South Africa Emerging Players, who have won all eight matches – six 50-over games and two Twenty20s – will start clear favourites against India, who pipped Australia to the final after a victory over New Zealand in the last league match.India have been inconsistent in the tournament, winning and losing four matches. They’ve won as many 50-over matches as Australia, and made it to the final only because they won one out of two Twenty20 games while Australia lost both. India will be encouraged, though, by the fact that they ran South Africa close in both the games in the tournament, losing by in ten runs and four wickets.South Africa have an enviable record in the tournament, and the key has been the contribution of several players. There is no stand-out star with the bat for South Africa, but four of their batsmen have scored more than 150 runs.Form guide

Watch out for..
Virat Kohli: Kohli has been in tremendous form, and is the third highest run-scorer of the series with 294 runs in six one-day matches. He has already scored a century and two fifties in six innings. He has raced to second on the wicket-takers list with nine, at an average of 13.33 and a miserly economy rate of 3.42 runs an over. de Villiers was the destroyer-in-chief in South Africa’s massive 183-run win over Australia Institute of Sports, picking up figures of 5 for 15 in six overs.Team news

Man City fans love De Bruyne’s comments

A number of Manchester City supporters absolutely loved Kevin De Bruyne’s comments which seemed to mock Manchester United’s quality.

Pep Guardiola’s side enjoyed a superb derby win last weekend, cruising to a 2-0 victory away to their bitter rivals at Old Trafford.

The gulf in quality between the two sides was enormous for much of the game, and in truth, City could easily have won by more if they had wanted to.

It was the latest proof of how superior City are to United currently, and some fresh comments from De Bruyne suggested that Guardiola thinks very little of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Speaking to the MIDMID Podcast [via City Xtra on Twitter], the Belgian admitted that City trained for just 10 minutes in the lead-up to the game – far less than they normally to do in preparation to face an opponent. He said:

“The day before a game we usually train tactically, based on how the opponent plays. But before United, Pep said: ‘We don’t know how they are going to play. We shall see’. And we stopped training after 10 minutes or so.”Often Pep knows how the opponent is going to play. This time he didn’t know, so he didn’t know what to do.”

Villa fans erupt over more Gerrard news

After Aston Villa confirmed the appointment of Premier League legend Steven Gerrard to the managerial helm, they have now shared more news involving the 41-year-old which has delighted numerous fans.

Gerrard arrives at Villa Park aiming to turn around the fortunes of a team currently on a five-game losing streak in the Premier League. Indeed, their last victory came away to Manchester United in late September and a dismal run of results since then cost former boss Dean Smith his job in the Midlands.

A Scottish Premiership title winner, the Liverpudlian’s arrival signals a new era at Villa Park, and one where he will need sufficient backing both and off the field to succeed.

In an update, the club have now confirmed more news on Gerrard as his own vision for Villa begins to slowly take shape.

Following the 41-year-old into the club, the former England international’s backroom team has now been announced, with Gary McAllister (Assistant Head Coach), Michael Beale (Assistant Head Coach), Tom Culshaw (Technical Coach), Scott Mason (Lead Analyst) and Jordan Milsom (Head of Fitness and Conditioning) all arriving.

Meanwhile, some staff members from before Gerrard’s arrival like Austin MacPhee, Aaron Danks and Neil Cutler will also remain at the club.

Flocking to this update, there are a few popular names in there going by the reaction of some Villa supporters, with one man in particular certainly pleasing Villans.

Many fans are delighted that goalkeeping coach Cutler is set to stay, with one fan calling this decision ‘big’, and it’s little wonder given his reputation at the club. Indeed, current Villa number one Emiliano Martinez called him ‘one of the best coaches in England’ (avfc.co.uk).

Check out some of the fans’ verdicts on this club announcement below.

Ramprakash would 'cherish' England call-up

Mark Ramprakash has yet to be contacted by Geoff Miller’s selection panel, but said he would “cherish and savour” the opportunity to make a dramatic comeback in the final Ashes Test at The Oval

Alex Brown12-Aug-2009

‘If I had known 10 years ago what I know now there’s no question I would be in a better frame of mind to approach Test cricket’•Martin Williamson

Mark Ramprakash has yet to be contacted by Geoff Miller’s selection panel, but said he would “cherish and savour” the opportunity to make a dramatic comeback for the Ashes decider at The Oval. A day after Miller told Cricinfo Ramprakash was firmly in the frame for the contentious No. 3 position after a seven-year absence from Test cricket, the Surrey batsman declared himself available for a call-up that would fall a fortnight shy of his 40th birthday.”I just think that mentally, in terms of approaching a Test match, I’m probably in the best shape I’ve ever been,” Ramprakash told the Surrey website. “I’d be thrilled like any player selected to play for England in what is now a fantastic occasion. It’s been a fascinating series, and now at the Brit Oval it’s going to be a showpiece occasion. That’s why you play the game. For any player that is selected, it’s the sort of occasion that they will savour and cherish for the rest of their careers.”I suppose (the publicity) is all a result of what happened at Headingley and not only the defeat but the manner of defeat. Of course, as England supporters we’re all disappointed with the fact that having a 1-0 lead we’ve let the Aussies back in. The speculation has probably been whipped up really through that performance. I’m no stranger to this situation. I’ve had it before when my name has been linked strongly with trips to Australia – in fact the last two trips to Australia – and also the last tour to Sri Lanka. I’ve always tried to let my performances do the talking and I believe that I’ve presented a very strong case for all those occasions and again this year. I’m happy within myself, I’m batting well and playing good cricket.”Ramprakash insists he is a far superior cricketer now to that which made a tentative Test debut against the West Indies in 1991 alongside the likes of Graham Gooch, Allan Lamb and Graeme Hick. The 39-year-old has scored 1,209 runs at 100.75 for Surrey in the Championship’s second division this season, including scores of 80 and 130 not out in his most recent match against Derbyshire. He has averaged in excess of 90 over the last four first-class seasons, and has been a dominant force at his home ground, The Oval, which will host the Ashes decider from August 20.”I’ve seen some comments and articles and I think I have to respond because people sometimes still talk like it’s 1995,” he said. “I had a very difficult start in Test cricket, there’s no doubt about that. I’ve had two careers – 1991-1997 and from 1998-onwards, where I have performed a lot better. My last Test match was in 2002 at the age of 32 and I had a difficult tour of New Zealand along with several other batsmen on some juicy pitches. But over the last few years I’ve worked very hard at my game.”I still enjoy playing with Surrey. I think as a player and a person you just keep evolving, improving and developing. I’ve completed the ECB level four coaching course, which is aimed at professional coaching and has benefited me tremendously – just knowing myself as a person and communicating with other players. I was involved for 14 weeks in a very highly pressurised reality TV show, which was something totally out of my bubble. That’s a life experience. I think if you ask anyone if they had know ten years ago what they know now then they’d all say it would have helped them a great deal.”Alec Stewart, the former England captain and current Surrey consultant, insisted Ramprakash would be a stronger candidate for the England No. 3 position than incumbent Ravi Bopara and contenders Ian Bell, Jonathan Trott, Rob Key and Marcus Trescothick.”You have to move all sentiment to one side,” Stewart said. “England’s selectors I hope will pick the best side to regain to the Ashes. Forget anything about sentiment, forget anything about looking to the future, forget anything about consistency or continuity. Go and pick the best XI that gives England an opportunity to win the Ashes.”Ramps is in my best XI. The last Test he played was seven years ago, and people are allowed to change and mature. We don’t know what Jonathan Trott will do, we don’t know what Robert Key will do. All I’m saying is that if we don’t know about people, is it not better to pick the very, very best player that we’re not sure about.”He’s a mature person. He’s comfortable. Just look at his record: he averages 91 over the last four years. It’s never been technical, he did struggle to cope with everything that was thrown at him, but he’s seven years older and he knows what a great player he is. I have no doubt that if Ramprakash is picked, he will perform.”

Exames apontam lesões, e Lucas Lima e Renato desfalcam Santos

Rangers: GvB must unleash Jack Simpson

Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst is facing a huge first game in charge of the club as they take on Sparta Prague in the Europa League on Thursday.

The Dutchman takes charge after a frustrating 3-1 loss to Hibernian in the semi-final of the Scottish League Cup on Sunday, which robbed him of the chance of winning a trophy early on in his Gers managerial career.

Forget Balogun

One player in particular who struggled against Hibernian was Leon Balogun. The Nigeria international produced a worrying performance and Van Bronckhorst may take note of this ahead of his debut in the dugout.

BBC Scotland’s chief writer Tom English blasted the 33-year-old defender during the game. He said: “Martin Boyle and Kevin Nisbet have just been toying with Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun. Balogun is having a shocker. On that form he would struggle to get a game for the local pub team. He has been absolutely ripped apart and Goldson is not much better. He’s gone from this incredible leader they had last season to looking very vulnerable.”

This could potentially lead to him being axed from the side for the clash with Sparta Prague. The experienced defender could be in need of a rest to reset himself after his Hibernian performance, so Van Bronckhorst must unleash Jack Simspon as his replacement in the starting XI.

Balogun’s poor display could provide an opportunity for the £3.1k-per-week Englishman to come in and stake his claim for a place in the team. His most recent appearance came as a substitute against Motherwell and he caught the eye with an impressive, albeit brief, showing.

As per SofaScore, the 24-year-old won 100% of his duels and provided an assist in just 12 minutes on the pitch. He also came off the bench against St Johnstone earlier this season and made five clearances, whilst winning 100% of his duels, in 13 minutes.

This suggests that he has the potential to put in a strong performance if given the opportunity to play the full 90 minutes, as he has been solid when coming off the bench. Therefore, bringing him in from the start to replace Balogun could be a good decision by Van Bronckhorst in his first game in the dugout.

Ross Wilson hailed Simpson as a ‘much-coveted’ player upon his arrival at Rangers earlier this year. He said: “His contractual situation at Bournemouth provided a natural and attractive moment for us to pursue Jack’s signature. It has been well publicised that he has been a much-coveted player south of the border but from our first discussion with Jack, we could see how the opportunity to join Rangers was one that was very appealing to him.”

These comments suggest that Simpson has potential as a player, given the interest which was seemingly surrounding his signature, and Van Bronckhorst could help to unlock that by showing faith in him. At the age of 24, he has plenty of time left to develop into a key player for Rangers, and the Dutchman could hand him a huge chance to impress this week…

Clinical New Zealand seal series

Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder’s clinical hitting and Nathan McCullum’s teasing offspin were responsible for driving New Zealand to victory and handing Sri Lanka their fourth Twenty20 loss in a row

Having been beaten soundly in the Test series, New Zealand now head into the tri-series brimming with confidence after a second consecutive 20-over victory over Sri Lanka, this time by 22 runs. Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder’s clinical hitting and Nathan McCullum’s teasing offspin were responsible for driving New Zealand to victory and handing Sri Lanka their fourth Twenty20 loss in a row.Brendon McCullum and Ryder were badly out of form during the Test campaign, but showed both courage and muscle during an 84-run opening stand in 62 deliveries, while Nathan McCullum gave further proof that New Zealand’s limited-overs recruits have helped shape a change in fortunes. When Sri Lanka quickly slumped to 11 for 3 this game looked almost over as a contest, but Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara still had a sting to inflict, adding 67 in 43 balls. Then came the fatal blow in the 11th over, bowled by Nathan McCullum, as Jayawardene and Angelo Mathews departed to clever changes of pace. Thereafter, Sri Lanka were never in the hunt. There were to be no fireworks this evening from Tillakaratne Dilshan, who flicked straight to deep square leg in the first over, giving Shane Bond his first international wicket since 2007. In walked Mahela Udawatte at No. 3, the one change Sri Lanka made, and back out he went after he checked his first ball from Kyle Mills and gave point a dolly. Sri Lanka’s chances dimmed when Mills got Sanath Jayasuriya to miscue to midwicket in the fourth over.Mills’ third over wasn’t as productive, as Jayawardene put away two full tosses and a half-volley on the pads. After the Powerplay overs Sri Lanka were 37 for 3, compared to 64 for 2 on Wednesday. Then Jayawardene and Sangakkara stepped on the gas, rattling up a 50-run stand in 6 overs. Where Jayawardene improvised to dab the ball past Brendon McCullum behind the stumps, walk across and paddle, and pull six over fine leg, all off Ian Butler, Sangakkara used his feet to come out and bisect midwicket and square leg.By now the crowd had roared back to life and New Zealand appeared worried, but in one over the mood changed dramatically. Daniel Vettori called on Nathan McCullum, who came in for this game in place of Peter McGlashan, and within four balls he snapped Sri Lanka’s spine. Jayawardene’s top edge was well held by Ryder at short fine leg, and then Angelo Mathews chipped softly to midwicket. Vettori knew taking the pace off would work, and that was a sensational over from Nathan McCullum.Nathan McCullum put down a very tough caught-and-bowled chance off Sangakkara, who reached his half-century off 40 balls. Sangakkara kept flaying but his luck ran out on 69 when he top-edged back to Oram. Bond completed the dénouement with 3 for 18.It was only a matter of time before Brendon McCullum and Ryder found their groove in coloured clothing. Brendon McCullum got off the mark with a cramped chop to third man, but there was nothing restrained about strokes that raced to the boundaries at backward point, square leg and midwicket. Against Nuwan Kulasekara he began by pulling off his own version of the scoop trademarked by Dilshan, with some help from his helmet, getting way across and scooping the ball from outside off stump, on to Sangakkara’s helmet, for four.Lasith Malinga’s second over cost 19. First Brendon McCullum steered a couple to third man by getting outside leg stump, then backed away and carved six over backward point, put a no-ball away for four with power past two off-side fielders, and finished off by slapping three through cover.Ryder had been content allowing his partner take charge, ticking along to 10 by the time Brendon McCullum was 35. Ajantha Mendis came on for one over, the sixth, and allowed just three but Malinga Bandara was given a rude welcome by Ryder, who got down and swatted six over midwicket. He nonchalantly paddled Jayasuriya for four and Brendon McCullum slammed Dilshan for a six, his 100th boundary shot in this format. With New Zealand’s run rate 8.30, Jayasuriya struck when Brendon McCullum knocked back a return catch for 49. Ryder accelerated his game efficiently, repeating the slogged six twice off Dilshan in a 20-run 12th over in which he raised his fifty off 31 balls. Then Mendis returned to bowl the next over and immediately had Ryder beaten in the flight and popping an easy catch to extra cover.Jayasuriya, after a break and a change of ends, came back to dismiss Ross Taylor playing across the line for 16. Martin Guptill, demoted to No. 4, jacked the run-rate back with six and a four in Kulasekara’s comeback over, the 17th, which cost 17. Malinga bowled a seven-run final over in which he yorked Guptill for 32, but by getting 87 in the last ten overs New Zealand had done well.So well, in fact, that victory was all too easy.
