Leicester: Brendan Rodgers reignites interest in John McGinn after failing to sign him at Celtic

Aston Villa ace John McGinn is on Leicester’s radar this summer as Brendan Rodgers reignites his interest in the Scot.

According to The Sunday Times (via The Boot Room), the Foxes are eyeing up the midfield talent as the transfer window creeps up. Rodgers is reportedly looking to sign the player on whom he missed out during his time with Celtic.

Villa were dealt a huge blow in December after McGinn suffered a fractured ankle in a Premier League match against Southampton.

Before his injury, the 25-year-old was enjoying a solid performance despite Villa struggling in a relegation battle. McGinn currently has three goals and two assists in the Premier League from the middle of the park, which are solid numbers given the club’s current situation (via Transfermarkt).

Prior to McGinn’s move to England in 2018, Rodgers was looking to poach the playmaker from rival Scottish side Hibernian. He missed out on his signature after Villa snubbed the move, offering the midfielder a four-year deal (via BBC Sport). It seems that the Irishman’s interest in McGinn didn’t go away and he is once again a target for the 47-year-old ahead of the transfer window.

If Aston Villa are to face the drop this season, it’s likely that high-profile players will want to leave the ship before it sinks. Jack Grealish is on the radar of a lot of Premier League clubs, including Manchester United. McGinn could also be looking for a move should the worst come for the Midlands side.

Leicester could be an ideal destination for the Scotland international. The Foxes have had a blistering 2019/20 season, going toe-to-toe with Manchester City as they challenge for second place in the table. Champions League football is a very hard lure to turn down and McGinn could be tempted by the opportunity to face some of the world’s best players in that competition.

Under new management and with world-class players around him, the 25-year-old should thrive. He could also slot in as a replacement for James Maddison, who has been linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium with big interest surrounding his name this summer.

McGinn’s Transfermarkt value is currently £14.4m, which could predict a similar asking price should Villa suffer relegation.

Transfers that shook the club: Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nuno Espirito Santo

In our Transfers that shook the club feature, Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at deals that had many may not have seen coming and the impact that they had during their time by using statistical data and pundit remarks.

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo back in May 2017 was a bold move given that he had pedigree with European names like Valencia CF and FC Porto, and then decided to take on the job of managing the Midlands club in the EFL Championship.

In the 2016/17 season prior to his switch, the 46-year old guided Porto to second in the Primeira Liga, just six points off of Benfica. Nuno also took Porto through the UEFA Champions League group stages before eventually losing out 3-0 on aggregate to Italian giants Juventus, according to Transfermarkt.

To make the drop from Champions League to Championship football could have easily affected him, but the Portuguese manager did not seem fazed as he made sure that Wolves gained promotion in his debut campaign, finishing as champions on a rather impressive 99 points, nine clear of their nearest challengers, as per Sports Mole.

Upon his arrival, director Jeff Shi lauded him, claiming that he ‘was impressed by his football tactics’ (via BBC). Indeed, Nuno did not disappoint him in his first term, and went on to achieve arguably bigger things in the Premier League. WWFC finished in a highly commendable 7th place on 57 points having just come up, and qualified for the UEFA Europa League the following season due to their league position.

Still in European competition and going one better by staying in 6th position so far in the top flight table this campaign, the Molineux outfit could perhaps qualify for the Champions League, which would put the icing on Nuno’s cake.

It was a bold move to appoint him, but he has definitely shook Wolves for the better.

Wanderers, can you can qualify for the Champions League under Nuno? Comment below!

Man Utd fans hammer Anthony Martial after anonymous display against Everton

Having started the campaign in fine fettle with two goals and an assist in Manchester United’s first three Premier League games of the season, Anthony Martial endured some wretched luck by suffering a hamstring injury.

It kept him out for the best part of a couple of months, and having returned in the 1-1 draw against Liverpool, he has been given the number nine role by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But whilst he has shown flashes of what he can do since his injury comeback – his goal against Partizan Belgrade at Old Trafford was something special – he has struggled to find consistency in front of goal.

He has found the back of the net just once in his last six games in the top-flight, and he drew yet another blank against Everton on Sunday afternoon. And as per Sofascore, he produced a virtually anonymous display, not having a single shot on target, and winning just three of his eight total duels. After watching his performance, United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their frustrations with the France international.

A few fans were very critical of his laziness, claiming that his work-rate isn’t up to scratch, with one supporter in particular also taking aim at his poor attitude.

Consistency appears to be the big question mark surrounding Martial, and on the evidence of his performance against Everton, it’s something that is still significantly plaguing him. With the emergence of Mason Greenwood – scorer of the equaliser against the Toffees from off the bench – the Frenchman has more competition for his place up front now.

Meanwhile, Manchester United fans have slammed this star after his performance against Everton.

Manchester City: Simon Jordan criticises UEFA as City look set to escape Champions League ban

Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has criticised Manchester City and the football authorities as the Premier League champions look set to escape a ban from the Champions League despite breaking Financial Fair Play rules.

In May, UEFA launched an investigation into allegedly being misled with regards to the calculation of City’s finances, with the club appearing to break even by inflating the cost of a sponsorship deal.

According to The Athletic, UEFA are merely preparing to fine the Premier League club, despite fining City £49m for a previous breach of regulations back in 2014.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Jordan attacked the unwillingness of UEFA to throw the book at City, arguing that football is not operating in the way it should.

He said: “I admire Manchester City on the pitch, I admire a lot of their commitment to the community with the regeneration surrounding the stadiums and their investment in their academy, and I know they’ve been very influential all around the area.

“I’ve also likened them to a bit of a Frankenstein club, because I don’t like the way they just seem to buy everything and have this Middle Eastern money behind it.

“The idea that football won’t regulate itself, won’t control the very rules that it seeks to impose – I think they will be forced to now, because it is becoming a very divisive subject.

“Why should the world’s biggest, most influential sport seem to think that it can operate in a way that other sports don’t think that you should operate?”

There may be an element of jealousy from Jordan given City’s riches, but his disappointment over their rather lenient impending fine is more than justified.

Jordan continued to touch on other sports’ handling of similar matters, and brings to mind the recent case of Premiership Rugby side Saracens, who were docked 35 points and fined for breaching salary cap rules – a punishment some thought was not enough.

So for City to simply be let off without a European ban – despite AC Milan suffering such a punishment this year – will surely only add insult to injury for the likes of Jordan.

City fans, has your team got off lightly? What would be the potential damage of a Champions League ban? Let us know your thoughts below!

Man Utd fans fearing the worst over Carabao Cup draw against Colchester

After knocking out Chelsea in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, Manchester United may have been hoping to avoid some of the remaining Premier League big-hitters for the next round.

Arch-rivals Manchester City and Liverpool had similarly progressed thanks to wins over Southampton and Arsenal respectively, whilst Everton and Aston Villa were also in the mix.

Instead, in the draw for the quarter-finals on Thursday morning, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side received a massive slice of luck. The Red Devils were handed a home tie against Colchester United, with the winners heading onto the semi-finals stage.

After hearing of who they had gotten in the next round of the competition, United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the matter.

Whilst there may have been an expectation that supporters of the Manchester side would have been absolutely delighted by what had transpired, that did not appear to be the case with some sections of the support.

A few Red Devils fans appeared to fear the worst, and suggested that they will now be heading out of the League Cup in embarrassing fashion.

Leeds snapping up Aaron Hickey would bode well for Marcelo Bielsa’s plans

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

It’s possible we’re reading too much into this, but you never know, it’s possible that news like this indicates the start of something.

What’s the story?

According to a report in The Sun On Sunday (print edition, Page 65, 20/10), Leeds United are one of a number of clubs in the hunt for Hearts’ 17-year-old left-back Aaron Hickey.

They face some stiff competition though, with Manchester City and QPR both reportedly interested in him as well.

Despite his young age, Hickey has tied down a place in the Hearts starting eleven, having played in all bar one of their games so far this season, the lone exception being when he served a one-game suspension having been sent off on the opening day of the campaign.

An eye on the future?

As we covered in a recent edition of Transfer Focus when discussing Leeds’ pursuit of Billy Gilmour, bringing in a young player presents risks on both sides of the argument.

Either the young one coming in has his path blocked by the elder statesmen of the team, or he slots in and stunts the growth of other academy players coming through.

However, with Hickey only being 17, there’s the argument to be made that he won’t need to be rushed into the first team just yet, thus presenting him with a potential chance in the youth team.

Rather crucially, what this rumour does show is that Marcelo Bielsa is possibly laying the groundwork to be here for a very long time.

Players like Rafa Mujica and Liam McCarron arrived in the summer while giving consistent game time to players such as Jamie Shackleton in the academy gives the impression that he is very much interested in building something at Leeds.

That can also be seen by handing places on the bench to Robbie Gotts and Leif Davis too.

This can only go down as a positive thing. If experienced players were all he was targeting, you could make a case that the Argentine sees this as a three or four-year thing before moving on elsewhere.

Whilst long stints at clubs like Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger are rare these days, who’s to say how long the tenure at Elland Road can last?

After all, achieving promotion would certainly help Leeds’ bid to keep him.

Newcastle fans are pleased Jeremy Corbyn has called out Mike Ashley’s ownership

Jeremy Corbyn has hit back at Newcastle after the club responded to his comments criticising Mike Ashley, and Magpies fans are loving his stance.

The Labour leader spoke about protecting football clubs as they are “an institution at the heart of communities”, and targeted Ashley as an example of a billionaire owner who was “ruining our national game”.

Newcastle have defended themselves, pointing to their strong financial record and sustainable method of running the club, stating that other clubs are more guilty of improper practice.

However, Corbyn took to Twitter to thank the club for sharing his quotes about Ashley ruining football, and many of the Newcastle faithful are pleased with the development.

Some are happy to see the 70-year-old show support to a fanbase which has opposed their owner for years, whilst one fan is happy that his message has helped to shine a spotlight on what some Magpies feel is insufficient ownership.

Here is some of the reaction from Newcastle fans, with many backing what Corbyn has said.

Everton must sign Moussa Dembele in January to get out of trouble

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

In recent reports from Football Insider, Everton are set to make a January move for current Lyon striker Moussa Dembele now the club have dropped into the relegation zone after just eight games.

What’s happened this season?

The Toffees have been woeful in front of goal this term, with the club scoring just six times in the Premier League – the third-lowest across the competition. On the forward line, Marco Silva has been left red-faced as Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison, and Bernard remain the only players to hit the back of the net in the Premier League so far.

Other forwards such as Theo Walcott and Cenk Tosun have more than struggled in recent times, whilst summer signing Moise Kean has not even looked like scoring, averaging just 1.1 shots per game in the league for his new side.

Despite Kean scoring six times in 13 Serie A games for Juventus during the previous campaign, expecting a 19-year-old to copy his form from a championship-winning side with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, to Everton, was a long shot. And whilst he may come good, they can no longer wait for this to happen, with an early relegation scrap their main concern now.

Elsewhere, it is important to also remember that whilst Calvert-Lewin may have two goals so far in the league, the 23-year-old has an alarming 21 goals in 102 appearances for the Toffees in total, which translates to a goals per game ratio of just 0.2.

Is Dembele the answer?

Everton need a goalscorer, and the 6-foot Frenchman has continued to smash in the goals back in his homeland having left Scotland with 51 goals in 94 appearances for Celtic. This season alone, the former Fulham man has netted six times in eight games in Ligue 1, putting him joint-second in the race for Golden Boot.

In the last campaign, Dembele bagged an impressive 15 league goals over 33 games for Lyon, in what was his debut season at the club. As time goes on and as he continues to grow as a central striker, it seems that the ex-Celtic man is only going to improve.

In today’s transfer climate, a move for a prolific 23-year-old striker would be far from cheap, considering Ayoze Perez joined Leicester City for £30m having only scored 20 league goals in 78 games for Newcastle over two years.

There is also the matter that Dembele is playing Champions League football with Lyon, which may force the Toffees to throw in a little more cash than usual to prize him away. But whatever the price tag, Marcel Brands should seriously consider this French star to bring them out of the drop zone.
