Eoin Morgan out of ODI series with hand injury, Sam Billings to miss second game

England captain split webbing on his hand in first ODI, while Billings suffered shoulder injury

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Mar-2021England captain Eoin Morgan has been ruled out of the remaining two ODIs against India with a hand injury suffered during the opening match in Pune on Tuesday. Jos Buttler is set to take over the reins, with Liam Livingstone in line for a debut.Sam Billings, who sustained a shoulder injury in the field in the first ODI, will not be considered for Friday’s second game but could still return to play a part in the series. Dawid Malan, who was with the touring group as cover, has been drafted into the squad and is available for selection.Related

Stokes seeks upturn in fortunes after disappointing ODI return

Morgan required stitches after splitting the webbing between his thumb and index finger attempting to stop the ball, and was able to bat in England’s unsuccessful run chase. But he declared himself unfit after taking part in a fielding drill at training on Thursday.”I had the hand re-dressed before the start of training today but it quickly became apparent that I found myself protecting the injury and getting into the wrong positions to catch the ball,” he said. “There’s nowhere to hide on the field in international cricket these days, especially in limited-over formats so it didn’t require any great thought to make myself unavailable.”It was a freak injury and it’s extremely frustrating but there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s now just a case of letting the cut heal. I have every confidence in Jos and the rest of the squad coping without me.”Billings, too, came out to bat in the first ODI but did not train on Thursday as he continued to recover from a bruised collar bone. A decision on his availability for the third and final match, to be played on Sunday, will be taken in due course. Both players are due to be involved in the upcoming IPL, with England confirming that Morgan would remain in their bubble before joining up with Kolkata Knight Riders, where he is captain for the tournament that begins on April 9.Livingstone, the Lancashire batsman, played two T20Is for England in 2017 but is set to win his first cap in the 50-over format, on the back of a strong Big Bash with Perth Scorchers.”It’s obviously really exciting,” he said. “I’ve spent a lot of time around the group over the summer and winter so it’s nice ot finally get a chance and really looking forward to tomorrow. It’s never nice to see team-mates get injured but fingers crossed they’re not quite as serious as they could have been so speedy recoveries for them and hopefully they’re back fit for the IPL.”I’ve said before, the first time around was very different. I’ve been waiting for this chance for a while now so really excited. India have played some really good cricket, the back end of the T20 series and the one-dayer the other day so it’s a great chance to test myself against one of the best teams in the world.”It’s not just any old team that you’re trying to get into [with England]. The team are world champions and probably the best white-ball side in the world at the moment, so it’s not something you walk into. Being around the group, it makes you feel more familiar and comfortable about playing for England. I’ve really enjoyed my time around the group, even though I haven’t been playing, so now it’s my turn to go out and perform.”

Farke can forget about Szmodics after Leeds star’s 9/10 Hannover display

There's only so much you can take away from friendly games from the perspective of a fan, with poor results before the season starting never reading well, but the cobwebs could then be blown straight off back in the bread and butter of Championship action.

Leeds United have performed well so far this pre-season, overcoming League Two opponents Harrogate Town 3-0 in comfortable fashion, before venturing out to Germany for a training camp and the opportunity to test themselves against tricky opponents from further afield.

Mateo Joseph has particularly impressed those watching on this off-season, with the young Spanish hotshot potentially now kicking down the door for more first-team chances this campaign to come, after netting two quickfire goals against Hannover 96 last time out.

Joseph's performances so far this pre-season

Away from firing home two second-half goals in that behind closed doors 4-1 win against Leeds' Bundesliga 2 opponents recently, Joseph also shone back in Yorkshire when facing off against Simon Weaver's men.

He wouldn't get on the scoresheet against the lower league hosts, but he would set up Junior Firpo for the opening strike of this contest at the Exercise Stadium, after quick feet from Daniel James played the bright 20-year-old into space, for the ex-Barcelona man to then convert from close-range.

Mateo Joseph

Joseph has very much taken his chance in the spotlight so far, with Patrick Bamford nowhere to be found in and around Daniel Farke's teams picked so far owing to injury concerns, with his impact against Hannover steering the Whites to a second friendly win on the trot.

His positive showing in that behind closed doors friendly even saw Leeds Live journalist Beren Cross reward the tenacious youngster with a 9/10 rating in his post-match thoughts, describing the academy product's performance as 'so impressive' and yet another top display that could see him push for a more prominent first-team spot when competitive football comes into view.

Linking up with new signing Jayden Bogle for the final goal of the afternoon versus Hannover will surely excite Leeds fans, but there might well be less of a need now for the Championship promotion hopefuls to pursue any more lethal finishers in the form of Blackburn Rovers star Sammie Szmodics, if Joseph has a breakout campaign to come.

Joseph's importance next season

The in-demand Riversiders attacker could well fancy a move up to the Premier League over another season in the second tier anyway, as Ipswich Town attempt to get the on-fire forward in through the door this summer, having bagged a ridiculous 27 league goals from 44 games last season.

Joseph won't be as prolific in front of goal, you imagine, and that would be an unnecessary expectation to burden the homegrown gem with, but he could still play an important role in Leeds' attacking game going forward, away from Farke and Co having to splash cash lavishly.

Only averaging 12 minutes on the pitch in the second tier last campaign, there could be some regrets from Farke's end that he didn't chuck Joseph into games more often, over a leggy Bamford who struggled in the latter stages of the season to add to Leeds' firepower.

When Joseph was on the pitch, he looked lively and brave, showcased in his whirlwind showing away at Watford in March, where he needed just a minute of action on the Vicarage Road turf to fire home.

Stating that he hopes this season to come sees him explode even more in the men's game, Leeds fans would love to cheer on another young star straight off their production line, as promotion is eyed up once more.

The Mbappe transfer saga finally ended this summer as Real Madrid completed his signing for free after his Paris Saint-Germain contract ran out. It was one of the most talked-about moves in the last transfer window, however, the Frenchman has yet to live up to Los Blancos' expectations. In 14 matches across all competitions thus far, the France captain has scored eight times and provided two assists.

Per , manager Ancelotti has reportedly identified the player's weakness and has also urged him to take more responsibility in the attack. The Italian coach is worried about the 25-year-old's inability to act once he loses possession of the ball. Mbappe had a forgetful outing in El Clasico as he failed to find the back of the net and missed several chances against arch-rivals Barcelona who won 4-0.

Last week, Spanish journalist Romain Molina claimed that Real Madrid already 'regret' signing the Frenchman from PSG. In an interview, Mollina said, "They regret bringing him in. I guarantee that. I have spoken about it on and off (the record). It hasn’t been at all what they were expecting. It was a whim of [Florentino] Perez. It was only Perez who wanted him."

Edu agrees to pay release clause to sign £86 million forward for Arsenal

Arsenal, led by sporting director Edu Gaspar, have agreed to pay £86 million to sign a very in-form forward for manager Mikel Arteta, according to a report this week.

Edu and Arteta targeting four key signings for Arsenal

According to some reports, Arsenal are targeting four key signings before the summer window deadline on August 30 – coming in the form of a new goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward.

"Special" Arsenal player agrees to leave as West Ham chase quick deal

They want it done this week.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 18, 2024

As talks remain ongoing over a deal for Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori, as widely reported, a large section of supporters are especially keen to see a talismanic new striker come through the door at London Colney.

A goalscoring out-and-out centre-forward has long been seen by many critics as the final missing piece of Arteta's jigsaw. Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for Brentford star Ivan Toney to fill the role last summer, but murmurs of a move for the England international have since cooled.

While their fondness for Toney appears to have waned, the north Londoners are still believed to be in the market for a new striker if the right opportunity presents itself.

Arteta is rumoured to be a fan of Ajax striker Brian Brobbey as a possible alternative to Gabriel Jesus, while more marquee options like Napoli star Victor Osimhen have been mentioned in parts as well.

Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz bagged a brilliant 51 goals between them in all competitions last season, but Arteta apparently wants a striking partner for Havertz going forward next season.

Arsenal made a good proposal to RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko to fill the role earlier this window, but Edu and co were met with a swift rejection as the Slovenia international chose to stay in the Bundesliga and further his development at his current club.

There are other opportunities for Arsenal in the market, but they may have to invest heavily, with an interesting report now claiming they're willing to do just that.

Arsenal agree to pay £86 million to sign Viktor Gyokeres

As per Leonino, via Standard Sport [17/07/2024, 07:00], Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres remains on Arsenal's wanted list after being heavily linked earlier this year.

It is now claimed that Arsenal have agreed to pay Sporting £86 million to sign Gyokeres, which is believed to be the value of his release clause. The Swede, called "unplayable" by former Coventry City teammate Maxime Biamou, scored a phenomenal 43 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions last season.

Gyokeres bagged a further 15 assists as well, totalling 58 goal contributions over what was a truly exceptional debut season in Portugal. There is a growing clamor for his services as a result, and it will be interesting to see if this report comes to fruition as Edu looks to end the club's long search for a new vocal point up front.

Arteta personally wants Arsenal to sign £30 million Jesus alternative

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is personally after a £30 million alternative option to striker Gabriel Jesus, and it is believed the player in question has his heart set on a move to the Premier League.

Edu and Arteta targeting new striker for this summer

Helped by sporting director Edu, the general consensus for a while has been that the north Londoners are keen to bring in a new number nine ahead of another title tussle with Man City next season.

Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz netted 51 goals between them in all competitions last season, with the latter proving very effective in his makeshift forward role despite a slow start to his debut campaign at the Emirates.

However, it is believed Arsenal still want a new natural striking option, and have been linked with a host of very interesting names. Reports out of Portugal recently stated that Arsenal have held talks over signing Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon, and even Napoli star Victor Osimhen is on Edu's radar as they work their way through targets.

The Gunners attempted a deal for RB Leipzig sensation Benjamin Sesko earlier this summer, as widely reported by reliable media sources, but the Slovenia star instead decided to sign a new contract with his current club.

After failing in their pursuit of Sesko, Edu is rumoured to have been working on different striker targets since. Ajax star Brian Brobbey, who scored 22 goals and assisted 12 more in all competitions last season, is on the Gunners' list.

The 22-year-old's impressive season in the Eredivisie earned him a call-up to the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024, where he will soon face off against England in the semi-finals on Wednesday evening.

Arteta personally wants Brobbey at Arsenal

According to The Sun, Arsenal boss Arteta personally wants Brobbey as an alternative to Jesus, but Man United manager Erik ten Hag is also a real admirer of the Dutchman and considering an attempt to bring him to Old Trafford.

As a result, both sides could be set for a tug-of-war over Brobbey, amid claims he'll cost around £30 million to prise away from Amsterdam. Taking into account the forward's impressive goal tally, £30m could be seen as a bargain price, leaving little wonder both Arteta and ten Hag go head-to-head for Brobbey's services.

"Because he is so fast and strong, he was very annoying for the defenders of PSV and dangerous for Ajax," said former striker Pierre van Hooijdonk after Brobbey's performance against PSV Eindhoven in the KNVB Cup final last year.

"Leave Brobbey alone. In my eyes, he should always play. Otherwise, Ajax will have too many attackers who want the ball in their feet and the team will be too predictable."

Approach imminent: Everton want to sign "special" £20k-a-week winger

Everton are believed to be readying an approach for a "special" player in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh update.

Everton transfer news

The Blues continue to be linked with new signings ahead of next season, with Newcastle United youngster Yankuba Minteh a player who was being looked at, though he now seems set to join Lyon.

Iliman Ndiaye is a target who has been lined up as a replacement for the possible loss of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the Marseille ace described as a "ridiculously talented" footballer who could add quality and unpredictability in the final third.

Iliman Ndiaye for Marseille.

Meanwhile, Wilfred Ndidi stood out as one of the leading midfielders in the Championship last season, playing an important role in Leicester City returning to the Premier League, and he is being looked at as an upgrade on the ageing Idrissa Gueye in the middle of the park at Goodison Park.

Midfield additions could also be important for Everton before the 2024/25 campaign gets underway, and Roma midfielder Edoardo Bove is also reportedly wanted by the Blues, being seen as a player who could link effectively with Jack Harrison.

Everton want "special" Championship winger

According to Football Insider, Everton are "readying an approach" for Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto this summer, with the Blues "turning their attention to a new move" for the Italian.

The Merseysiders came close to snapping up the £20,000-a-week attacker last summer and "have continued to closely monitor his progress at Leeds". It is also believed that he is "keen to move on after failing to secure promotion back to the Premier League with the Whites".

Gnonto could be just what Everton and Sean Dyche are looking for in terms of attacking reinforcements in the summer window, standing out as a young player with a huge amount of potential.

Admittedly, the youngster was outperformed by Crysencio Summerville for Leeds last season, but that's not to say that he didn't impress for the Whites, too, scoring eight goals in the Championship, which is more than any Blues player managed in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, former coach Michael Skubala has lauded him in the past, saying: "He’s a great lad, he’s a special player. He’s a credit to Leeds, he’s a credit to himself and he’s a really nice player to work with."

At just 20, Gnonto is still raw in aspects of his game, but his all-round end product should only improve with age, and Everton could end up enjoying the best years of his career.

Imagine him & Minteh: Everton one of the favourites to sign £20m star

The Toffees are at the front of the pack for this Premier League star.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 24, 2024

To be a 13-cap Italy international this quickly says a lot about his ability and long-term ceiling, and if the Blues can beat others to his signature this summer, it could end up being a wonderful piece of business as the years pass.
