Newcastle eyeing Arsenal’s William Saliba

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce is eyeing a move for Arsenal centre-back William Saliba in the summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

After conceding a whopping 62 goals in the Premier League last season – only four teams had a worse record – it’s no surprise that the Magpies are keen to reinforce the centre of defence this summer.

According to the Daily Mail, Bruce has his sights set on Saliba, who is yet to play a competitive game for Arsenal after spending time on loan at Saint-Etienne and Nice back in his native France.

The report added that “the 20-year-old is waiting on a decision from Mikel Arteta about whether he figures in the manager’s first team plans for next season with interest mounting in the centre back.”

Fans would love him

Described as someone with “cold blood” for the way he defends so calmly and with intent, the £17m-rated Saliba is the kind of centre-back signing which would likely have Newcastle fans raving.

The 1.93m (6 foot 4) powerhouse has excelled in his time away from Arsenal, proving why he is one of European football’s most promising centre-backs – during the 2020/21 season with Nice in Ligue 1, he was dribbled past just once.

His former coach Fabio Frasconi once claimed: “William Saliba will go far, very far. He reminds me of Raphaël Varane”, whilst former Saint-Etienne teammates Yohan Cabaye and Mathieu Debuchy, both former Newcastle players, have also waxed lyrical about him to the Official Ligue 1 podcast.

Debuchy said: “I think he is a great player. He’s strong, with good technique. He’s quick, too. I think he has a lot of quality to play at Arsenal.”

Adrian Ursea, his coach at Nice, added: “You can see he has character and above all, he reassures the others. He’s not vocal, but he’s a leader in his own way.

“To see you a young lad who isn’t even 20 yet playing with such assurance against strikers like Wissam Ben Yedder and Kevin Volland, it really is quite amazing.

“He also gives off a calm air that the team needs. I’m not interested in age. The only question about a rookie is whether he’s a good player or not.”

Given Newcastle’s struggles defensively last season, Saliba’s potential arrival could go a long way to giving the Magpies a real leader at the back and someone with a tendency to rarely ever be beaten by opponents.

Meanwhile, Steve Bruce must avoid a move for this Premier League star…

Birmingham no longer under transfer embargo

Lee Bowyer’s Birmingham City side are no longer operating under a transfer embargo.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to a report by Birmingham Live, who claim that the Blues are now free to buy and sell players in the summer transfer window, with the alleged transfer embargo imposed by the EFL no longer in place.

It was reported by the Daily Mail back in April that Birmingham were one of 10 Championship sides to be on the receiving end of transfer sanctions handed out by the governing body, who were concerned with the financial health of the clubs in question following the effects of the pandemic.

Bowyer will be buzzing

Having gone on to comfortably secure survival in the Championship following his arrival at the club back in March, Bowyer will undoubtedly be looking to bring in additions over the summer who will provide his side with the best possible chance of mounting a push towards the top half of the table next season.

As such, the news that Birmingham are now able to buy and sell players as they wish is sure to have left the 44-year-old buzzing, as he will be free to move for his targets without any hindrance from the EFL.

However, despite this latest development, Blues fans should not expect a glut of summer arrivals at St. Andrew’s, as the former Charlton boss has gone on record to state that progress will be steady under his leadership, suggesting that he will not be spending huge sums of money in the bid for a top-six finish next season.

And, considering the financial troubles Birmingham found themselves in prior to Bowyer’s arrival at the club, issues which were not helped by a string of managers doing the exact opposite of the 44-yeard-old’s promise to build a team gradually, it would very much seem as if the former England international has the club’s best interest at heart – something that fans will be delighted by.

Still, despite the fact that the former Leeds star has no desire to spend massive amounts of cash in one hit, the fact that he is now allowed to bring in some players to improve his squad will obviously delight him as he looks to take the next small step in Birmingham’s plan to get back to the big time.

Everton fans react to Lucas Digne exit link

PSG are monitoring Everton left-back Lucas Digne, according to French outlet Le10 Sport.

The Parisians, who missed out to Lille on the Ligue 1 title recently, are said to be keen to strengthen their defence and have identified the 27-year-old as a possible option.

Could Digne really go back to PSG?

Digne has previously spent three years in the French capital, as PSG signed him from Lille back in 2013 for a fee of £13.5m. In 2016, having spent time on loan at Roma, Digne moved to Barcelona for £14.85m, and Everton then shelled out £18.2m to bring him to Goodison Park two years later.

He has gone to rack up a century of appearances for the Toffees, contributing 18 assists in that time. Among his team-mates, only Gylfi Sigurdsson (10) and James Rodriguez (eight) set up more goals than Digne (seven) in the 2020/21 season, despite him playing as a left-back.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side eyeing two Blues

This may not be the only business conducted between PSG and Everton. According to Fabrizio Romano, the two clubs remain in talks over a permanent deal for Toffees striker Moise Kean, who spent last season on loan at the Parc des Princes.

Twitter account Everton News Feed relayed the report on Digne, and here’s the pick of the reactions from Toffees supporters.

Giakoumakis could add a different dimension

Southampton have been linked with Giorgos Giakoumakis recently and the Greek striker could add a completely new dimension to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s attack next season, should he make the move to St Mary’s this summer.

The Saints were linked with the VVV Venlo star recently, with TEAMtalk suggesting that the South Coast club, along with Norwich City and Brighton, were keen on bringing him to the Premier League this summer.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a phenomenal season in the Eredivisie, contributing 26 goals in just 30 appearances in the Dutch top-flight, which has helped him average a superb 7.30 rating from WhoScored.

It is not just his goals that would make him an excellent fit at Southampton however.

While Giakoumakis may only be six foot tall, he has averaged four aerials won per game in the Eredivisie this season, which is more than any Southampton player has managed in the Premier League, with six foot six Jannik Vestergaard’s 3.4 aerials won per game the best of any player in Hasenhuttl’s squad.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-southampton-news%2c-transfer-rumours-and-more” title=“Latest Southampton news, transfer rumours and more!“]

Danny Ings and Che Adams, Southampton’s main strike force this season, have managed 0.8 and 1.5 aerials won per game respectively, which suggests that going long isn’t really a viable option for Hasenhuttl at the moment. Meanwhile, Southampton have attempted the third-fewest crosses of any team in the Premier League this season, suggesting that they need a striker who can capitalise from crosses into the box.

Giakoumakis would certainly add that, as he is obviously a threat in the air as well as on the ground, and would surely capitalise from the quality of crosses that James Ward-Prowse can deliver from set-piece situations at Southampton.

Therefore, with recent reports suggesting that the “very special” striker could be prised away from VVV Venlo for less than £10m this summer, Martin Semmens should definitely be looking to bring him to St Mary’s, as he could offer something completely different in Hasenhuttl’s squad.

And, in other news… Southampton could sign their ideal Ings heir with swoop for “magnificent” 19-goal beast

Pundit claims Alioski’s time is up at Leeds

In an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern, David Norris, who made 36 appearances for Leeds United, has claimed that Ezgjan Alioski is all set to leave Elland Road when his contract expires this summer.

Alioski has been linked with a controversial move to Galatasaray as a free agent with many Leeds fans not taking the news very well, considering the hatred between the two clubs after the UEFA cup semi-final riots in 2000.

There has been a new twist in the Alioski saga though as in the last 48 hours reports have emerged that Galatasaray can’t afford his wages anymore and the defender doesn’t want to receive backlash from Leeds fans so he won’t be moving to Turkey.

Speaking on how it appears to be time up for Alioski at Leeds and how a deal may already be in place, Norris exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“If I’m honest, I think it’s probably time up for him because when it drags on this long and you haven’t got something sorted, it normally means that it is already done and dusted.

“If Bielsa wants to keep him I think he stays because at Leeds whatever Bielsa wants he gets, so it looks like it’s already agreed and has been done on the quiet.”

The 28-year old defender has been a regular starter for Leeds since joining in 2017 and he has been able to make the step up into the Premier League smoothly this season at left-back.

His ability to play anywhere down the left-hand side has allowed Stuart Dallas to be deployed in the centre of midfield and showcase both his attacking and defensive qualities.

Predicted Leicester City XI vs Palace

Leicester City will be aiming to make it back-to-back Premier League victories on Monday evening as they do battle with Crystal Palace.

The Foxes head into the clash at the King Power Stadium having soundly defeated West Bromwich Albion 3-0 last Thursday.

Will Rodgers be tempted to rotate much for the visit of the Eagles?

We are expecting just a couple of changes to the team that dispatched of the Baggies last week.

Kasper Schmeichel will, of course, be in goal as he has been for the Foxes’ last 108 league matches.

The Dane is set to be shielded by a strong back-three with Jonny Evans, Caglar Soyuncu and Wesley Fofana all selected. The former will be hoping to get on the scoresheet once more having netted against West Brom last time out.

There might be a slight alteration out-wide though. Timothy Castagne will doubtless play after an exhilarating showing against the Baggies on Thursday but Ricardo Pereira could return after sitting out the previous game.

Should he be fit enough, he will replace young left-back Luke Thomas, despite it possibly being better for the latter to remain in the starting XI.

Wilfred Ndidi and Youri Tielemans should start again having harnessed a hugely impressive understanding this season.

There should, however, be a slight alteration in front of that duo with £110k per week James Maddison, who is only just making his return from a long-term lay-off, replaced by Ayoze Perez.

Leicester’s front two should look exactly the same. Kelechi Iheanacho continued his fantastic form with yet another goal against West Brom, whilst Jamie Vardy ended his long run without one against the Baggies.

He will certainly be hoping to continue that goalscoring form on Monday having netted five career goals against the Eagles.

AND in more news, Leicester have been boosted with a major transfer target now potentially available…

Crystal Palace linked with Arnautovic

Crystal Palace are reportedly ‘on the trail’ of Marko Arnautovic with a view of wanting to sign him, according to Il Resto del Carlino (via Sport Witness).

As per the news outlet, the South London club as well as West Ham United and Bologna are suitors for the Shanghai Port FC striker, who is looking to leave the Chinese Super League.

Crystal Palace should sign Arnautovic

Roy Hodgson’s men should certainly be looking to sign Arnautovic in the summer transfer window if possible.

Of course, his £280,000-per-week wages would be an issue, but if the Eagles are able to negotiate a much more reasonable salary for the Austria international, then it would just be a matter of a transfer fee to deal with.

Arnautovic has a vast amount of experience playing in the Premier League before with Stoke City and the Hammers, with whom he managed a total of no fewer than 80 goal contributions during his time in the top flight over six consecutive seasons (Transfermarkt).

With growing uncertainties over the futures of many players in the squad due to them all having a matter of a few months left on their current contracts at Selhurst Park, CPFC really need to start planning ahead, and they should look no further than making Arnautovic one of their first summer signings.
