Solskjaer has to convince Cavani to stay

Manchester United could be without one of their key attacking players ahead of the 2021/22 season with reports circling that Edinson Cavani could depart Old Trafford.

As quoted by Argentine outlet TyC Sports, the Uruguayan is “not comfortable” in England and could soon leave for Boca Juniors, according to the player’s father.

Having been an excellent option for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following his free transfer arrival from Paris Saint Germain, the potential departure of Cavani could be a bitter blow for the Red Devils.

Since arriving in England, the now 34-year-old has had quite the impact. In 25 appearances in all competitions at Old Trafford, he has scored seven goals. It’s in the Premier League where the majority of those have come, though.

Some of those strikes have been supremely valuable, too. He has scored winning goals against Southampton, Everton and Fulham, with another effort against the Toffees at Old Trafford helping to earn a point.

In total, his goals have seen the Red Devils claim a further seven points in the Premier League. Without him, Solskjaer’s men could be sitting on 48 points, a huge 17 points behind table-toppers Manchester City. Their place in the top four could also have been in real jeopardy.

Cavani’s goalscoring instincts have also eased the burden on last season’s joint-top scorer Marcus Rashford. Throughout the 2019/20 campaign, the young Englishman scored 25% of United’s total goals in all competitions. This season, he has only contributed to 21%.

Another damaging aspect of the £210k p/w forward potentially departing is the need for a replacement. Valued at just £10.8m, one would suspect that it would cost much more than that to bring in a striker of Cavani’s quality.

The Red Devils could look to the free agent market as they did with the Uruguayan – Moussa Marega, Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay all being possible options – but that would, of course, be another gamble when Solskjaer knows he can already go all in on Cavani.

With it being reported that there is an option of a second year in his contract, the Red Devils need to activate that right now as opposed to letting him leave for free. If the veteran does leave, the United boss should be gutted to lose a very good player so soon after his arrival.

West Ham: Randolph praised after Everton cameo %%sep%% %%sitename%%

After being called into the starting line up against Everton just minutes before kick-off, after usual number one choice Lukasz Fabianski had suffered an injury in the warm-up, stand-in shot-stopper Darren Randolph has opened up over his first Premier League appearance of the season (West Ham United).

Randolph, who put in a solid display as West Ham snatched a 1-0 victory at Goodison Park, with Tomas Soucek clinching a late winner for the Irons, was inserted at the very last second as David Moyes called upon the barely-seen ace when Fabianski was injured warming up.

Despite his lack of match action, Randolph looked assured with little sign of rustiness – explaining to the club’s official website that he was ready to answer when he was surprisingly called upon.

Brought in as a reinforcement last season from Middlesbrough, re-signing for the Hammers in a £4 million deal, many supporters have hailed the ‘very smart signing’ after his showing against Everton.

Flocking to his message, here’s what Irons had to say.

West Ham fans praise Randolph

“Darren Randolph is a more than abled understudy to Fabianski- would be number one choice at majority of other teams in the league. Seems to be the model professional – never complains about game time and when called upon very rarely lets West Ham down. Solid clean sheet yesterday.”

Exclusive: Rob Lee slams Arsenal’s Willian

Speaking exclusively to FootballFanCast, former Premier League ace Rob Lee has slammed Arsenal star Willian.

The £220k-a-week earning star joined on a free transfer from London rivals Chelsea in the summer transfer window, and enjoyed a superb debut for Mikel Arteta’s side by assisting two goals in a opening day 3-0 win over Fulham.

Since then however, things have gone downhill for the Brazil international, with the 32-year-old still yet to score for the club and only adding one more assist to his total.

That has seen the winger drop out of the starting line-up in recent weeks, with the likes of Bukayo Saka and Nicolas Pepe firmly ahead of him in the pecking order on that right-hand side.

And when asked about how Willian has done this season for Arsenal, Lee delivered a scathing verdict on the Gunners’ summer signing.

He said: “Awful. For someone of his ability, you can see why Chelsea didn’t want to give him a long contract. Could have been Frank’s (Lampard) decision or could have been someone else’s decision, but you can see why they weren’t going to give him a longer contract.

“Willian has got so much talent and so much ability, but again, I don’t know, he just seems he’s not bothered. If he plays great, then great. But if he doesn’t, then not really bothered.”

The idea that Willian hasn’t been particularly bothered at Arsenal this season echoes the kind of problems the Gunners have had with Mesut Ozil, who also has that similar languid style – in fact, The Athletic recently claimed that “some feel that, not unlike Ozil, Willian is not helped by his relaxed body language”.

With the Gunners’ young guns like Saka and Emile Smith Rowe showing the way in recent weeks, Willian’s performances have just been scrutinised even more. And given he still has more than a couple of years left on his contract, it feels like a bad signing already.

Meanwhile, Arsenal could sign another Kieran Tierney in this starlet…

Steven Gerrard must bench Glasgow Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos for the foreseeable future

Glasgow Rangers resume their quest to claim the Scottish Premiership title when they travel to the Global Energy Stadium to take on Ross County on Sunday.

Rangers fought back twice to beat Standard Liege to reach the Europa League last 32 for the second season in a row after Scott Arfield scored the winner at Ibrox as the host came from behind to secure the victory.

However, Steven Gerrard must omit Alfredo Morelos from his squad for the foreseeable future.

Morelos’ slump in form is stark – the 24-year-old has gone three games without a goal or an assist –  and has only found the back of the net three times in the Premiership so far this season.

There’s no doubt that the Colombia international is the club’s star striker and probably one of the best centre-forwards in Europe on his day, having broken Ally McCoist’s European record earlier this year, but this doesn’t hide from the fact that he once again finds himself in the middle of a goal drought.

In fact, it’s fair to say that this is nothing new, as Morelos has endured many a barren run during his time at Ibrox.

But the stats show just how far his form has tailed off since he was first recalled to the first team after being benched for the game against Lech Poznan in the Europa League.

He got himself into some good positions against Standard Liege on Thursday night, he just failed to find the back of the net.

As per SofaScore, his ratings have steadily started to decline since the 3-3 draw with Benfica, where he took two shots on target, had two shots blocked, and made two key passes.

Against Liege, Morelos only mustered one shot on target, whilst he failed to record a single key pass.

Whether the Colombian has had his head turned by transfer rumours linking him with a move away from Ibrox, who knows, but Gerrard simply cannot afford to let him get away with these lacklustre performances any longer.

McCoist himself criticised the centre-forward for his “disappointing” display, whilst he was criticised for looking “unfit” and “unwilling to work” by former Scotland striker James McFadden in the summer. He’s clearly not up to scratch after returning from international duty, at any rate, with just one goal in his last five games.

A short spell on the sidelines could do the trick, that’s for sure, as Gerrard has plenty of options to choose from in the striking department.

Exclusive: Chris Kirkland questions Emiliano Martinez’s performances for Aston Villa

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has questioned Emiliano Martinez’s performances this season for Aston Villa.

The Argentine arrived at Villa Park from fellow Premier League side Arsenal for a reported fee of £20m, and quickly established himself as an integral part of Dean Smith’s starting XI.

The 28-year-old has played in every single league game since joining, and proved to be a revelation as he got off to a brilliant start with three clean sheets in his first four matches.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

However, he did see Southampton put three past him at the weekend, with James Ward-Prowse netting a couple of stunning free-kicks in the opening 45 minutes. And speaking to FFC’s James Beavis, Kirkland admitted that the goalkeeper will be “disappointed” with his display against Saints, as well as some other hairy moments in previous outings for the Villans.

He said: “I was at Sheffield Wednesday with Emi (Martinez) and he did that sometimes in training, he backed himself because he’s agile and he’s athletic. He’s almost like ‘I want you to put it there and I’ll save this because I know I’m athletic, I’m agile and I’m quick enough to get over there.’ But yeah I’ve seen it a couple of times this season where he’s got away with things with players hitting things over the bar and you’re thinking ‘you’ve given too much there’.

“Because with these players with the balls, all it’s going to do is get up and over that wall and the ball does more than the player sometimes with the pace on the ball. So yeah, I think he’ll be a little bit disappointed with that. I think he conceded a couple of them at Sheffield Wednesday as well, where he was too far over to one side. Now you’ve got to be not in the middle, but you’ve got to be just off middle.”

While things may have not gone plan for the Argentine last weekend, Kirkland believes that the former Gunners man made the right move during the summer transfer window.

“I think Villa is a good club for him to go to.

“At this time as well with no fans, that’s probably going to help him a little bit settling in quicker.”

It will certainly be an emotional encounter next for Martinez, as he comes up against his former employers at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday evening.

Liverpool could be forced to sell Mohamed Salah as Jadon Sancho saga takes a turn

Liverpool have taken an unexpected lead in the race for Jadon Sancho as the Dortmund winger reportedly favours a move to Anfield over anywhere else.

According to The Independent (via Sportsmole), the England international would rather join the Premier League champions than heavily-linked Manchester United. This news comes in spite of the months of talks connecting Sancho and the Red Devils, who have been eager to get a deal over the line. However, due to the 20-year-old’s hefty asking price of £117 million, United failed to gather the funds in time this transfer window.

Clubs must now wait patiently until at least January if they want to negotiate with Dortmund over their star player. But for Liverpool, it’s not as easy as just slamming the cash on the table.

What signing Sancho could mean for Liverpool

The Reds boast a very diverse squad. Some players have been brought in to make an instant impact like Virgil van Dijk, whilst others have been nurtured like Trent Alexander-Arnold. Signing Sancho would be another tick in the box for homegrown talent on Merseyside. However, it’s likely Jurgen Klopp would need to offload someone in order to make room for the rising star.

A battle for a place on the team-sheet between Sancho and Mohamed Salah may not make for a happy dressing room. The Egyptian has smashed numerous records during his time at Liverpool and has helped the club win their sixth Champions League and first ever Premier League title, whilst also being described as a “complete player” by Arsene Wenger. Sancho however, is eight years Salah’s junior and could pave the way for a whole new era at Anfield.

Ex-Liverpool man Jason McAteer recently wrote in his Racing Post column that he believes the England international will be great competition for Salah and fellow winger Sadio Mane. But a harsh reality may mean that there’s no way all three can be at the club, as you would have one world class player who is likely to be unhappy with a lack of minutes. Should the Reds revisit their talks with Sancho next year and if he wants the move, Klopp and co have a huge decision to make first.

Ademais, em juízo de cognição sumária, não se verifica qualquer indício de irregularidade na mencionada convocação.

GSB success: West Ham rejecting Chelsea’s Declan Rice approach laudable

West Ham United’s ownership of David Gold and David Sullivan deserve respect for their laudable decision not to sell Declan Rice to Chelsea this summer.

What’s the word?

According to Football.London, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard had identified Rice as a top target to solve his defensive midfield conundrum on the back of 29-year-old N’Golo Kante enduring an injury-troubled season last term.

The Blues could have looked to young charger Ethan Ampadu to replace the Frenchman but opted to send him out on loan to Sheffield United for the season, and instead attempted to court Rice away from the London Stadium and back to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are not believed to have lodged a formal bid to sign the 21-year-old England international, having been made aware that West Ham would not entertain the idea of negotiating a lower price for the Irons’ star man with supporters already up in arms over the club’s transfer activity.

Lampard’s south west London natives also had difficulties offloading some of their fringe players to raise the funds needed to meet West Ham’s asking price, and could now wait until next summer to test their hand once more.

It is expected that Rice will remain high on the shopping list drawn up at Stamford Bridge over the next year if his performances and form continue on the same trajectory.

GSB success story

While the summer was fraught with failed attempts to bring players to the London Stadium, with bids occasionally well below a club’s asking price like Burnley’s £50million demand for James Tarkowski, Gold and Sullivan deserve respect for their decision to keep Rice.

GSB could easily have opted to use Rice as their cash-cow and put to good use the multiple millions of pounds Chelsea would still have been asked to hand over, but instead decided not to sell one of their brightest stars to plug gaps elsewhere.

The decision could come back to haunt Gold and Sullivan if David Moyes is not greeted with new faces from the English Football League in the coming week, and goes on to suffer issues up and down the spine of his side over the campaign – but for now he will be glad to have Rice to hand.

Rice has started and played the full 90 minutes in each of West Ham’s last 42 Premier League games and only failed to feature four times in the Irons’ last 88 top-flight encounters, dating back to March 2018.

Over his 38 top-flight outings last term, Rice also ranked second for interceptions (2.0) and third for successful tackles (3.1) per 90 minutes of those who featured for West Ham on more than five occasions, per WhoScored, and is currently on 2.3 for tackles and 49 passes.

As coisas mudaram. Ficamos felizes.
