Kallis doubtful for first Test

Jacques Kallis is rated as only 50-50 to make the first Test against England at Centurion Park as he continues a slow recovery from the fractured rib that ruled him out of the one-day series.

Andrew McGlashan in East London07-Dec-2009Jacques Kallis is rated as only 50-50 to make the first Test against England at Centurion Park as he continues a slow recovery from the fractured rib that ruled him out of the one-day series. However, on a more positive note for the home side, Dale Steyn is progressing well after his hamstring strain which he picked up in the third ODI at Port Elizabeth.Mike Procter, the convenor of selectors, is confident that Steyn will be ready to lead the attack in nine days but admitted the outlook isn’t so positive for Kallis raising further questions as to how South Africa will balance their side for the opening encounter.”Dale should be okay, but with Jacques we aren’t quite sure yet. Things are progressing well, but on the conservative side I would say 50-50 is a fair call,” Procter told Cricinfo. “It’s a nasty injury he picked up.”When Kallis was initially ruled out of the one-dayers it was suggested that he would be considered as a specialist batsman if the injury hadn’t cleared up in time for the first Test. However, Procter said that wouldn’t be considered with the risks of aggravating the problem too great.”With a cracked rib it’s either right or it isn’t, there isn’t really anything in between like with a side strain where you may be able to get away with it by not bowling,” he said. “It affects his batting as well and I think he has to be a 100% fit. We wouldn’t want to jeopardise his chances by doing further damage to him with three more Tests in the series.”Kallis and Steyn will be assessed when the South Africans join up in Potchefstroom for a three-day training camp on Friday and if Kallis is ruled out a decision will need to be taken over how to cover for both his batting and bowling. In the one-dayers they went along the extra bowler route which worked at Cape Town when AB de Villiers blazed a hundred, but failed spectacularly at Port Elizabeth when they were blown away for 119 – a collapse that cost them the series. So early in a four-match contest it seems highly unlikely that South Africa would gamble on weakening the batting even though they have included Ryan McLaren as a potential all-round option. Both he and Mark Boucher were batting one place too high in the one-day series which means Alviro Petersen is shaping up as a Test debutant. Petersen was impressive in coloured clothes as he notched three half centuries but would have huge shoes to fill.”Jacques is a massive player and it will be great to have him there,” he told the . “If I am required to play I’ll make sure I’m as ready as possible.”While South Africa’s headaches will revolve around replacing Kallis, at least it is appearing as though they won’t have to concern themselves with also covering for their strike bowler. “He [Steyn] is coming along nicely,” Procter said. “He and Jacques are both crucial to us, but Dale isn’t looking like too much of a concern.”Steyn’s recovery would mean even less chance of Friedel de Wet, the Lions quick bowler, making a debut. De Wet was the most surprising name in South Africa’s 15-man squad, but with Wayne Parnell and Morne Morkel vying to support Steyn and Makhaya Ntini in the pace ranks he will have to wait a while. However, he showed impressive form in the most recent round of Supersport games with match figures of 6 for 76 against the Titans.”In camps like this what we try and do is get guys in who haven’t been around before to come so if they are called up it’s not like going in totally cold,” Procter said. “It’s a good chance to allow Graeme Smith and Mickey [Arthur] a chance to have a look at them.”He had a good season last year and I’ve seen him bowl recently on some pretty flat tracks at East London and at Johannesburg so he’s a player worth looking at and we’ll see what comes out of it.”

Celtic: Jullien injury return date unclear

Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that there is still no timeframe in regards to Christopher Jullien making a Celtic return, as reported by Jo Hendry.

The Lowdown: Jullien’s terrible 2021…

The 28-year-old hasn’t featured for the Hoops for almost 12 months now after suffering a serious knee injury against Dundee United just after Christmas 2020.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-17/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Frenchman, labelled as ‘excellent’ by former Hoops boss Neil Lennon, is yet to feature under Postecoglou, who brought in a number of defensive additions over the summer.

Jullien returned to training back in October, but he hasn’t managed to feature in a competitive match for the Bhoys in the current campaign.

The Latest: No timeframe…

Postecoglou confirmed on Wednesday prior to the meeting with Hearts that Nir Bitton and Tom Rogic would be available to fact Hearts tonight.

However, Carl Starfelt and Giorgos Giakoumakis remain sidelined, while no timeframe has been given in regards to Jullien’s return.

The Verdict: Not ideal…

It’s been more than six weeks since Jullien returned to training, so it appears as if the Hoops are being extremely cautious when it comes to the centre-back.

Celtic have a very busy month ahead with nine fixtures in all competitions, so it isn’t ideal being without Starfelt and still having no timeframe when it comes to the French centre-back.

Hopefully, we will learn more on Jullien before the end of the year, but at this moment in time, it appears as if we may not see the 28-year-old defender until 2022.

Conte draws up 6-man Spurs transfer list

Franck Kessie and Marcelo Brozovic are amongst the players named on new Tottenham manager Antonio Conte’s six-man shortlist ahead of the January transfer window, according to Sportmediaset.

The Lowdown: Conte plots January moves

Conte has been brought in (The Athletic) to replace Nuno Espirito Santo, who was sacked as Spurs manager after the 3-0 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

There are no shortage of areas in the Spurs squad which need improvement, with Harry Kane struggling for goals and no adequate back-up behind him, while the defence has conceded 16 goals in their first 10 Premier League games. To put that number into perspective, 18th-placed Burnley have let in the same amount.

The Italian is seemingly already preparing for the January transfer window, and he has drawn up a shortlist as a result.

The Latest: Six-man list revealed

According to the reports from Italy, the new gaffer has drawn up a six-man list of potential targets to buff up his squad.

Dusan Vlahovic, Franck Kessie, Marcelo Brozovic, Alessandro Bastoni, Stefan de Vrij and Manuel Lazzari make up the alleged list.

Of course, Conte and Fabio Paratici worked together in Italy to great success, winning the league title with Juventus, so it is no surprise to see the pair shopping in their homeland.

The Verdict: What he knows

While Conte did win the Premier League with Chelsea, it is in Italy where he really made his name. He has won Serie A with both Juventus and Inter Milan, massively upsetting the former’s long run of dominance with the latter, while he also coached the Italian national team to a European Championships quarter-final in 2016.

As such, he knows the players in his homeland inside out, and it is not surprise to see him look at what he knows. He even coached three of them at Inter in Brozovic, Bastoni and de Vrij.

There is some real talent there, as well, with the former of that trio having featured in a World Cup final, while £49.5m-valued Kessie (Transfermarkt) for example has been labelled as “devastating” by Antonio Cassano (via Sempre Milan).

Whether he will be able to pick up all or some of them in the next window remains to be seen, but with a reported £150m transfer budget, he is likely to be able to give it a good go.

In other news, the numbers of Conte’s contract have been revealed.

Everton fans on Benitez’s Delph comments

Many Everton fans have been left reacting to some comments that have emerged from Rafa Benitez on Fabian Delph.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of their match away at Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, the Spaniard said (via Toffee TV) with regards to the player: “He has the right mentality, the right attitude. I have to stop him in the training sessions because he’s pushing very hard.”

The comments came as a bit of a surprise to some members of the Goodison Park faithful, given that he has not really lived up to the £8.55m price tag that they paid City to sign him for, missing a lot of games through injury and only managing to make a mere 33 appearances in total over all competitions across the last three seasons, scoring no goals and making no assists (Transfermarkt).

As such, some supporters of the Merseyside club have previously called for him to be sold, and so the comments about his mentality and attitude in training have come as a shock.

Saints handed Broja injury boost

After Southampton duo James Ward-Prowse and Valentino Livramento were forced to drop out of international duty earlier this week, it seems as though the south coast club have now been handed some good news regarding the fitness of one of their other key senior players.

What’s the news?

It has recently been reported by Lapsi (via Sport Witness) that on-loan Saints striker Armando Broja’s apparent muscle injury that he picked up during the latter stages of Southampton’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa, where he came on as a substitute for Adam Armstrong, is not as serious as originally feared and that he will be available to play for Albania during the current international break.

After only just recovering from an ankle injury before making his return against Villa, this news will surely be a big relief to everyone at the club and have the Southampton fans buzzing.

After all, prior to their 1-0 win over Watford that Broja missed due to his ankle injury, the striker had managed to score two goals in his two previous league starts against Leeds United and Burnley, showing that the on-loan Chelsea man was starting to get into the swing of things in front of goal at St. Mary’s.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-southampton-news” title=”Check out the latest Southampton news!”]

Moving forward, with Albania set to take on England and Andorra in their next World Cup qualifying matches in the coming days, everyone at Southampton will undoubtedly be hoping that the 20-year-old, who is currently valued at £2.7m according to Transfermarkt, can get through these games unscathed.

They will be eager to see him get back to action in Saints colours when their next Premier League game against Norwich City comes around to see if he can get back to the goalscoring form he showed before his ankle injury.

However, with Armstrong managing to score the south coast side’s winning goal against Villa before making way for Broja, it seems as though Ralph Hasenhuttl could have a big decision to make over who he chooses to play up front against Norwich, with Che Adams also in the mix considering he managed to score their goal in the 1-0 win over Watford.

Either way, with Southampton having managed to win three of their four previous league games, Hasenhuttl will be hoping that his side will be able to continue this good run of form. The fact that Broja will likely be available, meanwhile, will only aid their cause as they bid to do just that. This’ll surely delight Saints fans no end.

Ijaz bail plea rejected in forgery case

Former Pakistan batsman Ijaz Ahmed was remanded in custody for 14 days on Friday after a magistrate rejected his plea for bail in a forgery case. Magistrate Mohammad Younis Awan conducted a hearing for the case in which Ijaz was alleged to have issued false cheques worth Rs 10.05 million (approximately US$1.3 million) to two clients, reported to be property dealers.”The magistrate has put off Ijaz’s bail plea, remanded him for 14 days and directed police to provide him with medical facilities as he was unwell,” a court statement said.Ijaz, 40, last week had pleaded his innocence and said he would take the accusers to court. He was arrested on March 26, but was taken to hospital after suffering a bout of asthma and breathing problems.Kashif Javed, Ijaz’s lawyer, said his client would return to hospital. “We will continue to seek bail when the case resumes and hopefully police will send him to hospital later on Friday, as he was still unwell,” Javed told .Ijaz played 60 Tests and 250 ODIs and was a member of the Pakistan team that won the 1992 World Cup. Following his retirement from international cricket, he had been working as the fielding coach of the national team for the last few months. He was earlier on the selection committee and had also served as senior coach at the National Cricket Academy.

Spurs among the teams scouting Bowen

Tottenham Hotspur have been mooted with interest in Jarrod Bowen this week…

What’s the word?

According to the Independent’s Melissa Reddy, the north Londoners are one of several Premier League teams scouting the West Ham attacker extensively, with Liverpool and Leicester City also mentioned.

The 24-year-old winger joined the Irons in a £20m-plus move back in January 2020 and has been a standout performer for David Moyes ever since, so it’s no wonder some of the bigger teams are taking a keen eye on potentially swooping for him in the future.

It still very much remains to be seen how much Bowen would command in the current market, although he is valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, having signed a £60k-per-week deal at the London Stadium.

Paratici masterclass

Interest in the versatile dynamo should hardly come as a surprise given his recent form, even during their defeat to Manchester United at the weekend, he stood out amongst his peers, creating four key chances and being a tireless presence out of position up top.

Not only would he meet the homegrown quota but he could also meet one of Nuno Santo’s previous desires – if reports are to be believed.

During the summer window, the Telegraph’s Matt Law claimed that the Portuguese was keen to convert Spurs’ system to a two-man attack and that he wanted to find a Premier League experienced player to play alongside Harry Kane.

That did not come to fruition, which may have left the Spurs boss rather frustrated, especially given their struggles in front of goal this term. They haven’t scored in their last two league outings and before then, they won three games by a 1-0 scoreline.

Bowen isn’t an out-and-out striker but he fits the mould of what Nuno likes – think of Adama Traore at Wolves as he often was deployed up top, more so in the absence of Raul Jimenez.

Just like the former Hull City hotshot when Michail Antonio is out of the side.

The uncapped Englishman has delivered nine goals and 11 assists in 59 appearances for the Hammers, contributing once every 200 minutes, via Transfermarkt.

Whilst he’s only been able to provide one assist so far in 2021/22, Bowen tops the charts for creativity, averaging 2.4 key passes per game, which is better than every single member of Spurs’ current squad, which suggests he could well fix another issue in N17.

It’s no wonder he was once lauded as “unplayable” by his former Tigers head coach Grant McCann, whilst talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan once described him as a “world-beater.”

In Bowen, Paratici could well deliver an absolute masterclass of a signing. He can help fix their creative issues, be the perfect foil for Kane and be a Traore-like presence up top for Nuno.

If a deal can be done, then Spurs must sanction it.

AND in other news, Nuno set for Spurs boost as major Hotspur Way development emerges, fans surely buzzing…

Everton transfer update on Davies

Some Everton fans have been left fuming as a transfer update emerged on Tom Davies.

As per The Athletic, the central midfield player was made available for transfer by the Goodison Park faithful in the summer window, but he preferred to stay and fight for his place.

Davies picked up form toward the end of the 2020/21 term, after often finding himself criticised by some supporters of the Merseyside club earlier on in the season.

Being a local boy, it would have been a real shame for Rafa Benitez’s team to have decided to let him go, and his attitude in terms of wanting to fight for his place has to be admired.

Thus, it is not a surprise at all to see so many Toffees raging over the news.

Lower orders ensure first-innings points

A round-up of the second day of the fourth-round matches of the regional four-day competition

Cricinfo staff01-Feb-2009A plucky last-wicket stand of 45, between Bevon Brown and Andrew Richardson, steered defending champions and current table-toppers Jamaica to first-innings points against Barbados on a tense second day in Kingston. Precariously placed at 269 for 9, the pair scored the 24 runs needed to go past Barbados’ 293 in the first innings and helped Jamaica end on 314, a lead of 21. Brown finished unbeaten on 30 from 55 balls with three boundaries while Richardson was the last man out for 12. Resuming on 31 for no loss, Brenton Parchment (47) and Danza Hyatt (34) helped Jamaica make good progress, with both putting on an opening partnership of 74. But it was Wavell Hinds’ 75 which held the Jamaican innings together. He was involved in a crucial sixth-wicket stand of 92 with Keith Hibbert (25), lifting the team from a perilous 143 for 5 after lunch. Kevin Stoute was the most successful bowler for Barbados with 3 for 56, while Ryan Hinds and Dwayne Smith finished with two wickets apiece.Captain Travis Dowlin top-scored with 61 as Guyana took a narrow lead against the Leeward Islands in Nevis. If Dowlin’s half-century was vital, first-class debutant Christopher Barnwell, and the Crandon brothers, Royston and Esaun, played their parts with the bat as Guyana clawed to 229. From the overnight score of 20 without loss, and needing 206 more for first-innings points, Guyana had two early stutters before Narsingh Deonarine andDowlin linked up to push the score past 100. However, a five-wicket blitz by Tonito Willett and the legspinner Anthony Martin put Leewards on course for first-innings honours, with Guyana reduced to 209 for 8 at tea from 116 for 3 at lunch. But Esuan was to be the late-innings hero, stroking a 29-ball 33 to help Guyana reach safety. Leewards lost a wicket just before the close to finish on 63 for 1.Fifties from Andre Fletcher and Johnson Charles, along with key contributions down the order helped Windward Islands to first-innings points against CombinedCampuses & Colleges (CCC) in Barbados. Fletcher, whose place in the side was under cloud at the start of the season because of disciplinary action by the Windwards’ selectors, entertained the crowd with an explosive 69 after Charles had provided the early fireworks. Charles later settled down to score 54, as Windwards, replying to the CCC’s first innings total of 227, were dismissed for 323. A collapse in the middle though, saw them slip from 203 for 2 to 258 for 7 before a late flurry from Shane Shillingford and Mervyn Matthew for the eighth wicket yielded 69 runs, pushing Windwards to a lead of 96. Offspinner Ryan Austin was the pick of the CCC bowlers with 5 for 108, while Jamel Noel and Khismar Catlin bagged two each. Batting a second time, CCC reached 5 for no loss with captain Simon Jackson and Omar Phillips at the crease.
