Aston Villa’s poor form continued on Saturday afternoon, with Steven Gerrard’s side falling to a 1-0 defeat to Watford.

The Hornets hadn’t scored in their previous four Premier League games but Emmanuel Dennis’ late header earned the visitors three vital points.

Villa dominated the ball and had 20 shots, however, they are now winless in three, picking up just one point against Leeds, Newcastle and Watford.

Here at The Transfer Tavern, we’ve used statistical experts SofaScore to analyse Villa’s three worst performers to have played at least 45 minutes. In total, these players lost the ball 21 times, were second best in 71% of their aerial and ground duels and also failed to have a shot on goal.

Danny Ings – 6.3/10

First up is Ings, who came in for Ollie Watkins for a rare start under Gerrard. Unfortunately, the striker failed to take his chance from the off and was Villa’s worst-rated starter by some distance.

Ings gave possession away seven times, won just one of his 10 duels and failed to have a shot on target. He did hit the woodwork but managed just 33 touches all afternoon, ending with a rating of 6.3/10.

Douglas Luiz – 6.7/10

Luiz, who was slammed by Gregg Evans on Saturday, also makes the list.

The Brazilian only played 58 minutes and hardly contributed, failing to make a clearance or interception. The midfielder gave the ball away twice, lost three of his four duels and made just one tackle all afternoon.

Calum Chambers – 6.8/10

Last up is Chambers, who kept his place in the side with Ezri Konsa still suspended.

The centre-back ended with a rating of 6.8/10, losing possession on 12 occasions and losing seven of his 13 duels. Chambers made just one tackle and failed to make an interception and was unsuccessful in half of his attempted long balls.

North was easily the most disappointing of the top six during the series, scoring 36 including two ducks, and only the No. 11 Doug Bollinger had a lower aggregate.North made a century and a 90 on the tour of New Zealand in March, but since the start of the Australian summer his big scores have become less frequent. Smith, on the other hand, lit up the Headingley stadium with a dazzling 77 on the third afternoon to keep Australia in the match, and in his 15 first-class appearances he has made four centuries.One of the main selection queries for Australia on their tour of India in October will be whether they can find a way to retain Smith when Nathan Hauritz returns from injury. However, Ponting does not believe Smith is ready to challenge for a more senior batting role and he said the conditions had made it difficult for North and the rest of the batsmen this month.”I don’t think Smith will put pressure on North,” Ponting said. “I thought the runs we got out of Smith yesterday were pretty entertaining and very valuable as far as the game is concerned. Gerrard appears to be making a head start on his summer plans ahead of a first full season in charge at Villa Park. Reports over the last seven days have suggested that both Morgan Sanson and Anwar El Ghazi look set to move on from Bodymoor Heath in the summer.

Sanson made a rare start in the 2-1 defeat to Wolves but appears to be surplus to requirements, while El Ghazi looks set to move on after returning to the Midlands in the summer following his loan spell at Everton.

Konsa may now follow the pair out of the door at Bodymoor Heath, despite being a regular under both Dean Smith and Gerrard.

The Latest: Konsa reveal

Football Insider shared a story on Wednesday morning regarding Konsa after being informed by a recruitment source.

They revealed that Arsenal are in the hunt to sign the 24-year-old, with Gerrard informing Konsa’s agent that he is willing to listen to offers for the centre-back.

The Verdict: Shock

Konsa appeared to be a key member of Gerrard’s squad, starting the first 11 Premier League games after he took over and even scoring twice against Leicester back in December, so it would certainly be a shock to see him now sanction an exit for a promising young defender.

He was sent off against Leeds back in February, though, and has featured in just three of the last eight games, perhaps costing himself Gerrard’s trust with that mistake.

Villa only have four senior centre-backs to choose from too, so should Konsa depart, you’d expect that the club will have to be in the market for a new marquee defensive signing, making this news quite surprising.
