Smith hails South Africa's determination

Graeme Smith has hailed South Africa’s determination to bounce back after a fiery Indian start that threatened to take the game away from the visitors

Firdose Moonda in Nagpur12-Mar-2011Five years ago, to the day, South Africa successfully chased 434 to beat Australia at the Wanderers. It was a historic win, featuring the highest run-chase in ODI cricket. It was a day to remember and when Graeme Smith was in the field against India on Saturday afternoon in Nagpur, memories of that game came back to him for all the wrong reasons.”On the bus this morning the team manager said to me it was the anniversary of the 438 game and at one stage I was having nightmares about chasing that,” Smith said. Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar were doing to the South African attack worse than what Adam Gilchrist and Simon Katich did that day in 2006. After 15 overs of that match, Australia were 96 without loss. India reached that point after 11.2 overs and they showed no signs of stopping. While South Africa had a stunned home crowd to deal with in Johannesburg, in Nagpur they had a boisterous Indian crowd, spurring on every run. “We were on the backend of a massive beating,” Smith said. “The noise out there was really intense.” Control was slipping from Smith’s hands and he didn’t know what to do to rein in the run flow. Two overs later, he did the only thing he thought might work and called for a time out.Robin Peterson had an lbw appeal against Sachin Tendulkar, which was clearly missing leg, but Smith asked for the review, not because he thought it was out, but because he felt the team needed a break. “It was really to bring the guys in together. The way Sachin and Viru were playing, it was difficult to connect and regroup.”The South African middle order stepped up at the right time•Associated Press

The team got into a huddle immediately and Smith began instructing. “I said to them: let’s show some composure and focus our heads and maybe we can make up the 30-40 runs extra that we’ve given away.” For the next 15 balls little changed but then the tide started turning. Johan Botha’s ability to turn the game around was on display, and even though the wickets didn’t come for at least another 20 overs the advantage began shifting. In the end, Smith was pleased to report that South Africa felt as though they had “beat our targets by miles,” during the innings break. Dale Steyn, Man of the Match for his 5 for 50, said that after the blitzkrieg South Africa would have been happy with keeping India to 340. “They kept putting up those projected scores and I kept thinking what is going on here,” he said.Steyn has had a particularly successful run in Nagpur, where he took 7 for 51 in a Test match last year and engineered the Indian collapse during the batting Powerplay on Saturday. Smith said the way his bowlers “just hung in there and pounced at the end,” was what pleased him the most about their effort in the field. There may have been some thoughts of South Africa being on too much of a high after their stunning comeback with the ball to focus on their task with the bat, but Smith said the positive vibes pushed them on. “We were on a bit of a momentum shift. We spoke a lot about partnerships and how we wanted to play.”Although the pitch was “not as free-flowing” as the Indian opening pair had made it look, South Africa stuck to the task. Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla laid the foundation, before AB de Villiers put the team on track to get over the line. Still, the untested middle order had to play their part and Smith was glad that their role ended up being vital. “This is massive for them and they would have gained a lot of confidence from this.”It ended up not being as difficult a task as the 434 they had to hunt down five years ago, but the conditions in Nagpur were tough to deal with. Smith said South Africa were careful not to be overawed and wanted to start building a legacy of being competitive in big games and pressure situations. “So many people talk about the privilege of playing in India and it is a privilege. But I also told the team that this is where a team of our quality deserves to play. We wanted to earn respect today and we did that with the way we played and the way we came back.”

Middlesex slide despite Strauss, Rogers hundreds

Glamorgan ended the third day at Lord’s in sight of an innings victory despite battling centuries from Chris Rogers and England Test captain Andrew Strauss

Glamorgan ended the third day at Lord’s in sight of an innings victory despite battling centuries from Chris Rogers and England Test captain Andrew Strauss, which had helped Middlesex temporarily hold a spirited bowling attack, led by the impressive James Harris, at bay. Middlesex, who began their second innings needing to score 373 simply to make Glamorgan bat again, made the visitors toil hard under increasingly cloudless skies but an inspired late spell from Harris yielded two important wickets and left the home side teetering at 293 for 6. Their situation could have been a lot worse, had Glamorgan made the most of the chances that came their way.Though there was no overnight declaration, Glamorgan will have felt that victory was achievable with a day to spare when they arrived at the ground and their belief would have been lifted when Harris removed Scott Newman in the fifth over of the Middlesex innings. While their bowlers were visibly keen, Glamorgan’s fielding was far from perfect, however, and a series of lapses allowed Strauss and Rogers to repair the innings with a 173-run stand that lasted until well into the afternoon. On a pitch that flattened out considerably in the sunshine, neither Harris nor Graham Wagg, who shared the new ball and swung it consistently at a good pace, could force more than the occasional error from the batsmen. Half an hour before lunch, Rogers cracked Wagg in front of square on the leg side and, immediately afterwards, lurched into an extravagant drive at one that left him off the pitch, a thick edge flying low to Bragg’s right at third slip. The chance was spilled, however, and more fumbles were to follow when Strauss, who had just 30 at the time, was put down by Gareth Rees under the helmet at short leg off Will Owen’s bowling. The luck appeared to be entirely on the side of the batsmen, and in the next over – Dean Cosker’s first of the day – Rogers clipped low but in the air towards Wagg at midwicket, but the shot didn’t quite carry to the diving fielder. As the skies cleared and the day began to warm, the batsmen settled and began to score more freely. There are plenty of similarities in Strauss and Rogers’ styles, and they matched each other almost shot for shot to bring up twin fifties off 81 and 89 balls, respectively. It was then that Strauss started to take the initiative, pulling ahead of Rogers and moving on fluently but continuing to ride his luck. Beaten in the flight by Robert Croft as he jumped down the wicket when on 92, he went through with an attacking stroke and lobbed the ball up and over point to move within one stroke of his century. He reached the mark, from 151 deliveries, and promptly edged Cosker past a diving slip fielder as Glamorgan’s shoulders began to sag. They were given a tremendous lift not long afterwards, against the run of play, when Rogers tapped Cosker to Wagg at midwicket and Strauss committed himself to a chancy single. He was sent back late and easily run out as the ball was rocketed back to the bowler with the batsman stranded halfway down the wicket. When Malan got a touch on one from Cosker that held its line, the ball nestling safely in Wallace’s gloves, and Neil Dexter was felled by Owen Middlesex were once again under pressure. Rogers responded with some obdurate batting, and found a willing partner in Jamie Dalrymple, who helped add 60 for the fifth wicket to raise Middlesex’s hopes once more. Rogers raised his first century of the season from 175 balls and began to look increasingly imperious at the crease, particularly on the front foot.It appeared Glamorgan’s cumbersome day in the field would continue into the evening when, with just four overs left in the day, Harris finally found a clean edge off the stubborn Rogers’ bat, but once again Glamorgan’s fielders were found wanting. The chance was parried by Alviro Petersen at first slip, setting off a scramble among the close catchers and wicketkeeper around him, none of whom could hold onto it.The lapse leant a few extra decibels to the level of Harris’s joyous roar when, two balls later, he forced yet another edge and this time Cosker at third slip deflected the chance into Petersen’s waiting hands. It ended a 310-minute vigil from the Australian and just about put paid to Middlesex’s faint hopes of saving this game.A pumped-up Harris got rid of Dalrymple, trapped in front of his stumps, with the first ball of his next over to put himself on a hat-trick. John Simpson defended his first delivery to point to deny Harris the honour, but edged his second just short of third slip in the tense closing moments of the evening. Middlesex’s position wasn’t quite perilous enough for the umpires to grant an extra half-hour of play, but Glamorgan will expect to wrap up a morale-boosting win in the first session on Sunday.

Sussex recover to move top

Sussex Sharks moved to the top of the South Group after recovering from a terrible start to convincingly beat Middlesex Panthers by 49 runs in the Friends Life t20 fixture at Lord’s.The Sharks were 2 for 2 in the second over after Chris Nash and Joe Gatting, who have both struggled for runs in the competition so far, were dismissed for ducks. But solid contributions from their three internationals, Luke Wright, Lou Vincent and Murray Goodwin, allowed them to recover to 165 for 8.When the Panthers were reduced to 61 for 4 halfway through their reply Sussex were on their way to avenging their only defeat so far at Hove last week.A well-grassed pitch played better than it looked but Sussex made a dreadful start with Nash bowled by Steven Crook’s yorker and Gatting pulling tamely to square leg to give Steve Finn the first of two wickets. But Wright and Vincent revived their side with a stand of 69 from 39 balls.Wright, Sussex’s leading scorer in the competition this season, twice cleared the ropes in his 34 off 18 balls before former team-mate Tom Smith turned one past his defences. Vincent made 44 from 32 and also hit two sixes only to be caught off a top-edged sweep and it was left to skipper Goodwin to make sure Sussex maintained their recovery.Goodwin scored 48 off 33 deliveries with four boundaries and a six and it was a surprise when he was foxed by Ryan McLaren’s slower ball, especially as McLaren’s four expensive overs had gone for 43.The Panthers used seven bowlers but a cameo from Rana Naved ul-Hasan, who made 24 from 14 balls, lifted Sussex to a total which they always looked capable of defending given the quality of their bowling attack.Middlesex were hampered by the absence of Chris Rogers, who hurt his hand when he dropped Vincent and was unable to bat, and were struggling on 41 for 4 after 6.1 overs.Paul Stirling cut to point and John Simpson, promoted to open, missed a full toss. Crook carelessly drove at a widish delivery and Dexter gave Monty Panesar a return catch immediately he came into the attack.A fifth-wicket stand of 64 between Scott Newman and Dalrymple kept their hopes alive but the asking rate was climbing all the time. When left-armer Chris Liddle returned to the attack in the 19th over he finished off Middlesex with three wickets in five balls.Liddle cleaned up Newman (44) and claimed Anthony Ireland next ball and although Finn averted the hat-trick he soon gave a tame catch to gully. Liddle finished with 4 for 20 and Middlesex had lost for the fifth time in six games.
