Sky Sports: Man Utd want to sign £70m star regardless of who the manager is

Manchester United and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have set their sights on signing a £70m star this summer “regardless of who the manager is”, according to Sky Sports.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Man Utd transfer comments

Ratcliffe and INEOS look set to have a big summer ahead of them, with Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox already brought to Old Trafford as chief executive officer and technical director, with Dan Wilcox still waiting to join from Newcastle United as sporting director.

Whether it be Erik ten Hag in charge or another new manager, the Red Devils playing squad could see some high-profile changes ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, with Raphael Varane set to leave when his contract expires. Another big earner in Casemiro could potentially follow the defender out the exit door.

In regards to incomings, Ratcliffe hinted back in March that superstar signings such as Jude Bellingham or Kylian Mbappe were unlikely under his leadership, instead looking to unearth future stars.

“He’s a great footballer [Bellingham] but it’s not where our focus is. The solution isn’t spending a lot of money on a couple of great players. They’ve done that, if you look at the last 10 years. The first thing we need to do is get the right people in the right boxes, managing and organising the club. We must make sure we get recruitment right, such a vital part of running a football club is getting recruitment right, finding new players.

“I’d rather find the next Mbappe, rather than spend a fortune to buy success. It’s not that clever to buy Mbappe, anybody could figure that one out.”

Even though Ratcliffe said spending a lot of money isn’t the solution, replacing Varane appears to be top of the United agenda heading into the summer window, which could come at a cost.

Sky confirm Man Utd interest in £70m Branthwaite

One player who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months is Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite. Sky Sports News have now provided a new update on Utd and the defender, saying on Wednesday lunchtime:

“News just into us, now Manchester United are interested in signing Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton. United are big admirers of the centre-back, who was recently selected in the England training squad for Euro 2024.

“Recruiting in the heart of the defence has been earmarked as a priority position for the FA Cup winners. Of course, Raphael Varane departed the club following that win and Branthwaite is high among the names to be discussed regardless of who the manager is next season.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

“Branthwaite is thought to be valued in the region of £60m-70m by Everton, who must sell on of their main assets before the end of June to stay in line with PSR. It means Branthwaite may become the more likely player to attract offers before June 30th. He’s also been tracked by Manchester City and Tottenham last season.”

The 21-year-old made 41 appearances for Everton during the 2023/24 season in what was arguably a full breakthrough season since moving to Goodison Park.

Now, it looks as if he could be one of Ratcliffe’s first major signings, although INEOS and co may have to do something they have been cautious to do – splash the cash.

– comentou o arqueiro.

Chelsea hold talks for first Enzo Maresca signing in £2.1m-a-year giant

Chelsea have held talks over signing a potential first signing for incoming new manager Enzo Maresca, with the board already getting prepared to back him.

Maresca reaches agreement to join Chelsea

After guiding Leicester City to Premier League promotion last season, winning the Championship in pole position, it is reliably believed that the former Man City backroom coach is now on the verge of replacing Mauricio Pochettino.

Chelsea may have to sell £25m star who's perfect for Enzo Maresca

The Chelsea star is reportedly up for sale this summer.

ByTom Lever May 28, 2024

Talks have been held and the likes of reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano have reported that Maresca wants to join Chelsea in the next few days. The 44-year-old, an understudy of Pep Guardiola, is also now Chelsea's unanimously preferred managerial candidate behind-the-scenes (Ben Jacobs) – with Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna out of the running and likely to remain at Portman Road (David Ornstein).

With Maresca already green-lighting a move to Stamford Bridge, the only obstacle in Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali's way right now is compensation with Leicester. Chelsea and the Foxes are currently in negotiations over the financial package to release Maresca from his King Power duties and grant the Italian a move to west London.

Journalist Ben Jacobs, sharing detail on why Chelsea opted for Maresca, claimed that co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley were left impressed with the tactician's squad knowledge and viewed him as the standout candidate after conducting interviews.

Enzo Maresca's last five games in charge of Leicester City

Leicester City 0-2 Blackburn

Preston North End 0-3 Leicester City

Leicester City 5-0 Southampton

Leicester City 2-1 West Brom

Plymouth Argyle 1-0 Leicester City

"Chelsea like Maresca's fit with their model and have been really impressed by his squad knowledge," wrote Jacobs on X.

"Both sporting director, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley viewed him as the standout candidate. And the fact he's learned off Pep, obviously another bonus."

It's looking extremely likely that Chelsea finalise the appointment of Maresca soon, as their search for a Pochettino replacement reaches a swift conclusion – coming after they parted company with the Argentine this time last week.

Attention now turns to the transfer market, and how Chelsea will back their prospective new manager. The Blues need a successor for veteran defender Thiago Silva, who waved goodbye to supporters on the final day of the season and has joined Fluminese following the expiry of his Chelsea contract.

Chelsea hold talks with Tosin Adarabioyo over joining

Now, according to inews and journalist Mark Douglas, Silva's heir could well be 6 foot 5 Fulham centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo.

The £2.1 million-per-year giant is free to leave Craven Cottage for nothing on June 30 when his contract expires, and it is believed Chelsea have held talks with Tosin over joining the club on a Bosman deal.

The 26-year-old was a key player under Marco Silva at Fulham over the second half of 2023/24, and could be a pretty astute signing at zero cost if they beat the likes of Newcastle and Man United to his signature.

Ireland's rookies prepare to sink or swim again as England step up intensity

Curtis Campher’s impressive displays show value of trusting youth in arduous campaign

The Preview by Andrew Miller03-Aug-2020

Big pictureIt seems a bit patronising to pick out the positives when a side has been dispatched twice in three days, with 133 balls to spare on the first occasion, and 105 on the second. But when those positives centre around the vastly assured arrival of Ireland’s newest recruit, Curtis Campher, then it’s only reasonable to doff the cap in acknowledgement. It’s early, after all, in one-day cricket’s next four-year cycle – England’s 20 points from two games are the very first entries in the new ICC Super League that will determine qualification for the 2023 World Cup. And given Ireland’s struggles to move on from the golden generation that starred at the 2007 and 2011 events but failed to qualify in 2019, any shoot of recovery for the men in green is to be welcomed, especially one that has already been proven to be quite so sturdy. After a brace of innings-salvaging half-centuries and three golden-armed wickets in his first two ODIs, Campher is currently averaging 127 with the bat and 25.33 with the ball – not bad for a 21-year-old. But for all his all-round prowess, can he possibly make enough of a difference to secure a consolation win against the world champions? All the signs suggest it is unlikely. After all, England themselves have barely pootled along in anything more than third gear so far – both matches featured lapses in the field and stumbles with the bat that more seasoned opponents might have seized upon. And yet Jonny Bairstow’s staggering burst of speed in his record-equalling half-century on Saturday was a reminder of the extraordinary power that this set of cricketers contain in their ranks.Even in the absence of such marquee players as Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Joe Root, England have an enviable depth of free-flowing strokemakers – one of whom, Sam Billings, has seized on his rare opportunity for a starting berth in the 50-over team, having been limited to 10 intermittent outings in the previous four years.Twice in the first two games, Billings was the mid-innings bulwark that his team required to guard against embarrassment, and with the bio-secure summer set to keep the big dogs at arm’s length for a while yet, he’s in the form and frame of mind to make up for the agonies – physical and mental – that he endured in a cruel 2019.Billings’ batting sidekick in the second match was also England’s outstanding bowler of the series so far, and another man with ample incentive not to let the summer of 2019 dominate this team’s narrative forevermore. David Willey was the luckless man to make way for Jofra Archer in England’s final World Cup squad, and after taking some time to lick his wounds, he’s back with a point or seven to prove. You would put Reece Topley in the same bracket, only for another injury setback to rule him out of Tuesday’s game. On the face of it, the third ODI will be a dead-rubber contest in a fallow period of the international cycle. But there’s a hunger to prove some timely points on both sides that will keep the intensity high all the same.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)England WWWLW
Ireland LLLLLIn the spotlightThe peaks of Jason Roy’s ODI career are as high as any England batsman has ever climbed – his 180 against Australia at Melbourne in January 2018 remains a national record, while his opening partnership with Bairstow is already a statistical supernova. But in between whiles, he’s endured a few troughs as well, including his first-over dismissal on Saturday which was the 14th of an ODI career that began (with a first-baller…) immediately after the 2015 World Cup – that is twice as many as the next man on the list, New Zealand’s Martin Guptill, with six. Roy will doubtless carry on going for his strokes from the outset of an innings, safe in the knowledge that England value his lack of inhibition at the top of the order. But he’ll feel he’s due a score nonetheless after a fallow start to his summer, which included another duck for England Lions in last week’s warm-up.Josh Little might not have played in the second ODI had it not been for Barry McCarthy’s injury misfortune in the opening fixture. But his unleashing on the series was the spark that Ireland’s bowling attack desperately needed, as he scalped three prime wickets in a feisty display that culminated in an ICC reprimand for his fruity send-off to Bairstow. That rap on the knuckles notwithstanding, the fire in his belly was plain to see as he bombed out both Eoin Morgan and Moeen Ali for ducks to leave England’s chase looking momentarily forlorn. His left-arm angle and ingrained aggression give a slightly samey seam attack a vital point of difference, and at the age of 20, he’s got time on his side to become an indispensable factor in Ireland’s regeneration.Team newsWith the series secure, it’s possible that England will fiddle their options to give Liam Livingstone an outing in the middle order, though it’s not entirely clear who might make way for him. James Vince hasn’t done terribly in compiling a pair of stereotypically fluent cameos (and besides, his seam bowling surely earned him another outing…), while Tom Banton needs game-time to extract his full potential. It’s not impossible that Morgan himself will take a rain check for this one. With the ball, Topley grew into his first match in four years after a hesitant first over, but a left groin strain will keep him out for the next couple of weeks – which could mean a return for Tom Curran and his death-overs wiles.England: (possible) 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 3 James Vince / Liam Livingstone, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Sam Billings, 6 Tom Banton, 7 Moeen Ali, 8 David Willey, 9 Tom Curran, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Saqib MahmoodWill Porterfield has been a notable absentee for Ireland in the first two games, with the new captain Andy Balbirnie stamping his authority on a team brimful of youth. But, even with top-order runs at a premium, the ex-skipper’s experience may not be sufficient to earn him a recall – Balbirnie hinted that the youth policy was “sink or swim” in the wake of Saturday’s loss. The selectors delayed naming a 14-man squad until the morning of the game, with Mark Adair added to the group after missing the first two ODIs with his ankle still causing him problems on the road back from a long lay-off. Adair was Ireland’s leading wicket-taker in 2019 across formats, and looks likely to play.Ireland: (possible) 1 Paul Stirling, 2 Gareth Delany, 3 Andy Balbirnie (capt), 4 Harry Tector, 5 Kevin O’Brien, 6 Lorcan Tucker (wk), 7 Curtis Campher, 8 Simi Singh/Craig Young, 9 Andy McBrine, 10 Mark Adair, 11 Josh LittlePitch and conditionsThe second match was played on the same pitch as the first, but this third game will take place on a fresh strip, which may persuade Balbirnie to aim for third time lucky with the bat and try to take first use once again. Certainly the weather is set fair, with high cloud and temperatures in the low 20s Celsius, which would imply little atmospheric assistance given the afternoon start.Stats and trivia England’s victory on Saturday was their 10th in 11 completed ODI encounters with Ireland since 2006, with the famous loss at Bangalore in 2011 the only loss. The culmination of England and Ireland’s maiden three-match series means the two sides will have played as many matches in a week as they had contested in the previous four years. Andy Balbirnie needs 72 more runs to reach 2000 in ODIsQuotes”I’m not going to lie, it does feel unnatural at the moment. It’s about giving myself a chance because I know I can catch up. If I’m in for 40, 50 balls, I back myself to catch up. But I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself, it’s the first few times I’ve batted there so I’m not expecting too much.”
Tom Banton is still getting used to the No.4 berth in England’s ODI line-up.“One of us has to go in and get a big score. We’re well aware of that. I can’t speak for Andy or Paul, but I’m not putting any extra pressure on myself to go out tomorrow and try prove people wrong. I’ll just try to play my own game, and if the ball’s there to hit, I’ll try and hit it.”

Chelsea now want to take £163,000-per-week Bayern Munich star off Kompany

Chelsea want to sign a £163,000-per-week star from Bayern Munich this summer, which would be a significant loss for their new manager Vincent Kompany.

Chelsea could sign another defender after Tosin Adarabioyo

The Bavarians and Chelsea could actually do some business together in this next transfer window, with both sides preparing for new eras under different head coaches before the start of next season.

£72 million player really wants to quit Chelsea with Maresca talks imminent

He has his eyes on the Stamford Bridge exit door.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 7, 2024

Chelsea announced Enzo Maresca as their new manager to replace Mauricio Pochettino earlier this week, with the Italian putting pen to paper on a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge, which includes the option of a further year.

The west Londoners want to sign multiple defenders for Maresca, as shared by Fabrizio Romano recently, who also said that Chelsea could be set for a busy summer transfer window.

"It will continue to be a busy summer at Chelsea," said Romano on Chelsea's transfer plans after bringing in Maresca.

"It won’t be completely crazy but they will try to make smart things happen, including a new goalkeeper and I expect them to try for at least one new centre-back, but it could be two. I also expect Chelsea to be busy with the striker position, and I mentioned many times Benjamin Sesko, who is highly rated at Chelsea but also by others like Arsenal and Manchester United."

Chelsea have already sealed a deal for Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer from Fulham, so that is one centre-back on the books and ready to replace the departed Thiago Silva, who re-joined Fluminese on a Bosman deal after leaving west London.

Romano's statement indicates that another centre-back may well arrive after Tosin, and one candidate to come in is Bayern Munich's Dayot Upamecano. The France international, on a rumoured wage of around £163,000 per week, made 33 appearances under Thomas Tuchel last season, and it is unlikely Kompany will let him go easily.

However, Bayern are rumoured to be targeting Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen, so perhaps negotiations involving the Dutchman could help to sweeten any proposed deal.

Chelsea want to take Upamecano away from Bayern Munich

Such is his glowing reputation, Upamecano would be quite the statement capture by Chelsea, and he has plenty of experience on the biggest stages. The 25-year-old has 19 caps for Les Bleus at international level, and reliable Bundesliga journalist Christian Falk has claimed Chelsea would like to sign Upamecano from Bayern this summer.

"Yes, it's true: Chelsea would like Dayot Upamecano," said Falk on the FC Bayern Insider podcast.

"It's not really clear yet whether he'll have a chance next year. Vincent Kompany is looking at everyone, but would Bayern let him go? That would probably cost a lot of money. At the time, Bayern paid €42.5m to RB Leipzig."

France legend Marcel Desailly has previously tipped Upamecano to become one of the best centre-backs in his country, which surely suggests Chelsea would have a quality player on their hands.

ICC likely to approach CSA for clarification on crisis, says legal expert Becker

CSA, meanwhile, is seeking legal advice on whether SASCOC had the authority to intervene in the manner it did

The ICC can be expected to approach CSA for clarification over the board and executive being instructed to step aside by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) on Thursday. That’s the opinion of David Becker, former head of legal for the ICC, who was involved in the drafting of the regulation on outside interference in Member Bodies.Article 2.4 of the ICC’s Constitution states that: “The Member must manage it affairs autonomously and ensure that there is not government (or other public or quasi-public body) interference in its governance, regulation and/or administration of Cricket in its Cricket Playing Country (including in operational matters, in the selection and management of teams, and in the appointment of coaches or support personnel,” and though SASCOC is not a government institution, it is a public body which oversees high-performance sport. ESPNcricinfo understands that the ICC is monitoring the situation, as Becker suggested. While Becker, who now works as a sports lawyer in South Africa, said the ICC would be “cautious” when deciding whether SASCOC’s decision to appoint a task team to conduct an investigation into CSA’s administrative and financial affairs constitutes a breach of its constitution, he pointed to the wording of one of SASCOC’s reasons for stepping in as potentially “worrying” to the game’s global governing body.”As regards to ICC intervention, ICC will certainly be concerned by the reference in SASCOC’s letter to SASCOC having received a ‘directive by the Minister of Sport and Recreation for SASCOC to intervene into the affairs of CSA’,” Becker told ESPNcricinfo. “ICC will be loath to intervene and suspend CSA, but they will be perturbed by it and will certainly actively seek a coherent explanation from CSA. They are required to, as the international governing body.”CSA, meanwhile, is seeking legal advice on whether SASCOC had the authority to intervene in the manner it did, which CSA disagrees with. In an overnight statement CSA said it had not been given the opportunity to engage with SASCOC (although the parties have held two meetings recently) and a spokesperson said the organisation is continuing with “business as usual”, with the board and members’ council set to meet this weekend to chart the way forward. Becker does not believe CSA will be able to prevent SASCOC’s task team from being formed and beginning its work, and explained that SASCOC has acted within its remit.”SASCOC’s powers under its own constitution, and under the National Sports and Recreation Act, are very broad. They have the ability to convene an investigation, and if necessary intervene. We all know urgent action is needed in view of the dire circumstances at CSA,” Becker said.”The question is whether SASCOC have acted prematurely. They have consulted with CSA, but has the task team been appointed? Who is on the task team and is it ready and able to do its work? Still, CSA would be hard-pressed to obtain an interdict from the High Court in response to SASCOC’s actions. Given SASCOC’s broad powers, and the circumstances at CSA, CSA need to be seen to be co-operative here.”CSA has been embroiled in a governance crisis since December last year, when former CEO Thabang Moroe was suspended. Moroe was dismissed last month after a forensic audit revealed acts of serious misconduct but the audit has not been made fully available to SASCOC, the sports ministry or the public, forcing SASCOC to use its step-in rights to look into CSA.
