England’s upcoming European Championship qualifiers against Bulgaria and Kosovo could present a chance for some squad players to get the opportunity to impress.

One area of the squad Gareth Southgate looks to be experimenting with is central defence, with Harry Maguire the only centre-back called up with more than ten caps to his name.

Joe Gomez and Michael Keane have featured under the England manager before but for Tyrone Mings it is the first occasion he will get to impress Southgate first-hand, as this is his first-ever call-up.

For Everton’s Keane it is a brilliant opportunity to stake a claim in Southgate’s team and ensure he becomes a permanent fixture in the squad moving forward.

The 26-year-old has seven caps so far, the last of which came against Montenegro earlier this year, and with usual regular John Stones missing from the squad there is a spot which needs filling alongside Maguire.

In the five competitive matches he has played for England since coming back into the set-up under Southgate, Keane has been on the winning side on every occasion, and his form has also been impressive in the Premier League.

He has contributed to two clean sheets in four league games for the Toffees this term, and in his last ten games in the Premier League in 2018/19 he reduced the opposition to just six goals, despite playing Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea.

Therefore, he has earned his call-up on merit and is more than capable of dealing with the threat posed by striker Ivelin Popov. The former Burnley player is a good physical presence, as evidenced by his average of 18 duels won per match this season, so he will likely keep the Bulgaria skipper quiet.

Players like Keane need experience if they are to become an international regular, and with England in a commanding position in Group A this is an ideal opportunity to bed-in players with a small number of caps – Southgate’s squad suggests he thinks the same.

There are six competitive matches remaining until Euro 2020, and the Everton defender now has the perfect opportunity to try and cement his starting XI spot alongside Maguire.

One of Manchester United’s flag-bearers for the current youth revolution Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is trying to implement, Scott McTominay has really established himself as a key member of the first-team squad at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a break-through year under Jose Mourinho in the 2017/2018 campaign, registering 27 appearances across all competitions for the club.

Under Solskjaer, things have been no different, with McTominay playing in every single one of United’s opening four Premier League games this season.

The midfielder has already made ten appearances at international level for Scotland, but his last outing for the side on Friday night certainly won’t go down as one of the better ones.

Steve Clarke’s men slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Russia, and Scotland fans took to Twitter to criticise McTominay’s role in the game.

Many supporters questioned how the 22-year-old had managed to “hoodwink” everyone into becoming a starter for both United and Scotland.

Some fans even compared McTominay and ex-Red Devil Darren Fletcher, and insisted the former shares a similar quality of not really offering anything.

Some Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to react after they found out that Henrikh Mkhitaryan had scored twice for Armenia in their European Championship qualifier against Bosnia.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United attacker was playing his second game of football since leaving the Gunners to join Serie A side Roma on loan, and shone with a Man of the Match display.

The Emirates faithful didn’t really see the best of the 30-year-old during his year-and-a-half long stay in north London, hence the decision to ship him out on loan.

One fan below said it was a shame that the supporters never got to see this type of Mkhitaryan, whilst another said that he hopes the attacker can carry this form on in Italy, presumably so the Gunners can offload him permanently come the end of the season.

Some Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to react after Eddie Nketiah scored yet another goal for Leeds.

The 20-year-old striker joined Marcelo Bielsa’s side on a season-long loan from Arsenal this summer, and has taken to life under the Argentine like a duck to water.

Having previously netted three goals in just five appearances before Sunday’s trip to Barnsley, the Gunners academy graduate came off the bench to score the opening goal of the game with just six minutes left on the clock, taking his tally to four goals in six Leeds appearances.

Nketiah also won a penalty which Mateusz Klich converted in the 89th-minute to help secure the three points for Bielsa’s men, and some Arsenal fans wasted no time in jumping onto Twitter to respond to their loan star’s latest strike.

The sight of Sadio Mane being hauled off at Stamford Bridge after N’Golo Kante’s goal may have caused concern for Liverpool fans, but there could be good news regarding his situation.

What’s the latest?

Mane had been struggling in the time leading up to his substitution due to what his manager confirmed was a dead leg, and despite impacting him significantly to warrant coming off, his injury may not be as bad as first feared.

Klopp told LiverpoolFC.com that the decision to take him off was a precaution after realising he wasn’t able to perform to his normal physical capacity, but also acknowledged that it was a problematic injury to incur.

“It was a knock on the bone, around the knee, and a dead leg – that’s an awful combination.”

As a result, the forward will likely be watched closely over the coming days to assess his situation and how he is overcoming the injury, and it is likely he will sit out the trip to MK Dons in order to allow himself time to heal.

A chance for others?

The Carabao cup clash with the League One side would likely have seen Klopp make significant changes to his team regardless of Mane’s injury, but it gives him extra reason to leave the Senegal international out of the side, as well as other key players in the team.

That means there is a great likelihood of a fringe player getting his chance, or perhaps even a young player like summer signing Harvey Elliott or Rhian Brewster, both of whom have impressed academy manager Neil Critchley already this season.

Divock Origi is also unavailable, and if Liverpool are without the pair for the foreseeable future it is a brilliant opportunity for young players to get game time, or for the frustrated Xherdan Shaqiri to prove he is worthy of starting regularly in the team.

Considering it is only a dead leg Mane should be back in action soon, with Liverpool facing some tough fixtures after the visit to Sheffield United, including trips to Manchester United and Tottenham.
