Leeds could return for Nandez in January

Leeds United could reignite their interest in a deal to bring Nahitan Nandez to Elland Road in the winter transfer market.

What’s the talk?

According to recent reports from Italy (via Leeds Live), Victor Orta could once again pursue a deal for the Cagliari midfielder in January, with the Whites having been heavily linked with a move for the 25-year-old over the course of the summer transfer window.

The report goes on to state that, after failing to secure a move prior to the passing of the summer transfer deadline, with the likes of Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspur reported to have been keen on the Uruguay international, Nandez is eager to find a new club in January.

Previous reports had also claimed that, despite the midfielder having a €36m (£31m) release clause in his current contract at Cagliari, the Serie A side were willing to part with the 25-year-old for a figure in the region of €26m (£22m) this summer – something that could well remain the case going forwards.

Orta could make amends

While Orta did secure the signings of Daniel James, Junior Firpo and Kristoffer Klaesson this summer, as well as the permanent addition of Jack Harrison, it is undeniable that the director of football’s failure to bring in any reinforcements in the middle of the park was something of a disaster by the Spaniard.

Indeed, with only Kalvin Phillips as a viable option in defensive midfield, as well as Mateusz Klich, Jamie Shackleton and Adam Forshaw – who hasn’t played a league game for almost two years due to injury – in central midfield, it is clear that the position is one in which Marcelo Bielsa lacks any real depth.

However, the news that Nandez could well be available once again in January presents Orta with an opportunity to make up for his failure this summer, as the 25-year-old would appear to make an excellent addition to Bielsa’s options in midfield.

Indeed, over his 32 Serie A appearances for Cagliari last season, the £19.8m-rated midfielder – who can operate from defensive, central on the right of midfield – scored two goals, registered two assists and created four big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of one shot and making one key pass per game.

The player Italian football expert Conor Clancy dubbed a “machine” also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 0.7 interceptions, 1.8 tackles, 1.5 clearances and winning 6.1 duels per match.

These returns saw the £42k-per-week Uruguayan earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.80, with his performances playing a key role in ensuring that Cagliari retained their status as a top-flight side last term.

As such, it would certainly appear as if the addition of Nandez would be a very smart piece of business for Orta to get over the line this January, as the 25-year-old would not only plug a gap in the Leeds squad but would also help to raise the standard of quality in Bielsa’s midfield.

Positive Zimbabwe search for upset win

Cricinfo’s preview of the second match of the tri-series between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in Mirpur

Big PictureThe tri-series warmed up on Saturday with Zimbabwe edging out the hosts Bangladesh by 38 runs, a professional performance which would have given even the big shots a run for their money. One such team which nearly suffered an upset or two against the Zimbabweans in recent times is Sri Lanka. The five-match series in Zimbabwe in November threatened to end as one of the most dubiously one-sided contests after the first two games but the hosts showed the character to bounce back and make the opposition huff and puff for their remaining victories. The most worrisome aspect for Sri Lanka was the batting and the form of their captain Mahela Jayawardene who scored just 19 from four games. They scraped through in their chase of 147 in the fourth ODI and survived another scare in the fifth after defending a paltry 152. The batsmen were tested in conditions which didn’t suit them but they still can’t afford to relax in the friendlier conditions in Mirpur. Elton Chigumbura and Shakib Al Hasan displayed good technique on a turning track and had to graft it out after wickets had fallen. If Zimbabwe upset the Sri Lankans tomorrow, the final league game between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will be a virtual semi-final.Form guide (last five completed ODIs, most recent first)Sri Lanka WWWWW
Zimbabwe WLLLLWatch out forAjantha Mendis: Mendis has shown, in his short career so far, the ability to shoulder the spin attack on his own. He was devastating in Zimbabwe, picking up 15 wickets, including 6 for 29 in the fourth ODI. He showed no signs of discomfort after returning from an ankle injury in the Chittagong Test against Bangladesh, taking seven wickets. It will be interesting to see if Zimbabwe have formulated a plan to tackle him.Elton Chigumbura: The relief in his face said it all when he walked to collect the Man-of-the-Match award in the first match for his 64. Chigumbura said his fifty was a long time coming after a string of low scores – he had failed to cross double digits in his previous six innings. A demotion in the batting order worked to the Zimbabwe’s advantage as Chigumbura arrested a top-order slide, negotiated the spinners and accelerated in the third Powerplay to push the score past a match-winning 200. His timely introduction in to the bowling sent back Shakib and dislodged a threatening stand. With his batting back in shape, he’d want to improve his sub-standard average of 8.69 against the Sri Lankans.TeamsGiven how infrequently they manage to win, Zimbabwe won’t want to change a hair on the side that beat Bangladesh in the series opener.Zimbabwe (probable) 1 Vusi Sibanda, 2 Hamilton Masakadza, 3 Tatenda Taibu (wk), 4 Stuart Matsikenyeri, 5 Sean Williams, 6 Elton Chigumbura, 7 Keith Dabengwa, 8 Prosper Utseya (capt), 9 Ray Price, 10 Tawanda Mupariwa, 11 Ed RainsfordSanath Jayasuriya will likely get a game given how the openers tried out in Zimbabwe failed to ignite. With the in-form Tillakaratne Dilshan not part of the squad, Thilina Kandamby, Chamara Kapugedera, Jehan Mubarak and Angelo Mathews will vie for two spots in the middle order. The bowling pretty much picks itself, though Thilin Thushara will feel hard done if he misses out.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Upul Tharanga, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Thilina Kandamby, 6 Chamara Kapugedera, 7 Farveez Maharoof, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Dilhara Fernando, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Ajantha MendisStats and TriviaSri Lanka have bowled out Zimbabwe for less than 100 on three occasions. The most recent was the 67 in Harare in November 2008. Farveez Maharoof has been successful against Zimbabwe, taking 15 wickets in nine games. His career average is 24.33 but against the Zimbabweans it dips to 17.33. The teams are playing each other for the first time in Bangladesh.Quotes”We didn’t bat well, we played a poor game.”
Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful was decidedly tight lipped about his side’s defeat in game one.

Lower orders ensure first-innings points

A round-up of the second day of the fourth-round matches of the regional four-day competition

Cricinfo staff01-Feb-2009A plucky last-wicket stand of 45, between Bevon Brown and Andrew Richardson, steered defending champions and current table-toppers Jamaica to first-innings points against Barbados on a tense second day in Kingston. Precariously placed at 269 for 9, the pair scored the 24 runs needed to go past Barbados’ 293 in the first innings and helped Jamaica end on 314, a lead of 21. Brown finished unbeaten on 30 from 55 balls with three boundaries while Richardson was the last man out for 12. Resuming on 31 for no loss, Brenton Parchment (47) and Danza Hyatt (34) helped Jamaica make good progress, with both putting on an opening partnership of 74. But it was Wavell Hinds’ 75 which held the Jamaican innings together. He was involved in a crucial sixth-wicket stand of 92 with Keith Hibbert (25), lifting the team from a perilous 143 for 5 after lunch. Kevin Stoute was the most successful bowler for Barbados with 3 for 56, while Ryan Hinds and Dwayne Smith finished with two wickets apiece.Captain Travis Dowlin top-scored with 61 as Guyana took a narrow lead against the Leeward Islands in Nevis. If Dowlin’s half-century was vital, first-class debutant Christopher Barnwell, and the Crandon brothers, Royston and Esaun, played their parts with the bat as Guyana clawed to 229. From the overnight score of 20 without loss, and needing 206 more for first-innings points, Guyana had two early stutters before Narsingh Deonarine andDowlin linked up to push the score past 100. However, a five-wicket blitz by Tonito Willett and the legspinner Anthony Martin put Leewards on course for first-innings honours, with Guyana reduced to 209 for 8 at tea from 116 for 3 at lunch. But Esuan was to be the late-innings hero, stroking a 29-ball 33 to help Guyana reach safety. Leewards lost a wicket just before the close to finish on 63 for 1.Fifties from Andre Fletcher and Johnson Charles, along with key contributions down the order helped Windward Islands to first-innings points against CombinedCampuses & Colleges (CCC) in Barbados. Fletcher, whose place in the side was under cloud at the start of the season because of disciplinary action by the Windwards’ selectors, entertained the crowd with an explosive 69 after Charles had provided the early fireworks. Charles later settled down to score 54, as Windwards, replying to the CCC’s first innings total of 227, were dismissed for 323. A collapse in the middle though, saw them slip from 203 for 2 to 258 for 7 before a late flurry from Shane Shillingford and Mervyn Matthew for the eighth wicket yielded 69 runs, pushing Windwards to a lead of 96. Offspinner Ryan Austin was the pick of the CCC bowlers with 5 for 108, while Jamel Noel and Khismar Catlin bagged two each. Batting a second time, CCC reached 5 for no loss with captain Simon Jackson and Omar Phillips at the crease.

EFL Cup: Everton should turn to Branthwaite

For many of the opening few weeks of the season, there had been cries and lust for Ben Godfrey to return to the Everton squad.

The defender, who made England’s preliminary squad for the European Championships, had been missing in the opening weeks but has now returned.

He helped Everton defeat Burnley 3-1 a week ago but his performance against Aston Villa left plenty to be desired.

On the chalkboard

Godfrey was charged with playing at right-back on Saturday evening with Seamus Coleman ruled out for the next 2-3 weeks with a hamstring problem.

However, during the 90 minutes, the former Norwich man proved why he should really be playing in the middle of the backline.

He was caught out numerous times down Everton’s right-hand side, particularly by Leon Bailey during his late match-winning cameo for Dean Smith’s side.

As the Jamaican galloped down the Villa left to open his account for the club, the Toffees full-back was nowhere to be seen.

He’d been dragged across towards the left-hand side of the pitch and left acres of spaces for Bailey to pounce on the ball and then score.

The solution

If Rafa Benitez wants to rest Godfrey or take him out of the firing line for a match then the boss should consider unleashing one of Everton’s eye-catching teenagers.

One of them happens to be Jarrad Branthwaite. The 19-year-old played in Everton’s win over Huddersfield a few weeks ago and caught the eye.

As the Toffees reached the third round of the EFL Cup, the central defender completed a whopping 98% of his passes.

With Everton’s defence struggling this term, keeping just one clean sheet, Benitez should turn to the youngster against QPR on Tuesday evening.

The Carabao Cup is the perfect platform to unleash young players and offer them valuable experience.

Branthwaite has so far appeared six times for the Merseyside outfit but it’s in the cup competitions where he’ll arguably feel more comfortable.

Playing against Championship opposition should also be highly beneficial. He spent a period of last term on loan at Blackburn where he actually lost to Everton’s midweek opposition 1-0.

During his time there, Tony Mowbray was keen to praise the youngster after a 1-1 draw with Stoke: “[He’s] a seven or eight out of ten every week. Win your headers, play forward passes and just do your job as it says on the tin and I thought he done that very well today,” he said.

That builds on comments from his boss at Carlisle, Steven Pressley. He once tipped the defender for international stardom: “The truth is, I think he has got everything. He can pass the ball almost equally as good with both feet. He’s a terrific footballer.”

“If he continues to develop, then, without doubt, he can be an England player.”

With a number of options at centre-back for Benitez to choose from, it’s in matches like the one on Tuesday where Branthwaite really needs to stake his claim.

AND in other news, Everton rocked by big blow after weekend development, Benitez will be seething…

Pakistan have left out Rao Iftikhar Anjum from the 22 probables for the first Test against Sri Lanka, which starts in Karachi on February 21. The selectors have recalled left-hander Asim Kamal, and have also included some of the leading domestic performers this season – allrounder Fawad Alam and upcoming fast bowler Mohammad Talha.”Rao is a good fast bowler for one-day cricket, but we have depth in our fast bowling for Test matches,” chief selector Abdul Qadir said. Anjum, who has 56 ODI appearances, has played only one Test, against Sri Lanka in Kandy in 2006. The squad will be trimmed to 14 or 15 after a short training camp in Karachi, which starts on February 15.”We have good cushion in the middle-order with batsmen like Kamal, Faisal Iqbal and uncapped Saeed Bin Nasir,” Qadir said.
