Romano has bad news for Spurs fans

Tottenham Hotspur appear to be done this deadline day, according to Fabrizio Romano…

What’s the word?

With less than two hours to go before the January transfer window draws to a close, there isn’t likely to be any more activity in terms of incomings at Hotspur Way, despite being linked with a last-ditch move for Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele.

“Barcelona president Laporta: “We presented one last option to Ousmane Dembélé”. Tottenham are not negotiating for him – understand Spurs market is now almost completed,” the Italian journalist tweeted late on Monday night.

All but done

This will come as gutting news to many supporters, who are probably waiting up to see any late business before 11pm but that won’t be the case.

Earlier in the day, the club announced the double swoop of Juventus duo Rodrigo Bentancur, who has joined in an initial £15.9m deal that could rise by £5m – also signing a four-and-a-half-year deal – and Dejan Kulusevski, who arrives on an initial loan (£8.3m fee) with an option to buy for £29.2m, via the BBC.

Meanwhile, they have seen a handful of players depart.

Tanguy Ndombele has returned to Lyon on loan, Giovani Lo Celso has also made a temporary switch to Villarreal, Bryan Gil joins LaLiga rivals Valencia and Dele Alli will be signing for Premier League rivals Everton permanently.

It does leave manager Antonio Conte much lighter on options, especially in the final third, where there is now a lack of creative influence, not that either of those names were cutting the mustard this season.

He will also be upset to have missed out on a new right wing-back, losing out on Adama Traore to Barcelona. It’s thought that he doesn’t have faith in summer signing Emerson Royal or Matt Doherty due to their lack of effectiveness in the final third.

Conte could have also done with a new centre-back too as his current options aren’t the most reliable behind Eric Dier and Cristian Romero. That much is evident by the fact that left-back Ben Davies featuring in the back three instead.

All in all, Spurs are done until the summer, so they best hope that Bentancur and Kulusevski can help steer the north London outfit back into the top four this campaign.

AND in other news, Spurs could end D-day with a bang with 31-goal “phenomenon” who’s “better than Neymar”…

Irfan Pathan seeks to regain old magic

Irfan Pathan expressed disappointment at being ignored by selectors, but vowed to work harder and make a comeback into the Indian team.

Indian left-arm seamer Irfan Pathan is extremely disappointed at being left out of the Indian team yet again, this time for the tour of Zimbabwe, despite a consistent display this season. He is confident though that with sustained hard work and quality performances, he will make a comeback into the Indian team.”I really don’t know what to say. I was hopeful,” Pathan told the . “Every cricketer thinks of where he is going wrong and tries to work on his errors. I’m playing well but need to do better. I’m still hoping to make a comeback.”The start of Pathan’s Test career in Australia in 2003-04 promised much. His ability to swing the ball both ways prodigiously evoked comparisons with the legendary Wasim Akram and soon, his batting raised visions of another Kapil Dev. But after this heady start, ordinary years followed and Pathan soon found himself in the lurch. He had lost considerable pace and swing and despite consistent performances in the 2009-10 Ranji season, when he scored 397 runs at an average of close to 50 and picked up 22 wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the Duleep Trophy final, he was overlooked for the Zimbabwe tour and the India A tour of England as the selectors preferred to go with fresh faces.Pathan isn’t very sure when experts point to loss of pace being the biggest reason for his downfall. “But I have never been a 140-plus bowler,” he says. “I don’t know what people are expecting from me. Do they want to see me to bowl at 140-plus and take no wickets? Or do they want to see me swing my way to wickets and give away fewer runs? I was a bowler who could take wickets and perform whenever the team required.”Pathan has planned to work on his fitness for the next few months following the conclusion of the IPL. “At the moment I’m working on my body, hitting the gym. These three months will be crucial as I will work on my pace. It all depends on how I maintain my body,” he says.Pathan insists he has more plans but is reluctant to reveal them. He is hungry to return into the Indian team as it has been more than a year since he was last part of it.”It all depends on how my next season goes, I’m ready to do well again,” he added. “Ready for more hard work, ready to learn everyday, ready to come back.”

Rangers: Gio must axe Bassey vs Hearts

Rangers return to Premiership action today as Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men look to bounce back from their midweek humiliation against their arch-rivals.

The Gers were hammered 3-0 by Celtic at Parkhead on Wednesday night and now have the chance to return to winning ways against Hearts.

The Ibrox side may have some key selection decisions ahead of him as a number of players failed to impress last time out.

Forget Barisic

Whilst Borna Barisic was hooked at half-time against the Hoops after his dreadful error for Liel Abada’s goal to make it 3-0, the experienced Croatian left-back should keep his place in the side. He is a seasoned professional who knows how to perform at this level and should retain his position.

Barisic has averaged a phenomenal SofaScore rating of 7.26 in the Premiership this season. This shows that he has been sublime for the majority of the campaign and one half of football should not change that.

Instead of dropping him, van Bronckhorst must brutally axe centre-back Calvin Bassey from the XI. The defender has been a liability in the last two matches and it could be time for him to be taken out of the firing line for a match.

The Dutch head coach previously mentioned the Nigerian’s lack of game time at centre-back in his career, saying: “He does not have a lot of experience in the central positions.”

This could be why the £6.4k-per-week dud looked shaky against Celtic after his dismal showing against Ross County in the previous outing. He made a key error leading to a goal in the 3-3 draw and was all over the shop against Ange Postecoglou’s side as he consistently found himself out of position and leaving huge gaps behind him.

Leon Balogun came on at half-time against the Hoops and put in a solid display. As per SofaScore, he won three of his four duels and made two clearances, one block and two interceptions in just 45 minutes as the Gers kept a clean sheet in the second half.

The experienced Nigeria international could be the perfect player to come in to steady the ship on Sunday. Whilst Bassey’s inexperience may cause him to stutter, Balogun – 33 – has a long career behind him and should know how to put in reliable performances, as shown by his cameo in midweek, and could come in alongside Connor Goldson at the back.

Younis could be recalled for England tour – chief selector

Mohsin Khan, Pakistan’s chief selector, has hinted that former captain Younis Khan may be considered for the tour of England next month if the Pakistan Cricket Board gives the required clearance

Mohsin Khan, Pakistan’s chief selector, has hinted that former captain Younis Khan may be considered for the tour of England next month if the Pakistan Cricket Board gives the required clearance. Younis got his indefinite ban lifted by the PCB on appeal earlier this month, and he is currently playing for Surrey in the English County Championship.Pakistan are due to play a series of Tests, ODIs and Twenty20s against England and Australia in England next month under the leadership of Shahid Afridi. Younis quit the captaincy before the disastrous tour of Australia earlier this year.”The PCB need to give Younis clearance, in order for myself and my colleagues on the selection committee to consider his selection,” Mohsin told . “I’m hopeful that the board will give him clearance and the selection committee can think about whether we want to include him against England and Australia.”It’s very good that Younis is getting some cricket under his belt in England and we are happy with his progress so far. The signs that we are getting from Younis are that he is ready to comeback to international cricket, it all seems very positive. I believe that he can continue to play for Pakistan for another four or five years.”Younis has played two first-class matches for Surrey so far, scoring an unbeaten 77 against Leicestershire at The Oval. While he has signalled his intentions of getting back to top-flight cricket, Mohammad Yousuf hasn’t yet indicated any signs of a comeback.Yousuf, who captained Pakistan in Australia, was also banned indefinitely by the PCB and he responded by announcing his retirement. Though the door has been left open for his return, he hasn’t got in touch with the PCB yet.”The last I have heard from Yousuf is that he has retired from international cricket. I have heard nothing further,” Mohsin said. “If you don’t make yourself available, then how can the selectors even consider you for selection.”Mohsin said the squad for England will be announced after he meets with Afridi and coach Waqar Younis, who are currently in Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup.”We are scheduled to announce the squad for England on either 20th or 21st June,” Mohsin said. “I’ll be travelling to Sri Lanka and will sit down with Shahid and Waqar and we’ll settle on the squad for the long tour of England.”Pakistan begin their tour with two Twenty20s against Australia, followed by six back-to-back Tests, starting with two against Australia and four with England. Mohsin said team changes will be made in due course depending on the format.”The initial part of the tour of England is focussed on Twenty20 matches and we will select the squad accordingly,” he said. “Once the Test matches start against Australia on 13th July, we will have replaced some of the one-day specialists with players who are more suited to Test cricket. I would expect up to four changes to the squad once Pakistan take the field at Lord’s on 13th July.”

As reformas serão sentidas.

Surrey chief wants shorter Twenty20

Paul Sheldon, the Surrey chief executive, has criticised the ‘frenetic’ schedule in this season’s Friend Provident t20

Crowd numbers have been down this season with so many games being played•Getty Images

Paul Sheldon, the Surrey chief executive, has criticised the ‘frenetic’ schedule in this season’s Friend Provident t20 and has called for a reduced Twenty20 competition to be fit into a four-week window next year. When it was launched in 2003 Twenty20 cricket proved a major hit with the public but this year’s extended competition, which lasts 151 games, has come under fire from administrators as crowd numbers have fallen and Sheldon is the latest to express his disquiet.”We have evidence that the number of matches in this year’s competition has not increased interest,” he said. “We are strongly in favour of creating an enhanced competition, in a concentrated period of three to four weeks, involving both England and overseas players.”It was not just the diminishing crowds that concerned Sheldon, he also feels that with each side playing so many games the schedule has become cramped and prevents players from preparing fully for their matches.”The competition has been very frenetic with players dashing around the country in very very short order,” he added. “At one stage, we played a four-day match against Derbyshire and then had to start an FPt20 match back at The Oval less than 24 hours later. The time for preparation has really been foreshortened.”We are looking for a shorter, punchier competition. The quality needs to be stronger and the quantity fewer.”

Everton launch Portuguese scouting mission

An Everton scout was in attendance for Friday’s Primeira Liga clash between FC Porto and Sporting Lisbon, according to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

Paulinho and Nuno Santos fired Sporting into a two-goal lead within 35 minutes, but Fabio Vieira and Mehdi Taremi responded to preserve Porto’s unbeaten record and indeed the six-point gap between the two teams.

The game also saw five red cards, with Sebastian Coates dismissed in the second half and four more players – Joao Palhinha, Bruno Tabata, Agustin Marchasin and Pepe – seeing red after the final whistle as a fight broke out.

Planning will be underway for Frank Lampard’s first full transfer window at Everton, with the 43-year-old only officially appointed on deadline day last month.

The latest

A report from O Jogo on Saturday (via Sport Witness) revealed that an Everton official was watching on at the Estadio do Dragao.

They weren’t the only Premier League club assessing the talent on show, with a Newcastle scout also on the scene.

The verdict

Who might Everton have been watching on Friday? One likely candidate would be Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes.

O Jogo reported last summer that the Toffees were interested in the Brazilian, while Record claimed that a deal was ‘very close’ at one point and raised the possibility that it could happen at a later date. The player himself admitted that the interest from Merseyside was genuine.

Nunes produced a decent showing on the night, completing four of his five dribbles, winning the majority of his 25 duels and making three tackles (via SofaScore).

The 23-year-old, who is valued at £19.8m by Transfermarkt and was described as a ‘quality box-to-box midfielder’ by talent scout Jacek Kulig, may be one for Blues fans to keep an eye on, particularly with the eminent possibility that Goodison Park scouts have noticed his talents.
