Barcelona: £355k-p/w star asked to take pay cut

A report has claimed that Barcelona veteran Jordi Alba has been issued with an ultimatum of needing to accept a reduction to his salary or leave the club this summer.

What's going on with Barcelona and Alba?

The veteran left-back has lost his place in the starting XI this term following the emergence of young sensation Alejandro Balde, but has still made 22 appearances in all competitions, with Xavi describing him as "key" earlier in the season.

With his contract running until 2024, it seemed that the Spaniard would stay until his deal expired, but these plans may have been scuppered as Barcelona's financial troubles continue to haunt them.

Alba had already taken a pay cut in 2021, reducing his salary by 25% and deferring a large part of his wages, but it now seems he will have to further lower his income if he wishes to stay at the club.

A report in SPORT confirmed this, claiming that Barcelona expect Alba to be understanding about the situation, which requires the club to significantly lower their wage bill, while other high earners such as Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Frenkie de Jong could be asked to follow suit.

If he does not agree to a reduction, he could be sold or even have his contract terminated in order to reduce the wage bill. With Balde a current starter and Marcos Alonso able to provide cover, it seems that Alba's standing within the squad has diminished despite being one of their longest-serving players.

Is it time for Alba to leave Barcelona?

The £355k-per-week star has made over 450 appearances for the club since arriving over ten years ago, and the former Valencia defender is arguably one of the finest full-backs in the history of the club.

Alba was part of the treble-winning side of 2014/15, and has won five La Liga titles during his time at Camp Nou.

The ultimatum issued to him may call an ugly end to what has been an incredibly successful period at Barcelona, but the problems with Financial Fair Play mean that sacrifices have to be made, and Alba is an unfortunate victim of previous mistakes at boardroom level.

He would follow the likes of Gerard Pique in departing the club, and if Sergio Busquets also leaves at the end of the season, it would mark the end of an era for the Blaugrana as three long-serving superstars would have all left in the space of two years following the departure of Lionel Messi.

Chelsea: Potter must unleash Badiashile

Chelsea travel to the King Power Stadium to face off against Leicester City in the Premier League this afternoon, and manager Graham Potter will be hoping for a third successive victory for the first time at the helm of the west London outfit.

With two victories from two matches, against Leeds United in the league and Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, there is optimism anew among the Blues after a candidly dreadful campaign has left the proud outfit slumped in tenth and out of both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in the early stages of the respective competitions.

And while Chelsea remain 11 points adrift of Tottenham Hotspur in fourth – though with a game in hand – the ostensible calibre of the extravagant and expansive squad could well forge a momentous surging run toward prominence once again, with owner Todd Boehly having pumped over £550m into the team since the summer.

The Foxes have been battling their own turmoil this term, just two points and three places above the division’s relegation zone having played 25 matches, and could find their current run in the top-flight – an illustrious spell that has left the club league champions, FA Cup winners and Champions League contenders – draws to a resentful close.

Will Benoit Badiashile start vs Leicester?

The 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night to overturn a one-goal deficit against the Yellow Wall was the first truly resounding result under Potter’s wing, an indication that his team can indeed compete at the highest level.

The win was carried out in the absence of £35m winter signing Benoit Badiashile, who was omitted from the Champions League squad due to player congestion, though the ace has indeed been fantastic thus far in the Premier League, and will hope to find a place back among the starting fold against the Foxes.

As per Sofascore, the 21-year-old titan boasts the Blues’ highest average rating in the top-flight this term at 7.32, keeping four clean sheets from six matches, completing 91% of his passes and making 0.5 key passes per match, while also illustrating his defensive aptitude with 1.7 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game, also winning 65% of his gourd duels.

And with FBref ranking the titan among the top 12% of centre-backs for shot-creating actions and the top 10% for progressive passes per 90, illustrating the impact the imposing ace could have in crafting transitional play from the back, pumping life into an outfit that has scored just 24 goals from 25 league games this year.

His dynamic capabilities will indeed be important against Brendan Rodgers’ outfit, who have recently put four past both Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur, dangerous as any team in the country when clicking together.

Once lauded as “tenacious” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the French colossus is swiftly becoming imperative to his outfit’s domestic success, and while the attention will be on the effectiveness of the frontline, Badiashile’s passing prowess and steely resolve will be invaluable in crafting a robust base for Potter’s team.

Newcastle eyeing swoop for Antonee Robinson

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in signing Antonee Robinson in the summer transfer window…

What’s the latest on Antonee Robinson to Newcastle?

According to Football Insider, the Magpies are eyeing up the Fulham left-back as their number-one target to bolster their options in that position ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The report claims that the club have been scouting the USA international, formerly of Wigan, but could face competition from Inter, AC Milan, and Manchester City, who are all looking at the dynamo.

It is stated that the club ‘desperately’ want to improve their left-back choices and would like to sign a younger full-back who offers more of an attacking threat than Dan Burn.

Is Robinson better than Dan Burn?

Eddie Howe could land an upgrade on his current first-choice in that position by securing a deal to sign Robinson ahead of City and the two Italian giants this summer.

The former Brighton defender has averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.84 across 23 appearances for the Magpies in the Premier League so far this season.

Burn has been a solid defender at the back for the Toon with 1.9 tackles and interceptions per game and has won 55% of his duels in the top flight, which shows that the gem can hold his own in physical contests and regularly cuts out opposition attacks.

Robinson, meanwhile, has made 2.8 tackles and interceptions per match and won 55% of his battles in 21 outings for Fulham in the division this term.

These statistics indicate that the 25-year-old enforcer could offer a similar level of defensive efficiency whilst completing more defensive actions to win the ball back for his side.

On the ball, the USA international, who is five years younger than Burn, has created 15 chances in 21 matches, six more than the current Toon man has managed (nine) in 22 games.

Alexandre Gangué-Ruzic once hailed the battler as “electric” and described his progression of the ball as “fun to watch”. Indeed, Robinson is in the top 10% of left-backs in Europe’s top five leagues over the last 365 days for progressive carries per 90 (3.40), whilst the Newcastle defender is in the worst 1% (0.60).

This suggests that the Fulham defender would be a sizeable upgrade on the 30-year-old in terms of what he offers in possession, in both carrying the ball forwards to progress play and in creating opportunities for his teammates, which is why Howe must bring him in this summer.

Aston Villa eyeing Nico Williams

An update has emerged on Aston Villa and their interest in Nico Williams ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

According to Spanish outlet AS, via Sport Witness, the Villans are one of two Premier League clubs who are interested in signing the Athletic Bilbao forward at the end of the season.

The report claims that Unai Emery’s side and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have both tested the ground ahead of a possible swoop to sign the Spain international ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

It is stated that the flanker has a €50m (£45m) release clause in his contract, which expires in 2024, and that the attacker has been ‘loyal’ to his current club so far.

Leon Bailey upgrade

Emery could land an upgrade on current Villa winger Leon Bailey by beating the Reds to the signing of the Bilbao star in the summer window.

The Jamaican has been a regular starter for the club in the Premier League this season but has struggled to deliver consistently impressive performances out wide.

In 17 top-flight starts, the attacker has delivered four goals and two assists and averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.68, which places him 16th in the squad.

Bailey has been far from one of Villa’s top performers in the division this term and has not done enough in the final third to prove that he can be a consistent threat in the final third.

Williams, however, who is five years younger than the Villans forward, has enjoyed a better campaign in LaLiga with Athletic Bilbao as the 20-year-old has averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.82 and provided three goals and five assists, whilst also scoring three times and assisting one in five cup appearances.

This means that the gem, whose “phenomenal” form was hailed by talent scout Jacek Kulig earlier this term, has racked up six goals and six assists in 25 appearances – compared to Bailey’s five goals and two assists in 23 games for Villa in all competitions – and could offer a greater attacking threat for Emery’s side.

The Spanish dynamo has also averaged more progressive carries, successful take-ons, and progressive passes per 90 than Bailey over the last 365 days, proving he is an incredibly direct individual.

It also suggests that the Bilbao man could offer more to Villa’s build-up play by getting the ball up the pitch from deeper positions, dribbling past players or breaking lines to find teammates in promising areas.

Therefore, Williams could be an upgrade on the former Bayer Leverkusen man, both in terms of his role in the build-up and his consistency in the final third, whilst also having five more years of development to go through, which is why Emery must sign the forward this summer.

Man United must sign Victor Osimhen

Manchester United are in full flow under the tutelage of manager Erik ten Hag, riding a resurgent campaign thus far and still competing across every front, but the need for a world-class centre-forward remains paramount.

While imposing powerhouse Wout Weghorst was signed on loan this month to fill the hole left by Cristiano Ronaldo, who terminated his contract by mutual consent, there indeed remains a vacancy for a leading European goal-scorer to spearhead the attack of the new era of the club over the coming years, with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen among the leading candidates for transfer at Old Trafford according to reports in Italy.

It would be a costly move, however, with any deal potentially set to cost in the region of €140m (£123m).

Haaland 2.0

The Premier League giants will undoubtedly be buoyed by the swift rekindling of former fluidity, having finished in sixth place in the division last term.

But in order to maintain the continuation of changes that are finally re-asserting the Red Devils’ authority after such tumultuous fortunes since Sir Alex Ferguson left his iconic managerial position in 2013, the crafting of a refined new skeleton must not waver.

And by landing the 24-year-old “machine” – as dubbed by reporter Mina Rzouki – that is Osimhen,  who has scored 13 goals and provided four assists from only 15 appearances in the Italian top-flight this term, the unabating flow of goals would fall into place at Old Trafford.

By forging a transfer, Ten Hag might actually have his answer to Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, who has become something of a problem for the Premier League since his arrival last summer.

According to FBref, Haaland is indeed one of the most comparable players to the Napoli hotshot, ranked third on the list of ‘similar players’.

Haaland has obliterated the standard of what was considered superlative when assessing first-rate strikers in English football, with his 31 goals from 26 appearances across all competitions an unprecedented tally of offensive precision at the Etihad Stadium.

Osimhen, who ranks among the top 3% of forwards in Europe’s top five leagues for rate of non-penalty goals and the top 8% for touches in the offensive box indeed offers an arresting similarity to his Norwegian positional peer’s own arsenal, with both players mastering the fine art of pace and deadly precision in the penalty area.

Ten Hag will be all too aware of his side’s neighbours, who indeed have made much of the noise over the past decade in the prestigious footballing city, and Haaland’s introduction to City boss Pep Guardiola’s plans is a truly concerning conundrum for United, who are seeking their own clarity over their stature as a leading force.

Journalist Oluwashina Okeleji heralded Osimhen as a “monster”, and John Murtough could swiftly eradicate every ounce of worry by successfully swooping for Napoli’s Nigerian phenomenon, who could even the playing field and bring the Theatre of Dreams that crucial step closer to the return to former glory, and the Man United board must put issues over Napoli’s pricing and make their move.

Rangers: Barisic was a semi-final calamity

Glasgow Rangers came from behind once again in the Michael Beale era as they beat Aberdeen 2-1 at Hampden Park in the semi-finals of the League Cup.

Bojan Miovski thought he had given the Dons the lead in the 16th minute as he ran in behind the Gers backline and slotted past Allan McGregor, only for the linesman’s flag, and then VAR, to rule out the strike for offside.

Sakala had an opportunity to put Rangers in front after 32 minutes as he followed up on Ryan Kent’s saved shot and blazed wide from just behind the penalty spot.

Aberdeen then made it 1-0 just before half-time as Miovski smartly left a ball through to him, because he was in an offside position, and then repositioned himself to score from Matthew Kennedy’s cross.

Ryan Jack eventually found the equaliser for Rangers in the second half as he linked up with Alfredo Morelos to fire in and level the scores at 1-1 just after the hour mark.

Aberdeen were reduced to ten men in stoppage time as central defender Anthony Stewart was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Sakala.

The Light Blues took the lead in the third minute of extra-time as Kemar Roofe was in the right place at the right time to make it 2-1 after Scott Wright’s cross.

Rangers ultimately won the match and secured their place in the final but Beale should be disappointed with the performance of one of his starting players – Borna Barisic.

The left-back struggled with the high line being deployed at times and let himself down for Miovski’s strike in the first half. Former Gers winger Neil McCann described the Croatian international’s defending for the opening goal as “horrific” on BBC Sportsound, whilst The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell dubbed the concession a “calamity”.

He was not switched on to Kennedy’s run past him and stopped playing in anticipation of Miovski being flagged offside, only to then be caught out as the Aberdeen winger crossed for the striker to make it 1-0.

Barisic was also booked in the 87th minute as he clumsily brought down Kennedy and that summed up his game as he struggled to deal with the threat that the opposition posed on the counter-attack.

The £18k-per-week liability should be thanking Jack and Roofe for sparing his blushes as the defender could have been in for heavy criticism had his error for the first goal ended up being the decisive moment in the game.

So, whilst Stewart may be seen as the villain for Rangers, due to his red card tackle on Sakala, Barisic was the real villain for the Light Blues with a calamitous performance at left-back.

Thankfully, his error did not cost the club a place in the final of the competition and, hopefully, the left-back will be able to redeem himself in the final, if he is selected.

Arsenal: Edu leading Milinkovic-Savic race

Arsenal are currently leading the race to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian publication Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness), who claim that Arsenal’s ‘interest is confirmed’ in the SS Lazio central midfielder, with Edu said to have already held ‘talks with the agent’ of the 27-year-old.

The report goes on to suggest that the Gunners are ‘considered in pole position in the race’ to sign the Serbia international this winter, before adding that, if a deal cannot be struck with the Serie A side in January, Edu is likely to return in the summer.

Finally, it is claimed that, while Milinkovic-Savic did reject Arsenal in the past, Mikel Arteta’s side have now been ‘reconsidered’ by the playmaker, with Lazio said to be looking for a figure in the region of €50m (£44m) in order to part with the midfielder.

He’s the “same level as Kevin De Bruyne”

Considering the quite incredible returns Milinkovic-Savic has achieved during his time with Lazio, coupled with central midfield undoubtedly being one area of the pitch in which Arsenal are lacking any real strength in depth, the argument that the 27-year-old would make a fantastic addition to Arteta’s table-topping side this winter is an extremely easy one to make.

Indeed, over his 14 Serie A appearances so far this season, the £53m-rated talent has been in astonishing attacking form, having already scored three goals, registered seven assists and created seven big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.5 shots, making 1.4 key passes and completing 0.9 dribbles per game.

The £101k-per-week midfielder has also caught the eye in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 1.8 tackles, one interception, 1.6 clearances and winning 7.1 duels – at a success rate of 55% – per match, in addition to playing an average of 2.7 long balls and completing 39.9 passes – at a success rate of 79% – per fixture.

These returns have seen the Spain-born playmaker average a quite breathtaking Sofascore match rating of 7.40, not only ranking him as Maurizio Sarri’s best performer in the league but also as the second-best player in the top flight of Italian football as a whole – playing a key role in fourth-placed Lazio get off to an exceptional start to the 2022/23 campaign.

Furthermore, according to FBref, Milinkovic-Savic currently ranks in the top 3% of midfielders in Europe’s big five leagues for non-penalty goals per 90, as well as the top 5% for shots, the top 2% for assists, the top 3% for touches in the opposition penalty area and the top 6% for aerials won – demonstrating just how deadly the 27-year-old is going forwards.

So impressive has the Serbian star been this year that Ciro Immobile – the midfielder’s teammate at Lazio – went as far as to compare Milinkovic-Savic to Manchester City maestro Kevin De Bruyne, with the Italy international stating earlier this season:

“Trust me, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is magic. He’s on the same level as Kevin de Bruyne.”

And, considering the extraordinary returns the Lazio talisman has achieved in 2022/23, this comparison will not come as a surprise to anyone with a half-decent knowledge of the game, while the prospect of Arsenal landing their own version of De Bruyne for just £44m this winter will undoubtedly be an extremely exciting prospect for everyone involved with the club.

Rangers: Beale must move for teenager

Glasgow Rangers have been linked with a move for Jobe Bellingham in recent times, although the Ibrox outfit are likely to face competition for the teenager’s signature.

What’s the word?

A report from TEAMtalk last week named the Old Firm giants as one of the clubs who are interested in the 17-year-old, with the midfield having just 18 months remaining on his existing deal at St Andrew’s.

The piece does also suggest, however, that the likes of Newcastle United and Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund are also firmly in the mix for the emerging Birmingham City prodigy, while Liverpool have also previously been mooted as a possible suitor.

Transfer insider Dean Jones – speaking to GIVEMESPORT – has now provided his verdict on that interest from the Light Blues, with the journalist stating that there would be no harm in making an approach for the Englishman, even if he may be on course to join his brother Jude in Germany.

The respected source stated: “It’s worth a try. I would be surprised if this is the path that Jobe takes, but he obviously has a lot to consider right now.

“And that includes following Jude Bellingham’s path and going to Borussia Dortmund because from what I hear, that is a genuine consideration right now.”

Beale’s first masterstroke

New boss Michael Beale has enjoyed a winning return to Glasgow since his appointment last month, with the former Gers assistant having recorded two wins from his opening two games to somewhat lift the doom and gloom surrounding the club following the dismal end to Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s time in charge.

The former Queens Park Rangers head coach won’t be getting ahead of himself despite that positive start to life in the dugout, however, with the likelihood being that the 42-year-old will have money to spend in the January window in order to bolster his charges.

The Bromley-born ace could well pull off the first transfer masterstroke of his tenure by bringing the aforementioned Bellingham to Scotland, with the highly-coveted figure already making waves south of the border.

Currently following in the footsteps of his brother – who racked up 44 appearances for Birmingham before departing for Germany at the age of just 17 – the promising talent has already made 13 outings in all competitions so far this term at first-team level, notably earning his first start against Sunderland last month.

Although the teen ace has only made a fleeting impression in the senior ranks so far, the signs are already there that he could well be a star of the future, having notably earned praise from manager John Eustace, who stated:

“Jobe is very level-headed, he gets his head down and he works hard. Jobe is an individual who has had a fantastic season until now. We’ve given him lots of minutes and he is developing really well. Obviously we gave him his first start in the league against Sunderland which was a good experience for him.

“Everyone is very proud of Jobe and the way he is getting on with his business. He has only just turned 17 so he is still such a young lad. But even though he’s 17, the way he is handling everything on the training field and off the field is a credit to himself.”

Also lauded as “technically very, very good” by Eustace, young Bellingham is likely a player whom Beale would relish the chance to nurture and develop, with it set to be a masterstroke if he can fend off the competition and get a deal wrapped up in 2023.
