Mohammad Saifuddin, the Bangladesh allrounder, has been ruled out of the second ODI against Sri Lanka, being played on Tuesday in Mirpur, after suffering concussion when he was hit on his helmet by a delivery from Dushmantha Chameera. Taskin Ahmed has since replaced Saifuddin as a like-for-like concussion substitute for the rest of the game, the first time a team has been forced to make use of the rule in a men’s ODI.An update from the BCB* during the second half of the match confirmed that Saifuddin had undergone a scan at a city hospital, and while the scan hadn’t revealed anything serious, he has been kept under observation. The incident took place in the 47th over of Bangladesh’s innings. The short ball from Chameera pinged Saifuddin on the helmet as he missed with an attempted hook. Saifuddin ended up running himself out that same ball as he and Mushfiqur Rahim, who led Bangladesh’s batting effort with a 127-ball 125, tried to steal a single, but Kusal Mendis caught Saifuddin short with a direct hit. Saifuddin walked off with the Bangladesh team physio by his side.Related

His replacement, Ahmed, did play the first match of the series, which Bangladesh won by 33 runs, but proved ineffective – he conceded 62 runs off nine wicketless overs, the economy rate of 6.88 the poorest among the six Bangladesh bowlers to be in action on the day.Ahmed – and Saifuddin – however, entered the record books as the first instance of a concussion sub in a men’s 50-over international game. It has happened once in a women’s ODI, when Shabika Gajnabi replaced Chinelle Henry for West Indies against India in North Sound on November 1, 2019.There have, however, been seven instances of concussion subs being used in men’s Tests: Marnus Labuschagne for Steven Smith against England in 2019, Jermaine Blackwood for Darren Bravo against India in 2019, Theunis de Bruyn for Dean Elgar against India in 2019, Mehidy Hasan for Liton Das and Taijul Islam for Nayeem Hasan for Bangladesh against India in 2019, and Brian Mudzinganyama for Kevin Kasuza against Sri Lanka and Timycen Maruma for Kevin Kasuza for Zimbabwe against Sri Lanka last year. The two instances in men’s T20Is were when Qalandar Khan stepped in for Saqlain Arshad for Qatar against Jersey in 2019, and the time Yuzvendra Chahal replaced Ravindra Jadeja against Australia in 2020.Saifuddin, meanwhile, played a useful hand in the win in the first ODI, first hitting two fours in a nine-ball 13* from No. 8 as Bangladesh scored 257 for 6, and then picking up the wickets of Dasun Shanaka and Wanindu Hasaranga on his way to returns of 2 for 49 as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 224.

Offer ready: Newcastle set to make £17m+ bid for midfielder alongside Guehi

Newcastle United’s transfer business after potentially signing defender Marc Guehi may still not be over.

The Magpies have been productive in this market but have had to do it in a patient way, as the club makes sure they abide by the financial fair play rules. Eddie Howe’s side will be looking to do as much business as they can between now and the end of the window, while also hoping to continue their good start to the Premier League campaign after beating Southampton last weekend.

He's like De Ligt: Newcastle target move for £26m Guehi alternative

Eddie Howe is desperate to bolster his defence during the current transfer window

Newcastle have made five additions to their squad so far in this transfer window, with those signings being a mix of youth and experience. They have added two new goalkeepers to their side, as well as signing Lewis Hall on a permanent basis and bringing in William Osula, who looks to be a promising player.

The Premier League side has turned their attention to signing a central defender now, and they have made Crystal Palace defender Guehi their top target for that position. Newcastle have been serious about their pursuit of the player, as the club has made four bids for the England international.

Their latest offer was said to be around the £65 million mark, but that evaluation is said to have fallen short of what Palace want for the player. However, it now appears as though the Magpies are edging closer to signing Guehi, with Sky Sports reporting that there is “cautious optimism” that a deal can be struck before the weekend.

Marc Guehi for England

Newcastle’s latest offer wasn’t said to have been rejected despite falling short of the club's valuation. Instead, talks have continued between the two clubs over the structure of the deal. Palace believes that it would be beneficial to sell Guehi, as he’s only got two years left on his contract. But as well as looking to sign Guehi, Newcastle could follow up on his signing by chasing a midfielder.

Newcastle are set to make a £17m bid for midfielder

According to journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos, Newcastle are set to make an offer for Olympiacos midfielder Santiago Hezze. The update states that the offer is said to be more than €20 million (£17 million) for the 22-year-old.

Hezze has been with the Greek side since August 2023, when he joined the club from Argentinian side Huracan. The midfielder played over 120 games for the Argentine side, scoring nine goals and chipping in with eight assists.

Hezze played 50 times for Olympiacos in his first season at the club, as he was a prominent figure for the club in all competitions. He played the majority of his minutes in the league, but he also played an important role in the club reaching the Europa League and then winning the Europa Conference League.

The versatile midfielder, who can feature in holding, central or attacking roles, has played in the club’s opening game of this season, meaning he has now played 51 times for the Greek side, during which time he has scored one goal and recorded three assists. Hezze is contracted to the club until the summer of 2028, meaning Newcastle will have to make a good enough offer for the club to consider selling him.

Finn Allen after his 29-ball 71: 'From the beginning, I felt I was in the zone'

Explosive NZ batsman offers a peek into the way his mind works after he helped beat Bangladesh in Auckland

Mohammad Isam01-Apr-2021In explaining how he got off the mark with a reverse sweep in two successive T20Is, Finn Allen provided a glimpse into his mindset. He used the word fearless up front. It can come across as a word that is overused but this 21-year old really does bat like that. For proof, check out his 29-ball 71 in a rain-reduced game that helped New Zealand to a 65-run win in Auckland. His ten fours and three sixes was a reflection of how he batted during this season’s Super Smash. Allen scored 512 runs at 193.93 strike-rate in 11 games. It is the third-highest strike-rate among batsmen with 500-plus runs in a T20 tournament. Big-hitting luminaries Andre Russell and Alex Hales are the other two, but neither were playing their first T20 tournament like Allen. When asked why he played a reverse sweep to get off the mark in the second T20I in Napier, especially after his golden duck on debut, Allen said that he backs himself to pull it off despite the risks involved.”It was just about being fearless, continuing to be like that from the Super Smash,” he said. “The fear of not getting out and wanting to take it to the opposition. I felt like it is a shot that I worked on a lot against left-arm spin this summer.”I thought that it is a shot I play a lot so why not pull it out [against Nasum Ahmed]? It doesn’t matter the situation. I could have easily thought I haven’t scored a run yet, just get one under the belt. But I felt like it was the best option for me. Talking to Guptill at the other end, he said back yourself and back your skills. I went for it.”Allen did the same at Eden Park on Thursday. After Martin Guptill hogged most of the strike in the first two overs, Allen reverse swept Ahmed over point for four. He cultivated the shot originally as a means to counter Mitchell Santner in the Super Smash but is now finding a lot more uses for it.”I just felt it was a good option,” Allen said. “The whole field was up and I knew roughly what he was trying to bowl. I felt like it was a good match-up for me. I was lucky that it came off. We just went from there.”I found out a lot of guys got out trying to hit Mitch Santner down the ground. I wanted to hit the reverse sweep but over the top, which is a potential boundary option for me. I think I spent two or three days batting left-handed against the spinners in the nets. Luckily it came off and just kept going from there.”Once he had struck that first four, he struck two more off the next couple of deliveries and added a straight six to take 19 off the Ahmed over. New Zealand were away with both Guptill and Allen going after literally every delivery.Allen’s best shot was perhaps the square-cut six over point off Rubel Hossain, that leapt high into the Eden Park stands.”From the beginning I felt I was in the zone. I was focused on my partner and the bowler. I didn’t hear anything else. (In the end), I had a moment to appreciate the guys who hung around in the rain to watch us. It was pretty cool,” he said. But the T20I series against Bangladesh weren’t all bed of roses for Allen. It taught him that in international cricket, you can’t always rely on plan A.”With all the games I play, I want to have the same brand. I want to approach it in the same aggressive way. But I think this series has made me realise I need to have more options. Get in similar positions and look to be dominant, but have more than one option for a particular delivery,” he said. Also helping Allen perform the way he liked was a dressing room full of people offering him their unstinting support. “I definitely didn’t think it would be so easy to integrate into an international side. I think it just shows how good the group is. The coaching staff made it easy for me to fit in and feel comfortable. It helped my confidence to go out there and play the way I did. It is a similar way Wellington brought me in here,” he said.

Mitchell Starc won't play in BBL final despite being fit for selection

Mitchell Starc will not play in the BBL final for the Sydney Sixers despite being available after he and the Sixers came to a mutual agreement that the club should stick with the squad that has secured them a home final.Starc has not played in the BBL since December 2014 but made a surprising decision to sign a contract with the Sixers ahead of the tournament, despite a heavy international schedule over the summer, with the possibility to play in the BBL finals. He played all four Tests against India and required scans on his hamstring in the aftermath of the fourth Test loss. He was subsequently cleared but after discussions with the Sixers it has been agreed that he won’t come into the side which qualified straight for the final with a convincing victory over Perth Scorchers.Related

“The guys have done so well this year and I think it’s in everyone’s best interests to stick with the guys that have worked so hard to get to this point,” Starc said in a statement. “I’ve always felt part of the club and I am right behind them for another big win on Saturday night.”Sixers general manager Jodie Hawkins said Starc and Nathan Lyon will be involved in an off-field capacity at the SCG on Saturday night and the club is comfortable with the decision to leave Starc out.”Mitch is, and always will be, a big part of the Sixers family,” Hawkins said. “Circumstances meant he and Nathan Lyon were not able to join us this season but they are both very much part of our set up and will represent the club off the field on Saturday night.”Our current squad have done an incredible job all season to qualify for the final while playing every game on the road and Mitch and the club are really comfortable with this decision.”Starc will now focus on preparations for the upcoming Test tour of South Africa although that has yet to be confirmed.

England women's player ratings vs Germany: Leah Williamson's poor form continues in an abysmal Lionesses defence as Georgia Stanway's heroics fail to paper over the cracks

The Arsenal star had struggled in the build-up to this fixture but Sarina Wiegman kept her in the line-up and it won't have helped her confidence

When Germany's third goal went in on Friday, England could've been forgiven for feeling like the final whistle at Wembley was near. The Lionesses had been run ragged by their visitors, who looked hungry and eager to prove something under new boss Christian Wuck. Yet, any who took a glance at the big screen will have seen that full-time was nowhere near – with just 29 minutes on the clock as Germany gave themselves an almighty advantage that, despite two first half goals from Georgia Stanway, England could not claw back in a 4-3 defeat.

It was the first time the Lionesses had conceded three before the break in 10 years, a stat that underlined easily the worst defensive performance of Sarina Wiegman's tenure. Just three minutes had been played when the first went in, after an error from Leah Williamson forced Millie Bright to bring down Linda Dallmann and Giulia Gwinn scored from the spot. Not long after, Gwinn had another, easing in down the right to expose a total lack of communication in the opposition. Klara Buhl got the third, rifling a shot through Lucy Bronze's legs.

There had been some glimpses on the attack from England, namely through Alessia Russo, who had a goal pulled back for offside and also hit the post, and Georgia Stanway was able to claw some of the deficit back through two strikes before half time. However, those heroics simply papered over the cracks and allowed the scoreline to flatter the hosts.

Germany deserved to win and win big, and they should've done the latter with the chances created. Buhl and Jule Brand both let the Lionesses off the hook when they spurned big opportunities after the break, while Hannah Hampton made good saves to deny both Dallmann and Felicitas Rauch. Sara Dabritz did give the visitors a well-earned fourth before the day was over, even if the penalty she converted was harshly awarded, and then Ann-Katrin Berger handed Bronze the chance to narrow the scoreline again.

This was the first of four friendlies that England will play to close out 2024, games in which Wiegman can experiment, take a look at new players and learn more about her team ahead of the 2025 European Championships. If there was one lesson to take away from this one though, it's that the Lionesses will not be retaining their continental crown if they defend like this next summer.

GOAL rates England's players from Wembley Stadium…

Getty Images SportGoalkeeper & Defence

Hannah Hampton (5/10):

Made a couple of good saves but also had some poor moments.

Lucy Bronze (4/10):

Caught out of position far too many times and didn't do enough to thwart Buhl when one-on-one with her for the third goal.

Millie Bright (4/10):

Easily beaten and unconvincing in several moments as part of a defence that looked discombobulated throughout.

Leah Williamson (3/10):

Played an awful pass that let Germany in for the first goal and was just generally out of sorts.

Jess Carter (4/10):

Had not played left-back for months and it showed. In that sense, it was not her fault entirely that she often just wasn't in the right spaces.

AdvertisementAFPMidfield

Keira Walsh (5/10):

Fine when she was on the ball but positioning off it was not connected enough with the defence.

Georgia Stanway (7/10):

Cool penalty started an England comeback and a fantastic finish continued it. One of few who emerged with credit.

Ella Toone (4/10):

Should've levelled the scores at 3-3 before the break but missed the target under little pressure. Couldn't get much more involved than that before going off at half time.

Getty Images SportAttack

Beth Mead (4/10):

Got in good space to pick up Stanway for her second goal. Was generally stifled otherwise.

Alessia Russo (6/10):

One of the few players to look good in the opening half an hour. Thumping finish was only ruled out for an offside on Stanway and then she hit the post. Worked hard and contributed well to build-up, picking out Mead for the second.

Lauren Hemp (5/10):

Plenty of endeavour but a lack of end product.

Subs & Manager

Jess Park (5/10):

Came on at half time but struggled to really impact the game.

Alex Greenwood (5/10):

Had half an hour to make her mark but was going to take more than her second half introduction to stop the holes appearing in the defence.

Chloe Kelly (N/A):

On for the final 15 minutes but couldn't do much.

Jessica Naz (N/A):

Got less than 10 minutes in the No.9 role.

Maya Le Tissier (N/A):

Replaced Bronze in the closing stages.

Sarina Wiegman (4/10):

Friendlies are about experimenting and trying different things and so it felt bizarre to see Wiegman stick with a tried and tested XI. Worst of all, despite all these players being regulars under her, they lacked understanding and communication. To play Williamson when she is clearly out of form was also a strange decision which was instantly costly.

Chelsea now want to take £163,000-per-week Bayern Munich star off Kompany

Chelsea want to sign a £163,000-per-week star from Bayern Munich this summer, which would be a significant loss for their new manager Vincent Kompany.

Chelsea could sign another defender after Tosin Adarabioyo

The Bavarians and Chelsea could actually do some business together in this next transfer window, with both sides preparing for new eras under different head coaches before the start of next season.

£72 million player really wants to quit Chelsea with Maresca talks imminent

He has his eyes on the Stamford Bridge exit door.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 7, 2024

Chelsea announced Enzo Maresca as their new manager to replace Mauricio Pochettino earlier this week, with the Italian putting pen to paper on a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge, which includes the option of a further year.

The west Londoners want to sign multiple defenders for Maresca, as shared by Fabrizio Romano recently, who also said that Chelsea could be set for a busy summer transfer window.

"It will continue to be a busy summer at Chelsea," said Romano on Chelsea's transfer plans after bringing in Maresca.

"It won’t be completely crazy but they will try to make smart things happen, including a new goalkeeper and I expect them to try for at least one new centre-back, but it could be two. I also expect Chelsea to be busy with the striker position, and I mentioned many times Benjamin Sesko, who is highly rated at Chelsea but also by others like Arsenal and Manchester United."

Chelsea have already sealed a deal for Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer from Fulham, so that is one centre-back on the books and ready to replace the departed Thiago Silva, who re-joined Fluminese on a Bosman deal after leaving west London.

Romano's statement indicates that another centre-back may well arrive after Tosin, and one candidate to come in is Bayern Munich's Dayot Upamecano. The France international, on a rumoured wage of around £163,000 per week, made 33 appearances under Thomas Tuchel last season, and it is unlikely Kompany will let him go easily.

However, Bayern are rumoured to be targeting Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen, so perhaps negotiations involving the Dutchman could help to sweeten any proposed deal.

Chelsea want to take Upamecano away from Bayern Munich

Such is his glowing reputation, Upamecano would be quite the statement capture by Chelsea, and he has plenty of experience on the biggest stages. The 25-year-old has 19 caps for Les Bleus at international level, and reliable Bundesliga journalist Christian Falk has claimed Chelsea would like to sign Upamecano from Bayern this summer.

"Yes, it's true: Chelsea would like Dayot Upamecano," said Falk on the FC Bayern Insider podcast.

"It's not really clear yet whether he'll have a chance next year. Vincent Kompany is looking at everyone, but would Bayern let him go? That would probably cost a lot of money. At the time, Bayern paid €42.5m to RB Leipzig."

France legend Marcel Desailly has previously tipped Upamecano to become one of the best centre-backs in his country, which surely suggests Chelsea would have a quality player on their hands.

Gareth Delany, Aaron Lilley secure Leicestershire the spoils in basement battle

Leicestershire 177 for 6 (Delany 68, Lilley 50) beat Durham 147 for 8 by 30 runsLeicestershire chalked up their first win in this year’s Vitality Blast, half-centuries from Gareth Delany and Arron Lilley helping them on their way to a comfortable 30-run victory over a Durham side which has now lost all three matches played. With this year’s Vitality Blast being a ten-game competition – Leicestershire’s first two games, against Derbyshire and Lancashire, were rained off, while Durham lost to Lancashire and Nottinghamshire – there was already something of a ‘must-win’ feel about the match.Batting first after winning the toss, Leicestershire quickly lost Harry Dearden, caught at cover after skying an attempted drive at Paul Coughlin, but Ireland international Delany, regularly clearing his front leg and targeting the off-side, hit the ball cleanly from the start. He was fortunate not to be stumped when he advanced down the wicket to left-arm spinner Liam Trevaskis, wicket-keeper Stuart Poynter failing to gather the ball cleanly, but otherwise gave no chances in going to his half-century off 35 balls, including six fours and two sixes. He had made 68, from 45 deliveries, before Trevaskis finally got his man, top-edging a straightforward catch to Scott Steel short fine leg in the 13th over. The momentum was maintained by Lilley, and in some style. The Lancastrian also had a moment of fortune, on 17, when Rimmington at mid-off was unable to hold a hard-hit drive off the bowling off Brydon Carse, but hit two sixes and five fours in going to his 50 off 33 balls as the Foxes posted a challenging 177 for 6.Needing nine runs an over, Durham struggled from the start. Leicestershire’s seamers judged the wicket well, taking the pace off the ball, and the spinners, led by left-armer Callum Parkinson, maintained the pressure. The key wicket was that of Alex Lees, and while the big left-hander could consider himself unlucky when having made 36 he pulled a delivery from Will Davis straight into the hands of George Rhodes at deep square leg, the pressure was already beginning to tell.Parkinson, Leicestershire’s top wicket-taker in last season’s T20 Blast, picked up three wickets, the last a brilliant caught and bowled to dismiss Carse, and having impressed with the bat, Delany also demonstrated his all-round abilities with some useful leg-spin.

Man City's 115 charges explained: What Premier League champions face as they prepare for 'trial of the century' over alleged FFP breaches

Manchester City will face a hearing over their 115 charges for alleged breaches of Premier League rules. But what exactly are they accused of doing?

It has been rumbling on for more than 18 months but the end is finally in sight. Manchester City's hearing with the Premier League into the club's 115 charges for allegedly breaching financial rules begins on Monday.

The charges, which were announced on February 6 2023, have threatened to overshadow City's incredible achievements on the pitch before and since details of the investigation were revealed.

Pep Guardiola's side won the Premier League title that May and then completed the treble by winning the FA Cup and the Champions League. And the following season they made English football history by becoming the first team ever to win four consecutive league titles.

But with each success there have been questions from the media and rival fans about the charges, and when the outcome of the investigation will be announced. That day is getting closer and closer, and the first step towards it will be taken on Monday, when what many are dubbing 'the sports trial of the century' finally begins.

GOAL explains the key details as City prepare to do battle with the Premier League…

Five charges related to their failure to comply with UEFA's rules including Financial Fair Play (FFP) from 2013-14 to 2017-18. A further seven charges are for breaching the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability (PSR) rules, from 2015-16 until 2017-18.

The final 35 charges are for failing to co-operate with Premier League investigations from December 2018 until Feb 2023.

When the charges were first announced in February 2023, the club put out a statement saying: "Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with.

"The Club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent Commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position. As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all."
