Rakesh Dhurv delayed it with 11 fours in an unbeaten 52, but Gujarat finally sealed a thumping innings-and-227-run win over Saurashtra. At 74 for 5 in the second innings, trailing by 354 runs, Saurashtra needed a batting effort far different from what they managed on the previous two days.It was nearly eight overs when Siddharth Trivedi struck the first blow, removing Sandip Maniar for 3 – the team score was 95. Pratik Mehta and opener Kanaiya Vaghela added 32 in 15.3 overs. Mehta was bowled by Ashraf Makda for 28, and Trivedi got Vaghela soon after. Vaghela’s 36 came off 188 balls, lasting nearly four-and-a-half hours at the crease. Mohnish Parmar removed Sandeep Jobanputra, but Gujarat were frustrated by the last-wicket pair of Dhurv and debutant Jayesh Odedra, who played out 66 deliveries for his 10. Amit Singh’s lone wicket of the innings ended the match. The win gave Gujarat six points, an emphatic way for the promoted team to kick off the season.

Tamil Nadu chose to enforce the follow-on after left-arm spinner C Suresh took career-best figures of 5 for 122 to bowl out Maharashtra for 457 in reply to the visitors’ 648. But on a flat Nasik pitch they could not repeat the effort a second time and had to be content with the three points from the first-innings lead. Suresh added two wickets to his three yesterday as the Maharashtra lower order managed only 56 more before being bowled out. Then Kedar Jadhav and Nikhil Paradkar frustrated their attempts with a 164-run stand after the first three wickets fell for 55. First-innings centurion Ameya Shrikhande was caught and bowled for 28 but Jadhav, who scored a half-century yesterday, batted for fours hours for his 95. He played cautiously after Paradkar was dismissed for a well-made 92, falling less than three overs before stumps.

Hyderabad batted out the final day as their match against Orissa ended in an expected draw in Cuttack. Having bowled out Orissa for 269 and gained points from a first-innings lead on day three, Hyderabad chose to get some batting practice today.Debutant D Rushi Raj made up for his first-innings 15 to score a patient fifty, while Anoop Pai got his second half-century of the match. Ravi Teja and Arjun Yadav also chipped in with useful scores as the Orissa bowlers toiled for 76 overs for their wickets. Debasis Mohanty got five wickets for the match while Preetamjit Das took four.
Scorecard
The only delight for Andhra in their draw with Uttar Pradesh was legspinner M Suresh’s career-best figures of 5 for 80. UP had gained a first-innings lead by then and Andhra had to be satisfied by bowling them out and then batting out the remaining 45 overs to get one point from the match.Centuries from Mohammad Kaif and Tanmay Srivastava overnight left the hosts needing five runs to get the three points for the first-innings lead. Medium-pacer Israel Raju triggered the collapse by removing Piyush Chawla off the first ball the day. But the points had been gained by the time Suresh took his first wicket – having Ravikant Shukla caught by Raju. He wrapped up the tail soon enough, taking the last three wickets in successive overs. Andhra openers Hemal Watekar (65) and Prasad Reddy added 128 together before Watekar was bowled an over before stumps.
Scorecard
An anti-climax draw followed after fifteen wickets fell in the day and Railways were a target of 104 to be chased in nine overs. Yere Goud’s unbeaten 122 gave Railways a first-innings lead of 24 after which debutant medium-pacer Anureet Singh took 6 for 49 to bowl out Karnataka for 127.Goud, who had reached his century yesterday, was aided by tail-enders Murali Kartik (11) and Harvinder Singh (22) in getting Railways the lead. Then Sanjib Sanyal removed the Karnataka openers with 46 on the board. Anureet made his appearance soon after, bowling G Satish for 19. He took two wickets in two overs – removing Thilak Naidu and first-innings centurion Robin Uthappa for ducks. Sanyal and Karan Sharma took two wickets each. It was unlikely that Railways would have tried to chase the target considering they needed nearly 12 an over. But their innings was also not short of drama – they lost their openers in the first two overs with only six on the board. Raja Ali and Sanjay Bangar batted out two more overs before the teams decided to call it a draw.
Scorecard
Legspinner Chetanya Nanda joined the list of half-centurions in Delhi’s first innings and prolonged the Punjab bowlers’ misery in the draw at the Roshnara Club Ground in Delhi. He was the sixth batsman to get a half-century in the innings as Delhi extended their first-innings lead to 128. Gagandeep Singh dismissed him for 56 to end the innings and get 3 for 97. Nanda then took two wickets , including Yuvraj Singh for 38, as Punjab batted out the 49 overs remaining in the day.
ScorecardMumbai scored a convincing 237-run victory against Rajasthan to start their campaign on an ominous note. Rajasthan’s top order had crumbled meekly on the previous evening and there wasn’t much resistance from the rest as they crumbled to 171. Dhawal Kulkarni took four wickets in the second innings to finish one short of becoming the second Mumbai bowler (after Suru Nayak) to take ten wickets on debut. Read the full report here.

Reporter warns Palace fans to be patient with Odsonne Edouard

Crystal Palace fans will have to be patient with deadline day recruit Odsonne Edouard, according to The Celtic Way reporter Anthony Haggerty.

Patrick Vieira, who was appointed as Roy Hodgson’s successor in July, solved his search for a new striker by signing Edouard from Celtic in a deal worth £14million.

Palace followed up their interest in Edouard after being unwilling to meet Arsenal’s £20million valuation for Eddie Nketiah.

Edouard has made the move to Selhurst Park having enjoyed a trophy-laden stint with Scottish giants Celtic, where he scored 86 goals in 179 appearances.

The 23-year-old, who is the France under-21s’ all-time top goalscorer, has also enjoyed an impressive start to the new season by finding the back of the net three times.

But he was ready for a fresh challenge and even changed his agent at the start of the year as he looked to seal a move away from Celtic.

Haggerty is certain Edouard will be prolific for Palace but feels he still needs to work on his game if he is to be a roaring success in the Premier League.

He told Football FanCast: “I think he is a highly talented and skilful footballer. In front of goal, he will score if you put him through one-on-one or put the ball across the box. He takes a mean free-kick as well.

“He will frustrate the life out of you though. He will take an extra touch and try to beat guys.

“To cut it in the Premier League, you need to be the complete package, run into the channels, play guys in, hold it up and compete. That’s maybe where he lacks.”

Conor Coventry: West Ham’s Rice heir?

Despite the transfer window closing a week ago, Declan Rice’s long-term future at West Ham United has been thrown into doubt once again.

Back in early July, the Telegraph’s Matt Law claimed that the 22-year-old England international had rejected two new contract offers from the Irons’ hierarchy in an attempt to see if any interest materialised during the summer.

Most of the Premier League’s top dogs have been mooted with a move for the young midfielder in recent times, namely Champions of Europe Chelsea and Manchester United.

And now, fresh reports suggest that Rice expects this current season will be his last at the London Stadium.

According to 90min, the Hammers star is open to signing an extension on the basis that it includes a release clause that would leave the club powerless if any team did come forward with a bid in the future.

Whilst it remains to be seen whether this campaign will indeed be his final one in the claret and blue but you’d be foolish to think that Rice will be sticking around east London for years to come.

That’s because he continues to thrive on the international stage, having earned his 24th cap this week, whilst his Transfermarkt value has soared to £63m thanks to his phenomenal and consistent performances on the pitch in the Premier League. He is so deserving of a team in the Champions League, and if we’re being honest, that may not be the Hammers in the long run.

But perhaps David Moyes and co shouldn’t sweat about it too much. They could well already have his dream successor right under their nose.

Conor Coventry is thought to be very highly-rated among those at the Irons’ Rush Green training base, particularly the Scotsman. But after the arrival of Alex Kral on loan on deadline day, the young academy gem was allowed to join Peterborough United on loan.

He will now get valuable minutes in the Championship, though if West Ham need him, he can be recalled, so that goes to show just how much Moyes thinks of him.

Described as an “exciting talent” by The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas, Coventry excelled during pre-season in the absence of Rice, who was enjoying a well-deserved post-Euro 2020 break.

He has only racked up three senior appearances in the League Cup but the 21-year-old has to be considered the heir to Rice’s throne in the near future. The Hammers faithful have even spotted the similarities in playing style between the pair in the past, so they may well have no problem in him stepping up when the time comes.

Indeed, the Daily Mail’s secret scout claims that the West Ham youth product is “powerful in the challenge” and “is not frightened to surge forward”, which is very much similar to rice.

If Coventry delivers at the Championship outfit this season, then it’ll only bolster his claims to replace the England international in the next few seasons. He could even be granted a first-team spot sooner than this, with club legend Mark Noble set to retire at the end of the season.

Moyes may well already have the Irons’ perfect Rice heir at the club.

AND in other news, Moyes’ deadline day decision has handed West Ham big boost over £35k-p/w “machine”…

Spurs: Nuno handed fresh selection headache

Tottenham Hotspur boss Nuno Santo has been handed a fresh selection headache heading into their return to Premier League action this weekend.

Young centre-back Joe Rodon is yet to feature for the Portuguese head coach this season, having suffered an injury during pre-season and the 47-year-old knows that he’s a player that is in need of minutes on the pitch.

Speaking ahead of their encounter with his former club, Wolves, Nuno told reporters, via the official website:

“Joe missed the game (at Pacos de Ferreira), and that was disappointing for us because he’s one of the players who needs to play, who needs to get real competition time. He’s better, but not well enough to join us on Sunday.”

But in a fresh update, it has been revealed that the 23-year-old colossus has joined up with his national side, Wales, for their remaining fixtures this international break, which means he would be available for selection against Crystal Palace on Saturday – barring any sudden setbacks.

“‘Following successful rehabilitation, Joe Rodon has joined the squad in Cardiff,’ a statement by the Football Association of Wales read,” tweeted injury analyst Ben Dinnery earlier this week.

The £9m-rated defender played 14 times for Spurs across all competitions last season, following his £11m move from Championship outfit Swansea City, before starting all four of Wales’ matches at Euro 2020, via Transfermarkt.

Rodon is evidently one for the future after club legend Graham Roberts dubbed him as a player with “huge potential”, but just as Nuno claimed last month, he needs minutes, and that leaves the Spurs boss in a tricky predicament, particularly as the partnership of Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez is yet to concede in the Premier League.

Whilst he will certainly want to get the group stages of the UEFA Europa Conference League off to a good start, so it would be a risk to throw the £24k-per-week gem right into the deep end.

Despite hardly featuring for the Lilywhites in 2020/21, the Wales international was one of the more productive defensive options, registering a squad-high 2.6 interceptions per 90 minutes (next best was whilst also recording the highest passing success rate (88.1%) of anyone at Spurs except Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, as per WhoScored.

His former Swans boss Steve Cooper dubbed him a “pure defender” and a “real asset”, so it must only be a matter of time before he is given an opportunity under Nuno.

Although, it is on the Spurs chief to make that tough call when the time is right. His return does no favours heading into his next starting XI.

AND in other news, Spurs dealt big setback over “unplayable” £27m-rated beast, Nuno will be devastated…

Rain hampers England's preparations

England’s preparations for the first Test against India were limited to just half a training session at their camp in Abu Dhabi owing to poor weather

England’s preparations for the first Test against India were limited to just half a training session at their camp in Abu Dhabi owing to poor weather.Heavy rain prevented the players from leaving their hotel until after lunch, curtailing their much-needed training and keenness to concentrate on cricket after a turbulent few weeks. With the first Test just five days away, there is precious little time for England to hone their skills. Not only have they been on and off long-haul flights in recent days but it is also more than three months since England last played a Test. With the warm-up match in Vadodara scrapped the squad will have to make do with nets and some middle practice between each other.Hugh Morris, the managing director of England cricket, has flown to Chennai to assess security ahead of the Test on Thursday, and a decision is expected on Sunday over whether the tour party will get the go-ahead to return to India. Morris and his namesake, Sean, the Professional Cricketers’ Association chief executive, along with security advisor Reg Dickason, are due to report back to the team on Sunday evening. All being well, England will travel back to India on Monday.Dickason has already inspected Chennai and is due to visit Mohali, the venue of the second Test, on December 8. While the BCCI says it has responded to all the ECB’s requests for extra security measures, reports from India on Thursday about airport alerts means the situation remains fluid. An expanded England party of 38 – including 24 players – arrived in Dubai in the early hours of Friday morning before travelling to Abu Dhabi. They didn’t check into their hotel until 4.15am, but nine hours later headed to the Sheikh Zayed Stadium for a practice session.”Obviously, the situation being the way it is, we have got to make best use of the facilities,” Paul Collingwood told the Press Association on Friday. “Sunday is D-day, when we get the full security reports, and really, from a cricketing perspective, we have to be mentally right for starting on Thursday.”We need to get the physical side back into our bodies – batting for long periods of time, for example – which is what we will get for the next three days here,” he added. “What we’ve got to do as a group of players is be 100% mentally attuned to starting on Thursday, take all the distractions out of the way and when it comes to Sunday night, talk about it again and make a decision.”It is not an ideal situation, but the facilities in Abu Dhabi are excellent and, all being well, all of us should be on the plane to India on Monday morning,” Collingwood said. “We all have concerns for obvious reasons but we are leaving it in the hands of the people who know what is going on. We have to trust the guys at the top: Reg Dickason, the ECB and BCCI to come up with the right decisions to make it safe for us to go.”The Test party is light on bowling resources – Ryan Sidebottom is out of the series with a side injury and Stuart Broad ruled out of the first Test with the hamstring strain he picked up in the fifth ODI. Ten players from the Performance Squad have travelled to Abu Dhabi to help with preparations, including late addition Adil Rashid, the Yorkshire legspinner. However, it is more likely that England will need to take an extra seamer to Chennai as currently there are just three fit frontline quicks – Andrew Flintoff, Steve Harmison and James Anderson. Sajid Mahmood and Amjad Khan were added to the one-day squad after the fifth ODI but never had a chance to join up before the tour was suspended. They probably head the queue if reinforcements are required next week.
