McCullum: Difficult to balance side without 'world class' Andre Russell

“In hindsight when we got a 165 on the board, it would have been nice to have another bowler,” admits KKR head coach

McCullum on Morgan’s form: I’m confident that he will come right

Kolkata Knight Riders are having a difficult time balancing their side in the absence of the injured Andre Russell, head coach Brendon McCullum admitted after they were beaten by Punjab Kings on Friday. Knight Riders have looked the most well-tuned side since the IPL has resumed, particularly in the early phases when they played Russell as a designated fifth bowler. But the clarity of roles in that XI has suffered since Russell’s hamstring injury against Chennai Super Kings, and Lockie Ferguson’s against Delhi Capitals earlier this week has meant some forced decisions.Related

Mumbai back in familiar territory as Capitals eye top-two finish

Against Kings, the decision was to bolster the batting with Tim Seifert in place of Ferguson, which exposed Venkatesh Iyer to a specialist bowling role that didn’t come off. Between Iyer and Nitish Rana, 3.3 overs of the fifth bowler’s quota went for 37 as Kings sealed a win in the last over.”In terms of the balance, when you take out a world class allrounder like Russell, it’s always difficult to balance your side,” McCullum said. “I know we got home in Sharjah the other day, we just felt a batter short and in that circumstance we felt that we could play the extra batter. We felt that we could utilise the bowling of both Venkatesh Iyer, who’s been so superb for us, and also Nitish Rana who’s a very cagey bowler. When you take one of your big players who happens to be an allrounder out, you’re always going to get the delicate balance of going either bowling strong or batting strong.”In hindsight when we got a 165 on the board, it would have been nice to have another bowler. But not [to be] on this occasion. I still felt like we had a chance in the game, I really did. I think with two overs to go, Punjab Kings were exactly the same score that we were on in our innings. So it was touch and go, small margins in this game and today it didn’t go our way.”Among the overseas options that Knight Riders have are allrounders Ben Cutting and Shakib Al Hasan. Tim Southee, who originally filled in for Russell, took Ferguson’s spot on Friday to effectively cut it down to four frontline bowling options. McCullum said that Shakib had been in contention, but indicated that Seifert’s batting form in the recently-concluded Caribbean Premier League had been tough to ignore. Seifert batted No. 7 on his Knight Riders debut and faced four balls, but the plan, McCullum said, had been to bat him higher.Watch the IPL on ESPN+

“Yeah Shakib’s certainly available,” McCullum said. “We’ve got a lot of squad options. You make calls when you’re a coach, which you sort of go on gut feel at times. Tim Seifert has been exceptional in the Caribbean where he’s been playing for TKR. He did really well in the middle order and we just felt like we needed to strengthen that middle order a little bit.”Because we got off to a good start, we shuffled Tim down a little bit in behind Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik. But yeah, look, Shakib’s always in the mix when you talk selection because his skillset, his ability to bowl left-arm orthodox and also his batting – we probably see him a bit more in the top three as a batter, but that certainly doesn’t mean he can’t slot in somewhere else. So he’ll be in the mix for the next game for sure.”Another one of Knight Riders’ concerns at the moment is captain Eoin Morgan’s form, although it hasn’t seriously affected their batting so far. Morgan is yet to get into double-figures in four innings at the UAE, but has been effective in his leadership role. After the loss against Super Kings, team mentor David Hussey had hinted that Morgan’s spot wasn’t under pressure; McCullum was more direct in stating that.”He’s one of our senior players, he’s one of our international batsmen, and he’s captain as well,” he said. “In his own head, he’d loved to have contributed more runs. I actually think he’s captained the side really really well, tactically. But look, you want some more runs from him, there’s no doubt you need runs from your overseas players. Particularly in those key spots as well. But I’m confident that he’ll come right.”Despite their loss, Knight Riders ended the matchday in fourth place thanks to a healthy net run-rate. They have, however, opened the doors for Mumbai Indians to take that spot with a two-point lead with a win against Delhi Capitals on Saturday.

Liverpool eye "intelligent" £67m star who could be better than Szoboszlai

Potentially completing their midfield once and for all, Liverpool have reportedly joined the race to sign a Barcelona gem who they believe has the ability to compete and reinforce rotation against Dominik Szoboszlai.

Liverpool transfer news

With just one defeat in 12 games, Arne Slot couldn’t have asked for a much better start to life at Anfield, which continued in Sussex as his Liverpool side battled past a resilient Brighton & Hove Albion to advance into the last 16 of the Carabao Cup. As Cody Gakpo starred once again in cup action, the Reds flexed the strength of their squad depth to secure yet another victory.

Whilst Liverpool once again impressed, however, it was another subdued performance from Szoboszlai who has found himself in a constant battle against Curtis Jones for a place in Slot’s side as of late – a battle that he’s in danger of losing.

Against Brighton, the Hungarian played a more advanced role and managed to win just one of three duels and missed two big chances in a frustrating display which once again leaves the door open to rotation or a potential replacement to arrive.

Liverpool and Slot eyeing new move for 26 y/o Serie A star who Klopp wanted

The Reds could finally get their man…

ByTom Cunningham Oct 31, 2024

According to reports in Spain, Liverpool are now racing to sign Fermin Lopez from Barcelona, who value their midfielder at a hefty €80m (£67m) amid interest from Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain alongside the Reds. Just 21 years old, Liverpool reportedly believe that Lopez can complement Szoboszlai and reinforce rotation in their midfield, perhaps costing the Hungarian his place at Anfield.

A graduate from the famous La Masia academy, Lopez won’t come cheap but may well prove to be the missing piece at the heart of Slot’s side should Liverpool decide to splash the cash next year.

"Intelligent" Lopez would hand Slot a Szoboszlai headache

If Jones is currently pushing Szoboszlai all the way at Anfield then Lopez may just take his place entirely if he arrives. The Barcelona gem was brought up through the La Masia academy and, therefore, moulded into a controller at the heart of their midfield in classic fashion.

A style of player that, of course, should ease straight in at the Nou Camp, Lopez would also suit the calmer, more efficient approach that Slot takes at Liverpool, especially on the defensive front next to Ryan Gravenberch.

Given how Slot plays a 4-2-3-1 system too, Lopez’s arrival to sit alongside Gravenberch in the pivot at the base of Liverpool’s midfield would also allow Alexis Mac Allister to advance into his best role in the number 10. On paper, one arrival could take the Reds’ midfield to another level entirely.

Described as “intelligent” by Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig, Lopez is undoubtedly one to watch whether he stays at Barcelona or opts to join Liverpool, Arsenal or PSG in 2025.

Pakistan, West Indies look to tune up ahead of Women's World Cup Qualifiers

Designated captain Javeria Khan, senior player Nida Dar unavailable for series opener

Javeria Khan (L) will miss the series opener against West Indies•PCB

Designated captain Javeria Khan, pacer Diana Baig and spin-bowling allrounder Nida Dar has been ruled out of Pakistan’s first ODI against West Indies scheduled for Monday, hindering their preparations ahead of the 2022 ODI World Cup global Qualifier slated to take place in Zimbabwe from November 21.In Javeria’s absence, Sidra Nawaz has been named stand-in captain for the opening ODI of the three-match bilateral series which will be held in its entirety at the National Stadium in Karachi. Pakistan head coach David Hemp put Javeria and Baig’s unavailability down to fitness concerns, saying the duo are not “not quite right” yet though they, along with top-order batter Omaima Sohail “came out of isolation a couple of days ago” after a Covid-19 outbreak in their original 18-member squad forced six players into isolation.According to Hemp, all three players trained with the extended squad on Sunday morning. While Sohail was named in the 12-member squad for Monday’s fixture, Javeria and Baig will miss out along with Dar, who exited the bubble a few days ago following her father’s passing.”As you are aware, we have been hampered by a Covid outbreak cumulatively in our camp from October 22,” Hemp said on Sunday during a virtual press conference. “We still have three players that will return to us over the next three to four days. Today (Sunday) we got three players back into the group, so we now have an extended group but we’re still three players short. We are also short of Nida Dar. Our condolences go to Nida and her family. Unfortunately, her father passed away a few days ago.”Fixtures (All matches start at 10am local time)

1st ODI: November 8 at National Stadium

2nd ODI November 11 at National Stadium

3rd ODI: November 14 at National Stadium

Despite the trio’s absence, and the unavailability of Bismah Maroof, who is on maternity leave, Hemp, who was appointed Pakistan’s coach in October 2020, backed the home team to come good against West Indies. This series will be his first home assignment.”We have Sidra Amin, Iram Javed, Ayesha Zafar and Aliya Riaz,” he said. “In the top six, we have players that are capable and performing. This [series] is a great opportunity for them.”

West Indies beat Pakistan 3-2 the last time the two teams squared off in a bilateral ODI series in the Caribbean in July-July. Pakistan won the last two matches of that series. Hemp hopes several members of Pakistan’s batting department will look to build on their performances from the Caribbean tour.”Muneeba, she got herself in most of those innings [in West Indies],” he said. “She was disappointed not to go on and get to 60, 70 or even a hundred. Omaima did manage to get through the 30-run mark and a couple of 60s. There has been some progress there.”Stafanie Taylor missed the previous tour to Pakistan in 2019 due to security concerns•IDI via Getty Images

The series – Pakistan’s first home assignment since November 2019 – also marks the return of captain Stafanie Taylor to the West Indies side. She had missed the T20I series against South Africa in Antigua in August-September after being identified as a primary contact of a Covid-19 case in Jamaica, which required her to serve a period of isolation. Now she returns to tour Pakistan after having opted out of the previous tour to the country February 2019 due to security concerns.”It was really disappointing not being in the last ODI series [against South Africa]. I had to take some personal leave of absence,” she said on the even of the series opener. “But I’m back and it’s really good to be back. In Pakistan it’s my first time being here and it’s been good so far.”It seems obvious that we struggled against South Africa. We had some time to go back and reflect on things that we needed to improve our game,” she said. “We were fortunate enough to have a few weeks’ camp in Antigua to rectify some of those errors. So yeah, hopefully, you know, starting tomorrow (Monday), something new.”We are using these games to get the preparation going for the qualifiers, but not looking too far ahead. We definitely want to take away winnings, of course. So not just this practice, but also for us personally, to get some runs and wickets under our belt, and I think looking at not just the qualifiers but also for [the] World Cup [proper next year]. You never know, probably Pakistan again. So, it’s good preparation for us moving forward.”Women’s cricket is set to return to the National Stadium after 15 years•Getty Images

The series also marks the return of international women’s cricket to the National Stadium nearly 16 years after Pakistan last played at the venue in January 2006. Back then, Karachi hosted the Asia Cup during which the home team, India, and Sri Lanka played at Karachi Gymkhana and National Stadium.Spectators up to 50% capacity will be allowed for each of the three matches, though only those with invites – strictly colleges and schools – can attend the first two games. The ground will be open to the general public for the third fixture.West Indies served a three-day quarantine upon landing in Karachi on November 1 and had their first training session on November 5. After the series, which ends on November 14, both teams will travel to Zimbabwe where they will be among the 10 teams vying to secure one of three places for the World Cup to be played in New Zealand in March-April next year.Pakistan squad for first ODI: Aliya Riaz, Sidra Nawaz (captain and wicketkeeper), Anam Amin, Ayesha Zafar, Fatima Sana, Iram Javed, Kainat Imtiaz, Muneeba Ali, Nashra Sandhu, Omaima Sohail, Sadia Iqbal, Sidra AminWest Indies squad for Pakistan tour and World Cup Qualifier: Stafanie Taylor (capt), Anisa Mohammed (vice-capt), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shemaine Campbelle (wk), Shamilia Connell, Deandra Dottin, Sheneta Grimmond, Chinelle Henry, Qiana Joseph, Kycia Knight, Kyshona Knight, Hayley Matthews, Chedean Nation, Shakera Selman, Rashada Williams; Reserves: Cherry Ann Fraser, Shabika Gajnabi, Karishma Ramharack

Everton loanee became "one of the best" & worth £34m after leaving Goodison

Everton have long been praised for their production line, but not all who cut their teeth on the blue ground of Merseyside actually made it onto the Goodison Park pitch.

Leaving before their time, such stars that you will see below went on to forge impressive careers but ultimately recognised their talents away from Everton territory.

The best Everton talents who never played in the PL

Starting off this obscure blast from the past, we have Shkodran Mustafi, who played for Everton during his formative years and featured off the bench against BATE Borisov in 2009/20 – his first season as a professional. And that was all she wrote.

Mustafi cuts an infamous figure on the Premier League scene after several up-and-down years with Arsenal, who he played for 151 times but left having been branded a “horrendous” signing by journalist Charles Watts, even though he won two FA Cups.

Perhaps he wouldn’t have been all that for the Blues, though Arsenal signed the German from Valencia in a deal worth £35m. Thus, there was money to be made.

More presently, Everton must rue the sale of Antonee Robinson, who is thriving for Fulham, hailed as “one of the best left-backs in the world” by Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley. Given that Robinson left for just £2m in 2019, this must rankle some.

Another oft-forgotten one-timer is Eric Dier, who might have made the club a pretty penny had he stayed on the books way back when.

Everton let Eric Dier get away

Dier has enjoyed a comparatively successful career, having been a mainstay at Tottenham Hotspur for the most part of a decade before heading to Bayern Munich last year, where he resides still.

Eric-Dier-Spurs-Bayern

Last term, the 30-year-old England international was hailed by journalist Henry Winter for “intervening calmly, defending resolutely and ensuring a clean sheet” after defeating Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Dier has been around the block and back again, but Everton sure must rue the fact that he never once plied his craft for the Toffees’ first team, despite cutting his teeth at the club, during an 18-month spell on loan at Finch Farm.

In 2011, Dier, who was a teenager fluent in Portuguese, returned to his homeland from Sporting Lisbon on a temporary basis for an initial six-month period, before extending that stint for a further year.

He notably captained the club’s U18s amid that promising spell, but returned to Portugal at the end of the 2012/13 campaign, albeit with Alan Stubbs subsequently revealing that David Moyes and co had targeted a permanent deal, only to be put off by his £1m price tag…

The Merseysiders must really regret not managing to ensnare him for good, for his value, as per Transfermarkt, rose to a peak of £34m after leaving. There was money to be made with this one.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Moreover, former Tottenham boss Antonio Conte even tipped Dier to become “one of the best” central defenders in the world, a further illustration of the quality that was carried within.

It’s a frustrating one, to be sure.

'Immensely proud' Dean Elgar lauds South Africa's character in 'tough conditions'

“It’s something I think we lacked in the previous game, and I think we ticked those boxes pretty well towards the end of today.”

Annesha Ghosh06-Jan-20222:31

Cullinan: ‘This is welcome news for everyone who follows South Africa’

South Africa captain Dean Elgar has heaped praise on his side for their dogged fightback in the Wanderers Tests against India, as they levelled the series 1-1 with a seven-wicket win in the second match in “tough” conditions. He singled out his bowling attack for skittling out the opposition’s 10 wickets in each innings, limiting India to just 202 and 266.”I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way of winning a game of cricket. But I think the one thing that doesn’t go away is basic fundamentals of playing the game, basics of bowling, basics of batting,” Elgar told the host broadcaster in the post-match interview. “It’s something I think we lacked in the previous game, and I think we ticked those boxes pretty well towards the end of today.”The message I sent out to the guys I, ‘Let’s focus on the second game. Let’s get a win. Let’s go one-all, and we go to Cape Town, where we’ve got a very good record as well. Saying that, it wasn’t easy. It was some tough conditions that we had to face as a batting unit. There were times when the Indian batters were on top of us and as bowlers we had to obviously pull it back, and massive respect has to go to our bowling unit. They showed a lot of character. Again, to get 20 wickets in a Test is a great feat.”Related

Elgar's unbeaten 96 seals Johannesburg Test for South Africa

Adjudged Player of the Match for his unbeaten, second-innings 96 in the opening position, Elgar, who strung four 40-plus partnerships across the final session on day three and the best part of the fourth day in South Africa’s 240 chase, played down the multiple blows he copped on his body from the Indian pace attack.”It’s always a privilege to represent your country,” Elgar said. “I’d like to think those knocks that I take make me extra motivated to go out there and perform. Some would call it stupid, some would call a brave but I’m immensely proud of playing for the Proteas.”It doesn’t matter what I go through. I know there’s always a bigger picture, and the bigger picture is for us to win and obviously play a good brand of cricket and that’s something I’d want to instill into our young group. I want to show the guys that it’s okay to take a few blows because when you when you perform like that over four days, it’s so worth it. So yeah, it doesn’t just speak for me; it speaks for everyone within our squad.”One of his stands, worth 82 for the third wicket, had Rassie van der Dussen as the aggressor. Dussen, the right-hander in the left-right combination, struck a 92-ball 40, helping take the hosts past the 150 mark early on the penultimate day. Elgar, who added 27 to that partnership, commended his partner’s effort.”I am glad for Rassie,” Elgar said. “I know he’s been through a bit of a tough time. I think that 40 that he scored is going to go a long way for his career. I don’t think he realises that just now but those kind of moments builds character, builds personnel within your set-up and I just think from a character point of view, he’s gonna learn a hell of a lot.”Elgar also stressed the win, South Africa’s first against India in a Test at Wanderers and the hosts’ third-highest fourth-innings chase, signalled a step in the right direction towards getting long-desired stability in the team’s batting make-up.”Again, a lot of testament goes to our batters,” he said. “We we’ve been struggling a little bit over the past few seasons to get a stable batting line-up, retirements and that has happened and we had to fulfill those roles and we’ve had to be very patient. We’ve obviously entrusted those positions with guys that we feel can fulfill those roles and yeah, it was great to see and pull it off in the second innings under not easy conditions. Let’s put it that way. I think it speaks volumes for us.”
