Everton: Juventus to offer Arthur for Digne

An update has emerged on Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo, regarding a potential move to Everton in January…

What’s the talk?

According to Italian outlet Sport Mediaset, the Serie A giants want to offload the Brazilian and a swap deal involving Lucas Digne could be on the cards.

The report claims that the Old Lady need a new left-back to replace Alex Sandro and sending their out-of-favour ex-Barcelona gem to Goodison Park could allow them to strike a deal for one.

Rafa would love him

Everton must pounce on this opportunity to sign Arthur from Juventus as he could be an excellent addition to the team. If Rafa Benitez is set on Digne leaving then it could be ideal to, at least, get a player back in return for him to bolster the squad ahead of the second half of the campaign.

Arthur has not had the best of times in Turin, with just two league starts this season, but the £31.5m-rated gem has shown in the past that he has the quality to be a top performer and Benitez would surely love him.

His former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi previously lauded his talent and adaptability upon his arrival at the club, saying:

“Arthur I didn’t know that much about but he seems similar to Xavi. He’s very safe and trustworthy. He has the La Masia style. Playing short passes, without losing the ball, and he grasped it quickly, the dynamic of the team.”

In his last season for the Spanish giants, he averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.84 in La Liga as he played 21 times and chipped in with three goals and three assists from midfield. He also averaged a score of 6.97 in the Champions League that term, proving that he can perform to a high standard at the top level.

Rafa would love him at Goodison Park as he could be a steady midfield presence who can perform consistently in the middle of the park, as per Messi’s comments on him being “trustworthy” and his statistics in his final year at Barcelona.

Of course, the beast’s lack of game time for Juventus is alarming and it remains to be seen how quickly he will be able to adapt to life in England because of his recent bench-warming. However, if the Toffees can get him back to the levels he was showing in La Liga and the Champions League for Barcelona then they could have a top player on their hands.

AND in other news, Bye-bye Digne: Rafa may ruthlessly replace £119k-p/w gem as EFC transfer news emerges…

Jimmy's long wait and de Villiers' miss

The plays of the day from the second day of the first Test at Centurion

Sahil Dutta and Andrew McGlashan17-Dec-2009

Makhaya Ntini nearly had the dream start to an emotional Test match•Getty Images

de Villiers drops the script…
Makhaya Ntini arrived at the crease to a standing ovation in his 100th Test. Yet it was his efforts with the ball which really brought the crowd to their feet, not least the Barmy Army, after a free drink was promised to everyone in the ground for the moment Ntini took his first wicket. With emotions running high, Ntini flew into an aggressive spell and immediately found the obliging edge of Alastair Cook’s bat. With the sure-handed AB de Villiers at third slip, Ntini was already celebrating, but astonishingly, the script flew straight through AB’s fingers. It was the closest Ntini came to a wicket, but an early beer could await the crowd tomorrow.Crowd invasion
How pleasing it was to see the fans allowed on the outfield during the lunch interval. It’s hard to remember the last time that happened during a Test match in countries such as England and Australia, where tough health and safety laws preclude it, or on the subcontinent, where security fears play their part. But shortly after the players had left for lunch, the crowd swarmed onto the ground and enjoyed the balmy weather while playing their own games of mini-cricket. They were able to stroll up and look at the pitch while children were able to run around on the same surface as their heroes. Nobody got hurt and no damage was done. Hopefully other administrators were watching.Jimmy’s long wait…
England’s ‘leader of the attack’ has actually been chasing his team-mates for a while. James Anderson had not managed a Test wicket since Edgbaston on August 3, when he had Shane Watson caught behind for 53. Since then he toiled without reward for 18 overs as England almost lost the Ashes at Headingley, before 21 more at The Oval as England won them back. Today, four months on, and after a further 26 overs in this game, he finally picked up the key wicket of Jacques Kallis to get England’s morning and Anderson’s series underway.Slippery hands
England bowlers couldn’t create many chances, but when they did, they inevitably seemed to find their way to Paul Collingwood. England’s best fielder took three catches yesterday and was snaffling them for fun in practice before play started today. When he caught JP Duminy, off Graeme Swann’s opening over, he equalled the England record for most outfield catches in an innings. He then had the chance to go clear at the top, when Harris top-edged an attempted cut, but he spilled it. His place in history is now shared with a fairly lengthy list of fellow players, with Marcus Trescothick against Zimbabwe at Lord’s in 2003 being the last.Down and then out
Morne Morkel was putting up stubborn resistance with an impressively determined innings when he got himself into a tangle against a well-directed short ball from Graham Onions and took a nasty blow on the chin. He staggered away from the crease and then went down on his haunches as concerned players quickly signalled for the physio. Looking a little dazed, Morkel lay on the ground as he was treated with some magic spray. Soon he was given the all-clear, but it wasn’t a surprise when he flashed outside off stump and edged to the keeper soon afterwards.Token effort
Plenty has already been said about the review system in this game, but today it worked as it was meant to, even if Graeme Swann is probably still convinced he had Morkel leg before only to see it overturned. South Africa had the better of the system – or rather used it better – so had both their reviews left when Friedel de Wet was given out to Swann to close the innings. He had nothing to lose so he asked for a second look and TV confirmed it was plumb. When teams have spare reviews at the end it’s going to lead to some rather hopeful requests.Young and old
South Africa’s new-ball attack was in the hands of two bowlers at opposite ends of their careers. Bowling the first over was 100-Test veteran Ntini and at the other was new cap Friedel de Wet. Ntini should have had a wicket in his first over, while de Wet could barely land his first ball on the cut strip. However, it was the debutant who ended up making the breakthrough and the man with 388 Test scalps had to wait to add to his tally.

Pakistan rocked by Aamer blow

Pakistan have suffered a major blow on the eve of the second Test with Mohammad Aamer ruled out with a groin injury.Mohammad Yousuf had expressed concern over Aamer waking up stiff this morning, and said they would make a decision only after he bowled in the nets. But Aamer had brushed off the concerns, saying it was just stiffness from bowling so many overs and that he would definitely play.”He has a groin injury and though it doesn’t appear serious, we decided not to risk him for the Test,” Abdur Raquib, the team manager, told Cricinfo. “He had a bowl and the on-tour selection committee decided to leave him out.”The 17-year old was Pakistan’s most incisive bowler for much of the first Test and ended up with his first five-wicket haul in the second innings, including the wickets of Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey. The figures included a fiery spell on the third on the third afternoon to Shane Watson, in which Aamer’s pace went 150kmph on a few occasions.Aamer’s late withdrawal means Pakistan will now start with Mohammad Asif, Umar Gul, Mohammad Sami and Danish Kaneria. Though it is still a strong attack, Pakistan will go into their second Test in a row without what would constitute a first-choice bowling quartet.

Celtic interested in Albert Gudmundsson

Celtic are interested in a deal to bring Albert Gudmundsson to Parkhead.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Telegraph, who claim that Ange Postecoglou’s side are keeping a very close eye on the situation of the AZ Alkmaar winger, who is out of contract at the end of the current campaign.

However, the report goes on to state that Celtic are not the only Premiership side keeping tabs on the 24-year-old forward, with the club’s Old Firm rivals also believed to be interested in a move for the Iceland international, while a number of other top sides across Europe are also thought to be monitoring the situation of Gudmundsson.

Bye-bye Ajeti

Considering just how impressive Gudmundsson has been for AZ Alkmaar in recent seasons, should Celtic be able to secure a deal for the versatile winger, it would undoubtedly be a massive coup for Postecoglou and his side – particularly if he were to arrive at Parkhead on a free transfer.

Indeed, over his 26 Eredivisie appearances in the club’s 2020/21 campaign, the £3.6m-rated man scored seven goals, registered four assists and created seven big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.2 shots and making 1.2 key passes per game.

These returns saw the 24-year-old – who can play anywhere across the front three, in addition to central and attacking midfield – earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.99, ranking him as AZ’s eighth-best performer in the top flight of Dutch football.

Meanwhile, over the £1.9k-per-week forward’s 16 league outings this season, Gudmundsson has already bagged four goals, provided one assist and created three big chances, as well as making an average of 0.9 key passes and taking 1.2 shots per fixture.

These returns have seen the 29-time capped international average a SofaScore match rating of 6.91, ranking him as his side’s ninth-best player in the Eredivisie.

As such, it is clear that a player who carries both the goalscoring threat and creativity of the winger would make a fantastic addition to Postecoglou’s current options in attack, while his potential arrival would very much appear to spell the end for the £18k-per-week Albian Ajeti.

Indeed, the player who Neil Lennon signed for £5m back in the summer of 2020 has been labelled a “problem” by Packie Bonner, and looks to be heading for an exit from Glasgow in the not too distant future – something which the arrival of Gudmundsson would all but confirm.

Akmal said 'sorry mate' three times – Kaneria

Danish Kaneria had a good day but it could have been better

Danish Kaneria had a good day but it could’ve been better. He took 4 for 117 in a familiar marathon spell, leading Pakistan as close to a Test victory against Australia as they have been in 15 years. Yet he could’ve had more; four catches were dropped off his bowling, of which he was at fault for one. A familiar name was at fault for the other three.Kamran Akmal has struggled, to put it politely, keeping wickets to Kaneria. Conservative estimates suggest he has dropped at least 15 catches off him over the last three years as well as missing a handful of stumpings. Michael Hussey was dropped thrice today on his way to a fighting, unbeaten 73, each time by Akmal off Kaneria. Had he held on to even one, the Test might not be going into a fourth day.Kaneria did the only thing he could in such a situation later in the day. He laughed about it. “One is okay, two is okay, three is too much I think,” he said. “I can’t do much else. He is trying his hardest and let’s just hope nothing goes wrong because we have another day and a Test at Hobart. It’s part of the game. He never means to do something wrong but it’s gone now, history. He said ‘Sorry mate.’ Three times.”Kaneria had a poor first session and only picked up as the afternoon wore on. After tea came his most fruitful period; he picked up three key wickets to hasten an Australian slide. The injured finger that had kept him out of the first Test was still playing on his mind; in dropping a catch at deep fine leg, he said he had tried to protect the finger.”I had an injured finger and was out of first Test,” he said. “My rhythm was not coming initially and something was wrong. So I just motivated myself. Waqar, Aaqib, especially the captain, and Inti all did as well. Then I just made myself think what am I doing wrong, I just focused, thought that I am doing everything ok and just lacking a bit of confidence. I came back hard and did well after that.”You don’t know when you will play or not. I was aiming to come back hard here. I’ve played here before and seen so many matches here. The SCG has never been so green but in the second innings it came good and I tried my best to deliver.”For most of a hot day, Kaneria was locked in at one end and only stopped as the day drew to a close. He had a few run-ins with players and officials – “they said you just need to calm down so I put tape on my mouth” – and cramps in his left calf forced him to go off the field. It was nothing serious, requiring only some icing and stretches.Australia are 80 ahead with only two wickets in hand and Kaneria said his side was confident they could pull off the first win against Australia in 15 years. “Hopefully, fingers crossed we can. Get two wickets as soon as possible tomorrow and play positive because cricket is a funny game. The Australians will come hard when they come to bowl. Nobody likes losing, it will be tough but we are very confident and should play our natural game. Australian always play hard cricket and tomorrow is a new day. Let’s see how it goes on. No matter if they get 120 or 130 we need to chase it down. I am and our team is very confident of our batting line-up.”

Lewis O’Brien "would jump" at Leeds move

Leeds United have been told that Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien “would jump” at the chance to move to Elland Road.

What’s the story?

Reports over the course of the summer transfer window suggested that the 23-year-old featured prominently on Marcelo Bielsa’s side’s shortlist, but a deal failed to materialise before the August deadline, with suggestions that the Whites’ final offer failed to meet Huddersfield’s demands.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has now claimed that the Terriers star would still be interested in making the switch to Elland Road if Leeds came back in for him.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “He signed a new contract at Huddersfield but I’m sure if the opportunity came to go to Leeds, it would be something that he would jump at. Let’s see if Huddersfield are able to turn down any offers for the midfielder.”

Could finally replace Klich

With 158 games played for Leeds, “unsung hero” Mateusz Klich has been a valued servant for Leeds over the years, but at 31, he is one of the players who Bielsa might look to slowly ease out of the side in the near future.

Speaking in February 2020, Bielsa raved: “He cannot do better. Klich is a player with very, very much skills physically. A player who runs more, more intense movements and makes more movements at maximal speed. His values are now linked with how he prepares mentally. This is the fact that makes him run. More hungry he is, the more he runs.”

That same intensity and energy is exactly what O’Brien brings to the table, and he could ultimately replace Klich at Elland Road.

Former Huddersfield shot-stopper Matt Glennon has raved about the 23-year-old’s work rate, saying: “He closes down until the 95th, 96th minute, still running to the corners, stopping defenders, he’s got unlimited energy.

“Lewis O’Brien wants to put the hard yards in and wants to be at the very top of where he can get to. He’s one of those lads who works ridiculously hard which, for me, is your minimum in any league, but he’s got that quality, the drop of a shoulder, that strength to keep people off him, a low centre of gravity to glide past people, arm aloft when they try to knock him off the ball.”

Nearly a decade his junior and clearly a man held in high esteem, O’Brien could well be the man to usurp Klich in the midfield engine room for Leeds.

Meanwhile, Victor Orta could solve a big issue by signing this star…
