Duckett ton gives Lancashire the runaround

A brilliant century from opener Ben Duckett ensured Northamptonshire enjoyed a productive day against LV= County Championship Division Two leaders Lancashire at Old Trafford

ScorecardBen Duckett dominated the first two sessions of the match with a fluent hundred•Getty ImagesA brilliant century from opener Ben Duckett ensured Northamptonshire enjoyed a productive day against LV= County Championship Division Two leaders Lancashire at Old Trafford.Twenty-year-old Duckett struck 134 off 151 balls as the visitors recovered from the loss of Kyle Coetzer in just the second over of the game to reach a commanding total of 388 for 6 at the conclusion of a tough three sessions for the home side.Alex Wakely and Richard Levi chipped in with half-centuries while Northants will be confident of gaining maximum points on Tuesday with Adam Rossington unbeaten on 79.Lancashire started well after losing the toss, with Kyle Jarvis pinning Kyle Coetzer in front in the second over, but Duckett and Wakely then combined excellently to put Northants on top. With his captain happy to play the support act, former England Under -19s player Duckett revelled in his role as enforcer as he dispatched first Tom Bailey for six before targeting the spin bowling of Simon Kerrigan and Aaron Lilley as the morning session came to an end.The pair continued their serene progress from the morning session, compiling a second-wicket partnership of 170, before Australian James Faulkner uprooted Wakely's leg stump with a superb yorker, the skipper departing for a watchful 56.Duckett finally fell in the 50th over the day when he became spinner Kerrigan's 250th first-class wicket after the left armer trapped the century maker lbw for a thrilling 134 off only 151 balls, which included 19 fours and two sixes.Just two balls later, Kerrigan was celebrating again when Rob Keogh (19) popped a catch up to Lancashire skipper Steven Croft at short leg to give the home side some hope of a recovery as the afternoon progressed. The double wicket burst came as some relief to the beleaguered left-armer after his first over went for 15, during a period when he and fellow spinner Lilley were not allowed to settle by Duckett's aggressive stroke making. All hopes of a Lancashire comeback were slowly extinguished by the fifth wicket pair of Levi and Rossington, who steadied any nerves in the hour before tea to take the visitors to 272 for 4 at the break and then continued their steady but effective batting in the evening session. The new ball was negotiated without undue worry as both players reached their half-centuries with ease in the face of increasing frustration from the seamers, who struggled with both the unhelpful pitch and unsympathetic overhead conditions on a chastening day for the previously effective Lancashire attack. With the end of the day in sight, the partnership had extended to 142 when Levi uncharacteristically chased a wide one from Faulkner and nicked behind to wicket keeper Alex Davies for 57 before the Australian suddenly found himself on a hat-trick after Josh Cobb edged the next ball to Steven Croft at second slip.Rossington and former Lancashire allrounder Steven Crook dealt with the remaining five overs without any major scares to leave Lancashire with much to ponder going into the second day's play.

Fawad and Voges in Ashes squad

Legspinner Fawad Ahmed and veteran batsman Adam Voges have both been included in Australia’s squads for the upcoming Ashes tour and the two-Test series in the West Indies that precedes it. Peter Nevill has been confirmed as the backup wicketkeeper to Brad Haddin, while there was no room for Glenn Maxwell, James Faulkner or Joe Burns.Shaun Marsh was preferred to fellow Test incumbent Burns and joins his brother Mitchell Marsh in the 17-man Ashes squad. Peter Siddle was named in the group after being dropped from the Test side during the summer and he is expected to feature in the Tests in the Caribbean, with Ryan Harris staying home for the birth of his first child and joining the touring party for the Ashes.Fast bowler James Pattinson was deemed unavailable for the West Indies tour after suffering an injury to his left hamstring during the Sheffield Shield final, and he will be assessed by medical staff over the coming weeks. Pattinson’s breaking down in the Shield final did not prevent Victoria’s win, which came thanks in large part to Fawad’s eight-wicket haul in the first innings. As an asylum seeker from Pakistan, Fawad’s Australian citizenship was rushed through in 2013 to have him available for the Ashes but he was not chosen for that tour, and had to settle for debuts in ODI and Twenty20 international cricket. However, his legspin has bewitched batsmen all over Australia this summer and he topped the Shield tally with 48 victims at 24.85.The selectors have also included the leading run scorer this season. Voges plundered 1358 runs at 104.46 in the Shield this summer to make himself almost impossible to ignore, and his experience will make him a valuable member of the squad. Voges was first part of a Test squad when he was called up during the 2006-07 Ashes in Australia, but nearly a decade later still does not have a baggy green.Nevill’s selection as the backup wicketkeeper ahead of Matthew Wade, who was chosen for the 2013 Ashes, comes after a summer in which he piled up 764 Shield runs at 76.40, including a career-best 235 not out against Tasmania in Hobart last month. Nevill toured the West Indies in 2012 when Brad Haddin flew home for personal reasons, but is yet to debut for Australia in any format.”Basically the white ball’s been put down and we’re into red ball cricket,” National Selector Rod Marsh said. “We’re not playing it at home, and obviously we’ve been a powerhouse at home in recent series, but we haven’t done that well overseas and it’s time we got that right. We’ve hopefully picked sides that will be very, very good overseas and we hope to win both the series in the West Indies and we’d be delighted if we won the Ashes – that would be a fair 12 months I reckon.”Fawad Ahmed has been named in Australia’s Test squad•Getty Images

Marsh explained that Voges’ sheer weight of runs had pushed him ahead of Joe Burns, who played the last two Tests of the home summer but will now travel with Australia A to India, where he has never played before, to gain experience with an eye towards 2016 and series away to Sri Lanka and India.”He had a magnificent Shield season, absolutely no doubt about that,” Marsh said of Voges. “I looked at him on four or five occasions, maybe more, this year. and I thought ‘I don’t know how anyone is going to get this bloke out’. He was that dominant, but it wasn’t only the fact he made 1300-odd runs, it was the way he made them. It was as good as any Sheffield Shield batting I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen some good stuff.”Pure weight of runs, and the way in which he got those runs [put Voges ahead of Burns]. You could just see Test player written all over him. Mark Waugh saw him bat, Trevor Hohns saw him bat, I saw him bat, all the state coaches, all the state talent managers. Everyone said the same thing – surely we can’t all be wrong.”It’ worked out quite nicely for Joe in a lot of ways in as much as he will be going to India, where he’s never played cricket, he’ll have two four-day matches and five one-day matches in India, and I reckon that will be very good for his overall development as a batsman.”Although none of the inclusions were especially surprising, it was notable that neither Faulkner nor Maxwell made the squad after both playing key roles in Australia’s recent World Cup triumph. Ashton Agar was also considered a possible candidate for the second spinning position, but Fawad’s credentials this summer were too strong.”Forty-eight wickets is a pretty good season, and it wasn’t only the fact he got 48 wickets, it was the way he bowled,” Marsh said. “He bowled beautifully all summer and him being a legspinner as opposed to a finger spinner probably also gave him a slight advantage because, believe it or not, Australia’s always looking for legspinners. We have a proud history of legspinning in this country, and we want that to continue.”He doesn’t bowl too much rubbish, and he creates a lot of pressure. He’s able to have men around the bat in most instances and he keeps asking the batsmen questions. That’s what most good spinners do, you need to be able to remain on as a legspinners. It is all very well ripping the ball, but if you bowl two full tosses, two long hops, it’s very hard for the captain to keep you on. He maintains good economy and he asks many questions of both left and right-handed batsmen.”Cricket Australia has also named its list of 19 contracted players for the 2015-16 season, with Siddle the notable exclusion from last year despite being named in the Test squads. Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh and Pat Cummins have all joined the list from outside the contract list named this time last year for the 2014-15 season.George Bailey retained his contract despite effectively being viewed as an ODI-only player, and being dropped from the side during the recent World Cup. Clarke’s retirement from one-day cricket could pave the way for Bailey to return as a regular member of the team when they next convene for a series later this year.Australia A squads have also been named for a series of four-day and one-day games in India throughout July, with Usman Khawaja named to captain the team in both formats alongside Matthew Wade as his deputy.Test squad Michael Clarke (capt), Steven Smith (vice-capt), Fawad Ahmed, Brad Haddin, Josh Hazlewood, Ryan Harris (Ashes only), Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Peter Nevill, Chris Rogers, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, Adam Voges, David Warner, Shane Watson.Contract list George Bailey, Michael Clarke, Pat Cummins, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Brad Haddin, Ryan Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, James Pattinson, Chris Rogers, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, David Warner, Shane Watson.Australia A four-day squad Usman Khawaja (capt), Matthew Wade (vice-capt), Ashton Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Joe Burns, Pat Cummins, Andrew Fekete, Peter Handscomb, Travis Head, Nic Maddinson, Glenn Maxwell, Steve O’Keefe, Gurinder Sandhu, Marcus Stoinis.Australia A one-day squad Usman Khawaja (capt), Matthew Wade (vice-capt), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Cameron Boyce, Joe Burns, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Pat Cummins, Callum Ferguson, Peter Handscomb, Travis Head, Chris Lynn, Gurinder Sandhu, Adam Zampa.

O confronto

Mathews at loss to explain collapse

Angel Mathews said Sri Lanka’s ten-wicket defeat in the third ODI at Old Trafford was “one of the worst games I’ve ever played”

Andrew Fidel Fernando28-May-2014In his relatively young career as an international cricketer, Angelo Mathews has witnessed several appalling batting collapses. Perhaps the most traumatic was Sri Lanka’s second-innings capitulation in the Cardiff Test in 2011, when on a flat pitch, needing to survive less than two sessions for a draw, the team succumbed to 82 all out. Eight months later, Sri Lanka suffered their worst ODI ignominy, crashing to 43 after South Africa had made 301 at Paarl.Yet, Wednesday’s defeat, Mathews said, was “one of the worst games I’ve ever played”. Almost that exact phrase was delivered by Eoin Morgan after the previous match, in a series that is proving nearly as unpredictable as a double-pendulum. Sri Lanka had appeared confident and well-acclimatised in the approach to this match, but then served up a performance that undermined all their gains in England.Mathews said complacency was not at the root of the collapse, but was otherwise at something of a loss to explain the debacle. On Twitter, fans who were similarly dumbfounded joked the team’s trip to Manchester United’s Old Trafford days before had facilitated the osmosis of mediocrity. But even ardent United fan Mahela Jayawardene will find it hard to blame his strange lbw dismissal on David Moyes.”We’re in the same situation as England after Durham,” Mathews said. “Poor shot selection was the main reason why we got so few runs. It was never a 67 wicket. There were no demons in the wicket. It swung a little bit in the first seven to ten overs, but after that it wasn’t doing much.”Several Sri Lanka batsmen had been undone by the short ball in the first match of the series and, although more were out to fuller deliveries in Manchester, England’s bowlers had clearly drawn up plans to bounce out some individuals. Dinesh Chandimal was conspicuously targeted and though he survived the barrage early in his innings, he was out driving a wide delivery, having been kept pinned to the crease for some time.”We expected the short ball,” Mathews said. “We didn’t really deal with it properly. It’s hard to explain why we were all out for 67. We knew England were going to come back hard at us, and we just couldn’t cope up with it.”Chris Jordan took home his second Man-of-the-Match award of the series, for his career-best 5 for 29, but it had been James Anderson who made the initial incisions, in a pinpoint seven-over new-ball spell that claimed both openers and conceded only 10 runs. There was no prodigious swing for any of the bowlers but Sri Lanka’s batsmen lacked the concentration to move past difficult periods, and the intent to reverse pressure.”There was no intention of hanging in there and toughing it out,” Mathews said. “In overcast conditions James bowls really well on any wicket. He bowled some really good deliveries together with Harry Gurney and Jordan. You can’t really moan about the weather or the wicket. It’s just us to blame. If we want to stay alive in the series, we’ve got to win against them in the next game.”Sri Lanka have used Lahiru Thirimanne to open alongside Tillakaratne Dilshan in this series, despite Kusal Perera’s presence in the squad, and Mathews suggested that strategy was down to the expectation Thirimanne had a tighter technique for the moving ball. Changes in the top order may be forthcoming, however, after two major batting failures in three matches.”I thought even though he didn’t get enough runs in the Durham game, Lahiru played the part of getting through those vital six overs of Anderson. We’ve got to get through that spell to try and build up to have batters at the end. I thought he played his part but today, unfortunately, he played a poor shot. The first ten overs at Lord’s and Birmingham are going to be vital. With this weather around, we’re really going to need solid openers. Thiri is one of them. Unfortunately he hasn’t got enough runs yet.”

WI look for T20 feelgood factor

ESPNcricinfo previews the opening Twenty20 between West Indies and England, which pits the last two World T20 winners together

Preview by Andrew McGlashan08-Mar-2014Match FactsMarch 8, Barbados
Start time 2.00pm (1800GMT)0:00

Croft: Morgan is a very intelligent batsman

The Big PictureNow the serious World T20 preparations can begin. The week ahead provides a valuable opportunity for the teams to fine-tune their plans ahead of Bangladesh.Chris Gayle’s return is crucial for West Indies although there will be plenty of crossed fingers that he is over his injury problems. Their top order did not pack anything like the same fear-factor without him in the ODIs and the stagnant starts were a major reason England were able to rebound and take the seriesDarren Sammy is back in the captaincy seat as West Indies prepare to defend their World T20 crown•AFPFor England the whole trip has been geared towards the World T20, with a bespoke squad given a longer time to work together, and these three matches will provide a clearer idea of what Ashley Giles and Stuart Broad have in store. Their plans have taken a hit, however, with the injury to Joe Root although Alex Hales should be fit to resume his role at the top of the orderThere will be a balance to strike for the captains and coaches: there is a series at stake, and professional pride will want to win it, but there may also be a temptation to ensure every player who is boarding a plane to Bangladesh gets at least one run out over these three matches.Form guide(completed matches, most recent first)
West Indies WLLLL
EnglandLLLWL In the spotlightHe’s back. And West Indies will hope that Chris Gayle’s return is not a false start this time. He can win Twenty20 matches in 10 overs; few players hit the ball harder or further. His comeback against Ireland – following the hamstring injury suffered against India last November – was a brief affair as a cautious approach was taken with a view to this format. A lack of cricket may hinder him, but then again Gayle could still swagger in and club the ball all over Kensington Oval.Eoin Morgan has had a stop-start tour so far, struck by a knee injury during the warm-up match and playing just one of the ODIs where he was bowled third ball by Sunil Narine. Therefore this series is especially important for him to find his stride before reaching Bangladesh. In the absence of Kevin Pietersen, the onus will be on Morgan to bring that sprinkle of something special to the middle order and it will be interesting to watch how high he bats and how flexible the strategy with him is.Team newsHaving stuck with their main ODI squad in Antigua, West Indies now bring in their T20 specialists. Johnson Charles and Andre Fletcher are batting options, Samuel Badree provides a rolling legspinner, Andre Russell adds to the lower-order hitting, while Krishmar Santokie and Sheldon Cottrell provided the much sought-after left-arm angle.West Indies (possible) 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Dwayne Smith, 3 Johnson Charles, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 7 Darren Sammy (capt), 8 Andre Russell, 9 Sunil Narine, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Samuel BadreeAlex Hales will return to partner Michael Lumb after missing his one-day chance through injury so Moeen Ali could slip down a spot to cover for the absent Joe Root. Spin was a major success in the ODIs, but the Kensington Oval surface is unlikely to offer as much assistance so room may need to be found for an extra paceman, either Chris Jordan or Jade Dernbach. The latter will cause consternation among many England supporters.England (possible) 1 Alex Hales, 2 Michael Lumb, 3 Moeen Ali, 4 Eoin Morgan, 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Ravi Bopara, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Stuart Broad (capt), 10 James Tredwell, 11 Chris JordanPitch and conditionsThe pitch is expected to be true and not favour the spinners so heavily as Antigua. Barbados can be, when the groundsman wishes, one of the surfaces in the Caribbean that retains some bounce to encourage the quicks.Stats and trivia England’s previous Twenty20 on this ground was when they secured the World T20 title in 2010, beating Australia by seven wickets in the final. The two dies last met in this format in the previous World T20 when West Indies won by 15 runs Chris Gayle and Charles added 103 for the first wicket. West Indies’ series-levelling win against Ireland in Jamaica ended a run of five defeats on the bounce. The total number of sixes hit by players in the England squad is 136 (not including the injured Root): the total number for West Indies is 212Quotes”Yes, England did win the one-day series. But we’ve shown that, once we put them under pressure, they don’t respond too well.”
“It’s going to be difficult to find a strategy that will work here in Barbados and also would work in Bangladesh as well.”

Murdoch, Napier set up Wellington win

Wellington opened a four-point lead at the top of the table after beating Northern Districts by 21 runs

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Jan-2014
ScorecardWellington opened a four-point lead at the top of the table after beating Northern Districts by 21 runs.Wellington made the most of some poor fielding by Northern Districts to post a score of 145 for 6 after most of their top order had fallen cheaply. Trent Boult, Scott Kuggeleijn and Jono Boult struck early on to leave Wellington reeling at 36 for 3 in the sixth over. A 90-run fourth-wicket partnership between Stephen Murdoch and James Franklin rescued Wellington. Murdoch had three dropped chances and made the most of them to score a 46-ball 57 with five fours and a six. Franklin also struck three sixes in his knock of 46 from 35 balls.Northern Districts found themselves in a position similar to Wellington’s early in their innings and were struggling at 39 for 4 in the seventh over. A 54-run stand between Scott Styris and Daryl Mitchell helped Northern Districts recover slightly, but after Styris was out for 29, the side lost their next four wickets for seven runs within two overs. Pacer Graham Napier took 3 for 18 in his four overs, while Brent Arnel chipped in with two wickets.
