Doom and gloom have encased Manchester United over the last decade or so. Remarkably it has now been over ten years since they last won the Premier League but brighter times lie in wait.

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS at the helm, a rosier picture has been painted. A new Old Trafford could be in store but first and foremost, there is the summer window to navigate.

Where United find themselves next term remains to be seen. They are behind in the race for Champions League football but a dramatic FA Cup quarter-final victory over Liverpool eight days ago has offered supporters renewed hope about Erik ten Hag’s side.

So, how do they go about improving this team? There will be plenty of ways no doubt about it, but bringing through the youth would certainly be a smart idea. We’re talking about you, Kobbie Mainoo.

Man Utd's summer transfer targets

After their defensive positions have been pillaged by injuries this term signing a new central defender should certainly be high on United’s agenda.

Leny Yoro of Lille has been linked while there have been further stories to suggest that Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite might be on the agenda. As we said, more youthful figures appear to be the order of the day at Old Trafford.

That remains the case when considering Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel. A report from Sky Sports back in the middle of February suggested that he was an option for United this forthcoming summer.

They suggest that the Red Devills are ‘keen’ on acquiring the forward who is very much among their options.

A move could be quite a pricey one given Tel’s reputation, although CIES Football Observatory value the 18-year-old at £32m.

Why Mathys Tel is a bigger talent than Kobbie Mainoo

When discussing the great Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo debate several years ago, United legend Rio Ferdinand muttered the following words: “People try and make comparisons about who’s better, just enjoy them man.”

We’re not for one moment saying that Tel and Mainoo are in the same category but we’re going to ignore Rio’s advice for now to justify why the former would be such an exciting signing.

Mainoo has burst onto the scene this term with some aplomb. Before the 2023/24 campaign commenced the midfielder had played just three times for the club with his sole start coming against Charlton Atheltic in the Carabao Cup.

Well, fast forward to the current campaign and our man Mainoo is now an undroppable figure in Ten Hag’s side.

He was first inducted into the team in 2023/24 against Everton in a 3-0 win at Goodison Park and since that moment the teen hasn’t looked back. Mainoo has missed just two league games since that win, starting 11 of the 12 matches from the 0-0 draw with Liverpool onwards.

Such dazzling consistency for one of the world’s biggest clubs has seen the 18-year-old handed his England bow already. Gareth Southgate proclaimed when announcing his squad for the latest fixtures that Mainoo wasn’t ready. However, after seeing him in action in the FA Cup quickly had a change of heart. The youngster was called into the senior side immediately and then came off the bench against Brazil last Saturday.

On the flip side, Tel is yet to make his debut for the France national team. Hardly a surprise given the remarkable amount of talent Didier Deschamps possesses but it surely won’t be too long.

After all, the attacker may well be a bigger talent than Mainoo. Mainly capable of playing off the left wing, the Bayern sensation has been in superb form after bursting onto the scene this season, scoring eight goals and supplying four assists across 33 outings.

Tel’s form has led him to be described as a “ball-striking machine” and an “elite level goal-scorer” by analyst Ben Mattinson, with FBRef’s castle of stats detailing even further why he’s so exciting.

Compared to the likes of Phil Foden, Lamine Yamal and Bukayo Saka by the stats-based platform, among similarly positioned players in Europe’s top five leagues, the Frenchman ranks inside the top 2% for non-penalty goals, assists, touches and successful take-ons. You name it, Tel has it.

Interesting to note is that he’s also ranked ahead of Mainoo in GOAL’s NXGN list for 2024, a renowned award each year which determines the best young talent on the planet.

Melbourne Stars won the season’s first Melbourne derby in comprehensive fashion after their legspinning duo of Sandeep Lamichhane and Adam Zampa prompted a collapse that read 5 for 8 by the time it finished.Coming at 2 for 117, just when Melbourne Renegades had set up for a strong finish and had the well-set Shaun Marsh at the crease, it helped restrict Renegades to 142. Marcus Stoinis made an unbeaten 68 and Glenn Maxwell an unbeaten 40 to see the Stars through with eight wickets in hand and open up a two-point lead at the top of the table with their fifth win in six matches.In second place, Sydney Sixers have eight points in six matches. The loss – their sixth this season – means that defending champions Renegades continue to be the only team without a point on the board.Finch and Marsh see off early troubleSam Harper was certainly adventurous after Stars put Renegades in, but his innings only lasted eight balls as he ended up mistiming a rising delivery from Nathan Coulter-Nile to mid-on in the second over. This brought Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh together and the pair went about the Powerplay without taking too many risks.Dale Steyn and Daniel Worrall tied their respective ends up even as Coulter-Nile had a bad outing, but neither Finch nor Marsh looked particularly perturbed by the relatively sedate scoring rate. Going at just about seven an over in the eighth over, Finch lined up Adam Zampa in his first over and slog-swept him for six to get Renegades past 50. But minutes later, he got too far away from a googly pitched outside off, and Zampa was past his slog sweep to get off stump. The 42-run stand had still brought some stability on a slowish surface though.The spinnersMarsh and Beau Webster managed to move things forward without being particularly belligerent. The odd boundaries were on offer even though the spinners were tight through the middle overs. Lamichhane didn’t have the brightest start to his spell, while at the other end Zampa was stringing the dot balls together efficiently.The pair put on 62 in the seven overs they batted together until a stunning bit of work by Ben Dunk at long-on completely turned the game in the 15th over. Running to his left in chase of a Marsh pull shot against Lamichhane, Dunk jumped to hold on with two hands, managed to take two steps to keep himself on his feet, and managed to hurl a backhand to Coulter-Nile who was converging from deep midwicket just before his third step over the boundary line.Two balls later, Lamichhane got a floaty legbreak to dip and spin past Dan Christian outside off and get his foot marginally off the ground. The touch-and-go stumping call went Stars’ way and suddenly Renegades had lost their two of their most experienced batsmen in three balls.Zampa lured Webster into a cut with a tantalisingly slow ball outside off and beat him next over, only to follow up with a slider that also looked good for the cut. Only it snuck through rapidly and took his middle stump instead. Lamichhane helped himself to another one and Steyn closed things out at 142, which appeared at least 20 below par.A burst and then a trickleStars’ openers made it look at least 40 under par with the way they began the chase. Tom Cooper was handed the first over and Stoinis hit him for three boundaries to start things off. Nic Maddinson started his innings with an elegant square drive against Kane Richardson next over, then followed up with not-so-elegant boundaries off the next two balls. Christian dropped Stoinis at midwicket off Richard Gleeson in the third over, and the seamer’s average season looked to stretch even further as he conceded 13 off his opening over. Stars had raced to 41 in their first three overs.Finch persisted with Renegades’ best bowler this season, Richardson, and in his third over he managed to get Maddinson to slice one up for backward point. The legspin of Boyce then helped slow things down, and a promoted Dunk looked largely uncomfortable and hit no boundaries before finding mid-off with a leading edge off Gleeson.But the drought wouldn’t last. In the 12th over, Glenn Maxwell slapped Gleeson in front of square for the first boundary since the fifth over. He repeated it two balls later, and the momentum was back. By the time he reverse-whipped left-arm spinner Tom Andrews for six at the backward point boundary, the required rate was nearly down at run-a-ball. The last 18 runs were scored without any boundaries, but Stars still won with seven balls to spare.

Despite the rumours, though, Amorim has remained coy on any rumours about his future, denying reports that he has reached an agreement with Liverpool in a recent press conference, saying via Fabrizio Romano:

That said, Liverpool's current reported targets would certainly suit Amorim's 3-4-3 system, with Jeremie Frimpong among those to be linked to the Reds recently. The Leverkusen wing-back has been one of the best in his position this season and has earned plenty of interest as a result. The same can be said for his defensive counterpart.

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool have now joined the race to sign Alejandro Grimaldo alongside Arsenal and Bayern Munich ahead of the summer transfer window.

The left-back has enjoyed an excellent season, more than playing his part in Leverkusen's unbeaten run, and could yet be part of a double Liverpool swoop in the coming months. The Reds may be missing out on Alonso, but they'd more than settle for Leverkusen's wing-backs this summer.

"Incredible" Grimaldo would be perfect for Amorim

Given that Amorim operates with a back-three system with wing-backs, a player like Grimaldo would have no trouble when it comes to slotting straight in, having starred in a similar role under Alonso at Leverkusen. It remains to be seen just how much Leverkusen demand for their full-back, but a player of the Spaniard's ability is never one clubs will want to miss out on, even if Liverpool already have Andy Robertson to call on.

Blowing Robertson out of the water this term, it's no surprise that Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has been so full of praise for Grimaldo. Rolfes told Sky Sports that the left-back is a "simply incredible footballer, technically great and very intelligent," before going on to say: "Part of the reason why we dominate games to the extent we do at the moment is to do with him reading situations very quickly and coming forward to create overloads."

An lbw appeal during a Ranji Trophy match could end up having an impact on India’s tour of New Zealand. Ishant Sharma will be hopeful the MRI scan he takes on Monday evening will not reveal a fracture or a tear, after he twisted his ankle and hobbled off the field during Delhi’s match against Vidarbha at Feroz Shah Kotla. ESPNcricinfo understands he was in considerable pain and his ankle was swollen.Ishant is all but out of the last two days of the match. An ankle injury is serious because it leaves an athlete almost immobile during rehabilitation. However, there is cause for optimism in that Ishant’s first match on the tour of New Zealand – the three-day warm-up game before the first Test – starts on February 14, which gives him nearly three weeks to recover. The first Test begins on February 21. It is estimated that such an injury – should there be no tear or break – takes about two weeks to heal.Ishant suffered the injury on the second afternoon, during his third over of the second innings, after Delhi had fallen behind Vidarbha by 16 runs. It appeared that he twisted his ankle as he turned around to appeal. He was attended to by the Delhi support staff before limping off the park on his own steam, which could be a positive sign. Ishant is scheduled to fly to New Zealand in the first week of February. The fourth seamer in the squad for New Zealand will be Ishant’s opposite number in this match, Umesh Yadav, who took two wickets to help bowl Delhi out for 163.This was going to be Ishant’s last match before he went to New Zealand, with India’s team management monitoring workloads closely. Losing him in this match, though, leaves Delhi with little hope of an outright win on a pitch that is slowing down.Four short of the feat of 100 Tests – only one India fast bowler has managed that – Ishant has enjoyed a late revival over the last three years. He credits it to a recent change in his bowling by which he has been able to pitch the ball fuller without losing any pace. His combination with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami has turned India into a feared fast-bowling unit even in away conditions.”Having a bunch of fast bowlers like this, who can just bowl out any opposition anywhere, is a brilliant thing to have in Indian cricket,” India’s captain Virat Kohli recently said. “[It’s] something that we haven’t quite relied on in the past, but I think them taking the attention away from the spinners in India is a huge statement, so I think that’s what makes us feel that when we travel now, we have it in us to win a series, and not just one-odd Test match here and there. So I think it’s been hard work, persistence, learning the game, thinking about the game that’s got them to where they are and they deserve it fully.”
