hurt him.”England must win the penultimate fixture in Napier on Friday to keep the five-match series alive with New Zealand leading 2-1.
