Warning signs for Australia ahead of litmus test against spin in Galle

The batters have stumbled in the ODIs and things are unlikely to get any easier

Andrew McGlashan23-Jun-2022Knowing what’s coming is one thing, playing it is something else entirely. There were some smiles from David Warner as he watched deliveries rip past his edge during the 99 he made in Colombo on Tuesday, but Australia’s collapse that decided the ODI series has brought into sharp focus what they will need to combat for the rest of the tour.Warner talked a good game afterwards, despite the series defeat, extoling the positives of Australia being challenged by Sri Lanka’s phalanx of spinners, who bowled 43 overs in the fourth match, ahead of the two Tests in Galle which start next week.”We were always expecting turning wickets so it’s fantastic preparation for us,” he said. “We actually love the fact that they’re playing on the wickets back-to-back… that’s what we want, we can’t get that practice in the nets – the nets are green.Related

“For us it’s great practice out in the middle with these dustbowls. It’s going to be exciting for the Test matches in Galle because we know what we’re going to get there. This is extreme spin; you don’t usually see these type of wickets.”You only see them here. India is completely different…they’re actually good wickets [in India]. And they turn later on day three or four [of Tests].”Warner was part of the Australia side that lost the Tests 3-0 during the 2016 tour of Sri Lanka. He made 163 runs at 27.16 in a series where only Steven Smith (average 41.16) and Shaun Marsh (average 76.50 from one Test) passed the 30-mark as the line-up was feasted on by Rangana Herath, who claimed 28 wickets at 12.75.There is one ODI remaining, but thoughts are turning to the two Tests which begin next Wednesday. Before the tour, Marnus Labuschange said he had watched how Joe Root found success in Sri Lanka last year when he plundered 426 runs in the two-match series. Usman Khawaja, who has transformed his play against spin after struggling earlier in his career, shapes as a vital player after his prolific returns in Pakistan but it will likely be a steep learning curve for the likes of Cameron Green, Alex Carey and even Labuschagne.Mitchell Marsh, another player who was on the 2016 tour and equaled Warner’s tally of runs across the three matches, believes Australia’s recent T20 World Cup success and the Test series win in Pakistan is evidence of how the batters have improved against spin.Australia’s 1-0 Test series victory in Pakistan earlier this year was a perfect of example of overcoming conditions that required the game to be taken deep on flat wickets•AFP/Getty Images”It’s probably a little bit hard to say that now considering we’re 3-1 down in this series, but I think if you look across the board all our players, especially in the white-ball team, we’ve all gained a lot of experience over the last couple of years and have improved dramatically playing spin,” Marsh said. “It came out in the World Cup, the way we all played, and the Test team has some really good players of spin. Looking forward, the Test series is going to be a great one. We are obviously going to get bunsen burners, so it will be great to watch.”The 1-0 Test series victory in Pakistan earlier this year was a perfect of example of overcoming conditions that required the game to be taken deep on flat wickets. Australia kept using the term that it was a 15-day Test and they won it on the last one. Reverse swing became as much of a deciding factor as spin. However, Galle is likely to be different if recent history is anything to go by. The game could well move much faster.Sri Lanka’s current crop of spinners don’t match Herath and they were poor on the recent tour of Bangladesh: Lasith Embuldeniya, Ramesh Mendis, Praveen Jayawickrama and Dhananjaya de Silva had combined figures of 3 for 536 as the pace bowlers, Kasun Rajitha and Asitha Fernando, secured victory. However, if Australia want a glimpse of what could greet them, the last time Sri Lanka played in Galle is likely a better guide. In two matches against West Indies late last year, Embuldeniya, Mendis and Jayawickrama shared 38 wickets. The quick bowlers sent down just 27 overs across both matches. There is a thought, however, that under new head coach Chris Silverwood that pace may not be quite so forgotten. It will be interesting whether any of the spinners who have troubled Australia in the ODIs are called up. Of the frontliners, only Wanindu Hasaranga has played Tests and he averages 100.75 from four matches. Along with Jeffrey Vandersay and Maheesh Theekshana they are viewed as white-ball specialists. Embuldeniya, with 71 wickets in 16 Tests, has shown glimpses of performing the Herath role, but does not have the same consistency. It is not out of the question that 19-year-old Dunith Wellalage gets a swift promotion.Regardless of selection, whoever lines up for Sri Lanka, Australia know the challenge that will likely come their way. That does not mean it will be any easier. Galle may prove the litmus test of how far their playing of spin has come since 2016.

New Zealand's Beckham shows how to mend it

While the rest of the New Zealand top order struggled against the Bangladesh attack, it seemed like he was batting on a different surface

Sreshth Shah in Potchefstroom06-Feb-2020Ten New Zealand players came out to bat in the semi-final against Bangladesh. Nine of them combined to score 122 runs in 218 deliveries at a strike rate of 55.96. The tenth, Beckham Wheeler-Greenall, scored 75 at a strike rate of 90.36.It seemed like Wheeler-Greenall was batting on a different surface than the rest of his team-mates. While the rest of the New Zealand top order struggled to find the gaps against Bangladesh’s varied and effective bowling attack, Wheeler-Greenall continued to drag New Zealand out of the quicksand they were apparently sinking in.When he walked in to bat after 25.4 overs, New Zealand were at 75 for 4, struggling to even score at three runs per over. It seemed he had a plan, to take the team through the 50 overs. At some point, the runs would come, and they did in the final ten when the team scored at a run rate of more than seven. The way he paced his innings, is what makes him one to watch out for in the future. He took his time at the start. Facing two quality spinners from both ends, he scored only two runs in his first 11 deliveries. He let himself settle in. But as soon as he took strike in the 29th over, he smashed the left-arm spinner, Rakibul Hasan, for consecutive boundaries.Nicholas Lidstone and Wheeler-Greenall added 65 for the fifth wicket, but when the former fell, the New Zealand innings still had 56 balls remaining. When the wicketkeeper Quinn Sunde fell for 1, leaving Wheeler-Greenall with only the tailenders to play with, they had 50 balls left. In those 50 balls, New Zealand made 69.Trusting his skills, he ramped the Bangladesh quick Tanzim Hasan Sakib for a six over fine leg in the 43rd over to begin his charge. He then thumped two fours off left-arm spinner Hasan Murad in the 44th to reach his second fifty of the tournament. It looked like New Zealand’s push for a 200-plus total had begun, but another couple of wickets left them with the very real prospect of being all out without lasting the 50 overs. So Wheeler-Greenall reined himself in once more, knocking the ball around till the end of the 49th over. With six balls left and two wickets still in hand, he unleashed his strokes, clattering 10 runs off the first two legal deliveries of the final over to take New Zealand past 200. A couple of scampered byes in the last three balls of the innings helped New Zealand finish on 211 for 8.This, however, wasn’t the first time Wheeler-Greenall has held New Zealand’s batting together. In the must-win game against Sri Lanka earlier in the tournament, it was his 111-ball 80 that had taken New Zealand close to the rather stiff target of 243. He had very nearly taken the team home too, but a search for a quick single had him run-out in the 49th over. That day, his team-mate Kristian Clarke’s two-ball six had saved New Zealand the blushes as they won in the final over, and on Thursday, he hoped to do the same. While his efforts could not take his team through to the final, it at least ensured the much-awaited semi-final wasn’t a damp squib and that his team could leave the field with their heads held high despite their six-wicket defeat. Before he became a serious cricketer in consideration for a spot in the New Zealand Under-19 side, Wheeler-Greenall used to play football regularly in the winter months as three members of his family have played club football for Otago United. It’s not surprising that he gets his first name from former England football captain David Beckham. One of Beckham’s most famous goals is from the halfway line against Wimbledon. Wheeler-Greenall’s most memorable moment from the football pitch, too, is a half-line goal he scored for his Dunedin-based high school during the quarter-final of the country’s youth championships. For New Zealand, Wheeler-Greenall wears jersey No. 23. Beckham had the same digits at Real Madrid and LA Galaxy. After this tournament, Wheeler-Greenall will go back to schools cricket, and a first-class debut is still relatively far away in the pipeline for the 17-year-old. But one thing has been proven. If Beckham could bend it, Wheeler-Greenall has shown he can mend it.

Twins Continue Trade Deadline Fire Sale, Send Utilityman to Cubs

The Cubs are adding utilityman Willi Castro to their roster after trading prospects to the Twins in return for Castro. NY Post Sports' Jon Heyman was the first to report the news on Thursday.

This is definitely not the move Cubs fans expected from the organization before the trade deadline buzzer rings at 6 p.m. ET. The Cubs are still in need of a strong starting pitcher.

The Twins have been extremely busy on Thursday as they've been trading away most of their veteran players of value to other teams. Castro is the latest on that long list. The biggest trade the Twins have conducted so far was sending Carlos Correa to the Astros a bit earlier on Thursday. The Twins will look like a totally new team once the deadline has officially passed.

Castro has already played six positions so far this season for the Twins, so he will likely be used as a fill-in anywhere on the field whenever a Cubs star is out of the lineup. The Cubs are World Series hopefuls this year, so they can use all the extra assistance they can get if it means playing deep into October.

Castro has played in 86 games so far this season, averaging .245/.335./407 with 74 hits, 48 runs, 27 RBIs and 10 home runs.

Luka Modric claims failed move to Chelsea from Tottenham a blessing in disguise with veteran midfielder seizing 'better opportunity' at Real Madrid instead

Luka Modric has revealed that Tottenham’s refusal to sell him to Chelsea more than a decade ago ultimately shaped the most successful chapter of his career. He suggested that what once felt like a crushing setback became the twist of fate that carried him to Real Madrid and earned him footballing immortality. Tottenham rejected multiple bids, leaving the midfielder to complete another season in north London before earning a switch to the Spanish giants a year later.

Modric reflects on his failed Chelsea transfer

Signed from Dinamo Zagreb in 2008 for £16.5 million, Modric went on to play more than 150 matches for Spurs. But as Chelsea intensified their pursuit in 2011, the Croatian admitted he made a misstep by voicing his desire to leave.

Speaking on Croatian programme , he said: "Perhaps I shouldn't have said so publicly that I wanted to leave."

"Even so, I did very well at Tottenham. They were very tough on me, and the chairman, Daniel Levy, made it crystal clear in our first meeting [that] there was absolutely no chance they would let me go."

Despite the tension, Modric, as a true professional, continued to perform on the pitch.

"After that, I carried on as if nothing had happened," he said. "I knew it would be complicated; both clubs are in London, and there's a rivalry. I wanted to go, even though I knew it was going to be very difficult."

AdvertisementGetty Images SportA season of redemption before Madrid came calling

Denied the move he coveted at the time, Modric instead produced one of his finest campaigns in a Spurs shirt, helping the team finish fourth in the Premier League. Ironically, that season ended with Chelsea winning the Champions League. Nonetheless, Modric now views that turbulent summer with gratitude rather than regret.

"In the end, it didn't happen, and I kept playing, and it was perhaps one of my best seasons," he reminisced. "We finished fourth; that year, Chelsea won the Champions League. The season was phenomenal, and a year later, an even better opportunity came along. And in the end, it worked out even better; probably if I had joined Chelsea, I wouldn't have gone to Real Madrid."

Leaving Real Madrid: A decision heavy with emotion

Modric spent 13 seasons in Madrid, lifting a record 28 trophies, including six Champions League titles, and winning the 2018 Ballon d’Or.  Despite the silverware and accolades, he admitted that walking away from Madrid last summer was among the hardest decisions of his life.

He explained to : "Honestly, it wasn't easy, because I spent 13 years, almost half of my life, practically in a club, in a city. It was one of the best times of my life. I arrived in Madrid perhaps relatively late, at 27, but at the right time. I was ready for that step. The four years in England helped me a lot. And everything I experienced and achieved in Madrid afterwards seems unreal to me.

"It is something incredible! Because you know what kind of club Madrid is, you know that they don't tolerate mediocrity, and to stay at that level, in a club like that, for so many years, with all the successes I've experienced there, it's something incredible. In my previous way of thinking, I believed that I would be satisfied if I ended my career at 35. But my professional curriculum has long since exceeded that limit, and I do not hide my gratitude: I am still, thank God, at that level and it is something incredible!"

Modric reiterated that he had always hoped to retire in Madrid, adding: "I've always said it and it wasn't platitudes, flattering the fans or the club – my big wish was to retire in Madrid. But simply, everything has a beginning and an end."

AFPA new chapter at Milan at 40

Instead of hanging up his boots at the Bernabeu, Modric opted for a fresh challenge in Italy last summer. Any doubts about his ability to adapt at 40 have been emphatically dismissed. The Croatian has slotted seamlessly into Massimiliano Allegri’s system at AC Milan and has already contributed one goal and two assists. Modric has emerged as a key figure in a Milan side that harbours ambitions of reclaiming the Serie A title. He is expected to feature again on Monday night when Milan travel to face Torino.

Not just Botman & Burn: Howe must drop Newcastle flop who lost 75% duels

Newcastle United head into the final international break of 2025 two points above the relegation zone in the Premier League after their 3-1 defeat to Brentford on Sunday.

The Magpies took the lead in the match, thanks to a brilliant goal from winger Harvey Barnes, but they were unable to press on and secure all three points.

Brentford went on to score three times after that opener from the English forward, and Eddie Howe will surely be disappointed with the defending that was on display from his players, notably Sven Botman and Dan Burn.

Why Newcastle should drop Sven Botman and Dan Burn

When Newcastle face Manchester City on the other side of the international break, the English head coach should drop both of those players from the starting line-up, although Burn has done the job for him by being sent off.

The makeshift left-back was given a second yellow card for giving away the penalty for Brentford’s second goal, as his lack of pace saw him caught out from a ball over the top, and a swing of the boot at the forward gave the referee little choice.

Burn was not the only underperformer in the defence, though, as Botman was also caught out, albeit via a deflection from Malick Thiaw, for the third goal of the game.

The Dutch centre-back, per Sofascore, lost four of his five aerial duels and did not win a single tackle during his time on the pitch, which was over 100 minutes with added time, which shows that Brentford’s players found it too easy to play against him.

Burn and Botman are not the only players who could lose their place in the starting line-up for the clash with City, as Sandro Tonali also struggled in midfield.

Why Newcastle should drop Sandro Tonali

The Italy international has been in fantastic form for the Magpies in the Premier League this season. He has been an engine in the middle of the park for Howe and has put in some brilliant displays.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Tonali has won 53% of his duels in the Premier League so far this season, per Sofascore, and created 1.3 chances per game for his teammates, but he was a shadow of his usual self in his performance against Brentford.

The former AC Milan midfielder earned a 4/10 player rating from Newcastle World for his display in the middle of the park against the Bees, and he was substituted for Joe Willock in the 77th minute, as part of a quadruple change by the manager.

Tonali was not at his best in the middle of the park and was too easy for the Brentford players to play against, as was the case with Botman, as he lost 75% (3/4) of his duels in the game.

As you can see in the table above, the Italy international was nowhere near his usual standards in midfield for the Magpies, as he failed to make much of an impact in or out of possession.

These statistics show that he did not offer enough quality on the ball as a creative force with his passing, whilst the midfielder was also beaten too easily in physical duels.

Therefore, Howe could ruthlessly drop the 4/10 flop from the starting line-up when they face Manchester City after the international break, with Burn missing out through suspension and Botman also potentially dropped for his dismal performance.

What Joao Pedro plans to do for Moises Caicedo after Chelsea assist at Tottenham

Joao Pedro has promised to do one thing for Chelsea team-mate Moises Caicedo after he helped end his nine-game goal drought in Saturday’s 1-0 victory at Tottenham.

Summer recruit Pedro started life at Stamford Bridge with two goals in his first three Premier League games, but had failed to find the net since August before his 34th-minute winner in north London.

Pedro, who was thwarted on three other occasions by Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, was indebted to Caicedo after he won back possession from Micky van de Ven and teed up the Chelsea forward to fire home.

Caicedo was later described as two of the best defensive midfielders in the world by boss Enzo Maresca along with Manchester City’s Rodri.

Pedro's plans for Caicedo after Chelsea winner

Brazil attacker Pedro echoed that sentiment and reflected on the importance of his goal in a period where he has struggled to train due to unspecified fitness problems and plans to take Caicedo out for dinner following his assist.

Chelsea’s fifth straight win at Tottenham helped them bounce back from a shock 2-1 home defeat to Sunderland on October 25.

It helped rebuild momentum for Maresca’s talented but youthful squad ahead of a midweek trip to Qarabag in the Champions League and Saturday’s visit of bottom-of-the-table Wolves.

Pedro added: “I think it was a big game, a derby and we know they are a good team.

“We knew we had to do 100 per cent to win this kind of game and we did. We won the game and now we need to look forward.”

Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank has major issues to solve in attack after they registered an XG (expected goals) figure of 0.05 – the lowest the club has recorded since records started in the 2012-13 season.

Maresca must drop Chelsea star who had fewer touches than Sanchez vs Spurs

What will not help Frank’s cause is the likely absence of Lucas Bergvall for Tuesday’s visit of Copenhagen after he was forced off with suspected concussion early on during the loss to Chelsea.

“That was a concussion, so he totally couldn’t stay on and I think the medical team did a good job in that aspect,” Frank reflected.

“And even if he wanted to stay on, it’s the right decision.

“Of course, we would have loved to have him continue. That’s why we picked him in the starting XI.

“Unfortunately, that couldn’t happen. So others will step in. Xavi (Simons) knew the game plan.”

Serial winner who worked with Ange now "favourite" for Rangers job

The search for Rangers’ next manager is heating up and, as such, a new name has reportedly emerged as the “favourite” to take the vacant role at Ibrox.

Rangers manager update

Some may still be in shock at Rangers that it’s not set to be Steven Gerrard in the dugout when domestic football returns. The Liverpool legend looked destined to return to Ibrox, before dealing the 49ers their latest blow. Forced back to the drawing board after their top candidate cited bad timing for rejecting the job, the new owners have quite the task on their hands.

Given that the Gers already sit as many as nine points behind Celtic and 11 behind unexpected leaders Hearts in the Scottish Premiership, to say that they can’t afford to get things wrong with their next appointment would be an understatement.

So far, similar names to the summer as well as some new faces have emerged as candidates. Danny Rohl, for example, has reportedly been discussed once again, whilst the likes of Graham Potter and Raphael Wicky have been mentioned for the first time.

It’s a case of choosing experience or youthful exuberance for those at Ibrox. Rohl would be an exciting choice, but not the safest option in current circumstances amid his inexperience. Potter, meanwhile, has the experience but would also be coming in off the back of failing at both West Ham United and Chelsea.

Other options include Hearts boss Derek McInnes. For Rangers, if they can’t match the league leaders, then hiring their manager may be their next best option. Former Ibrox star Kris Boyd believes the ship has sailed on that front, however.

It may also be none of those aforementioned options, with fresh reports now indicating that another name has emerged as the “favourite” to take the Rangers job.

Kevin Muscat now "favourite" for Rangers job

As reported by talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Kevin Muscat is now emerging as the “favourite” for the Rangers job, overtaking Rohl in the process. The 52-year-old is currently in charge of Shanghai Port, but may yet be on his way to Scotland.

Whether the Gers wait until the Chinese Super League season concludes on November 22 or target the manager right away is the big question. After such a poor start to the campaign, the Gers could certainly do with an immediate boost, but the ball may be in Muscat’s court on that front.

It’s also not the first time that Muscat has been linked with a move to Rangers. In previous years, the likes of Philippe Clement have beaten him to the job, but this time could finally be different.

Having won the Australian league twice and the Australian cup with Melbourne Victory, the Japanese league and Japanese Super Cup with Yokohama Marinos, and the Chinese league and cup with Shanghai Port, Muscat has won everywhere he has been. Now, Rangers could be next.

Ibrox should love him: Rangers hold talks to hire "insanely talented boss"

Rangers have held talks with a manager who could get Ibrox rocking once again.

The favourite for the job has also worked as Ange Postecoglou’s assistant with Australia in the past and may yet hand the Gers similar success that his compatriot gave the Bhoys.

Premier League punishment for Liverpool?! Reds set for showdown talks after breaking rules late on in loss to Man Utd

Liverpool will be reminded of the Premier League's multi-ball rules after multiple breaches of the system during their late loss to Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday. The rules on how balls are given to players after going out of play changed in 2022, with ball boys and girls no longer allowed to throw them to players, as they are instead positioned on cones, with stars expected to pick them up themselves.

  • Liverpool to be reminded over rules

Per the , the Premier League are set to speak with Liverpool to remind them of the nature of the multi-ball rules in fixtures played under their banner. In 2022, rules were changed, meaning that players are now expected to pick the ball up themselves, instead of waiting for ball boys or girls to throw it to them. However, after Harry Maguire scored a late goal for United at Anfield to give Ruben Amorim's side a 2-1 lead, which they would not surrender, the ball attendants repeatedly threw them to players in a bid to restart play quickly.

The rule also precludes staff from picking up the ball and throwing it to a player, something that Reds manager Arne Slot was guilty of as time ticked down. Liverpool have now lost four games in a row, sparking what could be fairly termed as a crisis on Merseyside.

    Precedent exists for punishment

A precedent was established in August after Aston Villa were found guilty of breaking the regulations, and were fined £125,000. They accepted that last season they had ignored the rules on no fewer five occasions. As well as ball staff throwing the ball to players, they were also alleged to have thrown another ball onto the pitch while the opposition goalkeeper was in possession of the match ball on the pitch. The report makes it clear that Liverpool do not expect a fine after one example of failing to abide by the rules, but they do expect to be reminded of their responsibilities towards them. United, for their part, did not actually make a complaint, although the Red Devils were said to be surprised that it went unchecked during the game. As a result of the ban, Villa were also suspended from using the multi-ball system in three games.

  • Liverpool's dismal form

The Reds have endured a dismal run under Arne Slot's management and have now gone four games in all competitions without a win. Not just that, they have been beaten by Crystal Palace, Chelsea, and United in the league, and by Galatasaray in the Champions League. The Reds have not endured such a run since 2014 under Brendan Rodgers, and have not lost five games in a row since September of 1953.

Slot bemoaned his side's bad luck after the final whistle, while taking a jab at United, telling reporters: "It's always difficult to play against a team that defends in a low block, that mainly plays a long ball but it makes it even more difficult if you go 1-0 down after one minute after a player of ours is on the floor.

"I think if you would have told me before the game, against a low block and against a team that plays so many long balls, that we would have created as many chances as we did – I would not have expected us to lose this game.

"I think people forget how many chances we had when we were 1-0 down in the first half because when you're 1-0 down it's quite normal that people focus on the ball you play wrong or a moment where you could have played forward and you don't."

    What comes next for Liverpool?

Liverpool's next fixture comes against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League as the Reds attempt to wrestle back some control over their fate. Slot will be desperate to avoid a fifth successive defeat. The Reds won their opening European encounter, beating Atletico Madrid 3-2 at Anfield, before their defeat to Galatasaray. After their continental trip, they face Brentford away from home this weekend.
