The temperamental offspinner knows what it’s like to face a beamer, but when he bowled one today, his immediate reaction was soothing. Nevertheless, they stood up and applauded. The cheers returned when he came back to bat in the 15th over to get his side out of jail. He couldn’t do a Houdini but the fans didn’t complain too much because the match was already in the bag, when he finally departed.

Phil Hay has provided an important update regarding Leeds United’s pursuit of Brenden Aaronson, admitting that a second bid from the club is yet to be accepted by Red Bull Salzburg.

The Whites are clearly interested in acquiring the American’s signature this month, with two bids reportedly already made in recent days and Victor Orta an admirer of the 21-year-old, identifying him as a player who could develop under Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road.

Leeds are thought to have tabled an offer of £20m for Aaronson as they look to make a significant midfield addition in the January transfer window.

Speaking in a Q&A for The Athletic on Saturday, Hay admitted there are no signs that Leeds’ second bid will be accepted by Salzburg.

Revealing the latest on the Whites’ pursuit of the 21-year-old, the journalist outlined: “Sounded likely to me that Salzburg would turn the second bid down too. Haven’t been told that it’s been formally rejected but as we stand, it hasn’t been accepted.”

The Verdict: Salzburg holding firm

Salzburg are clearly desperate to keep hold of Aaronson this month, which is no great surprise considering that he has already scored 10 goals and registered 12 assists in 51 appearances for the club at such a young age.

Leeds may need to increase their offer further in order to get their man, at which point it could be tricky if a lack of funds are available for new additions.

Patience may be required in the coming days, but if the Whites can snap up Aaronson, he could be an ideal signing at a time when midfield reinforcements are essential with Kalvin Phillips out injured.

The ICC has ruled out creating a separate window in the FTP for lucrative domestic leagues like the IPL, despite increasing calls for the game’s governing body to figure out a way to allow players to participate without disrupting their international commitments.”We don’t envisage a separate window for a domestic event like the IPL,” Haroon Lorgat, the ICC’s CEO, said in New Delhi at the unveiling of the ICC World Twenty20 trophy. “We cannot incorporate all domestic events into the FTP. It is just not possible as there would be implications for all other member boards.”Players from Australia, New Zealand and West Indies had to miss the first few games of the IPL this season as they were busy playing for their countries. Australia and New Zealand were involved in a bilateral series and the players couldn’t reach India before April 1. Former Australian wicketkeeper and captain of Deccan Chargers, Adam Gilchrist, was the latest to join the chorus for an IPL window, pointing to the financial rewards for the players.Commenting on the Twenty20-heavy calendar, Lorgat said he wasn’t too concerned about possible player burnout once players assemble in the West Indies for the World Twenty20. The tournament begins on April 30, just five days after the conclusion of the six-week IPL. The 27-year-old is enjoying a hugely impressive season in his homeland, scoring 12 goals in just 21 La Liga appearances for Espanyol.

The Latest: Leeds linked with move

According to AS, Leeds are set to do battle with Arsenal and West Ham for the signature of the Espanyol man, whose current deal doesn’t expire until 2026.

The Gunners have identified him as an alternative to Dusan Vlahovic, while Leicester City are also mentioned as possible suitors.

It is stated that Espanyol don’t want to sell him for anything under €70million (£58.76m), though, so we would surely need to see that price come down if Victor Orta is to strike a deal.

The Verdict: Too expensive?

De Tomas’ ruthless form this season means he could be exactly what Leeds are after, in terms of providing stiff competition for Patrick Bamford.

The Englishman is the only real out and out goalscorer in the squad, meaning there is huge pressure on his shoulders and a gaping void to fill when he is not fit.

That being said, there is little to no chance that the Whites would pay the amount allegedly being demanded for De Tomas –  Rodrigo is the club’s record signing at £27million.

Cheaper alternatives must instead be looked at by Orta, with a summer addition more likely than January reinforcements, due to financial issues.

They have surprised many an Associate team during their stunning rise from Division Five to a world event. Yet they will know that what they are going to face – the pace of Zaheer Khan, the spin of Harbhajan Singh, the might of MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh – is nothing like anything they have faced so far.India will know Afghanistan are not quite Bangladesh, but it was a first-match loss to perceived minnows three years ago that knocked them out of the 50-over World Cup. They have not played a warm-up match this time, know little about their opponents and will want to be as alert as against their other group-mates, South Africa. On the other hand, they would like this slow transition from the IPL to top-level international cricket. A win against Afghanistan, no matter what the margin, will more or less assure them a place in the next round.
