Hammers Reportedly End Interest In Midfield Target

West Ham United have ended their interest in James Ward-Prowse after Southampton rejected another bid, according to Alex Crook.

West Ham have been interested in the England international following the sale of Declan Rice.

Is James Ward-Prowse leaving Southampton this window?

The midfielder could leave St Mary's this summer.

The player has been the subject of plenty of interest from Premier League sides, with Fulham, Brentford, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, however the Hammers have been the side most interested in the 28-year-old. Southampton are resigned to the fact that their club captain is set to depart this summer, but are holding firm in their stance regarding his asking price of £40-50m.

The Hammers had an opening bid of £20m rejected by the Saints earlier in the window, with the report saying that the south coast side were "disgruntled" by the opening bid. Despite the poor opening bid, many expected that the deal would be completed, with Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth stating on the Transfer Talk Podcast:

"It looks likely he will go. West Ham have held talks with Southampton over the potential signing of James Ward-Prowse. West Ham will continue to push. No fee agreed as yet. Ward-Prowse, though, we understand he is keen to move to the London Stadium. So, I think West Ham are getting a bit of encouragement on that side of it. Personal terms, not expected to be a problem on this one."

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

However, according to Sky Sports, following the rejection of the Hammers second bid for the midfielder, the club have reportedly moved on from the English midfielder as they have no intention of meeting the Saints asking price.

Speaking on talkSPORT, journalist Crook confirmed that early this morning the Hammers have seen a bid rejected by the Championship side, and if they are "true to their word" they will not bid for the player again:

"They have come back with an answer and, as it has been expected as we said this morning, that Southampton would hold firm in their valuation, they are holding firm. I'm told the bid was £27m up front rising to £30m with add-ons. I'm told that Southampton have said not thanks so if West Ham are true to their word, their interest in James Ward-Prowse will be over, but lets see if that was just negotiation tactics or a genuine threat"

Who can West Ham go for instead?

The Hammers do have other options that they could go to after moving on from Ward-Prowse.

One option is Manchester United's Scott McTominay, who is being considered by the Hammers according to reports. The midfielder has struggled for starts under Erik ten Hag and is free to depart this summer should the Red Devils receive a "very big offer", with current Hammers boss David Moyes reportedly a big fan, and hoping to complete a double swoop for both the Scotland international as well as Red Devils defender Harry Maguire. The United youth product is an experienced and versatile option, having made over 200 career appearances across central midfield, centre forward and central defence.

Another option is Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez. The Mexican was reportedly close to joining German giants Borussia Dortmund earlier this window, however, that move collapsed due to the German side not wanting to pay the asking price that Ajax have set, which is reportedly between £35-40m. Alvarez is an unbelievable all-around option, with his passing numbers of 83.91 passes attempted and 88.7% passes completed putting him in the top five percent among players outside Europe's top five leagues in those categories, whilst his defensive numbers are consistently strong according to FBref.

Man Utd "Serious" Option To Land £51m-rated Sancho Upgrade

Manchester United are reportedly in the mix to sign Netherlands international, Xavi Simons this summer, with it looking as if manager Erik ten Hag could be set to utilise his Dutch connections once again in order to bring the youngster to Old Trafford.

What is the latest on Simons to Man United?

According to L'Equipe journalist Loic Tanzi, the Red Devils are believed to be a "serious" option to land the 20-year-old ahead of next season, with the one-time Barcelona ace potentially set to be up for grabs on a loan deal this summer.

Writing on Twitter, the transfer insider revealed: "And be careful, if Leipzig is well ahead. Manchester United – who already wanted the player at PSV – are also among the serious suitors."

The promising playmaker is set to re-join former club Paris Saint-Germain following an impressive season in the Eredivisie at PSV Eindhoven, with the Ligue 1 outfit ready to trigger their reported £5m buy-back clause in order to snap up the in-demand ace.

As per Tanzi, however, it would appear that a temporary exit away from the Parc des Princes is set to be the next step for the 5 foot 10 gem, with United in the race alongside Bundesliga side, RB Leipzig, at present.

How good is Xavi Simons?

The Amsterdam native is likely to have piqued the interest of Ten Hag following what was a stunning 2022/23 campaign in Eindhoven, with the five-cap sensation having proven himself to be a truly "fantastic talent" amid what was a "fantastic season", according to talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Having been restricted to just 11 appearances at first-team level during his prior stint at PSG – where his chance of game time was hampered by the likes of Neymar, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe – the £51m-rated ace more than took his chance last term, having contributed 22 goals and 12 assists in 48 games in all competitions.

With Ten Hag believed to be keen to acquire a forward who can play all across the front line, alongside the signing of a new number nine, the capture of Simons – who has been dubbed a "top talent" by Kulig – could then represent a perfect option for the former Ajax boss, due to his impressive versatility.

Man United's Jadon Sancho

That addition could also prove to be an upgrade on Jadon Sancho at the Theatre of Dreams, with the Englishman seemingly on "borrowed time" in Manchester, according to treble winner, Dwight Yorke.

The former Borussia Dortmund trickster has scored just 12 goals and contributed only six assists in 79 games in total for United over the past two seasons, with Ten Hag believed to be growing 'increasingly impatient' with the 23-year-old, as per Manchester Evening News.

The duo's contrasting form can be seen by the fact that while Sancho recorded just six goals and three assists in the Premier League last term, Simons' 2022/23 campaign proved far more fruitful as he registered 19 goals and eight assists in the Eredivisie.

The latter man's superior creative quality is also shown by the fact that he created 11 'big chances' in contrast to just six for Sancho last term, while his average match rating of 7.52, as per Sofascore, was also far more impressive than that of his United counterpart (6.85).

Not only that, but Simons also appears to be more adept at beating his man having averaged 2.2 successful dribbles per game, while the one-time Manchester City man averaged just 1.3 for that same metric last term, ensuring he could offer a far more dynamic and direct threat from the flanks.

As such, if Ten Hag is looking to improve on the struggling Sancho this summer, then the 53-year-old should certainly consider snapping up his dazzling fellow Dutchman.

Everton: Blues "Most Interested" In Victor Boniface

Everton are interested in signing Union SG striker Victor Boniface during the summer transfer window, according to a fresh update regarding his future.

Who is Victor Boniface?

The Nigerian is making a name for himself in Belgium currently, standing out as one of Union's most influential players and catching the eye with his relentless end product in recent times. He enjoyed a hugely productive 2022/23 season, not only scoring nine goals in the Belgian Pro League, but also netting six times in just nine appearances in the Europa League.

Boniface is yet to win a cap for Nigeria at international level, but he appears to be pushing all the time and has been hailed for being one of a number of Nigerian attackers who have been "on fire" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, including Napoli star Victor Osimhen and former Everton attacker Ademola Lookman, who is now at Serie A side Atalanta.

The Merseysiders have been linked with a summer move for the 22-year-old in recent days, as they look to solve an attacking issue on show throughout last season, in terms of a lack of goal threat. They scored only 34 goals in 38 Premier League matches and it played a massive role in them almost going down to the Championship, although they eventually stayed up on the final day.

Now, another update has emerged that further suggests Everton see Boniface as a primary attacking target.

Could Everton sign Victor Boniface?

According to La Covina de Nervion [via Sport Witness], Everton are the "most interested" suitor when it comes to the race to sign Boniface this summer. It is stated that Sevilla are no longer interested in making a move for the Union star, however, with the Belgian side demanding €15m (£13m) for his services.

Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverksuen are also mentioned as potential suitors in the update, so the Blues certainly won't have it all their own way, in terms of their pursuit for the striker during the current transfer window.

Everton's attack is so badly in need of an injection of youth and quality this summer, so Boniface has to be considered an exciting option to bring in, given his aforementioned scoring feats last season. At 22, he is still admittedly a raw player learning his trade, however, so signing a more experience alongside him could make the most sense.

It is hard for Sean Dyche to rely on Dominic Calvert-Lewin to consistently lead the line, such are his injury problems, while Neal Maupay has done nowhere near enough since arriving from Brighton last summer, scoring and assisting just once apiece in a total of 29 appearances, which is a scarcely believable return.

Whether Boniface is ready to be starting striker every week for a Premier League club is up for debate – he has only represented Bodo/Glimt and Union to date – but he is an exciting talent who has long-term potential in his boots, and Dyche could feel he could get the best out of him over time.

Williamson hits record ton, but Test in balance

With an unbeaten 148, the New Zealand captain pushed his team into the lead in a match he has to win to level the series

The Report by Alagappan Muthu27-Mar-2017
Live scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:47

Moonda: Williamson has established himself as a modern great

In another dimension, Kane Williamson would have the swagger befitting a man who became the fastest New Zealander to 5000 runs and their joint-highest century-maker all on the same day. In this one, he shies away from all praise. Perhaps, he suspects them to be in cahoots with those jilted awayswingers, always plotting against him just because they couldn’t entice his outside edge.South Africa tried for a good part of 73 overs to tempt him. There were bouncers that made the heart-rate flutter, reverse swing that melted the heart altogether, and sexy line and length as far as the eye could see. All of them, though, were brushed off by Williamson’s soft hands and straight bat. He was the boring husband-to-be at a raging bachelor party, and thanks to his discipline, New Zealand rose to a position of strength in the Hamilton Test. They went to stumps on 321 for 4, with a lead of seven runs. Provided rain stays away, the final two days of this decider promise a whole heck of a lot.Whatever the result, though, the fans at Seddon Park should toast to Williamson’s success. Playing his 110th innings, he conquered Mount 5000 with a pull shot for six. Then, off his 151st delivery, a friendly old full toss from part-timer Dean Elgar, he whipped a four through midwicket and celebrated hundred number 17. The late great Martin Crowe had held both those records for New Zealand all on his own. Now, they have been passed down to his heir apparent. An heir who is only 26 years old and is yet to hit the ages when a batsman is considered to be in his prime. At the other end was Jeet Raval, who made a career-best 88 off 254 balls, playing with nimble hands and steady feet. Over half his runs came behind the wicket as he enjoyed using the pace of the fast bowlers. Against spin, he dialled up midwicket, using his reach to get to the pitch of the ball and rolling his wrists over it. He deserved a century – not only would it have been his first, it would have been the first by a New Zealand opener against South Africa since 1953. But, towards the close, Raval became visibly bogged down, his concentration solely on being out there rather than scoring runs. He spent 25 balls on 83. He blocked full tosses. He could have got out to one. And, eventually, he was toppled by Morne Morkel with 14 overs to stumps. It was a gruesome end to a bloody-minded knock. Then, South Africa found a way back into the match, getting rid of Neil Broom and Henry Nicholls, picking them up and tossing them aside like they were unwanted toppings on a slice of pizza. They could have had Mitchell Santner too if Vernon Philander hadn’t overstepped off the delivery that flattened the off stump. And just like that – after hours and hours of it looking like New Zealand would sail ahead – the match was in the balance again. As expected on the third day of the Test, batting became slightly easier. The grass on the pitch had died out despite spending a lot of time under the covers. They got an additional one-and-a-half hours this morning to recuperate, but all for nought. So the bowlers had to rely on reverse swing. That was then torn out of their armoury by umpires Bruce Oxenford and Rod Tucker in the 59th over, prompted into checking the shape of the ball after Philander sent a throw on the bounce in an effort to rough up one side of the leather. Faf du Plessis was utterly unimpressed with the decision, and Philander, from that point on, underamed the ball in from the deep.Morkel took the 250th wicket of his career, exhibiting both his natural strengths and the experience he has gained over his 74 matches. He had seen Tom Latham quite content to leave everything outside off. So he went around the wicket to trick the left-hander into playing at something he shouldn’t. A ball that was coming in for three-fourths of the way, pitched, straightened and nabbed the edge through to the wicketkeeper. Quinton de Kock dived to his left to pick up an acrobatic one-handed catch to seal a passage of play from the top draw.Spin had started to have a say too, with left-armer Keshav Maharaj ripping it out of the footmarks. Williamson, wary of the threat, was quick to put him off his length, coming down the track several times, hitting a straight six in the process. Their captain’s aggression helped New Zealand not lose a single wicket to the turning ball. At the other end, Morkel created doubts in Raval’s mind over the position of his off stump from both over and around the wicket. Williamson, too, seemed to be hurried by deliveries that dipped and curled in at him, although remarkably, he was able to put a couple of them away for fours through square leg and midwicket.Yet, on a day when all of New Zealand’s top three made 50 or more for the first time at home, when they put on their third-highest partnership – 190 for the second wicket – ever against South Africa, their middle order put them back under pressure. Luckily for them, Williamson is so good at standing up to it.

BCCI, CSA pull players out of WBBL

Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana will be withdrawn from the WBBL before the competition has finished, in order to participate in a training camp ahead of their 2017 World Cup qualification tournament

Adam Collins13-Jan-20173:36

Lemon: Sixers only side to lock themselves at the top

The BCCI have exercised their right to withdraw the batsmen Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur from the Women’s Big Bash League before the competition has finished.ESPNcricinfo has learned the duo will return to India ahead of the WBBL finals to participate in a training camp before their 2017 World Cup qualification tournament, leaving Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder without their prized recruits if competing in the trophy decider. The development, alongside Cricket South Africa’s retrieval of Dane van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp from Sydney Sixers duty for the last four regular season fixtures, has bolstered calls for a dedicated ICC exclusivity schedule window for the WBBL.Anthony Everard, the head of the BBL, explained that the No Objection Certificate process – which includes provision for overseas boards to call back their national players for duty as they see fit – is respected widely, but acknowledged “degrees of frustration” experienced by the affected clubs at this late stage.Everard believes the WBBL, in its second season, has built a case for a window as the first women’s competition of its kind. “Given we’ve invested significantly in this competition, and the important role it plays in the development of women’s cricket not only within Australia but globally, we have at least got a seat at the table to have that discussion,” he said.It is a view shared by former England captain, and now Adelaide Striker, Charlotte Edwards. She said it was “frustrating” that her team-mate Sophie Devine missed two games to play for Wellington in New Zealand’s T20 event days after making the WBBL’s fastest century. “Hopefully [a window] is going to be something looked at in the future where the dates don’t clash and we can have as many of the New Zealand girls as possible in this tournament,” she said.A Sixers spokeswoman confirmed their South African pair had been signed before it it was clear they would be missing over a quarter of the regular season for five ODIs against Bangladesh. In turn, she added her club’s support for the window in future seasons. “I would be surprised,” she said, “if CA wasn’t advocating on our behalf so that it became a priority.”The Thunder are at this stage unlikely to incur the cost of replacing Kaur with another international, while the Heat are hopeful that West Indian Deandra Dottin will recover from facial surgery in time to fill Mandhana’s vacancy. The Sixers, who are two games clear at the top of the table, will substitute the South Africans with England wicketkeeper Amy Jones and Irish rookie Kim Garth for their last four group games. Kapp, spearheading their attack, is the most frugal bowler in WBBL02 to date.Perth Scorchers allrounder and New Zealand skipper Suzie Bates was the most prominent international representative drawn away from WBBL duty last season, missing six games where clashes existed across the Tasman in the Christmas-New Year period. While stressing the efforts made by New Zealand Cricket, Bates says it continues to be a “really difficult” process for all parties; both boards wanting players to be available full-time. “It is hard when it is the players that are left with those decisions,” she said, concurring with Edwards that it would be “helpful” having a window to avoid the predicament into the future.Bates also noted the difference between the depth in the men’s and women’s tournaments in finding suitable players. “No one wants to dilute their teams because we just don’t have the numbers,” she observed. “The top ten players in the world are in demand from everyone.”A competition insider echoed the concern for the fledgling tournament replacing marquee players as easily as it is the case for the men’s equivalent. “There just isn’t the depth,” he said, contrasting the BBL where “every player manager in the world” is contacting clubs when a vacancy arrives due to injury or international selection.Another affected player returned home to New Zealand was allrounder Amy Satterthwaite, captain of Canterbury in New Zealand, who agreed with the Hurricanes that she would miss two games, half of the amount she wasn’t available for in WBBL01. As was the case with Devine, Hobart lost the game the experienced allrounder was absent for, while the other was washed out.Everard is confident the Trans-Tasman piece of the puzzle is “solvable” between the boards between seasons. “Ideally you want to get to a point where it becomes a win/win,” he said. “I think there’s a workable solution in there somewhere.”

Gameplan is to attack spinners – Vijay

M Vijay acknowledged his failings against the short ball and said his gameplan was to back his core game after striking his eighth Test century on the third day of the Mumbai Test against England

Sidharth Monga in Mumbai10-Dec-2016M Vijay is difficult to slot into one genre of batting. He has T20 hundreds, but is one of the best defensive batsmen going around in Test cricket. He strikes at around 46 runs per 100 balls, but is already only one six short of getting into the top 10 six-hitting Test openers. Only one of the 10 ahead of him is a defensive batsman: Navjot Sidhu, who similarly attacked spinners.Just like the cricketer that he is, Vijay is an emotional person, but doesn’t open up with many. Having addressed a press conference after scoring his eighth Test century, one that put India in command in the Mumbai Test, Vijay was walking off when he called out a journalist he knows. He told the journalist to make an announcement on his behalf: that he wants to dedicate this innings to the father of a close friend back home who died on the first day of the Test. That he was sorry he couldn’t be there for his friend, only whose first name he gave: Srinath. This was a century that came after failings both similar and uncharacteristic. Vijay is known for scoring big at the start of a series and then fading away, but these failures were coming against the short ball from somebody who has tackled it with aplomb all over the world. Vijay is, in fact, one of the best – if not the best – leavers of the ball. Vijay acknowledged that failing.”I did think about it [short balls] because I was playing at the balls I should be leaving generally,” Vijay said. “There are lot of other factors to it. I don’t want to reveal them. But yeah, the definite gameplan is to back my core game, believe in it and come back fresh, and to play this Test match the way I wanted to play.”The eight-day break between the third and fourth Tests perhaps turned this into a bit of a start of something new. “The break helped me,” Vijay said. “And it helped everybody, I guess, to go and rethink and come back better.”One of the first successes for Vijay was hitting an overpitched Adil Rashid wrong’un for six, which resulted in Rashid being taken out of the attack at a time when spinners were troubling Vijay. “Actually, my gameplan is to attack the spinners because I don’t want them to settle in one particular area where they find it comfortable,” Vijay said. “I just wanted to use my feet and use the depth of the crease, and play according to my gameplan. It came out pretty well, I guess.”Asked to rate this innings vis-à-vis his others, Vijay said: “It is special because I started off well in this series,” Vijay said. “And then a couple of matches I couldn’t play the way I wanted to play. I was getting out too early. I just came out with a much clearer mindset in this game. And I just wanted to back my instinct and play.”The innings was special not least because it – with the help of a Virat Kohli masterclass – has given India a 51-run lead with three wickets in hand. Considering how much the ball has turned, that is a massive lead.”Definitely [in control of this match],” Vijay said, “because any lead is gold in this wicket. During tea time, we just thought get close to their target, but the way Virat and Jayant Yadav are batting, I think we are in a pretty good position.”

Burnley In For £4m-rated ‘Risk-Taker’ As Vitinho Upgrade

Burnley may have sauntered their way to promotion to the Premier League under the watch of impressive managerial rookie Vincent Kompany, but that is not to say some areas of the squad are not in need of addressing this summer.

According to LancsLive, one of the positions being looked at is right-back, with Leeds United's versatile Cody Drameh said to be of interest to the Clarets.

Who is Leeds United defender Cody Drameh?

Drameh has yet to make a name for himself at Leeds, being restricted to just four appearances across their three seasons back in the top flight, but he has impressed away from Elland Road.

Still aged just 21, Drameh did well during his half-season spell on loan with Cardiff City in 2021-22 and returned to the Championship in the second half of last season with Luton Town.

The former Fulham youth player was brought in during the January window and started 19 times for the Hatters as they earned a stunning promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.

While predominantly a right-back, Drameh was asked to fill in on the right-hand side of midfield for the majority of his time at Kenilworth Road and chipped in with a couple of assists.

One of those came against Bristol City in March when setting up Carlton Morris for the only goal of the game. Luton boss Rob Edwards praised Drameh at the time for the way he quickly adapted to life at another new club, while also issuing the youngster a new challenge to develop his game further.

"Cody’s been really good since he's come in, but we encouraged him to be really brave and we wanted him to take some risks," Edwards said, as per LeedsLive. "I thought he was really on the front foot and he showed a lot of quality."

Where would Cody Drameh fit in at Burnley?

On the face of it, Burnley are not exactly desperate for a new right-back. That is a position, after all, that Wales international Connor Roberts thrived in last season.

However, Roberts played in a team-high 43 of Burnley's games last season, and Kompany could do with having another adequate back-up option ready to fill in.

Vitinho took up that role last season, featuring seven times at right-back, while also being used down the wing and on the opposite flank. That versatile nature is a big positive, and is something Drameh showed last season he can also provide.

There was little between Vitinho and Drameh last season in terms of creativity, with respective goals and assists combined per 90 minutes returns of 0.17 and 0.13, while they completed an almost identical number of passes per game (32.7 and 33.2).

However, Drameh outperformed Vitinha in terms of metrics such as shot-creating actions (3.50 per 90 compared to 2.53), tackles won (2.38 and 1.20) and aerial duels (1.13 compared to 0.90), suggesting he'd be a more solid asset on the right-hand side of the defence.

Vitinho has won the hearts of supporters at Turf Moor, and he may have a part to play in the Premier League, but it is clear to see why Drameh – valued as little as £4m by Football Observatory and with plenty of years of top-flight football ahead of him – is on the radar of Clarets boss Kompany.

Liverpool Set To Announce New Contract For £58k/Wk Star

Liverpool are set to announce a contract extension for Adrian with the Spaniard already putting pen to paper on a new deal.

What's the latest contract news for Adrian?

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Adrian has already signed a new deal with Liverpool set to announce the deal.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Romano said: "He had some possibilities in Spain. Some Italian clubs were also asking about the situation.

"But the expectation is for Adrian to be ready to announce this new deal because everything is signed, from what I understand."

The former West Ham goalkeeper currently earns £58,000 per week, according to Spotrac, and with his current deal with the Reds set to expire at the end of June, Liverpool have renewed his terms.

It's unclear how long the extension is, but he will be at the club for the 2023/24 season at the very least.

Why are Liverpool extending Adrian's contract?

Adrian only played one game for Liverpool this season, playing the full 90 minutes during the 3-1 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield. Since the curtain raiser, the 36-year-old didn't play a single minute for Jurgen Klopp.

Some fans might be wondering why Liverpool would keep a player that barely contributes. One reason may be Caoimhin Kelleher's potential transfer away from Anfield this summer.

The Irishman is good enough to start for many Premier League teams with Redmen TV Paul Machin presenter urging him to leave the club in order to take his career to the next level.

Both Kelleher and Adrian are unfortunate to be playing second and third fiddle to Alisson Becker. The Brazilian finished the Premier League season with 14 clean sheets, missing out on the Golden Glove to Manchester United's David De Gea.

With Kelleher potentially on his way out, Liverpool will need to replace the Irishman. Letting Adrian leave as a free agent would create another transfer headache for the Reds solve.

The Reds are hard at work in the process of recruiting new midfielders with Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner all departing as free agents this summer. Arthur has also been released after his unsuccessful loan spell at Anfield.

Alexis Mac Allister could be the first player to join the club this summer with reports suggesting he has already agreed personal terms for a move to Liverpool. Now, negotiations will proceed with Brighton over a possible £70m transfer fee.
