Leicester City: Foxes odds-on to win the race for Burnley winger Dwight McNeil

After being linked with a summer move, Leicester City are now the odds-on favourites to sign Burnley attacker Dwight McNeil according to some bookmakers, via Leicestershire Live, with manager Brendan Rodgers looking to snap up a creative outlet ahead of a busy 2020/21 Premier League campaign.

This also comes after Demarai Gray’s future has at the King Power Stadium has become more doubtful, especially after a report from The Telegraph linking him with a move to Newcastle United, and now the Foxes are ‘favourites’ to sign McNeil as a potential replacement.

Left-back Ben Chilwell has already departed the East Midlands in a £45m move to Chelsea, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal, and McNeil could be high on the list of candidates to come in and strengthen Rodgers’ squad.

Defender Timothy Castagne is reportedly set to join Leicester as Chilwell’s direct heir, but the Burnley youngster has been strongly tipped to follow him.

Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the left-sided midfielder started all 38 Premier League games for the Clarets last season, marking himself out as a key figure under Sean Dyche by scoring two goals and providing six assists from the flanks (WhoScored).

Out of Burnley’s entire squad, only Ashley Westwood managed to provide more key passes per game, perhaps attracting Rodgers and his staff at Leicester to a player deemed to have vast potential.

Speaking to Sky Sports via Lancs Live, pundit Jamie Redknapp has also waxed lyrical over McNeil’s ‘real quality’ and correctly predicted that top six sides would be after him in this window, now that Leicester could be in the chase.

Given the quick run of games over 2020/21, strength in depth may well be key, and the Englishman could provide a new dimension for the Foxes going forward.

Man City News: Pep Guardiola might need big favour from rivals in Koulibaly chase

Pep Guardiola has done an excellent job building an incredible Manchester City side for the last couple of years. And of course, the Citizens would also reap the rewards when they claimed the Premier League title two times in a row but now, once again, the Catalan coach will need to spice things up a bit.

And as ever, it’s the defensive line that will need some tweaking as Guardiola is looking to add to his team’s solidity. One of the names that have been continuously linked with Man City is none other than Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly. Of course, the big defender is largely regarded as one of the best in the world and as such, it will be quite difficult to get him in the first place.

But according to the Manchester Evening News, City will need a big favour from their eternal rivals, Manchester United, if they are to get this deal over the line. Actually, it won’t be as much about what the Red Devils can do for them but rather about them not doing anything at all.

If we go back a couple of years, we’ll remember that it were United who snatched Harry Maguire in front of City and now, they are once again linked with Koulibaly as well.

MEN state an approach from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is unlikely but as long as they are mentioned as interested or don’t categorically rule it out by signing someone else, Napoli will have all the negotiating power to slam a huge asking price for their defender.

So this time, Man City need United to stay out of the race. If history has taught us anything, however, it’s that the Red Devils have a knack of buying the Citizens’ targets.

Verdict

Needless to say, this is an enormous favour to ask, especially considering we’re talking about city rivals here. But Man City need defensive reinforcements and it will be interesting to see how they approach this situation.

Knowing how rivalries work, it wouldn’t be surprising to see United do everything they can to make Pep’s life that much more miserable in the transfer window.

Leeds could make major statement with Said Benrahma move

With promotion to the Premier League secured, Leeds can look forward to an exciting post-season of being linked to players across Europe.

And one man who they will surely be excited at being touted with, is Brentford winger Said Benrahma.

The Algerian of course will be familiar to Marcelo Bielsa’s side having scored against them in a Championship fixture this season, and according to the latest reports, is now being eyed up by the Whites this summer.

The report claims that Bielsa wants the 24-year-old at Elland Road at all costs, and has made him his priority in terms of summer transfer targets. It’s further added that the Whites are readying an offer in the region of €26m (£23.6m) to lure him away from London.

And when you look at the kind of season he had, it’s easy to see why Benrahma is a man in demand. With 17 goals and nine assists, the attacker has been one of the main reasons behind Brentford’s charge for an automatic promotion place – they narrowly missed out on the final day.

As per Whoscored, he has averaged a very impressive 3.9 shots, 2.1 key passes and 3.1 dribbles per game in the Championship, and that level of creativity and goal threat is something that could really elevate Leeds’ attack.

His ability to take players on is second-to-none, and it’s no surprise that several people who have worked closely with him have raved about his technique and skills – including Brentford manager Thomas Frank.

He said: “For me he’s a quality player with top skills but also finishing skills. We actually worked very hard with him to arrive in the box at the right situations. In there when he’s turning and running at people – oof, I don’t want to defend against him!”.

His teammate Henrik Dalsgaard further underlined just how much of a difficult customer he can be for the opposition, saying: “He’s such a tricky player, you think you’ve got him locked in the corner and then, all of a sudden, he’s out”.

And if you needed to sum it all up, then look no further than Sam Saunders, Brentford B’s assistant coach, who claimed Benrahma “could nutmeg a mermaid”.

Benrahma may be plying his trade in the Championship, but all signs point to him being a Premier League quality player in the future. Victor Orta and co would be foolish not to snap him up ahead of the competition.

Aston Villa: Fans not happy over graphic of Jack Grealish in rivals colours on twitter

A lot of Aston Villa fans are not pleased to see a graphic on Twitter which shows fan favourite and club captain Jack Grealish in Birmingham colours.

The image also shows Jude Bellingham in the colours of Villa, prompting the Blues fan who found and shared the image to the site to say, “Just been sick in my mouth.”

With football postponed due to recent events, it seems like fans are trying to find ways to be entertained, and putting players in the colours of their rivals is a new trend which has not gone down well.

Both Grealish and Bellingham have had good seasons, and the two attackers have seen themselves linked with moves to Manchester United, per the Manchester Evening News and Sky Sports. Indeed, Grealish has had a great season, contributing to 38% of Villa’s goals in the Premier League this season with seven goals and six assists in 28 games, per SofaScore.

The two rivals despise each other but it seems like this image has managed to unite both fanbases as they both do not like the concept.

Manuel Pellegrini should trust West Ham’s youngsters in the FA Cup

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

West Ham United’s 4-0 loss at the hands of Oxford United was a complete humiliation that will likely live long in the memory.

Drawing Gillingham in the FA Cup will probably have brought up memories of that evening for many a Hammers fan, due to just how embarrassing a performance and result it was.

Lessons must be learned from that match if West Ham are to go on a cup run, but there is also no need to panic ahead of the club’s first match in England’s most prestigious domestic cup this season.

It would be easy to claim that Manuel Pellegrini should play the first-team to make sure his team progresses, but he can change things up by looking to the academy.

During that loss against Oxford, Nathan Holland was actually the only player from the U23s to step foot on the pitch – even he lasted less than an hour before being taken off.

The team facing Oxford was full of players who had been deemed not good enough to be starting in the league, with regressing players such as Pablo Zabaleta and Carlos Sanchez on show.

This is not to say that the Hammers should play a team full of kids, but using some of those who are on an upward trajectory, alongside a select number of regulars, would be a much better way to go than a whole team of reserve players.

Many of the club’s youngsters, including Anthony Scully and Joe Powell have shown that they can perform against Football League opposition in the EFL Trophy.

The former scored twice in the win against Newport County, while Powell also scored in that game, as well as the loss against Exeter City.

Pellegrini should definitely take the FA Cup seriously, but this is also an opportunity to help talented players, from a team that hasn’t lost a league game all season, to step up to first-team football.

Meanwhile, West Ham fans have been reacting to being drawn against Gillingham.

Sheffield Wednesday’s youth academy may benefit from the ongoing uncertainty

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Sheffield Wednesday are staring down the barrel of a monumentally challenging period after the EFL charged the club for financial misconduct.

It comes after the Owls sold their Hillsborough stadium to owner Dejphon Chansiri in order to offset any debts made in their 2017/18 accounts.

Although no punishment is yet to be announced, it is expected that the club could face a minimum of a 12-point deduction while further penalties such as a transfer embargo and even expulsion can’t be taken out of the equation just yet.

This saga is only going to rumble on as the club plan to contest the charges.

Wednesday have been hit with a restriction on signing players multiple times before so that would come as nothing new, but if that course of action does ensue, then it leaves manager Garry Monk in a precarious predicament.

Around 11 first team players see their contracts expire at the end of the season, and given that 21 different members of the squad have lined up in the blue and white stripes this season, the Owls boss could be without nearly an entire starting XI come the summer.

If they are indeed operating under an embargo, it will make any activity to replace them all that more difficult.

Monk may be forced to finally delve into the academy set up so that he can actually have a full squad for next season.

In doing so, it would bring one major benefit to the table as he will be able to eradicate one of the club’s long-term ‘on the pitch’ issues.

The current side are the oldest in the Championship – no player under the age of 23 has even enjoyed one minute on the Hillsborough turf either.

Therefore, despite all the potential negativity to come from this awful situation, the young players contracted at the club should up their game in case they do get called upon in the near future.

And there’s plenty of talent lying in wait as Monk has regularly called players into first-team training, even as recently as at the start of this very month.

We’ll have to wait and see whether or not the EFL makes an example out of Wednesday before such planning can take place.

Wolves have just received a major transfer boost ahead of the January window

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Wolverhampton Wanderers chairman Jeff Shi has hinted at a positive January transfer window for the club in a recent interview.

And supporters at Molineux should be anticipating some new signings in a few months.

What’s he said?

Nuno Santo’s side currently sit 12th in the Premier League table while in the Europa League they look primed to progress past the group stage as they occupy second place with a two-point cushion over third.

Watch Wolverhampton Wanderers Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

But in recent times, the Portuguese boss has suffered from a bit of an injury crisis, epitomised by Willy Boly’s sudden leg break during training last week, which may have scuppered his entire season.

The squad was already thin on numbers as BirminghamLive reported that they wanted to sign a centre-back during January, and that was even before the Frenchman’s injury.

But the west Midlands club have now received a boost from Shi, who said:

“If we need to strengthen the squad, we have the capacity to do it – immediately, in January.

“We want to do the right deal. We understand our squad is still growing, but if we want to compete at a higher level, we need to give Nuno and the team more support.

“We know where we are maybe a little bit weak.

“I keep talking with Nuno about it, so I think we will have a good window in January.”

Vital squad depth needed

This news obviously comes as a significant boost to everyone involved at the club, especially after talk that Fosun would decrease their investment.

Last season, Nuno only used a squad primarily built around 19 players with eight of those playing 34 or more matches in the Premier League, so it was rather lucky that they didn’t pick up any major injury woes on their way to that historic seventh place finish.

While this campaign is a similar story as 18 players have been used with eight of those playing eight of the ten top-flight games.

Even though that is the way the Portuguese native likes to operate – by having a tight-knit squad – the added involvement across both domestic and European fronts has meant that he needs to call upon his squad depth at times.

And that’s something he just doesn’t have right now as evident above, so this will allow him to do exactly that in January.
