Man Utd stars reply to Mata’s Instagram snap after contract renewal

[ad_pod ]

It’s finally official – Juan Mata has signed a new contract with Manchester United that will see him prolong his stay at Old Trafford until June 2021.

The midfielder and the club both confirmed it and it has already found its way onto social media as Mata posted an

/By5dq1FIKHk/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram snap to celebrate this huge deal. Of course, club stars and his teammates were quick to congratulate him with a sea of replies below the image.

Mata has been a part of the red side of Manchester since January 2014 when he joined from Chelsea. The Spanish midfielder has managed 45 goals and 37 assists in 218 appearances for the Red Devils. It’s safe to say that his teammates were thrilled with this news.

Last season, Mata was also a big part of his coach’s plans. He managed fewer appearances with 22 but compensated with a good return of three goals and four assists.

This contract is a big sign of faith and goodwill from the club since by the time June 2021 arrives, Mata will already be 34 years old. But you know what they say – form is temporary, class is permanent.

Crystal Palace: Potential Andros Townsend exit shouldn’t even be considered

There are certain downsides to boasting some o the league’s best for a mid-table club like Crystal Palace in your ranks. Indeed, clearly, Roy Hodgson is learning this the hard way, as the big guns are reportedly trying to pry away the prized pillars of his success at the club.

If he wasn’t worried enough concerning wantaway Wilfried Zaha’s seemingly unclear future, now his other wing-wizard is also apparently attracting interest from Premier League rivals. That’s because, according to reports (via the Daily Mirror at the start of this month), Leicester City are aiming to tempt Andros Townsend away from the Eagles in order to add some magic to their evolving attack.

While Zaha was the star package in Hodgson’s system last season, Townsend provided that cutting edge from the other wing. Though he can obviously prove to be painfully frustrating at times, the right-winger’s incisiveness and impressive dribbling ability is another layer to one of the best counter-attacks in England.

Right now, Brendan Rodgers is probably in need for decent wingers to help the Foxes’ attacking play, but the 27-year-old’s departure could be disastrous for Palace. If they end up losing their winning combination in Zaha-Townsend, things will go back to square one for Hodgson.

Seriously, what’s the point in Palace without Zaha and Townsend? Without them, the team is utterly dull and devoid of anything going forward at all. Harsh but, in our minds, true.

Networking: Wolves fans comment on Matt Murray training ground incident

[ad_pod ]

Former footballer Matt Murray spent ten seasons as a professional at Wolves but has now found himself at the centre of some controversy within the club.

After becoming a registered intermediary with Unique Sports Management, Wolves have adjudged him to overstep the line following attempts to recruit players for his agency at the training ground canteen.

Per The Daily Mail, they’ve told him not to exploit his access after having free reign of the place following his retirement.

It seems a bizarre situation but Wolves supporters have been reacting on Twitter, offering their thoughts on what’s occurred.

One fan made reference to Jorge Mendes, who has a number of their players on his books already, suggesting Murray was stepping on his turf.

Another claimed that harassing players at training may not be the best of ideas. However, a further member of the Molineux faithful couldn’t see what was wrong with it.

The ex-goalkeeper had to cut short his playing days at just the age of 29 following injury and since hanging up his gloves has also made a living through punditry.

The Daily Mail claim that Murray still retains a good relationship with Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell despite the events.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Aarons the wrong Tottenham target this summer

[ad_pod ]

BBC journalist David Ornstein has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in the possibility of signing Norwich City defender Max Aarons, per Radio Five Live.

What’s the word?

Spurs are reportedly keen to bring in a number of players this summer as Mauricio Pochettino looks to revamp his squad.

Aarons enjoyed a breakthrough season at Carrow Road, playing 43 times in all competitions as Daniel Farke’s men sealed a return to the Premier League.

And he could well be on his way to Spurs if one of Kieran Trippier or Serge Aurier is sold this summer; Football Italia report claims from Valter De Maggio that Napoli are interested in signing the England international.

Ornstein said: “Right-back is an area (they could strengthen).

“If they were to lose one of their right-backs, they’re keen on Max Aarons, the Norwich right-back, 19-years-old, he’s had a fantastic season at Carrow Road.”

Spurs were also linked with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, of Crystal Palace, as they look to sign a new defender this summer.

Indeed, The Sun claimed in March that the club were interested in the Eagles star as they look to offload both Trippier and Aurier.

A significant downgrade

Signing Aarons is fine for the future but Spurs will need a first-choice right-back if both Trippier and Aurier are allowed to leave, otherwise Pochettino may be forced to trust Kyle Walker-Peters in the role.

Aarons is actually three years younger than Walker-Peters and therein lies the rub; a move for Wan-Bissaka makes a great deal more sense.

The latter at least has Premier League experience and can point to his previous performances at Selhurst Park as the reason behind Spurs’ pursuit.

Aarons, as it stands, is nothing more than potential.

And if Spurs are to progress and break through the glass ceiling in the Premier League, they need the finished article.

Move him on: Man City are wrong to stick by Benjamin Mendy

[ad_pod ]

According to Sky Sports, Manchester City have decided not to pursue a new left-back this summer and will be sticking with Benjamin Mendy, following Pep Guardiola’s comments earlier in the season suggesting that he may look to reinforce the position.

What’s the word then?

Well, Mendy arrived at the Etihad Stadium as one of the hottest players in his position in world football, signing in a £52m deal from Monaco back in 2017.

However, since then, the World Cup winning Frenchman has managed to make just 14 Premier League starts for the Citizens after suffering two serious knee injuries – he ruptured his cruciate ligament in his debut campaign, and then suffered meniscus problems in the other knee earlier this term.

Who would win out of Man Utd’s treble winners and Man City today? Fans discuss in the video below…

Despite that, the 24-year-old has still looked a cut above whenever he has made it out onto the field, where his tendency to overlap and whip devilish balls into the box has caused all sorts of problems for opposition defences.

He should be moved on

Having said the above, Manchester City are wrong to back their £52m asset.

Mendy has caused Guardiola all sorts of problems since arriving in the Premier League, ranging from him being extremely late for important physio sessions, to him allegedly travelling to Hong Kong despite telling Guardiola that he was going to Barcelona.

He has also been pictured out partying in the early hours of the morning, a situation which prompted the line “I’m not his father” from Guardiola when asked about it.

If City were visibly struggling without one of Europe’s best left-backs, then yeah, definitely keep him around.

However, they are not. Barring any slip-ups, they look set to defend their Premier League title and are on course for a domestic treble, with the ever dependable Oleksandr Zinchenko impressing at left-back in this campaign and the last.

Whilst his stock is still relatively high, City shouldn’t be giving their backing to a man they cannot rely on.

West Ham fans react to ‘magic carpet’

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United supporters have reacted with sarcasm to the laying of the Claret ‘carpet’ surrounding the pitch at the London Stadium.

The club, per Football.London, are looking to unveil the carpet against Leicester City this weekend when the two sides meet in the Premier League.

A green cover was initially installed to hide the running track when the Hammers moved into the stadium back in 2016.

But that has now been changed as the Irons look to bring more identity into their ground.

The carpet features Hammers branding as well as being the same colour as the club’s home shirt.

Football.London report that the previous cover had actually been deemed unsafe and that the Irons’ owners, David Sullivan and David Gold, essentially had no choice but to replace it.

The unveiling has led to much mirth and sarcasm around the fanbase, with several green patches still visible, and many wondering if it will have any tangible effect on matters on the pitch.

Take a look at the best of the reaction below!

The Chalkboard: Alberto Moreno should be trusted to play against Porto

[ad_pod ]

With Andy Robertson set to sit out Liverpool’s quarter-final tie against Porto tonight due to suspension, the most likely replacement for the Scotsman is James Milner, who, as we all know, is versatile enough to fill in at left-back.

The 33-year-old midfielder spent the entirety of the 2016/17 campaign playing in that position, although when the Reds welcome Porto to Anfield, he should not be given the nod to line up on the left of defence.

Instead, a quite unpopular figure on Merseyside should come in: Alberto Moreno.

Mo Salah has been brutally mocked for his recent diving antics in a new video by 442oons. Check it out below…

The Spaniard has endured an error-ridden time at the club since arriving from Sevilla back in 2014 in a £12m deal. Moreno often lacks the concentration required at the top level, something which has upset the Liverpool fanbase who demand their players to be switched on and full of desire.

However, what the 26-year-old is good at is bombing forward and contributing in the final third – it is why Barcelona are reportedly interested in snapping him up as Jordi Alba’s understudy when Moreno’s contract expires this summer.

Additionally, it is worth noting that Moreno has never really been afforded a run in the team whilst Virgil van Dijk has been at the club. The Dutchman has completely transformed the Reds’ previously flimsy backline into the Premier League’s best this season, and appears to instil confidence and belief in his fellow defenders.

The impact of the full-backs has been a huge feature under Jurgen Klopp this season, and it would be detrimental to put the slower, less attack-minded Milner in as a replacement for Robertson, a player who is the polar opposite in terms of his willingness to get forward.

For example, when the former Leeds United man had to step in and replace Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back for two games towards the end of January, Liverpool looked toothless and recorded disappointing 1-1 draws against Leicester and West Ham – the athleticism and attacking play from the full-backs is pivotal in getting results.

Moreno may have a mistake in him, but his similarities to Robertson going forward will be vital if Liverpool are to gain a stranglehold of this tie early on – with Van Dijk assisting him in defence, it is worth playing the Spanish ace for what he contributes going forward.

Leave him in Naples: Liverpool fans aren’t keen on move for Lorenzo Insigne

[ad_pod ]Liverpool fans have been discussing the prospect of Lorenzo Insigne arriving at Anfield on Twitter, with the majority in a pessimistic mood regarding a move for the diminutive forward. The Italian international has spent his entire senior career with Napoli having come through the youth ranks with the Naples-based club, but his future is somewhat unclear after his agent, Mino Raiola, reportedly offered him to both Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.Are the media letting Jurgen Klopp off lightly for his lack of silverware? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…After catching wind of this news, Liverpool fans have been in hot debate over whether or not the 27-year-old would be a good fit at Anfield.Insigne has hit 13 goals and recorded six assists across all competitions this season, impressing in yet another campaign for the Serie A side.

One thing that the Reds are in need of is some quality depth to support the attacking trident of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, and Insigne would certainly provide that for Jurgen Klopp.

Having said that, supporters of the Premier League title hopefuls on Twitter are bullish regarding the prospect of seeing Insigne in a red shirt…

Marcelo Bielsa must bring Luke Freeman to Elland Road

Marcelo Bielsa continues to make Leeds fans dream as promotion to the Premier League is very much in their sights, which is hard to believe when you consider the position they found themselves in under the likes of Paul Heckingbottom and Thomas Christiansen last season.

Interestingly, Leeds United fans are now fully aware of Samu Saiz’s intentions as he reportedly wants to move to another club in Spain if Getafe opt against signing him permanently, so a summer replacement could be required.

And, much to the delight of supporters, it appears as if the Whites already have their sights set on a possible replacement for the Spaniard, as according to talkSPORT, Leeds United are interested in QPR’s Luke Freeman but any potential deal could depend on whether Bielsa’s side secure promotion to the Premier League.

Leeds can kill two birds with one stone by bringing Freeman to the club as he could easily replace Saiz at the heart of the attack, with his pace, creativity and finishing ability making him a very similar player. Also, the Englishman has been a constant threat in the final third having produced nine goals and six assists in all competitions and could provide that extra bit of quality that would be required to unlock some of England’s best defences in the top-flight.

Many fans have been pleasantly surprised by Tyler Roberts’ performances in recent times, but Luke Freeman is naturally creative and deserves a step up. Although, the QPR star upset Leeds fans towards the end of last month as he dented their promotion hopes slightly by netting the winner at Loftus Road.

Leeds United fans, do you think Luke Freeman could do a job at Elland Road if you get promoted?
