Aarons and Godfrey respond to Bogle’s summer Instagram snap

[ad_pod ]

It’s been a long season for Derby County and even though the last step was not as successful as they would’ve liked, Frank Lampard can be happy with what he has achieved there.

Jayden Bogle was a big part of it, playing a total of 40 games throughout the campaign, even scoring twice and assisting nine goals in the process.

Now, however, Bogle is enjoying his long-awaited holiday at the seaside and his latest Instagram snap has him riding a jet ski, which was, of course, soon enough noticed by some of his fellow rivals and friends.

Max Aarons and Ben Godfrey, both Norwich players and Bogle’s direct rivals, were first to commend the 18-year-old for a rather cool snap and both were there to show support with a series of emojis directed at Derby’s star.

Bogle will be looking to replicate and even improve on the results of last year and if Lampard does end up staying, which is definitely uncertain at the moment, they can always dream of a potential step up.

Carl Jenkinson’s departure would mean the end of an era at Arsenal

[ad_pod ]

According to Sky Sports, Championship side West Brom are in talks with Arsenal over signing out-of-favour right-back Carl Jenkinson this summer.

What’s the word?

The 27-year-old has struggled to get regular first-team football at the Emirates ever since his move from Charlton and it appears he may finally get a permanent move away.

The boyhood Arsenal fan has made no secret of his desire to try and make things work in north London but with interest from Scottish champions Celtic as well as from the Hawthorns, Jenkinson could well have played his final game for the club.

The end of Arsene Wenger’s British core

Aaron Ramsey. Jack Wilshere. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Kieran Gibbs. Carl Jenkinson. When Arsene Wenger proudly announced his ‘British core’ back in 2012, who really could have predicted Jenkinson would be the man to stand tall at the end of it? The stuff of legends.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals he would have snubbed Tottenham for Arsenal if they’d come knocking in 2005…

During Wenger’s reign in charge, the Gunners gradually lost the homegrown identity that had been a staple of their success during the 20th century and became the first team to consistently have a line-up without a single English player. So when the Frenchman assembled that core of players there was a real excitement and a feeling that they would know perhaps more than others what it meant to play for the club.

Instead, the group were a big reason for the Gunners’ decline in the 2010s and really became a symbol of mediocrity. Of those players mentioned, none have really gone on to achieve a career close to superstardom – Ramsey maybe the closest of them all.

Jenkinson played just eight first-team games last season under Unai Emery and became a bit of a parody for Gunners fans. Just how was he still at the club? How had he managed to outlast the others? So if and when Jenkinson does make his permanent departure from Arsenal official this summer, it really will spell the end of an era at the Emirates.

Celtic fans are not enjoying the idea of selling Scott Sinclair for £2m

[ad_pod ]

Celtic fans are not keen on selling Scott Sinclair this summer, after he was linked with a move to English Premier League new boys Sheffield United.

The Scottish Sun reported on Wednesday that the Hoops were willing to sell the winger to the Blades for a fee of around £2m, with Chris Wilder keen on adding the 30-year-old to his squad.

How can Celtic improve next season? A Hoops fan tells us how in the video below…

Sinclair has been one of the most important players at Celtic over the last three seasons, netting 60 goals in total for the club in that period, more than anyone else.

With just a year left on his current contract though, this could be the last opportunity for the Hoops to recoup a transfer fee for the experienced winger.

The reported £2m fee isn’t much in modern football and wouldn’t go far in terms of trying to secure a replacement for the player though.

Arsenal’s Wilfried Zaha’s interest underlines Man United’s transfer woes

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United, a club that once reigned supreme in the Premier League, have seen their dominance cease to nothingness as their neighbours have grown from strength to strength.

United were a staggering 32 points adrift of Manchester City last campaign, failing to win a single trophy while the Citizens completed a domestic treble. Most concerningly, Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side ranked as the division’s 11th best defence.

In light of said decline, the manner in which United have identified a transfer strategy and begun its implementation has been equally refreshing and commendable. As the signings of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka attest, and the potential signings of Harry Maguire, Sean Longstaff and even John McGinn to a lesser degree, United are prioritising promise and determination when seeking prospective transfers.

In the age of heightened and unparalleled inflation in the transfer market – evidenced by United’s decision to spend £50m on a player with a mere total of 42 Premier League appearances – the Red Devils will have to spend big to restructure their squad.

In a side strapped of resolve and clouded by ego, United are rightly seeking the services of tenacious and promising players.

That said, we’ve been here before, haven’t we?

When United signed then 20-year-old Wilfried Zaha from Crystal Palace in 2013, Sir Alex Ferguson earmarked the Ivorian’s potential as a pivotal factor. Upon signing Zaha, the Manchester United great said, as per the BBC,

“We like to sign players with potential. We develop players and that’s been proven many times. Hopefully the boy enjoys it here.”

It’s incredibly difficult to imagine how the winger enjoyed a measly 167 minutes of football in the iconic red shirt of United. In fairness, Ferguson is entirely absolved from blame as Zaha joined the club after the manager had left the club. That said, he was entirely overlooked by David Moyes – earning his only four appearances for the club under the Scotsman – before joining Cardiff in January 2014 for the remainder of the campaign.

As Zaha said himself at the end of the 2013/14 season, David Moyes’ tendency to favour older, more experienced players, left the winger agitated on the sidelines.

He told the Sun (via ESPN), that the Scotsman didn’t trust him, a factor that Zaha considered valuable in Raheem Sterling’s rise at Liverpool, citing Brendan Rodgers’ faith in the young winger.

“I signed for Sir Alex Ferguson and expected him to be the manager. David Moyes arrived and obviously – in general – he had to play older players.

“For some games I was not even on the bench. That was tough, very frustrating. You need the manager to trust you and that was not the case.

“Raheem Sterling went through a tough period at Liverpool and there was talk of him going out on loan. But Brendan Rodgers trusted him and he was allowed to get that experience and pull through.”

If the skilful wideman was overlooked by Moyes, he was scarcely an afterthought for Van Gaal. The Dutchman dismissed Zaha almost instantly as the winger returned to Palace initially on loan, and then subsequently a permanent deal.

And yet, here we are, as United shift their transfer emphasis on signing propitious players, Zaha is touted with a mega-money move to Arsenal.

As the BBC report, Arsenal have submitted an opening offer of £40M for Wilfried Zaha, but Crystal Palace are seeking a fee of £80M to part ways with their star man. The irony is strikingly apparent: as United continue to pursue their list of promising players, one of their former promising stars could be on the cusp of a hefty move.

This isn’t to suggest that Zaha in his current form, having attained five successive seasons of Premier League football, is of corresponding quality to the 20-year-old that arrived at United. However, his importance to Palace and subsequent asking price is reflective of the player that could have been at United.

Perhaps, had Zaha been given sufficient chances at Old Trafford and surrounded by players and facilities of superior quality, the 26-year-old would be even better than he is today.

If anything, the way United failed to utilise Zaha is symptomatic of the club’s issues in recent seasons. Replacing a man of Ferguson’s esteem, a man revered by all in football, would have been a challenging task for most men.

And, perhaps, in hindsight, the club paid too much respect to his opinions by appointing David Moyes as his successor. Nonetheless, United’s untimely demise – although there is seldom a favourable time to demise – has mostly been of their own making via chronic mismanagement stemming from those in the upper echelons of the club’s hierarchy.

While the Wilfried Zaha ordeal is only a microscopic example of a larger and more concerning picture at United, it exemplifies the misdirection that has seen United slump from title favourites to top-four hopefuls.

It’s also likely to resonate with supporters who have become increasingly disillusioned with the running of the club, be that the ever-growing debt accumulated under the Glazers’ ownership or Ed Woodward’s lack of footballing knowhow.

It would be foolish to infer that United’s troubles would be solved had Zaha stayed with the club, but equally, it’s abundantly clear that the Red Devils require a player of his creativity, excitement and expertise – a player that could have saved them a heap of money.

Moyes failed to nurture a prodigious talent when he was right under his nose, and Zaha’s consequential rise into the £80m bracket provides a haunting lesson for the club in an obscenely inflated modern market.

Leeds’ windfall from sales aren’t likely to be reinvested

[ad_pod ]This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…Leeds’ financial worries may be worse than initially thought as two stories that broke on Tuesday state that the club are selling key players in order to comply with financial fair play regulations.

What’s the story?

Last week it was reported that Pontus Jansson would be sold by the Whites due to his disruptive presence in the dressing room.

After signing for Brentford, the Swede contradicted these reports and stated that he was sold due to the Yorkshire club’s need to balance their books for FFP purposes.

Speaking to Aftonbladet, Jansson said: “Leeds needed to sell to get a better balance in the economy because of the Financial Fair Play rules, and then they saw that they could make money from me.â€

The Sun journalist Tom Barclay stated that Kemar Roofe could be sold for the same reasons.

The striker has been linked with a £5m move to Rangers this week, and it looks like Leeds could be forced to sell him.

Won’t be reinvested

Despite reports earlier in the summer stating that the Whites could be working on a sell before they buy policy, it’s hard to see these fees being reinvested if the Yorkshire outfit are cutting it fine with FFP.

We’ve known that Andrea Radrizzani has been operating at a loss as the club lost £4.3m during his first year in charge despite selling Chris Wood for £15m.

It seems that the sale of Wood kept the Whites safe from FFP sanctions. Championship clubs are allowed to lose £39m over a three-year period. Without player sales, they had been operating at a loss of around £20m for 2017/18.

This means that if the Yorkshire outfit continue to lose money at the same rate, they would need to sell at least £7m worth of players each year in order to avoid sanctions.

Last season we saw Ronaldo Vieira sold for £7.7m, and this term we have seen Jack Clarke and Pontus Jansson depart for combined initial fees of £14.5m, but Kemar Roofe may still follow as Leeds have been spending big over the past couple of years.

They’re committed to spending £15m on Helder Costa next summer, and they signed Patrick Bamford in a deal worth up to £10m.

This type of spending may have to stop though, as it seems the Whites are on the brink of being handed an FFP sanction.

Leeds can become even stronger with mature Bamford

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

When Patrick Bamford arrived from Middlesbrough in a deal worth up to £10m last season you’d be forgiven for thinking the talented forward would score more than nine goals.

In truth, his debut campaign at Elland Road was a bit of a disappointment.

He spent much of the first half of the season on the treatment table before the second half of the term was dominated by controversy.

Against Aston Villa, the 25-year-old decided to throw himself to the ground after an incident with Anwar El Ghazi, although replays indicated he hadn’t been touched.

However, after serving a ban, he was then booked for diving against Derby in the play-offs.

For all his talent, his ability to do something daft was tarnishing his reputation.

On the chalkboard

Bamford was one of the few seasoned professionals to actually make Leeds’ 16-man tour squad for Australia.

However, recent comments from the former Chelsea man suggest that he could be about to turn his reputation around for the better.

Per quotes from the BBC, he was concerned about changing the minds of doubters. He said:

“Once I’ve put that in people’s minds it’s going to be hard to change that.

“It’s something I’ve got to do over the next few years. Looking back, I regret it. I maintain he touched me but I milked it and made a stupid deal of it.

“I wouldn’t do it again and it’s something I have to learn from.”

After the incident with El Ghazi, Bamford appeared to show no remorse considering his dive in the play-offs too, yet this is a huge indicator that he has found a greater sense of maturity, which can only help Leeds’ cause.

The 2018/19 campaign will have come as a major frustration for the striker who failed to live up to expectations, making a name for himself by playacting rather than for finding the back of the net.

However, with this fresh and mature approach from the Leeds man, he can make not only himself a better footballer, but he can also help Bielsa’s side go to the next level too.

After all, this is someone who once scored 17 goals in the second tier of English football for Boro.

It’s those heights which he’ll hope to replicate and after seemingly discovering a higher level of maturity, perhaps Bamford is now in a place to deliver it once again.

It’s now down to his own mind and Bielsa to keep him in check.

Manchester United fans react to update on future of Harry Maguire

[ad_pod ]

The ball is well and truly in your court now, United and City. Both Manchester clubs have been hell-bent on signing Leicester star Harry Maguire this summer in an epic tussle for the centre-back’s signature, and it appears it could be set to drag on until the very end of the transfer window.

Reports had suggested in recent weeks that United had not given up their chase of the 26-year-old after being quoted an extraordinary fee, but it appears the Red Devils will not be able to convince the Foxes to compromise just yet.

In an update from The Telegraph, having told Leicester that he wants out this summer, Brendan Rodgers’ side are understood to have acquiesced to the defender’s request as long as any interested sides pay between £80m and £90m to sign him.

The report claims that Maguire will not attempt to force through a move away and that United are currently “still some way” from agreeing a deal.

After hearing that it would take a world-record fee for a defender to sign Maguire, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the matter and many were rather concerned by having to pay such an amount.

Many Red Devils supporters insisted that the potential deal would not represent value for money, and urged the club to turn their attentions elsewhere.

Check out some of the stunned reaction of United fans below:

Arsenal star Ainsley Maitland-Niles hailed by former Gunners striker

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking to 888sport, former Arsenal striker Jeremie Aliadiere has hailed Ainsley Maitland-Niles and revealed that the midfielder’s versatility is “priceless” to the team.

What did he say?

The Gunners academy product was predominantly used by Unai Emery as a right-back or a right wing-back last season following the long-term injury suffered by Hector Bellerin.

The Englishman has also previously played as a left-back and further forward in midfield and out wide, and his versatility was praised by Aliadiere.

Watch Arsenal Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He said: “I rate Maitland-Niles really highly. With injuries last season it’s been tough for him on that level but he’s got all the attributes to become a top player.

“I think this season could be really big for him because it looks like Arsenal doesn’t have a lot of money to spend so I’m sure they will be counting on him. I like the fact that he’s so versatile and technically he’s very good and confident on the ball. The fact that Maitland-Niles can play anywhere makes him priceless to the team.”

An unsung hero

For someone who remains only 21, Maitland-Niles has proven himself to be mature way beyond his years. The England U21 international has time and time again answered the call for the team, and put himself in difficult situations for the greater good.

He coped admirably in an unfamiliar right-back role last season, and did so with little complaint. There were very few occasions where Maitland-Niles came in for criticism, despite the shoddy state of the defence as a whole, and that is a credit to his performances and commitment to the cause.

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that first-team regular Bellerin will miss the opening games of the Premier League campaign, and so it appears Maitland-Niles will once again have to fill in for his fellow teammate. As the Gunners’ leadership is questioned through captain Laurent Koscielny’s actions, one man whose heart cannot be debated is Maitland-Niles, and that is something to cherish.

Aston Villa revisiting Neal Maupay could ease the pressure on Wesley

[ad_pod ]This article is part ofÂFootball FanCast’sÂTransfer FocusÂseries, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…According to Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett, Aston Villa’s transfer activity in this window is far from done with deadline day rapidly approaching as it is thought the club could revisit a previous target in Brentford’s Neal Maupay.

What’s the word?

Villa boss Dean Smith has signed no fewer than 12 new players for a combined fee totalling well over £120m – and it appears their business isn’t over yet as Dorsett reports they still have a number of targets in mind.

One of which is Maupay, who Smith knows all too well having been the man to bring the Frenchman to England in the summer of 2017.

The 22-year-old has made 95 appearances at Griffin Park, scoring 41 goals as well as laying on 14 assists after joining from Saint-Etienne in a £1.6m transfer.

Rumours linking Villa to the Brentford ace have been circulating all summer with it likely to rumble on until deadline day on Thursday.

It is thought that Brentford would be after £20m for their goal-laden striker.

The club have already broken their record transfer fee by bringing Wesley Moraes to Villa Park from Club Brugge for a fee of £22m.

Can the pressure be eased on Wesley?

Villa could do with adding another option up front before the start of the Premier League season.

Aside from Wesley, their attacking fortunes lie in the hands of Jonathan Kodjia and Scott Hogan. The former has given the club a decent return in the Championship, ignoring the 2017-18 campaign where he was often absent through injury.

He’s scored 47 goals in 139 appearances in the second division and at the age of 29, that may well be his level.

Hogan, on the other hand, struggled to break into Villa’s squad – making just six substitute appearances – and was sent out on loan to promotion winners Sheffield United, where he also failed to get much game time, starting just five matches.

Villa will need an additional striker to either play back-up to Wesley or partner him up top next season and Maupay seems like an ideal candidate.

Last season, he bagged one less than Villa’s loan star Tammy Abraham with 25 goals in the Championship.

Watch Aston Villa Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

It will be Wesley’s first season playing in England let alone the Premier League and if you add to that the weight of being the club’s record transfer, there will certainly be a lot of pressure on the young 22-year-old.

Whether he can handle it or not remains to be seen but his transition can be aided by bringing in someone of Maupay’s quality.

He may lack Premier League experience too but he has been in England for two years now and has shown that he’s capable of adapting to new conditions.

In his first season at Brentford, he scored 13 goals in 46 appearances which was also his first venture outside of his home country.

The former France U21 international is a viable option in his own right too. The aforementioned goals return only goes some way in proving that.

At 5 foot 7, he would be a nice compliment to the 6 foot 3 Wesley or even a ‘plan B’ option.

Manchester United may regret not signing a bona-fide playmaker this summer

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

So after a summer transfer window in which Manchester United were linked to what quite possibly could have been every player on planet Earth, the Red Devils failed to end up signing someone in arguably the most crucial of positions. The number ten.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were linked with late moves for the likes of Christian Eriksen, Paulo Dybala and Bruno Fernandes, amongst others, but failed to see a deal materialise before the window shut. The club still have a few options to play in that all-important role just behind the striker, but there are certainly caveats with a number of them.

Paul Pogba – arguably United’s best man for the job – could still yet leave due to the transfer deadlines in other European leagues closing later, Jesse Lingard remains a picture of inconsistency, and Juan Mata is well past his best.

[ad_pod ]

Reports in recent weeks have claimed that Solskjaer is keen to implement a high-intensity approach and a desire to press from the front. The number ten often plays a crucial role in how that system potentially takes effect; when the ball is there to be won, the midfielder can push on alongside the striker to pressure the centre-backs, whilst when possession is too difficult to regain immediately, they can drop back and help form a more compact shape.

Landing someone like Eriksen – who averaged an impressive 1.2 tackles per game in the Premier League last season – would have gone some way to helping United’s new approach.

Forgetting the defensive aspect, creativity is in rather short supply given United’s current make-up in midfield. Not one player managed ten assists in the Premier League last season, with Pogba managing nine and both Lingard and Mata recording a measly two. On the other hand, Eriksen registered an impressive 12. Having a playmaker who can dictate the tempo and have the ingenuity to unlock packed defences is something United simply struggled with last season.

In those tight, high-pressure games where a moment of magic is needed, Solskjaer may regret not dipping into the transfer market and buying a bona-fide star in that heavily influential number ten role.
