Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir’s prospects of making an India comeback are all but over, as the pair stayed away from selection for the 15-member North Zone squad for the Deodhar Trophy. The team will be led by Harbhajan Singh, and the North Zone selection committee, headed by national selector Vikram Rathour, decided to reward all those who had performed well in the North Zone leg of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.It is believed that Sehwag had told some of the top DDCA officials that he did not want to block the road of promising juniors from Delhi, while the reason for Gambhir opting out is still unclear.”Today, at the start of the selection committee meeting, the chairman Vikram Rathour intimated us that Viru [Sehwag] has specifically told him that he doesn’t want to play Deodhar Trophy,” a member of the North Zone selection committee told PTI. “He has insisted that some of the promising juniors may be picked. Gauti [Gambhir] has also decided against playing but I have no clue about why he pulled out.”There are enough indications that Sehwag and Gambhir are fully aware that there is very little chance for either of them to make the World Cup squad, as India’s three first-choice openers are all in good form, with M Vijay available as cover. In any case, Sehwag and Gambhir’s selection would have come under scanner, as the pair tallied just 122 and 178 runs respectively from five matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, although they did share a 144-run stand to power Delhi to victory against Haryana.The only experienced members in the North Zone side are Harbhajan, Yuvraj Singh, Mohit Sharma and Amit Mishra, with most of the team comprising of youngsters. Former India Under-19 captain Unmukt Chand has also been selected despite a poor run of 36 runs from five matches due to his “promise”. Unmukt had recently scored a century for India A against West Indians in a warm-up game, and is considered to be one for the future, as is Manan Vohra.Pacer Vikas Tokas and batsman Milind Kumar are the other two players from Delhi to make the squad. Punjab youngsters Gurkeerat Singh Mann and Mandeep Singh, and Jammu and Kashmir’s Parveez Rasool have all been selected based on their recent performances. Diante de um elenco enxuto e das dificuldades de contratação do Botafogo, o técnico Eduardo Barroca tem tido, ao menos, um fator para comemorar. As oportunidades aos jogadores da base tem sido uma constante no clube na atual temporada e os garotos não têm desperdiçado as chances. Um deles é o lateral-esquerdo Lucas Barros.

No clube desde os nove anos de idade, Lucas, hoje com 20, já entrou três vezes em campo pelo time principal, duas pelo Brasileirão e uma pela Sul-Americana. Em entrevista à Botafogo TV, o jogador declarou seu amor ao clube que o acolheu ainda um menino, vindo da comunidade Vila Aliança, Zona Oeste do Rio de Janeiro.

–O carinho que tenho pelo Botafogo é coisa de outro mundo. Cheguei aqui com nove anos de idade, como um garoto franzino de comunidade e o clube me acolheu da melhor forma. Aqui é a minha segunda casa. Levo um sentimento de gratidão eterna – disse Lucas.

A identificação com o Alvinegro, segundo Lucas Barros, é um dos motivos pelo qual tem recebido demonstrações de carinho dos torcedores e atenção especial do treinador. Ele também prometeu empenho na briga por títulos com o único clube em que atuou na vida.

– Minha relação com o Barroca é das melhores porque desde quando subi para o sub-20 ele me acolheu muito bem, sempre conversa muito comigo. Cheguei ao clube trazido pela ONG Craques da Vida, que me trouxe para um teste. Desde o dia que cheguei, o Fabão, então preparador físico, comentou que eu era parecido com Maicosuel. Até hoje, poucos funcionários do clube me conhecem como Lucas Barros, sou sempre chamado de Maicosuel ou “Maiquinho” – brincou Lucas.

Diante da saída de Jonathan no início da semana, vendido ao Almería da Espanha, Lucas Barros foi promovido de vez ao time profissional e vai disputar a posição na lateral esquerda com Gilson. O jogador deve estar entre os relacionados de Barroca para enfrentar a Chapecoense, na segunda-feira, pela 16ª rodada do Brasileirão. O jogo será disputado no Nilton Santos, às 20h.

O Flamengo acertou a prorrogação do contrato do meio-campista Hugo Moura. Agora, o jogador de 21 anos tem vínculo com o Rubro-Negro até dezembro de 2023. Formado nas divisões de base do clube, Hugo está integrado ao elenco profissional desde o início da temporada, tendo disputado seis jogos em 2019.

Ao site oficial do Fla, Hugo Moura celebrou a assinatura do novo contrato.

Otago allrounder Bradley Scott was struck on the jaw by the ball, in his followthrough, and had several teeth broken as a result. Central Districts scored a massive 405 for 6 – for the second time in the tournament, against the same opposition – and dismissed Canterbury in 45.2 overs, but after they had scored 353.Central Districts opted to bat and raced to 86 with their openers in 10.5 overs, when Jamie How fell for a 38-ball 64. Worker then put on four more fifty stands – with Ben Smith, Will Young, Kruger van Wyk and Kieran Noema-Barnett. Worker’s fifth List-A hundred, and second on the trot, came off 107 balls and he went on to score the next 94 runs in only 38 deliveries. His hundred saw 16 fours and 10 sixes. Matt Henry was the most expensive bowler, leaking 88 runs in eight overs.Canterbury also saw a rapid opening stand – of 78 runs in 11.1 overs. A ida às últimas consequências para classificar sua seleção à Copa rendeu um dos episódios mais controversos da história do futebol sul-americano. Há 30 anos, o rojão que Rosenery Mello disparouno gramado no Maracanã durante um Brasil e Chile, em partida decisiva pelas Eliminatórias para a Copa do Mundo, culminouem uma farsa nas mãos de Rojas.

– Eu lembro sempre com muita tristeza deste jogo. Sabíamos que era um jogo de risco, a própria Fifa considerou. Por todo ambiente que criaram desde a partida no Chile (empate em 1 a 1). Lá, teve uma verdadeira “batalha campal”, o Romário foi expulso, eles fizeram jogo sujo desde o início. E aqui no Maracanã, quando veio o “foguete”, vi claramente que não atingiu o Rojas. Aquilo ali pareceu programado, foi doloroso – recordou o técnico Sebastião Lazaroni, ao LANCE!.

Naquela edição das Eliminatórias, só se classificava o primeiro de cada chave. Brasil e Chile chegaram à última rodada empatados em números de pontos, mas os canarinhos tinham a vantagem do empate no Maracanã, devido ao saldo de gols superior (11 contra cinco). E o “tempero” ficou ainda maior pelo clima causado no primeiro jogo entre as equipes.

Em 13 de agosto, chilenos e brasileiros se enfrentaram pela primeira vez nas Eliminatórias da Copa do Mundo. A rispidez custou uma baixa à Seleção logo de cara:

– Antes do jogo começar, um chileno deu uma mordida no Romário. Ele se irritou e levou um amarelo. Aí, quando a bola rolou, deram uma falta contra nós e ele foi expulso aos três minutos. Imagina a pressão que foi – detalhou Sebastião Lazaroni.

Logo depois, “La Roja” também teve Ormeño expulso. Em meio ao acirrado embate, a Seleção achou o caminho do gol de maneira curiosa: após jogada de Mazinho, Astengo tentou rechaçar, mas a bola explodiu em González e parou na rede.

Em desvantagem, os chilenos, se lançaram à frente. Meio-campista do Chile, Jorge Aravena lembrou como foi esta partida no Estádio Nacional:

– Foi muito difícil, porque o Brasil esteve muito intenso durante todo o jogo. Para nossa sorte, tínhamos Rojas, que estava muito inspirado. Enfim, foi uma partida eliminatória daqueles tempos, diante de um gigante sul-americano.

‘Eles estavam dispostos a tudo’, detalhou Mauro Galvão

O gol de empate de “La Roja” rendeu muita polêmica:

– O árbitro marcou sobrepasso do Taffarel (a regra, que não existe mais no futebol, não permitia ao goleiro dar mais do que quatro passos com a bola nas mãos). O Taffarel entregou a bola, eles jogaram para o gol e o árbitro validou. Foi muito esquisito! – recorda Silas.

Um dos defensores da equipe canarinha, Mauro Galvão recorda:

-Eles estavam dispostos a tudo. Neste jogo no Chile, torcedores quase derrubaram um policial. No gol deles, cobraram falta em dois toques na área sem a gente armar barreira…

O ex-lateral chileno Alejandro Hisis é sucinto ao lembrar-se do lance que culminou no gol de Basay:

– Foi uma jogada inteligente do meu companheiro.

Após brasileiros e chilenos terem vencido seus respectivos confrontos com a Venezuela, o reencontro estava marcado para 3 de setembro, desta vez no Maracanã.

DOMÍNIO, GOL E APREENSÃO: O CLIMA NO MARACANÃ

Sob expectativa de mais de 130 mil pessoas, a Seleção Brasileira entrou em campo em 3 de setembro no Maracanã em busca da vaga na Copa do Mundo de 1990. Aos poucos, a equipe comandada por Sebastião Lazaroni foi se soltando na marcação e fazendo Rojas se desdobrar para salvar finalizações de Bebeto, Branco e Careca.

– Brasil e Chile era sempre guerra, né? Às vezes, até pior do que contra a Argentina, porque eles eram muito desleais, e a gente já tinha sentido isto na partida de Santiago. Mas estávamos bem confiantes para aquele jogo, a partida era no Maracanã lotado – detalhou o camisa 9.

De tanto rondar a área chilena, a Seleção balançou a rede aos quatro minutos, com Careca:

-O Bebeto, que gostava de voltar um pouco e buscar a bola, girou em cima do volante deles e lançou para mim no momento certo. Eu já “fiz o facão”, fui pelo meio dos zagueiros e chutei. A bola até bateu no Rojas antes de entrar.Foi uma jogada rápida, uma bola perfeita.

‘Foi uma jogada rápida do Bebeto, e eu fui pelo meio dos zagueiros e chutei’, lembra Careca sobre o gol brasileiro

Porém, aos 24 minutos, a euforia pela iminente classificação brasileira passou a dar espaço à tensão. Um sinalizador da Marinha disparado pela torcedora Rosenery Mello caiu na área chilena. O goleiro Rojas desabou em campo e rolou até próximo ao resto do fogo, o que deu a impressão inicial de ter sido atingido pelo artefato.

-Bateu aquele desespero de ficar fora do Mundial, né? Agora, depois foi tudo desmascarado – confessou, 30 anos depois, Careca, que no momento do incidente estava próximo à área chilena.

O jogo foi interrompido aos 28 minutos, com os chilenos saindo de campo e, depois, pleiteando a vaga na Copa de 1990. Mais tarde, a foto de trás do gol apontou que o goleiro não foi sido atingido pelo “rojão”.

Além de ter se cortado com uma gilete que levava no bolso de seu calção, jogaram mercúrio no rosto de Rojas, para simular que seu rosto estava ensanguentado. O Chile teve sua derrota ratificada por 2 a 0 (devido ao abandono do campo).

Roberto Rojas, que era goleiro do São Paulo, foi banido do futebol mas, depois, “anistiado” em 2001, e chegou a trabalhar na comissão técnica e até como treinador do Tricolor paulista, além de ter trabalhado como preparador de goleiros do Sport. Procurado pelo LANCE!, o ex-goleiro não quis dar entrevista.

Porém, em várias declarações que deu durante estes anos, ele comentou de maneira sucinta sobre o episódio:

– Foi um corte à minha dignidade.

‘Rojas pagou da maneira mais dolorosa’, diz chileno Jorge Aravena

O treinador Orlando Aravena, o médico Daniel Rodríguez e o dirigente Sergio Stoppel foram afastados dos gramados. Astengo ficou quatro anos sem atuar.

Um dos poucos ex-jogadores do Chile que quis falar sobre este duelo de 30 anos atrás, Jorge Aravena lembrou sobre “La Roja”:

– Tínhamos uma boa seleção, fizemosjogos disputados com o Brasil. Mas, desgraçadamente, Rojas cometeu este erro. E ele pagou da maneira mais dolorosa, que foi ficar fora dos gramados.

DA CATIMBA AO VIOLÃO: OS ‘CAUSOS’ DE BRASIL x CHILE

As lembranças dos jogos entre Brasil e Chile pelo Grupo 3 ainda são marcantes para quem esteve em campo. O meia Silas, que era colega de Rojas, contou que a confusão após o jogo causou outro “prejuízo” ao colega chileno:

– Ele era meu companheiro de São Paulo, e tinha deixado um violão dele comigo, mas fiquei de entregar no Maracanã. Só que, depois daquela situação toda, o violão sumiu! Até vou aproveitar para pedir, né?! Quem pegou, devolve, porque se não aprendeu até agora, desiste – brinca o ex-meia, que recorda sobre o clima em torno do jogo:

– A gente queria ganhar em campo. Estava “mordido” pelo jogo no Chile, pela catimba deles. Quando veio a história da “fogueteira” pensei: “pô, não vamos ganhar em campo?” (risos). Eu queria jogar até o fim.

Valdo não esquece a catimba do Chile:

– Tinha o Astengo, que foi até meu colega no Grêmio. Era gente boa, mas muito “catimbeiro”. Parava o jogo a qualquer custo.

‘Fiquei de devolver um violão para o Rojas no Maracanã, mas depois da confusão, ele sumiu. Não sei onde o violão está até hoje’, revela Silas

Silas ainda lembra com lamento o episódio envolvendo Rojas:

– Senti muito aquele banimento dele do futebol. É um cara muito bom, a gente entendeu que foi um momento de desespero dele. E o jogo do Chile estava muito “catimbado”, as entradas duras, parecia até premeditada a maneira como os jogadores batiam na gente…

Mauro Galvão enaltece a força do adversário do Brasil:

– Era uma seleção muito boa, tinha um Zamorano, Yañez, Basay, era difícil de conter. Foram dois jogos muito duros. Mas nosso time era bem forte e soubemos nos classificar.

Responsável por jogar o artefato no gramado, Rosenery Mello recebeu o epíteto de “fogueteira” e teve momentos de fama ao posar para a revista masculina “Playboy”. Nos últimos anos de sua vida, morava em Araruama, na Região dos Lagos, no Rio de Janeiro, e comandava um bar. Ela faleceu em 2011, em função de um aneurisma cerebral, aos 45 anos.

A gente tinha uma geração muito forte, com nomes como Astengo, Yañez, Jorge Aravena, Basay, Zamorano. Por isto, fomos com muita confiança para o Maracanã. Acho que dava um “gostinho” a mais este desejo de poder tirar o Brasil da Copa do Mundo.

Fizemos uma grande eliminatória e sabíamos que poderíamos vencer, mesmo que fosse no Maracanã. Em especial, porque já tínhamos derrotado os brasileiros na Copa América de 1987, por 4 a 0.

Naquele momento do incidente, eu estava mais perto do ataque. Minha primeira reação, assim como a de todos os colegas, foi de ver como estava o Rojas, que é meu grande amigo até hoje.

Foi uma lástima terem lançado aquele maldito rojão. Sem dúvida, o Rojas foi o mais prejudicado com aquilo. Afinal, além da nossa eliminação, a geração seguinte do Chile pagou caro por aquele episódio. Não pudemos disputar duas Copas.

Mas claro que, mesmo depois de tudo, minha intenção sempre foi dar apoio ao meu querido amigo. Ele é um dos melhores goleiros que vi. Só cometeu um erro.

A virtual doctor App has been launched by the Professional Cricketers Association to help stressed-out players guard against the risk of mental illness

David Hopps19-Jan-2015Professional cricketers plagued by stress and anxiety can now call up the help of Dr Freeman: a virtual doctor who can provide relaxation techniques to help them cope with the pressure.England players have been regularly struck by stress-related illness, most notably Marcus Trescothick, Mike Yardy and Jonathan Trott. Although all three soon returned to county level, Trescothick and Yardy never recovered their England places and Trott’s attempts to rebuild his career with England Lions have yet to reach fulfilment.Dr Freeman, a virtual bearded doctor who lolls in a deckchair under a palm tree on a tiny island, stars in the Stress Free App launched by the Professional Cricketers’ Association in association with a team of consultant psychiatrists and game developers. They have worked in partnership with Virtually Free to develop an app which teaches four medically proven relaxation techniques which help reduce stress: calm breathing, meditation, deep muscle relaxation and self-hypnosis.The app comes with a journal and allows players to set goals to keep stress-related illness at bay as they cope with the perpetual demands of a congested international calendar.Three England victims

Marcus Trescothick: Returned home from England’s tour of India in February 2006, citing personal reasons. Played throughout the summer, but withdrew from ODIs against Pakistan and asked not to be considered for the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy squad because of a stress-related illness. Included for 2006-07 Ashes in Australia, but returned home before first Test. Pulled out of World Twenty20 squad in 2007 and Somerset’s pre-season tour of UAE a year later. In his autobiography said he had suffered anxiety attacks since the age of 10.
Michael Yardy: Yardy left England’s World Cup squad in Colombo in 2011 due to depression midway through the tournament. Geoff Boycott caused controversy when he tartly suggested that Yardy’s depression may have resulted from his poor form on the field, leading him to be criticised by mental health groups. Yardy returned to action for Sussex six weeks later but has not played for England since.
Jonathan Trott: When Trott abruptly left England’s 2012-13 Ashes tour after the first Test in Brisbane with a stress-related illness, England were left with more soul searching. Director of cricket, Andy Flower, bemoaned the loss of his “rock”. A premature attempt at a comeback at the start of the 2014 season had to be aborted, but he returned strongly towards the end of the season and his form was sufficient to win him a recall as captain of England Lions on a tour of South Africa.

There is a piquancy, whether the developers know it or not, in the Freeman name: George Freeman, regarded by WG Grace as the finest fast bowler he ever faced, was the 19th century forerunner of the fast-bowling greats, a man who could be relied upon to put the batsmen of his era under immense mental and physical strain.Trescothick, who has continued his career with Somerset and underlined his status as one of the most treasured figures on the county circuit, is actively supporting the development of a supportive culture towards stress-related illness.”We want to build a culture that acknowledges that it is OK not to be OK,” he said. “Our aim is to help our members prevent them when possible or seek help in the early stages if not.”We all experience stress and anxiety every day but at times this can be so extreme that it becomes an illness. When it gets to that level it can stop us from getting on with our lives or doing the things we love, like playing cricket,”This app can help de-stress when anxiety is getting on top of us, but they can also help us become more resilient to stress in general. In particular meditation can build our ability to cope with stress.”Just like we take training our body really seriously, ‘Stress Free’ encourages us to practice relaxation skills frequently and train your resilience. You cannot focus on your body and forget your mind.”The ‘Stress Free’ App is the latest initiative from the PCA in putting place measures to help reduce stress-related illnesses.The Dr Freeman app extends the PCA’s work also seen in the Mind Matters tutorial which was launched three years ago and which has had input from a host of former England cricketers troubled by stress-related illness, including Trescothick, Yardy, Tim Ambrose, Graeme Fowler, Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison.Recognition that mental illness was often experienced by those with admirable levels of drive and commitment was a vital part of Trescothick’s recovery.That is reflected in the fact that every professional cricketer in England has also been given a copy of in which Dr Tim Cantopher argues that naturally conscientious people are at greater risk of pushing themselves past breaking point, still seeking high standards when under great stress, where weaker people would simply give up.The PCA Stress Free App can be downloaded here for iPhone and here for Android
