Australian selectors face tough questions

Australia’s 15-man World Cup squad must be named by Wednesday, but after years of planning the selectors face a string of last-minute decisions

Peter English17-Jan-2011Australia’s 15-man World Cup squad must be named by Wednesday, but after years of planning the selectors face a string of last-minute decisions. The injured Ricky Ponting is expected back in time for the tournament as he aims for his fourth win in a row, but this time he will have to do it with a team missing its usual batch of superstars. Here are some of the questions facing the selectors.Brett Lee is fit and ready for a second World Cup•Getty Images

Can Brett Lee and Shaun Tait fit into the same squad?
Brett Lee and Shaun Tait are almost unchallenged as fast men when they are at full fitness. The major problem for Australia is it doesn’t happen very often, setting up a risk-or-reward gamble. If they are on-song at 150kph, they will terrorise batsmen in most games and be expensive in others, but wickets are virtually guaranteed. If Australia take only one of the pair the other could be on standby as a like-for-like replacement in case of breakdown. Lee, 34, is now the front-runner after impressing at the MCG on Sunday after Tait pulled out with a back strain.Neither plays first-class cricket any longer, so this tournament is their international peak – and also a warm-up for the IPL. Lee’s return from injury – he had elbow surgery at the start of last year – could provide the side with a link to its all-conquering past, and help him overcome the disappointment of missing the 2007 event with damaged ankle ligaments. His international career started just after the 1999 triumph and he was the second-leading wicket-taker in South Africa four years later. How many spinners do Australia need?
Australia have always had slow-bowling problems when heading to the subcontinent, even when Shane Warne was around. How many do they need this time, and will any of those selected be able to make any impact? The offspinner Nathan Hauritz didn’t play in the opening ODI but is with the squad for the current one-day series against England and has been promised some games. That wouldn’t have occurred if he hadn’t been marked for a part at the World Cup.Xavier Doherty, the left-arm orthodox from Tasmania, was on trial at the MCG in his third ODI and went wicket-less. Steven Smith has a big future and his legbreaks will be required over the next couple of months, but he is not yet good enough to be a specialist with either bat or ball. And then there are the real part-timers. David Hussey, who must make a mark as a batsman first, collected two victims with his offspin in Melbourne when he was preferred in the early stages to Doherty; Michael Clarke can dart in some handy left-armers when his back allows; and at some point Cameron White might be asked if he still remembers how to roll his arm over. Even the selectors and coaching staff really don’t know the best combination in this key department. Are Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke worth their leadership roles?
Of course they are. Both Ponting and Clarke have had poor Test summers but they will be crucial ingredients if Australia are to have a successful campaign. Ponting is out with a broken little finger but expects to be back to lead the team in a tournament in which he has never lost a game as captain. He has been a part of the past three previous world-beating outfits and brings authority and aggression, even if his best days are behind him. However, whatever happens, he should seriously consider stepping down at the end of the competition and let the next generation emerge. Clarke is a vital piece in the middle order and is desperate to find some form and fluency to return to the top of his game after a rare, extended slump.Does Brad Haddin need an understudy?
Tim Paine was appointed Australia’s vice-captain for the T20s against England and Brad Haddin was dropped. Paine, 26, is being groomed for future leadership roles while Haddin was Clarke’s deputy for the SCG Test. It’s a strange time for Australia’s incumbent wicketkeeper, who usually gets to choose his engagements. Haddin, 33, is the more attacking batsman and will start at the top of the order, but his glovework is less assured. He was sloppy in the opening ODI, with three missed stumpings, and may struggle over two months in challenging conditions. There is no way he will be around for the next World Cup, so it would be sensible to send Paine for the experience, and to give Haddin a rest against Canada and Kenya.Who is going to miss out?
David Hussey and Tait sit right on the edge of selection, while a host of other players in the 30-man preliminary outfit are now no chance of making this week’s unit. It always seems crazy that Brad Hodge misses out despite his regular domestic heroics, while Ryan Harris, Mitchell Starc and James Pattinson have been injured. Dan Christian, John Hastings and Callum Ferguson, who broke his nose when he missed a short ball last week, should come into consideration if there are any injuries to the preferred 15.Possible squad Shane Watson, Brad Haddin (wk), Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Clarke, Cameron White, Michael Hussey, Steven Smith, Tim Paine (wk), Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Brett Lee, Xavier Doherty, Peter Siddle, Shaun Tait, Doug Bollinger.

Dupla vê jogo igual do Fluminense e projeta maior evolução no Brasileirão

Quase viramos o jogo. Foi de igual para igual. Tiveram mérito de fazer o gol. Agora, é hora de pensar no próximo jogo.

Australia there for the toppling

ESPNcricinfo previews Australia’s chances in the 2011 World Cup

Peter English11-Feb-2011Australia will start the competition aiming for their fourth World Cupvictory in a row, but in Ahmedabad on February 23 they will fieldsignificantly different personnel from their previous triumphs. While RickyPonting remains in charge, having never lost a fixture at the globaltournament under his leadership, he is the only true great left in the side.Glenn McGrath, Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden and Andrew Symonds have retired since the 2007 success, leaving with their seriously damaging weapons, while the loss of Michael Hussey to a hamstring injury was an unexpected and potentially very damaging blow.Amazingly, the last time Australia were defeated at the tournament was onMay 23, 1999, when they were upstaged by Pakistan in Leeds. That run towards the title, including the twin epics against South Africa, was a series ofgreat escapes until the one-sided finale. The next campaign had some nervousmoments but ended with the greatest obstacle being the weather; four yearslater in the Caribbean, no team could get close to Ponting’s.This time the rest of the world has a huge opportunity to make thingsdifferent. Australia have been ranked No.1 regularly without owning the fearor intimidation that came so easily to the previous sides. Often the battingis wobbly and the bowling inconsistent, traits which aren’t a surprise giventhe influx of new faces. In this tournament, Australia are there for thetoppling.World Cup pedigree
Australia’s results at the event are unrivalled. In nine tournaments theyhave reached the final six times, winning on four occasions. Thebreakthrough came in 1987, an achievement which helped turn the country fromeasy beats to globe-trotting conquerors. If Australia hadn’t slipped in thedecider to Sri Lanka, the most exciting side of 1996, Ponting would bechasing a fifth global trophy.Recent form
A 6-1 series win against England has given Australian fans hope that another World Cup is there for the taking. It should be remembered that the triumph came against a touring squad suffering Ashes hangover, and in vastly different conditions to those that will be provided in Asia. Their formline throughout 2010 was mixed; they began with 12 consecutive victories over West Indies, Pakistan and New Zealand, and coming after their 2009 Champions Trophy victory, the streak seemed to indicate they had resumed service as the game’s dominant force. By the end of the year those early results showed how weaktheir opponents had been. England, India and Sri Lanka provided much tougher tests and Australia lost each series, until the return to form post-Ashes.Expert eye
Ian Chappell : Australia begin their 2011 campaign with a surprising number of queries. The biggest ones being finding bowlers to consistently take wickets under sub-continent conditions and batsmen who aren’t contained by good spin bowling. On the plus side they’re led by Ricky Ponting who hasn’t lost a World Cup match as captain. He heads a dangerous batting line-up and if Mitchell Johnson performs at his best on the flatter pitches then Australia will once again be hard to beat. Their most dangerous opponents will be India and Sri Lanka. While I don’t expect Australia to maintain their incredible unbeaten run through a third consecutive World Cup, they should qualify for the semi-finals.Where they’re likely to finish
Given Australia’s changes and inconsistency leading into the tournament, reaching the semi-finals would be a worthy finish. But that wouldn’t satisfyPonting.Watchability
Having grown used to Australian sides being almost infallible, it will bethe side’s unpredictability and vulnerability that will be most fascinatingthis time. Previously it was known that at least one of the top six wouldscore heavily and the bowlers would be menacing. Now it’s easier to predictwhere Johnson will bowl than getting a firm guide on what willhappen. There are some senior run-makers who will need to hold everythingtogether, and the attack will deliver some frights if the bodies of BrettLee and Shaun Tait stay healthy. Spin bowling stands out as a major weaknesscompared with the subcontinent teams that will be happy at home.Players in focus
Ricky Ponting: Ponting hasn’t confirmed it, but something extreme would have to happen forhim to continue in coloured clothes after this tournament. He’s 36 and hasbeen a waning force over the past 18 months. The big occasions have alwaysinspired him and he starts his fourth World Cup second on the overallrun-list behind Sachin Tendulkar. Nobody who saw it will ever forget his 140in the 2003 final, a display which ripped the game from India. He willneed to touch those sorts of heights if he is to drag his team into thelatter stages, but he hasn’t played in any format since the Boxing Day Test, and how he returns after surgery on his broken finger is anyone’s guess.Shane Watson: There are not many players who have can a regular say on games with bat andball, but Shane Watson is one of them. After years of wondering if his bodywould let him be a top-flight force, Watson has graduated to become a fearedopponent. He is a punishing yet graceful opener, who is always looking toattack, and stamped himself as an elite ODI batsman with centuries in thesemi-final and final of the 2009 Champions Trophy, and has recent form with a brilliant unbeaten 161 in the series opener against England. With the ball, he canoperate above 140kph and is one of the few Australian bowlers guaranteed tomake the ball reverse, which are key skills in the subcontinent.Mitchell Johnson: Johnson has had a bumpy career but has been a consistent presence inAustralia’s major teams since 2007. A muscular and athletic fast bowler,Johnson is like the little girl with the curl. When he’s good, he’s very, very good. When he’s bad he’s horrid – but often still manages to pick upwickets. Ponting is a huge supporter of Johnson, having seen all sides ofhis work over the past four years. He can bat, too, but the Australianswould be happiest if he delivered consistent balls angling across thebatsmen in the high 140kphs, with the occasional one drifting back.

'We were schoolboys' admits Swann

Graeme Swann has admitted that England fielded like “a bunch of schoolboys” during their unimpressive six-wicket victory over the Netherlands at Nagpur on Tuesday

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Feb-2011

England’s fielding performance was woeful against the Dutch•Getty Images

Graeme Swann has admitted that England fielded like “a bunch of schoolboys” during their unimpressive six-wicket victory over the Netherlands at Nagpur on Tuesday, but believes that the prospect of taking on the hosts, India, in front of a packed stadium in Bangalore on Sunday will bring out the best in the team.Swann provided one of England’s few redeeming features during that Netherlands innings, as he returned the impressive figures of 2 for 35 on his return to action following the birth of his son Wilfred earlier in the week. However, even he was not exempt from criticism, as he dropped a sitter at third man to reprieve Mudassar Bukhari in the closing overs, as the Dutch reached a hefty 292 for 6.”We will need to raise our standards, particularly in the field because, let’s face it, we were like a bunch of schoolboys,” said Swann, who admitted to feeling the effects of the changed climate after his late arrival from the UK. “After 20 overs I looked up at the board desperate for it to be 45 overs gone, because I was absolutely cooked. That three-and-a-half hours felt like three-and-a-half months fielding.”The change of climate and temperature really does hit you hard,” he said. “I kept looking at the board praying the overs would tick over quicker than they did but, as everyone knows, when you want something to go quicker it never does.”England will hope that they’ve now got their worst performance out of their system, because with Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni lying in wait at the weekend, a similar lapse in standards will allow them no get-out. The team knows that all too well from their last ODI encounter in India, a 5-0 trouncing in November 2008 that was cut short by the Mumbai terrorist attacks.”The fact it’s against India in India is going to make it a huge game,” said Swann. “We had a very poor time of things in the one-day series here a couple of years ago. That’s certainly something we want to turn around, because there is nothing better than silencing an Indian crowd.”Sehwag is in prime form as demonstrated by his brilliant 175 in the opening fixture against Bangladesh in Dhaka, but Swann believed that England have the means to keep him quiet. “We’ve got our game plans and we know how we’re going to bowl at him but I’m not going to tell the press and give him a heads-up.”We’ve just got to get him out in the first couple of overs and there’s no problem – same as anyone. Of course, we’ll be underdogs to the Indian public – because they’ll believe that their team can win every game. It’s like a religion over here. The atmosphere you get, particularly when the home nation is playing, is something special that you remember.”With an extra few days to acclimatise before the India match, Swann expects to be fully ready for the challenge. However, that doesn’t mean that his current mixed feelings will evaporate overnight, after the speed with which he was required to say hello and goodbye to his new son.”It’s gut-wrenching to leave,” he said. “Within two days of the little fella coming into the world, I’m saying a teary goodbye. He doesn’t know what’s going on – but I do. But that’s our lot as international cricketers.”On the plus side I get to come here to play in a World Cup, so in 18 years’ time when he is giving me grief for not being there for the first six weeks I’ll be able to say, ‘But I had to go and beat Holland.'”
