West Ham fans fume over Abraham update

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have fumed in response to ExWHUemployee’s update involving striker target Tammy Abraham.

Abraham has been linked with a move to east London for quite some time now as the Hammers continue their chase for a new striker.

Reports as far back as April explained West Ham’s interest in signing the 23-year-old but his mooted £40 million valuation will be an issue.

Irons boss David Moyes admitted that they wouldn’t be able to afford a figure that high but claims have surfaced recently of a possible price drop – propelling West Ham into pole position (Football Insider).

ExWHUemployee, sharing the latest on his Twitter feed, has now dropped his own update on the Irons’ pursuit.

The club insider explains that Abraham is still a target for Moyes but his salary demands have somewhat put West Ham off, with the player currently earning around £140,000-per-week (Claret & Hugh).

He also says that other options are ‘being explored’ as a result.

Flocking to this news, many West Ham fans have voiced their discontent on social media in reply to Ex – find their verdicts from Twitter down below.

Taylor seals win with last-ball six

A round-up from the latest Twenty20 Cup matches where there are some incident-packed games

Jacques Rudolph and Anthony McGrath added 121, both hitting half centuries, although Yorkshire were made to sweat for their six-wicket win against Leicestershire, the match coming down to the last ball at Grace Road. Yorkshire began the final over needing seven, but just four singles came from five balls. It left Chris Taylor – only playing because of an injury to Craig White – needing three off the last delivery, and he did it in style with a six off Jim Allenby. Rudolph (56) and McGrath (59) did most of the work after coming to the crease at the same time. In a bizarre incident, Michael Vaughan was run out and Andrew Gale retired hurt off the same ball. Vaughan turned for a second, only to see Gale flat-out with a twisted ankle. Vaughan couldn’t beat a direct hit from Jacques du Toit, while Gale also had to leave the field. HD Ackerman anchored Leicestershire innings with 57 off 51 balls, but despite some meaty blows from Dillon du Preez their total wasn’t quite enough and they remain winless.Click here for John Ward’s report on a high-scoring game between Lancashire and Durham at Old TraffordMid/West/Wales DivisionRob White chose the perfect time to hit his best Twenty20 score as Northamptonshire chased down 171 to beat Gloucestershire at Milton Keynes. White’s brilliant 94 off 57 balls, including eight fours and three sixes, ensured Northamptonshire had 10 balls to spare in their chase. Nicky Boje helped him complete the job, although his share of a 110-run stand was just 27. White’s hitting took the limelight away from Hamish Marshall’s dazzling display after he’d launched 59 off 33 deliveries. Gloucestershire lost Craig Spearman early, forced to retire hurt after a delivery from Johan van der Wath cracked into his helmet causing a cut.Warwickshire kept themselves in touch near the top of the group with a seven-wicket victory against local rivals Worcestershire at New Road. Jonathan Trott produced a measured innings at the top of the order as Warwickshire reached their target with 10 balls to spare, but Worcestershire didn’t help their cause with some sloppy fielding. Despite losing just four wickets, Worcestershire struggled to build momentum during their innings after the initial aggression from Vikram Solanki and Graeme Hick was broken. Solanki continued to a 48-ball 50, but the Warwickshire bowlers did a good job restricting the scoring in the later overs. Spinners Ant Botha and Ian Salisbury proved difficult to attack and Man-of-the Match Neil Carter’s four overs went for a miserly 14 runs.Peter Trego’s 79 off 50 balls put Somerset on course for their first Twenty20 win of the season with a 15-run success against Glamorgan at Taunton. Herschelle Gibbs kept the visitors in with a chance, taking Glamorgan to 117 for 1 in the 13th over alongside Robert Croft. But Croft was caught at backward point for a 37-ball 50 and the run chase lost its way. Somerset had got off to a shaky start, losing Marcus Trescothick and Justin Langer cheaply, but Trego played a mature innings. He added 59 for the fourth wicket with Craig Kieswetter, who should have been run out on 4 but Croft fluffed the take at the bowler’s end. It was a costly error.South DivisionDanish Kaneria played a key role in helping Essex to a seven-wicket victory against struggling Sussex at Hove. Kaneria’s four overs cost just 18 runs and included the key wickets of Murray Goodwin and Chris Adams. Goodwin was well-set on 47 and preparing for a late charge when he was bowled by Kaneria, who earlier trapped Adams lbw for 2 as he attempted a reverse sweep. From 123 for 3 Sussex’s innings fell away dramatically as the last seven wickets went for 21 in 21 balls. Essex stuttered slightly at 69 for 3, but an unbroken partnership of 77 between Grant Flower and James Foster made the target appear very comfortable as victory came with three overs to spare. The defeat all but ends Sussex’s hopes of making the knock-out stages.

'Overawed' South African attack on recovery road

Vincent Barnes, South Africa’s assistant coach, is confident his bowlers will bounce back to take 20 wickets in the second Test at Headingley

The failure of South Africa’s bowlers at Lord’s may have taken as much print space as the pre-series hype, but Vincent Barnes, the assistant coach, is confident they will bounce back to take 20 wickets in the second Test at Headingley.Although disappointed, Barnes said the media hype could be one of the reasons for the collective failure of his attack – Makhaya Ntini went wicketless for 130, Dale Steyn managed 1 for 117, Paul Harris 3 for 129 and Morne Morkel was the pick of the lot with 4 for 121. “It was a combination of things,” Barnes told Independent Online, “although I don’t want to make excuses for what happened.”We have a young attack and it was a huge occasion for them as they were playing their first game at Lord’s. There’s no doubt that they were overawed,” he said. “There was also a lot of hype in the media about the South Africans having the fastest attack since the West Indies in the 1980s and the guys started to believe it. We were also unable to get onto the field [because of the weather] and couldn’t get a feel of the ground, and in particular the slope.”Barnes said his bowlers are working on getting back to their best. “We reminded them that they lost their game plan,” he said. “Bowling is all about patience, pressure and operating in partnerships. The guys just didn’t apply their skills.”In England’s innings of 593 for 8, only 74% of the deliveries bowled by the South Africans pitched on a good line (around middle and off, or just outside off). In contrast, England’s bowlers hit the right line 85% of the time. The South African attack also struggled with their length, and it was left to the batsmen to salvage the draw by batting out the last two days.”All the bowlers have a strong feeling that they’ve let the team down, and they’re desperate to make sure that it doesn’t happen again.”Meanwhile, the team management is working behind the scenes to pep up their bowlers. According to SuperSport, Jeremy Snape, who has joined as the team’s performance coach, told the bowlers, “I want you to be at your best; not at your fastest or at your most hostile, but at your best.”Barnes also revealed how he was working with the bowlers. “I’ve done technical work with the guys and a lot of video analysis,” he said. “I’ve sat down with the bowlers individually, for two hours each, and shown them examples of what they can do when they were bowling well.”I showed Dale Steyn his bowling at Newlands in the New Year Test against West Indies when he was bowling at 150kph and swinging it big, and one of his best spells at Chennai against India when he took four for 10 in eight overs with the old ball.”Makhaya has tended in the past to make slow starts to series,” he said, a fact which is borne out by stats – Ntini averages 33.52 in the first Tests of series, but improves to 22.96 in second Tests. “We worked hard to get his intensity up, so that he knew his first ball had to be his best ball. But it didn’t happen. Nevertheless, we are confident he will get better.” The second Test starts on July 18.

West Ham fans react to Antonio statistic

West Ham United striker Michail Antonio could have 37 matches between this weekend’s season opener and 28 December, Football London correspondent Tom Clark has found.

Clark points out that the Jamaican national team still have eight more games pencilled in before the end of the year.

If West Ham were to progress through their first two Carabao Cup fixtures, he could therefore be eligible for a game every 3.5 days until the year is out.

Antonio may struggle to cope with fixture pile-up

Antonio’s injury history already makes for concerning reading. Since the start of the 2016/17 season, he has picked up 15 separate injuries. Five of those came last term, sidelining him for a total of 13 matches.

West Ham’s pre-Christmas schedule has become considerably busier after their sixth-placed finish last season secured qualification for the Europa League.

The Irons could look to address concerns over squad depth by recruiting a backup striker. Football Insider reported at the weekend that they had opened preliminary talks with Liverpool over a potential deal for Divock Origi.

Here’s what West Ham supporters made of Clark’s findings about the potentially “insane” workload which awaits for Antonio.

Southampton linked with Ethan Ampadu

Southampton have been credited with an interest in Chelsea defender Ethan Ampadu recently, and the Wales international could be a superb addition at St Mary’s.

What’s the word?

According to Hampshire Live journalist Tom Leach, the 20-year-old centre-back is one of the names being considered as a replacement for Jannik Vestergaard at Southampton this summer.

He wrote: “Still at Chelsea and seemingly destined for a season on the sidelines, Ethan Ampadu could be available for transfer this summer.

“Now aged 20, the Exeter City academy graduate could tick boxes in both midfield and defence at Southampton.

“There would be some concerns for fans, with Ampadu having been relegated last season with Sheffield United, even if he did impress during his time with Hasenhuttl’s former club RB Leipzig.

“However, should Chelsea decide that he is only available for a loan move, Saints would be out of the race with the club unable to sign another player on loan from Stamford Bridge after bringing youngster Armando Broja to the south coast.”

Would Ampadu be a good signing?

Ampadu’s chances of featuring in the first team at Chelsea this season look slim when you consider the options Thomas Tuchel has available to him in defence and midfield.

Considering that Trevoh Chalobah was named ahead of the Welshman in Chelsea’s starting lineup against Crystal Palace in their opening Premier League game (and scoring), with Ampadu failing to even make the bench, you could argue that the latter needs either another loan or a permanent move away from Stamford Bridge this season.

As Leach suggests, a loan move for the centre-back would be impossible, but they have already done several deals with Chelsea this summer and could use their contacts there to negotiate another deal for the £13.5m-rated youngster.

Although you could argue that Southampton are in need of an experienced head at the back, Ampadu seems to fit their transfer plans perfectly. He is young, has Premier League experience and can feature in both defence and midfield, which is something Hasenhuttl has suggested that he wants from any defender they sign between now and the end of the window.

The 20-year-old also has plenty of experience playing for his country and was praised by Wales manager Rob Page last season, who said: “He has a lot of strings to his bow and it is great to have a versatile player like that.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431”]

Therefore, if Chelsea are willing to let Ampadu leave on a permanent deal, then Southampton should definitely look to bring him in, as he seems to be the sort of tactically flexible player that Hasenhuttl would love to have in his squad.
