Can Sri Lanka keep out South Africa's quicks?

Big Picture

Just how far this Sri Lanka top order has to go in ODIs could not have been made more clear in the first match on Sunday. Batting coach Thilan Samaraweera said his team had spoken about seeing out the likes of Kagiso Rabada in the first 10 overs, before taking more risks against the less experienced South Africa bowlers later in the innings, but the hosts nevertheless found themselves 36 for 5 in the ninth over, the game already virtually lost inside 40 minutes.Kusal Perera and Thisara Perera then struck up an encouraging partnership worth 92, but it never looked like the kind of stand that could alter the game’s outcome. This is exactly how so many Sri Lanka innings have played out over the past 18 months – the majority of the batsmen failing dramatically, while one or two others make half-decent contributions that serve only to make the loss less abject.South Africa will be glad to have tasted victory for the first time on the tour, but they know they are not exactly a world-beating ODI unit either. They have spoken about blooding young players in this series, and on Sunday, one of those players, left-arm wristspinner Tabraiz Shamsi, came good, taking 4 for 33 to wipe out the Sri Lanka lower order after the seamers had made those early breakthroughs. With regular spinner Imran Tahir rested for this series, Shamsi has a gold-plated chance to carve out a place for himself in the ODI XI.Others, such as Wiaan Mulder, Aiden Markram and Lungi Ngidi, also have opportunities to embed themselves in the side as the series goes on.

In the spotlight

Normally, South Africa tours of Sri Lanka mean runs for Hashim Amla. In ODIs, there is no other country he would prefer batting in, having hit two hundreds in his six innings on the island, with an average of 62. On this tour, though, Amla’s scores (across Tests and the first ODI) have read 15, 0, 19, 6, and 19. And while his prowess against spin has truly stood out on previous trips, spinners have dismissed him on each occasion this time, so far. He had also crossed fifty only once in six innings in the ODI series against India earlier this year. South Africa’s coaches are certain he will rebound, but at 35, a few more modest scores could get fans wondering whether this is merely a slump or a more permanent decline.AFP

The man to dismiss Amla in that first ODI was Akila Dananjaya whose new-and-improved googly (he has been working on pushing it faster through the air), fooled the batsman and rattled his stumps. Dananjaya is not always a penetrative bowler, but he is very rarely expensive, which on its own is a not insignificant virtue in this modest Sri Lanka attack. While Sri Lanka attempt to get the rest of their team in order, Dananjaya has done enough over the past eight months to suggest he is a player worth investing in. Even if he has the occasional bad game – though he really doesn’t have many of those – Sri Lanka might do well to play him in as many matches as possible leading up to the World Cup.

Team news

South Africa are likely to keep their XI from Sunday, which means Heinrich Klaasen will probably continue to sit out, while Mulder plays as an allrounder.South Africa (possible): 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Aiden Markram, 4 Faf du Plessis (capt), 5 JP Duminy, 6 David Miller, 7 Wiaan Mulder, 8 Andile Phehlukwayo, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Tabraiz Shamsi, 11 Lungi NgidiSri Lanka will be without fast bowler Lahiru Kumara, who split a webbing on his left hand during fielding drills. Kasun Rajitha is most likely to play in his place. They may also think about handing left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya a debut, with Lakshan Sandakan the most likely to sit out if that happens.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Kusal Perera, 2 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 3 Upul Tharanga, 4 Kusal Mendis, 5 Angelo Mathews (capt.), 6 Shehan Jayasuriya, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Akila Dananjaya, 9 Suranga Lakmal, 10 Lakshan Sandakan, 11 Kasun Rajitha

Pitch and conditions

Despite Sri Lanka’s collapse, there were no major demons in the Dambulla track on Sunday, and another good one-day pitch is expected. No rain is forecast for the day.

Stats and trivia

  • In seven innings so far this year, Amla averages 24.71, with a strike rate of 80. His career average is 50.02, with a strike rate of 89.
  • From 18 bowling innings, Akila Dananjaya has a career economy rate of 4.97. This is despite his having played in one of the weakest Sri Lanka ODI bowling attacks in the last 20 years.
  • Sri Lanka have now lost nine ODIs in a row to South Africa – a losing streak that goes back to July 2014.

Southampton: Martin’s 5 ft 9 ‘monster’ has made himself undroppable

When Russell Martin took over the reins at Southampton, the embarrassment of riches that he inherited and the quality he was able to add in the window meant anything other than promotion would have been classed as a failure.

He began life as many expected, guiding the Saints to three victories from their first four and while their attack was dominating, his defence was being ripped apart and sooner rather than later his side would be on the receiving end of a hammering.

Few would have expected it to come from a Sunderland side who only scored four in as many matches prior, managing to thrash Martin's side 5-0 at the Stadium of Light.

That gut-wrenching display followed three more as Southampton suffered damning defeats against Leicester, Ipswich and Middlesbrough, handing the latter their first victory of the season.

Many would have expected a fifth to follow when in-form Leeds arrived at St Mary's, however, they ended their September horror show with a 3-1 victory over the Whites as goals from Adam Armstrong and Will Smallbone injected some much-needed positivity back into the club, relieving the pressure from the underfire Martin.

Who were Southampton's best performers vs Leeds?

Martin is widely recognised in the EFL for utilising a possession-heavy style that lacks substance, dominating long periods of the match without providing the killer instinct at the top end of the pitch.

Against Leeds, though, Martin's side uncharacteristically had less of the ball (47% to 53%), made fewer passes (442/492) and fewer shots (10/15) but were ruthless when the opportunities arrived, scoring three of their five shots on target, as per SofaScore.

Adam Armstrong, who was integral to providing that clinical edge in the final third, chalked up an xG of 0.80, landed three efforts on target and scored two of them as the Englishman rose up to the occasion, as did Will Smallbone.

The 23-year-old has been subject to criticism for having gone missing in the Saints midfield but against Leeds, he put in a phenomenal display, completing 81% of his passes, attempting three duels, making two clearances and capping off his all-round performance with a well-taken goal, via SofaScore.

Armstrong and Smallbone weren't the only standout performers as Kamaldeen Sulemana wreaked havoc in the Leeds defence and showed glimpses of why they made him their club record signing in January.

How did Kamaldeen Sulemana perform vs Leeds?

Ahead of their home fixture against Stoke City, Martin hinted at rotating his side to navigate through the busy schedule.

He said: "We must be realistic and accept that we are probably going to have to rotate a little bit over the next two games.

"With the medical team and the sports science team, we will do our very best to make them recover as quickly as possible."

Southampton forwardKamaldeen Sulemana.

Regardless of tiredness – as the saying goes – you shouldn't change a winning side and one man who should be immune from rotation is Sulemana following his performance against Leeds, with Martin lauding him as a "monster".

Full of praise for the 21-year-old, who has struggled since making a £22m switch from Stade Rennais in January, Martin waxed lyrical about his performance even further, saying:

"He’s an incredible talent. I genuinely believe he can probably play wherever he wants at some point in his career if he puts everything that he has in the right place and in the right direction."

There's no wonder why his manager was over the moon with his display as the Ghanian assisted twice, successfully completed three of his four dribbles, made three tackles, won 60% of his ground duels and completed two key passes.

Sulemana's influence on the match was unrelenting and although Martin will likely rest some of his side against Stoke, the highly rated winger – who was once dubbed as "exceptional" by Erik ten Hag – is surely undroppable after his sensational performance against the Whites.

Wolves: Old Gold star saw his value rise by a staggering 19,900%

Wolverhampton Wanderers attempted to bolster their squad during the recent summer transfer window as they brought in eight new signings.

Who did Wolves sign this summer?

The Old Gold, who started the window with Julen Lopetegui and ended it with Gary O'Neil in the dugout, made seven permanent additions to the group alongside one loan deal.

They snapped up Tommy Doyle on a season-long loan from Premier League and Champions League champions Manchester City, in a move that saw Matheus Nunes go the other way on a permanent basis.

Wolves also brought in Matheus Cunha, Matt Doherty, Tom King, Enso Gonzalez, Boubacar Traore, Santiago Bueno, and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde to improve their options across the pitch.

Wolves defender Matt Doherty.

Doherty was a particularly interesting addition to the team as the Republic of Ireland international joined on a free transfer three years after his move away from the club to sign for Tottenham Hotspur.

Wolves played a masterclass with the right-back during his first spell at Molineux as Mick McCarthy struck gold by signing him in 2010.

How much did Wolves sign Doherty for in 2010?

The former Old Gold head coach was reportedly impressed by the then-18-year-old full-back during a pre-season friendly against Irish side Bohemians and swooped to secure his services for a fee within the region of £75k in 2010.

McCarthy took a relatively small gamble, given the size of the figure spent on him, by signing Doherty and it turned out to be an outstanding decision by the ex-Ipswich boss.

The teenage defender made 33 appearances for the club's U21 side and enjoyed loan spells with Hibernian and Bury FC before he made his first-team breakthrough at Molineux.

His first season of semi-regular senior football came during the 2012/13 campaign as he played 13 Championship matches on their way to relegation to League One, where he then featured in 18 games throughout their promotion season.

Wolves defender Matt Doherty.

Doherty then established himself as a regular starter during the 2014/15 term as he assisted five goals in 33 Championship outings.

Including that term, he went on to play 33 or more league matches for Wolves in each of his last six seasons for the club, which included four second division campaigns and two in the Premier League.

How much did Wolves sell Doherty for?

The Old Gold eventually opted to cash in on the defender for a reported fee of £15m in the summer of 2020 as Tottenham secured his signature.

This came after Doherty produced an eye-catching eight goals and 11 assists in 74 Premier League appearances for Wolves across the 2018/19 and 2019/20 campaigns.

Former Tottenham defender Matt Doherty.

The Republic of Ireland international, who was hailed as a "machine" by journalist Tim Spiers, proved himself to be an excellent attacking threat from a right wing-back position and this caught the eye of those at Spurs, who decided to splash out to sign him.

This meant that Doherty's value soared by a staggering 19,900%, from the initial £75k that was paid to Bohemians, over the course of his ten-year stay at Molineux.

Evidently, McCarthy well and truly struck gold by snapping him up from the Irish side after being impressed by his pre-season display against the Old Gold. Indeed, it ended up making the club an incredible profit whilst also giving them a reliable performer who racked up 303 first-team appearances.

Medical Booked: Big Man United Update On Sofyan Amrabat

Manchester United target Sofyan Amrabat could become a Red Devils player on deadline day, with a big update emerging in the last 24 hours.

Are Man United signing Sofyan Amrabat?

Erik ten Hag and those at Old Trafford have been relatively busy so far this summer, with marquee big-money deals for Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund from Inter Milan, Chelsea and Atalanta all sealed earlier in the window.

Another player who is also on course to move to Manchester is Tottenham left-back Sergio Reguilon, with a verbal agreement in place with Spurs over a loan deal.

There could be room for one more eye-catching transfer, though, with Amrabat heavily linked with a move to Manchester in recent weeks. The Morocco international previously worked under Ten Hag at FC Utrecht, registering 10 assists in 50 appearances under the Dutchman and appears to be a top target to bolster the club’s midfield ranks even further.

Recent reports have claimed that United saw an initial loan offer turned down by Fiorentina for Amrabat, who has been training away from the first-team squad. However, it now looks as if there has been progress over a transfer, with Football Insider sharing an update on Man United and Amrabat.

The report claims that the Red Devils have made a breakthrough in their pursuit of the player, with Fiorentina giving the midfielder the green light to travel to Manchester for talks and a medical after late-night developments on Wednesday.

It is added that United are putting the finishing touches to a marquee move, but don’t add whether a move will be a loan or permanent transfer.

Erik ten Hag

How good is Sofyan Amrabat?

Amrabat is naturally a defensive midfielder who can play slightly further forward in a central midfield role if needed and has been with Fiorentina since 2020, making 107 appearances for his current employers.

The 27-year-old appears to be at the top of his game right now with a career-high €30m Transfermarkt valuation, a figure which rocketed following a successful World Cup in Qatar last year.

Hailed as a "monster" by broadcaster Carlo Garganese, Amrabat was praised by former England manager Fabio Capello for his displays in Qatar which saw Morocco reach the semi-finals, with the Italian describing Amrabat as a 'great runner' and the 'Gennaro Gattuso of Morocco'.

"If I have to name one name, besides the well-known Hakim Ziyech and Achraf Hakimi, it would be Amrabat. He is essential for balance and a great runner. I read that he covered more than fourteen kilometres against Spain. I see him as the Gennaro Gattuso of Morocco."

As per FBref over the past 12 months, Amrabat has shone when compared to his positional peers, ranking in the top 1% and 2% for passes completed and attempted respectively. He also ranks extremely highly for passes into the final third and progressive passes, showing his quality on the ball.

Off the ball, Amrabat ranks in the 85th percentile for tackles in midfield, so could compliment the likes of Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in a potential midfield three, and by the looks of things, a move may well materialise before the 11pm deadline.

Spurs: Postecoglou Eyeing Move For "Superb" £22m Richarlison Upgrade

Saturday evening confirmed several things for Tottenham Hotspur.

One, Harry Kane's £100m transfer to Bayern Munich is not the world-ending scenario some have feared.

And two, manager Ange Postecoglou's freshly implemented system tantalises an exciting, refreshing new chapter for the club.

Dispatching Manchester United 2-0 after opening the seasonal account with a battling 2-2 draw against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium has hinted that goals and points will flow this term, but there remains space, unequivocally, for a new forward.

Richarlison has led the line for the opening two matches, whilst young striker Alejo Veliz, aged 19, has penned a £13m deal from Argentinian outfit Rosario Central.

What's the latest on Ernest Nuamah to Tottenham?

According to Football Insider, Spurs are preparing a formal offer for Danish side FC Nordsjaelland's teenage forward Ernest Ernest Nuamah, with the Daily Mail claiming he is rated at £22m.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

Premier League rivals Burnley, Brighton & Hove Albion and West Ham United are also interested, so Postecoglou and co will have to act swiftly and incisively to secure his services this month.

How good is Ernest Nuamah?

The dynamic Ghana sensation, who can play across both wings and centrally, has started the 2023/24 campaign with aplomb, scoring four goals and providing one assist from four matches in the Danish Superliga.

Still only 19 years of age, this follows an impressive breakthrough season where Nuameh plundered 15 goals and four assists from 34 matches for Nordsjaelland across all competitions.

Profiling the youngster, his former manager Flemming Pedersen said:

“Ernest is first and foremost a dribbler. He is incredibly fast, has a huge acceleration, and a good agility. He is primarily left-footed, but can also use the right. He is a great individualist with tremendous power, who has great potential to also become a skilled team player.”

While he is not naturally a forward, preferring to utilise his blistering speed and force as a forward-surging vehicle out wide, Nuamah, who has also been dubbed the "Ghanaian Flash" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, boasts an average Sofascore rating of 7.53 in the league this term, having complemented his prolific return with two shots per game and a crisp pass success rate of 83%.

ange-postecoglou-2

Given his ability to flourish both wide and as a centre-forward, Nuamah could prove to surpass Richarlison's presence with the Lilywhites, with the Brazilian forward only scoring three goals and supplying four assists from 37 outings since completing a £60m transfer from Everton in July 2022.

The 44-cap international only managed to record a score of 6.73 across 21 Premier League appearances last season, taking just one shot per game and completing 73% of his passes.

With Kane gone for pastures news, Richarlison might feel he has a new lease of life under Postecoglou's wing, and while he has indeed started the first two games this year in the talismanic role, an average rating of just 6.5, taking one shot each match, hardly evokes confidence following a disappointing introduction to life in north London.

Nuamah might be young and inexperienced, but he looks to be a true talent and if he can retain his cutting edge with a move to Postecoglou's project, Tottenham might unveil the perfect new attacking outlet to cement a starring role, surpassing Richarlison.

Liverpool: Reds "In Talks" With Piero Hincapie’s Agents

Liverpool have recently been linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, and a new update has revealed the saga is progressing quite quickly.

How old is Piero Hincapie?

The Ecuadorian is still only 21 years of age, but has already matured into a formidable centre-back for Leverkusen, having arrived there from Talleres in 2021. He has made 76 apperances for the Bundesliga side, as well as starting three matches for Ecuador at the 2022 World Cup.

Hincapie is arguably one of the most highly-rated young centre-backs in Europe at the moment, given the strides he has made at his current club, so it is no surprise that there is interest in his signature. He is contracted to Leverkusen until the summer of 2027, however, so it could take a hefty bid to prise him away any time soon, putting them in a strong bargaining position.

There is no question that Liverpool could do with a left-sided centre-back this summer, in order to boost their defensive options and bring in more competition for Andy Robertson, who is still taking time to adjust to a new role that sees him move centrally more often than before from left-back.

One rumour earlier in the week suggested that Hincapie is being looked at as a potential target and now a new claim has further backed it up.

piero-hincapie

Will Liverpool sign Piero Hincapie?

According to Teradeportes on Twitter X, Liverpool are already having discussions with Hincapie's representatives over a move to Anfield, although West Ham are also in the same position:

"As reported by@FT_schneidi, West Ham and Liverpool are interested and are in talks with Piero Hincapie's team, they also confirmed that Leipzig is still interested in the Ecuadorian and they are also talking, Leverkusen would be looking for a sale of around €45m (£38.5m)."

This is an exciting update for Liverpool supporters, considering Hincapie could be absolutely perfect to come in and bolster that left-sided area at the back this summer, especially with fellow target Goncalo Inacio signing a new deal at Sporting CP and therefore not heading to Merseyside.

The youngster has everything in his locker to be a success for the Reds, whether it be his quality on the ball, his defensive nous or his versatility, with left-back a position he can also thrive in, if needed.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

Last season, Hincapie made an average of 2.5 clearances and won two aerial duels per game in the Bundesliga, and he also enjoyed an 85.1% pass completion rate at the World Cup. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has lauded him as a "fantastic defender", also highlighting "80% of ground duels won" and "64% of aerial duels won" in the Europa League in 2022/23, which further shows what a big talent he is.

If Liverpool could get a deal over the line over the next couple of weeks, and bring in a new defensive midfielder as well, their summer work will be complete and Jurgen Klopp should feel that he has a squad that can fight across four different competitions, mounting a potential Premier League title challenge in the process.

West Ham In Advanced Talks Over £30m "Warrior"

West Ham United are in advanced talks over a deal for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, with the Irons likely to shell out a fee in the region of €35m (£30M), according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg.

What's the latest West Ham transfer news?

West Ham have now made it clear they would be interested in signing Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka, however the German has no desire to leave the Bundesliga champions this summer, so David Moyes may have to turn his attentions elsewhere.

According to Plettenberg, the Hammers have four other central midfield targets on their list, including Edson Alvarez, Sofyan Amrabat, Denis Zakaria and Gallagher, with a move for at least one of those players considered likely.

Speaking specifically about the Irons' pursuit of the Chelsea midfielder, the Sky Sports reporter said: "Talks are already well advanced with Gallagher. The fee would be between 25 and 35 million euros. At least one of the five candidates mentioned should come."

New Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is said to be an admirer of the Englishman, so it remains to be seen whether he is willing to sanction his departure this summer, and West Ham may face fierce competition for his signature from other Premier League clubs.

Tottenham Hotspur are keen on the 23-year-old, while Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion are also thought to have him on their wanted list.

Given that the Hammers are in advanced talks to sign the England international, however, it appears as though they could be one of the clubs best-placed to secure his signature.

How good is Conor Gallagher?

It would be fair to say the Cobham academy graduate did not make the impression he would have liked to across 35 Premier League appearances last season, registering a total of just three goals and one assist.

However, during his time with Crystal Palace, when the central midfielder received much more regular game time, he managed to record eight goals and three assists in all competitions.

Not only has the Epsom-born midfielder demonstrated he has a lot to give in an attacking sense, he is also more than happy to pitch in defensively, ranking in the 96th percentile for blocks per 90 in the past year, when compared to his positional peers.

Football Scout Jacek Kulig has lauded the Chelsea ace as a "warrior", while Jermaine Jenas has praised him for his attacking prowess, saying: “I think he is a game-changer aswell Conor Gallagher. He’s the type of player that you bring on and he has an impact on the game. He presses, gets himself in the box and creates chances."

The midfielder has proven himself in the Premier League, but he is unlikely to receive much game time as he would like at Chelsea, given the Blues' heavy spending last season, bringing in Enzo Fernandez for a fee of €121m (£104m).

As such, it makes sense for Gallagher to seek pastures new at this stage of his career, and he could be a solid addition to Moyes' squad.
