Should Everton consider Paulo Fonseca?

When Carlo Ancelotti left Everton at the beginning of the week, it was a monumental shock.

The Italian had only just gotten started at Goodison Park but was now packing his bags and returning to the Bernabeu to manage his beloved Real Madrid.

An opportunity like that is far too good to turn down but it will have left Farhad Moshiri pulling his hair out.

This wasn’t the start to the summer the Toffees hierarchy will have envisaged. Transfer plans have been ripped apart and during a crucial period for the club, they are now unstable again.

Everton haven’t been afraid to pull the trigger on the likes of Marco Silva, Ronald Koeman and Roberto Martinez but Ancelotti was supposed to be the rescue act; a decorated head coach capable of taking them to new heights.

However, the Merseyside club cannot afford to panic.

They have drawn up a lengthy list of targets and have spoken to former Wolves boss Nuno Santo about the vacant position.

Though, they should strongly consider other options as well; namely Paulo Fonseca, who was linked with the job this week.

The Portuguese is set to be replaced by Jose Mourinho at Roma this summer and thus, will become a free agent.

At the age of 48, he is still a young coach but he’s achieved some fabulous things with both Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine.

He reached the semi-finals of the Europa League with Roma this term and knows what it takes to manage on the continental and domestic fronts at the same time.

On top of that, his methods and play style are “brave” in the words of Fonseca himself. He encourages his players to move the ball quickly and positively, ensuring a brand of swashbuckling attacking football.

Everton don’t always play with the handbrake off so this would be particularly encouraging for the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison.

The Toffees only scored 47 goals this season, the worst number in the Premier League’s top ten and the same number as Southampton who finished in 15th place.

Fonseca could be game-changing in this regard, particularly if you take into account his success at Shakhtar.

He guided them to three consecutive top-flight titles and took plaudits from Pep Guardiola along the way.

“Before every game against Shakhtar, I have the same feeling,” the Manchester City boss said in 2017.

“The first time we face them in the group stage, my [scouting] team went to see them and they came back saying, ‘Wow.’ They were really impressed. In Barcelona all the time it was, ‘Shakhtar, Ukraine, who cares which players play, nobody knows them.’

“I can assure you it was one of the best teams in terms of playing football. It was so tough for me.”

Guardiola also focused on Shakhtar’s ability to create space in behind, something that could be beneficial for the quicker players in Everton’s front line.

During Fonseca’s spell in Ukraine, the attacking triumvirate of Taison, Marlos and Junior Moraes scored a combined 88 goals in three years.

With an eye-catching attitude to football, Moshiri could find worse Ancelotti replacements than Fonseca.

AND in other news, Everton may find a new Pienaar by signing 22y/o who can “torment defenders everywhere”…

Mahmood Ahmad27-Jan-2001Younis Khan hit a magnificent hundred as Pakistan Probables, making 271 runs in the allotted 50 overs, beat Lahore Panthers by a comprehensive margin of 82 runs in the second of the trial series of five matches, which was played under lights at the Gadaffi Stadium, Lahore.Pakistan Probables were led by Wasim Akram in the absence of Moin Khan in this match and the side looked depleted by the absence of Inzamam-ul-Haq, Yousaf Youhana, Shahid Afridi, Waqar Younis, and Shoaib Akhtar in their ranks. However, they put up a good show after being put into bat by the Panthers captain, Faisal Iqbal.Younis, the attacking right-handed middle-order batsman, came to the crease after the fall of Saeed Anwar and Imran Nazir, the opening partners for Pakistan Probables. He added a quickfire 109 for the third wicket with Saleem Elahi (68) to provide a firm base for the late order to take the score past the 250-run mark, which was never going to be an easy target for the young Panthers side. After the loss of Saleem with the total at 152 in the 28th over, Younis found a useful ally in Misbah-ul-Haq. These two scored at almost a run-a-ball to take the score to 230 by the 39th over.At this stage, the introduction of paceman Shabbir Ahmed into the attack saw them lose three quick wickets, including that of Younis, for the addition of 14 runs. Younis’s knock contained eight fours and three sixes, as he faced 96 balls. His innings was chanceless except when a slight lapse in concentration immediately after reaching his hundred, saw him edging the ball from the part-timer Taufeeq Umar high in the air. However, the opportunity was squandered by Kamran Akmal, who was keeping wicket for the Panthers.Probables’ remaining four wickets failed to cash in upon the excellent start, as only Wasim Akram could muster quick runs in the closing stages of the innings. Despite this brave showing by the skipper, the team was dismissed for 271 with two overs still to be bowled.Lahore Panthers started off nicely in their run chase, as their opening pair of Taufeeq Umar and Mohammad Ramzan added 74 for the first wicket in 18 overs. Taufeeq, particularly, was in good nick as he scored runs freely against the Probables’ attack led by Wasim Akram. However, the introduction of little Mushtaq Ahmed from the Pavilion End put the barkes on the scoring rate, as he found considerable turn. The fall of two quick wickets – that of Ramzan and Qaiser Abbas – for the addition of 12 runs further worsened the situation for the Panthers. The Panthers had reached their hundred for the loss of only two wickets, but in the process they had consumed 28 overs, thanks to an over-cautious approach by Faisal Iqbal, who had come to the crease after the fall of the second wicket at 86.The skipper added 32 for the third wicket with Taufeeq before the latter, in an attempt to accelerate the scoring rate, gave his wicket away for 70 (92 balls). The fall of Taufeeq’s wicket brought Naved Latif to the crease. Naved, who opens the bat for Sargodha in domestic competitions, had fascinated the cricketing world by scoring a mammoth 394 against Gujranwala in a Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match last November. He played some useful shots in the opening part of his innings, but with Faisal Iqbal at the other end, the required rate kept creeping upwards. Both Faisal and Naved played out the remaining overs of the innings without posing any threat to the target. At the end of their 50 overs, the Panthers could manage only 189 for the loss of three wickets, with Faisal and Naveed each having an unbeaten 42 against their names.Younis Khan was awarded the man of the match award for his fine effort with the bat. Shabbir Ahmed, after his figures of four for 33 for Panthers, was declared best bowler, while Faisal Iqbal, who took four catches, was adjudged the best fielder.

West Brom consider Neil appointment

With a number of twists and turns having already occurred in West Bromwich Albion’s bid to appoint Sam Allardyce’s successor at The Hawthorns this summer, as approaches for targets such as Chris Wilder, David Wagner and Roy Hodgson have all fallen through for a variety of reasons, Guochuan Lai may have just stumbled upon a perfect candidate for the role.

Following the news that the West Brom owner had personally blocked a move to appoint Wilder as the club’s new manager, the former Huddersfield Town head coach, David Wagner, emerged as a surprising leading candidate for the position, with reports suggesting that the 49-year-old was set to be announced as the Baggies new boss in the coming days.

However, Wagner now looks as if he will be heading to Switzerland to become the new Young Boys boss, meaning that West Brom’s search rumbles on, with a host of new names being linked with the job.

One of these names is Alex Neil, and, considering the 40-year-old’s history of managing sides in the Championship as well as Scotland, West Brom could have finally found the right man for the job.

The Alex Neil bounce

After being appointed as the Hamilton Academical manager as a 31-year-old towards the back end of the club’s 2012/13 Scottish Championship campaign, Neil won five, drew one and lost one of his first seven games in charge of the Scottish side, with the Accies finishing the season in fifth place.

The following year, the young coach guided his side to a second-place finish in the second tier of Scottish football following a highly impressive season, eventually going on to seal promotion to the Scottish Premiership via the play-offs.

Neil’s upwards trajectory with Hamilton continued in the club’s 2014/15 campaign, with the Accies winning 12, drawing three and losing five of their first 20 Premiership fixtures, with the club, rather remarkably, sitting in third place in the top flight of Scottish football.

This form was enough for Championship side Norwich City to take a gamble on the Hamilton manager, appointing him as their new boss in January of 2015, when the club were sitting in seventh place in the league, three points outside the play-off places.

Neil went on to guide the Canaries to third that season, before winning the play-off final and securing the return of Premier League football to Carrow Road.

However, Norwich struggled in the top flight the following year, being relegated with 34 points, before Neil left the club in the 2016/17 season.

The best part of four seasons at Preston North End followed for the 40-year-old, with the Scot twice narrowly missing out on a top-six finish with the Lilywhites, securing a seventh-place finish in his first year at Deepdale and a ninth-place finish in 2019/20, before he parted company with the club in March this year.

As such, while history would suggest that Neil is not particularly a long term manager, he very much appears to have an immediate impact on a side after taking over, something that, with West Brom looking to secure an immediate return to the Premier League next season, could be an extremely useful string to the manager’s bow.

So, if the club cannot convince Guochuan Lai of a move to appoint Wilder, the manager Sebastien Bassong dubbed a “perfect” coach could well be the next best choice for the Baggies.

Stephen Waugh out of one-day team

Stephen Waugh will not be selected in the Australian one-day international team to tour South Africa and Zimbabwe in March, it was announced today.

Australian Cricket Board13-Feb-2002Stephen Waugh will not be selected in the Australian one-day international team to tour South Africa and Zimbabwe in March, it was announced today. The decision to omit Waugh from the one-day team was taken by the National Selection panel of Trevor Hohns (Chairman), Allan Border, David Boon and Andrew Hilditch.ACB Chief Executive, James Sutherland, said that in making the decision the selectors were meeting their obligation to put their judgement on the needs of the team ahead of all other considerations.”The selectors have one primary obligation to Australian cricket and that is to pick the team that in their judgement is the best side to represent our country. As difficult as it might be, they have taken this decision to fulfil this obligation,” said Mr Sutherland.Since making his debut in the shortened form of the game in December 1985, Waugh has made 325 one-day appearances, the last of them in the VB Series clash against South Africa in Perth on 3 February, an Australian record.Only India’s Mohammad Azharuddin (334 matches) has played more one-day matches, with Australia’s next most capped one-day player Border with 273 appearances.Only one other player, in addition to Waugh and Azharuddin – Pakistan’s Wasim Akram (323) – has topped 300 one-day matches for his country.Stephen Waugh said that he was disappointed by the decision but would be working to regain his place in the team.”Of course this is an extremely disappointing decision. The challenge for me is to now ensure that the Australian Test team wins the series against South Africa and to play well enough to force my way back into the one-day team,” said Waugh.Chairman of Selectors, Trevor Hohns, said it had been a tough decision to make.”Making this decision has been extremely difficult and it is not one that anyone likes but as selectors our responsibility is to pick what we believe to be the best side for Australia. We believe that there are now players ahead of Steve for one-day selection,” said Mr Hohns.”After reflecting on the VB Series, we decided that for the one-day side to continue to be successful and to prepare for the 2003 World Cup, it was time to make this change.”There is no ideal time to announce a decision like this, but by making the change now we hope that it will give the new captain a chance to step up and grow into the role well before next February.”It will also allow us to consult with that person so that he can have some input into the side that contests the one-day series in South Africa beginning next month.”In announcing the decision, Mr Sutherland also highlighted Stephen Waugh’s contribution to the one-day team.”Stephen has made an outstanding contribution to one-day cricket in this country as one-day captain over the past four years and has played a major part in building Australia’s record in this form of the game.”Waugh has captained Australia in 106 limited-overs matches with 67 wins, 35 losses, three ties and one no-result. Only six players have led their country more often in one-day cricket. With the bat, Waugh’s 7569 runs at 32.90 is the second highest aggregate by an Australian player, eclipsed only by his brother Mark, who has 8500 runs at 39.35 from 244 matches.Stephen also has 195 wickets to his credit in one-day internationals, leaving him 18th on the list of all-time leading wicket-takers in that form of the game. Of Australians, only Shane Warne (268) and Glenn McGrath (226) are ahead of him.Waugh also has two World Cup winning medals to his credit, first as part of Border’s side that beat England in Calcutta in 1987, then as captain when he led the team to a final win over Pakistan at Lord’s in 1999.That 1999 tournament also included Waugh’s highest score in one-day internationals, an unbeaten 120 against South Africa at Headingley in a must-win game for his side, one of three one-day hundreds he has scored. The selectors will as soon as practicable recommend a captain and vice-captain to the Australian Cricket Board’s 14 Directors while the squad for the seven one-day internationals to be played against South Africa starting in Johannesburg on Friday 22 March will be named in due course.Waugh will depart for South Africa with the rest of the Test squad on Thursday 14 February.

Leicester City should stick with Danny Ward

Leicester City may already have the perfect heir to club-legend Kasper Schmeichel in the shape of Danny Ward.

What’s the story?

The 27-year-old goalkeeper arrived at the King Power Stadium three years ago via a £12.5 million move from fellow Premier League outfit Liverpool.

But Ward has failed to establish himself in the starting XI at Leicester, largely thanks to the continued brilliance of regular No.1 Schmeichel.

However, his outstanding display in Wales’ opening Euro 2020 group game has reminded everyone of the forgotten man’s quality and highlighted his potential to replace his teammate between the sticks in the near future.

Rodgers could save millions

Ward has spent most of his senior career playing second fiddle, sitting on the bench and watching on from the sidelines, waiting for his chance to impress.

Since arriving at the King Power Stadium back in 2018, the rarely-seen 6 ft 2 colossus has made just 14 appearances for the Foxes, conceding eight goals and keeping eight clean sheets.

On top of that, Ward is still waiting to make his Premier League debut for Leicester, with all of his outings coming in cup competitions.

His lack of action meant he’s drifted into the background at the Midlands outfit, overshadowed up by the excellence of his teammates, but it looks like they have never doubted his quality.

Recently retired ex-Leicester captain Wes Morgan has expressed his belief in his former colleague’s ability after seeing him in action on the training pitch on a daily basis.

“He is incredible,” Morgan said in an interview with The Athletic. “I had the pleasure of seeing him day in and day out, week after week, and he is a tremendous goalkeeper.

“It is one of those where if Kasper ever gets suspended or injured, you would have full trust in Wardy coming in and doing a fantastic job.

“It is difficult for him. Kasper has just had an incredible season and is one of the best keepers in the world, and Wardy’s chances might be limited, but everyone knows how good he is.”

With Schmeichel entering the twilight years of his career and turning 35 in November, Ward could save Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers millions in the transfer market.

At seven years Schmeichel’s junior, the Welshman could take over the reins from the Denmark international as when his powers begin to fade, allowing the North Irish tactician to focus the club’s resources elsewhere.

And, in other news…Top could deal Leicester a huge blow after big news emerges, Rodgers would be gutted
