Pundit rubbishes talk of Van de Beek loan exit

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Carlton Palmer has rubbished reports suggesting that Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek could leave Old Trafford on loan in January.

Van de Beek has been out of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side for the vast majority of the season despite a much-heralded arrival in a £40m deal from Ajax last summer.

The 23-year-old has had to endure a stop-start campaign to life at Old Trafford, having started just two of United’s 21 Premier League games this season, with just one goal and an assist in 23 appearances across all competitions.

The Dutchman was reportedly subject to loan enquiries from unnamed clubs but the Red Devils turned those down and opted to ensure that Van de Beek will spend the rest of the season at the Theatre of Dreams.

Inter Milan are one such potential suitor who have previously considered a loan move for the Dutch international but Palmer dismissed the recent claims and believes he will have to be patient.

He told FFC:

“He needs to be playing but I can’t see United letting him out on loan, not in the position they’re in. They’re going for the league title, they’re going for the FA Cup, he’s got to bide his time, the team is playing well now.

“His time will come. It’s simple, they’re going to need the players over the course of this season, so he’s just got to bide his time.

“If he’s a top player, he will get in the team, but the way they’re playing at the moment, he’s just got to be patient.”

With Inter Milan among the interested parties, there are still questions over whether they would be able to afford his colossal wages as Van de Beek, who is valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, currently earns more than the likes of Ashley Young and Milan Skriniar.

Indeed, according to reports, the Dutchman currently earns around £120,000-per-week at Old Trafford. However, if Inter are serious about their title ambitions, signing a player of Van de Beek’s calibre would be a step in the right direction.

But to all intents and purposes, it seems the Red Devils are reluctant to sanction such a move, particularly as a lack of depth has cost Solskjaer’s side in the past.

Most importantly, however, it appears that Van de Beek doesn’t seem to be too keen on a potential move himself. Therefore, it’s hard to imagine a move being completed before the transfer window closes tomorrow.

Finn Azaz could be West Brom’s Pereira heir

West Brom have a rather talented academy system having earned elite category one status nearly a decade ago.

Over the years, plenty of names have made their senior debuts, namely Nathan Ferguson, Kyle Edwards, Rekeem Harper and Dara O’Shea in recent seasons.

Soon another emerging Baggies hopeful could join the long list of players to make it from the youth set-up to the senior fold – Finn Azaz.

The 20-year-old midfield starlet has continued to impress during a loan spell at League Two outfit Cheltenham Town this season and he’s starting to develop as a potential long-term heir in a key position.

At 6 foot 1 inches in stature, the young gem doesn’t appear to be the most mobile option in the engine room. However, that’s far from the case as he not only displayed a creative side this term but shown an ability to dazzle with the ball at his feet.

Indeed, according to GloucesterLive journalist Jonathan Palmer, Azaz has been operating as a ‘no.10’ for the high-flying Robins.

Speaking to the Express & Star, he said:

“Finn Azaz is operating in a ‘number 10’ role supporting two centre forwards and has excelled so far,” before adding: “He has plenty of tricks and flicks in his locker but has already shown progress regarding when to try things and when to keep it simple. His ability has shone through since pre-season and he looks a real talent based on his early competitive appearances.”

Of those to make 16 or more appearances, the Albion loanee ranks among the best for chances created as he’s provided 1.1 key passes per 90, whilst he’s not afraid of having a pop at goal either, averaging 1.7 shots per 90, via WhoScored.

Given the dubious future of West Brom right now, both financially and in terms of player turnover, Azaz could become a ready-made option, especially if the Midlands side are relegated straight back to the Championship.

Matheus Pereira has been above and beyond their best player this term, averaging the second-highest WhoScored rating in the team. He’s both their top goalscorer and top provider, and has delivered more shots and key passes than any other Baggies star too.

Which only emphasises why Azaz could be his heir at some point later down the line, given his ability to create and left fly with an effort or two.

The Hawthorns prodigy could be the next big thing to make it at the Baggies.

Spurs dealt Lo Celso injury blow

Tottenham Hotspur will be without Giovani Lo Celso for Sunday’s Premier League clash with West Ham.

What’s the word?

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho confirmed the huge injury blow ahead of his side’s trip to the London Stadium and will also be without Sergio Reguilon, who is working his way back to fitness.

When asked about Lo Celso’s recovery from a hamstring injury, Mourinho said:

“I don’t know. Not close.

“I think Reguilon next week against Wolfsberger home match.

“Not Gio. No, no, no. Gio is still a few weeks away, and of course, we need him because he gives us lots of qualities and options, and we’ve missed him for a long time.”

Lo Celso has not played for Spurs since December 2020 and has only featured for 90′ minutes once in the Premier League in the past three months.

The setback is bad news for Mourinho, with the Lilywhites travelling to West Ham at the weekend hoping to go seventh in the Premier League.

Lost for ideas?

It’s no coincidence Lo Celso’s issues have coincided with Spurs’ recent poor run of form domestically. The Lilywhites have lost four out of their past five Premier League fixtures in a row, including a humbling 3-1 defeat at the hands of defending champions Liverpool at home, with the Argentine noticeably absent.

After initially struggling under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino, the 21-cap Argentina international has seen his fortunes transform dramatically under Mourinho, with the Portuguese boss himself even saying that he “can be an amazing player” after he inspired Spurs to victory over Ludogrets in the Europa League back in November.

And when you take a deeper look at the numbers, it’s easy to see why he’ll be such a massive miss for Mourinho against West Ham. He ranks third for key passes per game (0.8), seventh for shots (0.8), and fifth for fouls (1.4), which shows he is a real menace in almost every area.

Indeed, with an average WhoScored match rating of 7.51 in the Europa League, Lo Celso ranks the second-highest out of the entire Spurs squad, second only to Lucas Moura.

Together with Tanguy Ndombele, he has become a key part of the supply chain for Mourinho’s side, and his continued absence for such a long period of time will undoubtedly be a big blow.

Especially after the manger’s claim that the north Londoners “need him” involved in this campaign.

Since joining Spurs from Real Betis in 2019, Lo Celso has already missed 29 matches and is increasingly becoming another sicknote in the same ilk as Erik Lamela, which is why the ‘Special One’ should be hugely worried.

While he may not show it, there’s no doubting the fact that the former Chelsea manager will be harbouring concerns about his side’s chances of securing all three points against the high-flying Hammers.

Phil Hay confirms Rodrigo blow for Leeds

Leeds United have suffered a major injury blow ahead of their Premier League clash against Aston Villa on Saturday with news that Rodrigo will once again be missing from action.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay confirmed via Marcelo Bielsa’s pre-match press conference that the Spain international has not fully recovered from the groin injury he picked up early on against Leicester, despite seemingly posting on Instagram last week that he was back on the training pitch.

Speaking after he initially picked up the problem, Bielsa revealed: “Rodrigo fell and his legs separated and caused an elongation more than usual and this caused the injury. I saw a picture of the position both of his feet ended up in and the difference between them was different to what we would expect.”

Rodrigo’s continued absence from the starting line-up comes as a major blow for the Leeds boss, who has had to turn to the unfancied Tyler Roberts in recent games.

And, while the Welshman has done well to try and fill Rodrigo’s boots (he picked up an assist against Southampton last time out), it’s a tall order to ask someone who’s managed just seven goals in 69 games to be a consistent and reliable performer for the Whites.

While Rodrigo hasn’t exactly set the world alight at Elland Road, he brings some important qualities to the table for Bielsa, namely being Patrick Bamford’s chief supporting act in attack and also being a supplier of chances too.

In his debut season in English football, the Spaniard ranks third for shots per game for Leeds and joint-fourth for key passes, with Tyler Roberts eighth and 11th respectively for those same categories.

The drop off between the two is huge, and it’s exactly why Bielsa will be worried about the former Valencia man continuing to be out of first-team action.

With the Villa game too soon for his comeback, it’s up to Roberts – a man who was linked with an exit to the Championship just last month – to try and step into Rodrigo’s shoes.
