Not just Botman & Burn: Howe must drop Newcastle flop who lost 75% duels

Newcastle United head into the final international break of 2025 two points above the relegation zone in the Premier League after their 3-1 defeat to Brentford on Sunday.

The Magpies took the lead in the match, thanks to a brilliant goal from winger Harvey Barnes, but they were unable to press on and secure all three points.

Brentford went on to score three times after that opener from the English forward, and Eddie Howe will surely be disappointed with the defending that was on display from his players, notably Sven Botman and Dan Burn.

Why Newcastle should drop Sven Botman and Dan Burn

When Newcastle face Manchester City on the other side of the international break, the English head coach should drop both of those players from the starting line-up, although Burn has done the job for him by being sent off.

The makeshift left-back was given a second yellow card for giving away the penalty for Brentford’s second goal, as his lack of pace saw him caught out from a ball over the top, and a swing of the boot at the forward gave the referee little choice.

Burn was not the only underperformer in the defence, though, as Botman was also caught out, albeit via a deflection from Malick Thiaw, for the third goal of the game.

The Dutch centre-back, per Sofascore, lost four of his five aerial duels and did not win a single tackle during his time on the pitch, which was over 100 minutes with added time, which shows that Brentford’s players found it too easy to play against him.

Burn and Botman are not the only players who could lose their place in the starting line-up for the clash with City, as Sandro Tonali also struggled in midfield.

Why Newcastle should drop Sandro Tonali

The Italy international has been in fantastic form for the Magpies in the Premier League this season. He has been an engine in the middle of the park for Howe and has put in some brilliant displays.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Tonali has won 53% of his duels in the Premier League so far this season, per Sofascore, and created 1.3 chances per game for his teammates, but he was a shadow of his usual self in his performance against Brentford.

The former AC Milan midfielder earned a 4/10 player rating from Newcastle World for his display in the middle of the park against the Bees, and he was substituted for Joe Willock in the 77th minute, as part of a quadruple change by the manager.

Tonali was not at his best in the middle of the park and was too easy for the Brentford players to play against, as was the case with Botman, as he lost 75% (3/4) of his duels in the game.

As you can see in the table above, the Italy international was nowhere near his usual standards in midfield for the Magpies, as he failed to make much of an impact in or out of possession.

These statistics show that he did not offer enough quality on the ball as a creative force with his passing, whilst the midfielder was also beaten too easily in physical duels.

Therefore, Howe could ruthlessly drop the 4/10 flop from the starting line-up when they face Manchester City after the international break, with Burn missing out through suspension and Botman also potentially dropped for his dismal performance.

What Joao Pedro plans to do for Moises Caicedo after Chelsea assist at Tottenham

Joao Pedro has promised to do one thing for Chelsea team-mate Moises Caicedo after he helped end his nine-game goal drought in Saturday’s 1-0 victory at Tottenham.

Summer recruit Pedro started life at Stamford Bridge with two goals in his first three Premier League games, but had failed to find the net since August before his 34th-minute winner in north London.

Pedro, who was thwarted on three other occasions by Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, was indebted to Caicedo after he won back possession from Micky van de Ven and teed up the Chelsea forward to fire home.

Caicedo was later described as two of the best defensive midfielders in the world by boss Enzo Maresca along with Manchester City’s Rodri.

Pedro's plans for Caicedo after Chelsea winner

Brazil attacker Pedro echoed that sentiment and reflected on the importance of his goal in a period where he has struggled to train due to unspecified fitness problems and plans to take Caicedo out for dinner following his assist.

Chelsea’s fifth straight win at Tottenham helped them bounce back from a shock 2-1 home defeat to Sunderland on October 25.

It helped rebuild momentum for Maresca’s talented but youthful squad ahead of a midweek trip to Qarabag in the Champions League and Saturday’s visit of bottom-of-the-table Wolves.

Pedro added: “I think it was a big game, a derby and we know they are a good team.

“We knew we had to do 100 per cent to win this kind of game and we did. We won the game and now we need to look forward.”

Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank has major issues to solve in attack after they registered an XG (expected goals) figure of 0.05 – the lowest the club has recorded since records started in the 2012-13 season.

Maresca must drop Chelsea star who had fewer touches than Sanchez vs Spurs

What will not help Frank’s cause is the likely absence of Lucas Bergvall for Tuesday’s visit of Copenhagen after he was forced off with suspected concussion early on during the loss to Chelsea.

“That was a concussion, so he totally couldn’t stay on and I think the medical team did a good job in that aspect,” Frank reflected.

“And even if he wanted to stay on, it’s the right decision.

“Of course, we would have loved to have him continue. That’s why we picked him in the starting XI.

“Unfortunately, that couldn’t happen. So others will step in. Xavi (Simons) knew the game plan.”

Serial winner who worked with Ange now "favourite" for Rangers job

The search for Rangers’ next manager is heating up and, as such, a new name has reportedly emerged as the “favourite” to take the vacant role at Ibrox.

Rangers manager update

Some may still be in shock at Rangers that it’s not set to be Steven Gerrard in the dugout when domestic football returns. The Liverpool legend looked destined to return to Ibrox, before dealing the 49ers their latest blow. Forced back to the drawing board after their top candidate cited bad timing for rejecting the job, the new owners have quite the task on their hands.

Given that the Gers already sit as many as nine points behind Celtic and 11 behind unexpected leaders Hearts in the Scottish Premiership, to say that they can’t afford to get things wrong with their next appointment would be an understatement.

So far, similar names to the summer as well as some new faces have emerged as candidates. Danny Rohl, for example, has reportedly been discussed once again, whilst the likes of Graham Potter and Raphael Wicky have been mentioned for the first time.

It’s a case of choosing experience or youthful exuberance for those at Ibrox. Rohl would be an exciting choice, but not the safest option in current circumstances amid his inexperience. Potter, meanwhile, has the experience but would also be coming in off the back of failing at both West Ham United and Chelsea.

Other options include Hearts boss Derek McInnes. For Rangers, if they can’t match the league leaders, then hiring their manager may be their next best option. Former Ibrox star Kris Boyd believes the ship has sailed on that front, however.

It may also be none of those aforementioned options, with fresh reports now indicating that another name has emerged as the “favourite” to take the Rangers job.

Kevin Muscat now "favourite" for Rangers job

As reported by talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Kevin Muscat is now emerging as the “favourite” for the Rangers job, overtaking Rohl in the process. The 52-year-old is currently in charge of Shanghai Port, but may yet be on his way to Scotland.

Whether the Gers wait until the Chinese Super League season concludes on November 22 or target the manager right away is the big question. After such a poor start to the campaign, the Gers could certainly do with an immediate boost, but the ball may be in Muscat’s court on that front.

It’s also not the first time that Muscat has been linked with a move to Rangers. In previous years, the likes of Philippe Clement have beaten him to the job, but this time could finally be different.

Having won the Australian league twice and the Australian cup with Melbourne Victory, the Japanese league and Japanese Super Cup with Yokohama Marinos, and the Chinese league and cup with Shanghai Port, Muscat has won everywhere he has been. Now, Rangers could be next.

The favourite for the job has also worked as Ange Postecoglou’s assistant with Australia in the past and may yet hand the Gers similar success that his compatriot gave the Bhoys.

Premier League punishment for Liverpool?! Reds set for showdown talks after breaking rules late on in loss to Man Utd

Liverpool will be reminded of the Premier League's multi-ball rules after multiple breaches of the system during their late loss to Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday. The rules on how balls are given to players after going out of play changed in 2022, with ball boys and girls no longer allowed to throw them to players, as they are instead positioned on cones, with stars expected to pick them up themselves.

  • Liverpool to be reminded over rules

Per the , the Premier League are set to speak with Liverpool to remind them of the nature of the multi-ball rules in fixtures played under their banner. In 2022, rules were changed, meaning that players are now expected to pick the ball up themselves, instead of waiting for ball boys or girls to throw it to them. However, after Harry Maguire scored a late goal for United at Anfield to give Ruben Amorim's side a 2-1 lead, which they would not surrender, the ball attendants repeatedly threw them to players in a bid to restart play quickly.

The rule also precludes staff from picking up the ball and throwing it to a player, something that Reds manager Arne Slot was guilty of as time ticked down. Liverpool have now lost four games in a row, sparking what could be fairly termed as a crisis on Merseyside.

    Precedent exists for punishment

A precedent was established in August after Aston Villa were found guilty of breaking the regulations, and were fined £125,000. They accepted that last season they had ignored the rules on no fewer five occasions. As well as ball staff throwing the ball to players, they were also alleged to have thrown another ball onto the pitch while the opposition goalkeeper was in possession of the match ball on the pitch. The report makes it clear that Liverpool do not expect a fine after one example of failing to abide by the rules, but they do expect to be reminded of their responsibilities towards them. United, for their part, did not actually make a complaint, although the Red Devils were said to be surprised that it went unchecked during the game. As a result of the ban, Villa were also suspended from using the multi-ball system in three games.

  • Liverpool's dismal form

The Reds have endured a dismal run under Arne Slot's management and have now gone four games in all competitions without a win. Not just that, they have been beaten by Crystal Palace, Chelsea, and United in the league, and by Galatasaray in the Champions League. The Reds have not endured such a run since 2014 under Brendan Rodgers, and have not lost five games in a row since September of 1953.

Slot bemoaned his side's bad luck after the final whistle, while taking a jab at United, telling reporters: "It's always difficult to play against a team that defends in a low block, that mainly plays a long ball but it makes it even more difficult if you go 1-0 down after one minute after a player of ours is on the floor.

"I think if you would have told me before the game, against a low block and against a team that plays so many long balls, that we would have created as many chances as we did – I would not have expected us to lose this game.

"I think people forget how many chances we had when we were 1-0 down in the first half because when you're 1-0 down it's quite normal that people focus on the ball you play wrong or a moment where you could have played forward and you don't."

    What comes next for Liverpool?

Liverpool's next fixture comes against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League as the Reds attempt to wrestle back some control over their fate. Slot will be desperate to avoid a fifth successive defeat. The Reds won their opening European encounter, beating Atletico Madrid 3-2 at Anfield, before their defeat to Galatasaray. After their continental trip, they face Brentford away from home this weekend.

Everton are brewing a homegrown Barry in "prolific" 19-year-old star

Under past tenures, Everton weren’t exactly known as the most easy-on-the-eye watch.

Indeed, under Sean Dyche, the football was often a struggle to be entertained by, with just 21 goals finding the back of the net under the unpopular 54-year-old’s reign.

Now, however, with the likes of Jack Grealish leading the way under David Moyes, the Premier League side are a far more captivating sight to behold, with several striker options also available to the Scotsman that should see the goals continue to flow.

Moyes' striker conundrum in 2025/26

There was a drastic change in attack during the off-season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin didn’t pen a new deal at the club after an injury-ravaged few years on Merseyside, culminating in the long-serving Toffees servant swapping the blue half of Liverpool for Leeds United on a free transfer.

To fill this huge void, Moyes and Co would swoop in for rising Villarreal star Thierno Barry, with the Frenchman costing a weighty £27.6m to get through the door.

While he is yet to get off the mark for his new Premier League side from his first three league clashes, the hope will be that the “menacing” forward, as he was labelled by U23 scout Antonio Mango, can grow into becoming a lethal finisher on English shores with time.

Indeed, he tallied up a standout 61 goals previously playing in Belgium, France, Spain and Switzerland.

After all, Beto would regularly spurn chances towards the start of his up-and-down spell. Now, however, he’s the main man Moyes relies on up top, with two goals already next to his name this season.

Still, it could be deemed a risk to just rely solely on these two attackers to deliver the goods, with a homegrown Barry already up Everton’s sleeve. He’s now potentially ready for senior opportunities to boost their options.

Everton's "prolific" homegrown Barry

The high-flying Toffees do have a distinguished reputation for unearthing top gems through their academy in attack, with Moyes the manager who first handed Wayne Rooney a senior shot on Merseyside way back in 2002.

He also had a part to play in Ross Barkley’s rise up the ranks to senior stardom, with Omari Benjamin hopeful he can be the next in line for some first-team chances up top, having lit up the youth pitches at Everton for some time now.

Initially scoring goals by the bucket load at Arsenal in the U18 fold – with 18 strikes next to his name from 33 clashes – the 19-year-old Welshman has since made the switch to Everton and been equally as lethal.

Barry would very much be seen in the same clinical light when firing home ten goals in total for the Sochaux B team, with Benjamin even going as far as to be labelled a “prolific” threat by Arsenal youth reporter Jeorge Bird, before settling into life on Merseyside swimmingly.

As can be seen glancing at the table above, the 19-year-old has slotted into many different roles for the U21s and excelled, with the centre-forward spot his obvious preference overall, as seen in him bagging seven of his ten efforts to date from this position.

However, he can also line up down the left or right wing if needed, much like Barry, who has a sterling record of 14 career goals down either of these flanks.

Moyes might boldly want to insert Benjamin into his first team plans shortly; therefore, with this versatility, a standout attribute of his varied game, away from his red-hot goalscoring ability.

Yet, it could also be seen as a huge gamble to throw another raw and inexperienced striker into the mix, with Barry already very much a work in progress.

The former Villarreal number 15 will just need to shake off that first goal burden sooner rather than later, with Benjamin perhaps offering competition down the line as the revamped Everton attack aims to entertain supporters all season long.

Arsenal "want to move very quickly" to sign "special" £55m Tottenham target

Arsenal now “want to move very quickly” to sign a “special” Tottenham Hotspur target, and talks with his camp are currently ongoing, journalist Sebastien Vidal has revealed.

Gunners step up pursuit of new attacker after Lookman blow

Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman handed in a transfer request earlier in the window, which could’ve paved the way for a move to the Emirates Stadium, but the Gunners have recently been dealt a blow in their pursuit of the London-born forward.

Consequently, Mikel Arteta’s side will have to move on to alternative options, and they remain interested in signing Real Madrid star Rodrygo, with transfer expert Graeme Bailey revealing they are “waiting for a signal” from the Brazilian forward.

Rodrygo in action for Real Madrid.

Tottenham are also in the race for the 24-year-old, with it recently being revealed that Thomas Frank has also approved a move for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, which could be a concern for Arsenal, who are also well-known to be interested.

In fact, the Gunners have now agreed a £55m fee with Crystal Palace, with the deal edging closer to completion, although there are still a few issues to sort out, such as the structure of the installments.

As such, the door could still be open for Spurs to make a late move, which is why Arteta’s side “want to move very quickly” to sign Eze, according to a recent update from Vidal on X.

Tottenham now discuss signing "genius" £25m attacker who's keen on PL move

Spurs have now held talks over the signing of an attacking midfielder.

ByDominic Lund Aug 11, 2025

The journalist states that Arsenal representatives were sent to the Community Shield final against Liverpool, in order to “maintain contact” with the 27-year-old’s camp and “avoid any setbacks”.

Tottenham have also identified the Palace star as a “priority” target, but a deal may not be possible for either of the north London clubs until Crystal Palace secure a replacement.

"Special" Eze would surely favour move to Arsenal

While Spurs ultimately secured Champions League qualification via their Europa League triumph, they finished 17th in the Premier League last season, which is likely to be in the back of the attacking midfielder’s mind.

Arsenal, on the other hand, have been knocking on the door for the past three seasons, and having finally signed a top striker in the form of Viktor Gyokeres, this could be the year they end their long wait to win the Premier League title.

As such, the England international would surely favour a move to the Emirates Stadium this summer, and barring any late hitches, it looks like the Gunners will get a deal done, which is exciting news, off the back of a very impressive 2024-25 campaign.

Lauded as “special” by members of the media, Eze is clearly now entering the prime of his career, and he could be a difference-maker for Arsenal in their pursuit of the Premier League title.
