Tel publicly rejected a move to Tottenham, which will surely put him in good stead with the Arsenal faithful already, and Man United aren’t having much luck in persuading the 19-year-old either – with a move to both of those sides apparently off the table.

Arsenal have contacted Bayern over a deal for Tel in recent days, and they’ve also held talks with the player’s camp, as reiterated by Fabrizio Romano. There remains a concrete chance he could leave the Allianz Arena in the final hours, so this appears to be one of the more high-profile stories to watch.

Sky Sports reporter Gary Cotterill, speaking earlier this morning, also says that Tel is a top deadline day target for Arsenal – along with a certain Ollie Watkins.

“We know that those looking at the market are looking short-term, medium-term, long-term for anyone that can improve the squad,” said Cotterill via Sky’s live blog.

“There have been all kinds of strikers linked this January. Top of the list as we go into Deadline Day are Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins and Mathys Tel.

“The difficulty with Watkins is Villa don’t want him to go, even though the player might be keen. With Tel, it’s different. The player himself doesn’t seem keen to leave Bayern Munich on a permanent deal or on a loan with an obligation, even though the club seem happy for him to leave.”

However, according to Football Transfers, a move for Tel is certain to breakdown due to Bayern’s financial demands – with Vincent Kompany’s side clear they want either a permanent sale or a loan with the obligation to buy.

As a result, Arsenal could make a deadline day bid for Watkins instead, despite having a £60 million offer rejected earlier in the window.

Given Unai Emery has already lost Jhon Duran in a mega-money move to Al-Nassr, it is arguably very unlikely that Villa will sanction a sale at this stage, even if their deals for Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio seriously strengthen their forward options.

The £130,000-per-week Watkins, called an “underrated” striker by Leon Osman, boasts 11 goals and nine assists from 33 appearances in all competitions already. An attacker of his calibre won’t be easy to replace, so it could take an absolutely mammoth offer from Arsenal to even get Villa thinking.

On the player’s side, he probably won’t need too much thinking, as the 29-year-old is known to be a boyhood Arsenal supporter.

Henry Hunt marked himself out as one of rising stars in Australian batting with 610 runs at 42.92 including three centuries last season, which he followed with another hundred for Australia A in Sri Lanka. It won’t be too long before the Test sides needs at least one new opener and another strong summer should keep Hunt firmly in the frame. Two years after his Shield debut, Daniel Drew earned another opportunity and marked it with a maiden century against Victoria. Liam Scott continues to have the makings of a promising allrounder: the batting is yet to kick on, but he took 13 wickets at 20.15 last season.Australia radar
Travis Head and Alex Carey should be available until at least mid-November which will add significant strength to the batting line-up. However, both will be in India when the competition resumes in February, unless Head’s poor returns in Sri Lanka cost him a spot but falling out of the squad entirely seems unlikely. Head averaged 44.00 in his six matches last season, but Carey only managed 19.88 in his six appearances. South Australia are unlikely to have anyone else pushing for international contention unless a batting-injury crisis strikes and brings Hunt further into the equation or Nathan McAndrew is elevated further from Australia A.

Although the winter transfer window has only just ended, the Blues have already started to work on their summer transfer business, with Enzo Maresca planning to make additions in a number of different positions.

According to a report from CaughtOffside, the Blues have been alerted to the availability of young Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg, who has now been cleared to leave the Black Cats for £25m in the summer.

However, given that Rigg is regarded as one of the top young prospects in England, there may be stiff competition for his signature, with the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United also being named as potential suitors.

Sunderland are now resigned to losing the midfielder, despite previously being unwilling to sell him, with the Championship side looking to cash in for a big fee.

Rigg could be a future star

Although he is just 17 years old, the teenager has already made 54 first-team appearances for Sunderland, including 27 in the Championship this season, aiding his side’s promotion push by chiming in with four goals and one assist.

Former Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray has also previously lauded the youngster, saying: “He knows where the goal is and wants to run forward, he’s got energy to burn and can keep running all day.

“Rigg is doing really well and is a real positive for our football club. I’m eulogising about him there, we shouldn’t overly build him up. He’s still a young boy but he has wonderful qualities and wonderful attributes.”

£25m is a large fee for such a young player, but the Sunderland ace’s emergence as a first-team player at such a young age indicates he is destined for great things.

As such, Chelsea should make an approach to sign Rigg this summer, but it may be difficult to win the race for his signature if they don’t secure Champions League football amid the fierce competition for the European places this term.

“When you look at someone like Roston Chase, his record in Test cricket has been pretty good. Although he did lose some form, he played a few games against Zimbabwe this year. CWI considering an interim coachAdams is hoping that the CWI will have some clarity by the end of this week on whether they will be appointing an interim coach for West Indies’ men’s senior team or multiple coaches for different formats, adding that “those discussions are actually ongoing.”The Australia tour will be Simmons’ last assignment as head coach of West Indies. After West Indies suffered an “unfathomable” first-round exit in the T20 World Cup in the country earlier this month, he had put in his resignation. West Indies’ important assignment next year commences with an all-format tour of South Africa, beginning on February 28 and concluding on March 28.”There are two issues to look at,” Adams said. “Obviously, given the schedule that we have, which is Test cricket in Zimbabwe and South Africa from the end of January right through until (March)…I think the white-ball games against South Africa will go into March. Do we first of all split the roles and how long are we going to give ourselves the time in which to recruit? By that I mean, is it that we are going to do an interim situation maybe until the end of the South Africa (tour) or do we actually start recruiting right away (for a full-time coach).”These are decisions that are before us now and I am hoping that by the end of this week coming that we will have some firm decisions to sort of guide the way forward…these are all the questions being considered right now as we speak.”

Saints face uphill battle to avoid relegation

In truth, there is a very good chance the Saints will be playing Championship football once again next season, having won just two league games all season, with Ivan Juric’s side still sitting bottom of the Premier League table.

As such, Southampton fans may already be mentally preparing for life in the second tier, but club chiefs are continuing to identify potential targets for the summer, although the calibre of players they are able to bring in will depend on what division they are in.

According to a report from SportBILD, one player the Saints have in mind is Hertha BSC forward Ibrahim Maza, who is a subject of interest for seven Premier League clubs.

AC Milan and FC Porto also made approaches to sign Maza this winter, but Hertha knocked back the offers, having been keen to receive over €20m (£16.7m) for his services.

That asking price is set to drop in the summer, however, as a special clause in the Algerian’s contract means the figure will have to be halved, indicating he could be available for around £8.3m.

Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg has previously lauded the forward as a “rising star”, and he is enjoying a real breakthrough season in Germany, picking up seven goals and four assists in 24 appearances in all competitions.

The young number 10 has also received praise from freelance scout Ben Mattinson, who likened his deceptive strength to that of Gabriel Carvalho and Ethan Nwaneri.

Although he is yet to prove himself in a major league, with Hertha currently in the Bundesliga II, Maza clearly has a lot of potential, and he could be a fantastic acquisition for the Saints.

The only issue is Southampton will find it very difficult to win the race for the starlet’s signature if they are relegated from the top flight, given the level of interest, although the recent 2-1 win at Ipswich Town gives them a glimmer of hope in the relegation battle.
