Aston Villa fans react to Tagliafico link

Aston Villa could make a move for Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico during the January transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Interested clubs may have the ‘opportunity’ to land the 29-year-old this month as ‘he could leave Ajax’. Villa have approached the player’s camp but have yet to open talks with the Amsterdam club, and Steven Gerrard’s side could face competition for the Argentine’s signature.

His name has been ‘discussed internally’ at Chelsea after Ben Chilwell suffered a potentially season-ending injury. Newcastle United could also be in the frame, with the Magpies set to make a call on their left-back situation ‘soon’.

Nicolas Tagliafico to Villa?

Tagliafico, who is valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt and has 18 months left on his contract, would compete with Matt Targett for the left-back berth at Villa Park.

He has been capped 36 times by his country and was part of the Ajax team which reached the semi-finals of the 2018/19 Champions League, only to fall dramatically to Tottenham Hotspur at that stage. He has also drawn comparisons with legendary compatriot Javier Zanetti, an indicator of his vast quality.

Fan feed Villa Report relayed Romano’s claim, and here’s how some fans reacted.

New Zealand put faith in Peter Ingram at No.3

Mark Greatbatch, the New Zealand coach and selector, has backed Peter Ingram to hold his place for this week’s first Test against Australia

Brydon Coverdale in Wellington15-Mar-2010Mark Greatbatch, the New Zealand coach and selector, has backed Peter Ingram to hold his place for this week’s first Test against Australia despite his axing from the one-day team. Ingram’s lack of footwork was exposed by Australia’s fast men in the ODI series and he was cut for the final match. The inclusion of the veteran top-order batsman Mathew Sinclair in the 13-man Test squad raised the possibility that Ingram would lose his place in the five-day side, but the selectors will give him another chance. Ingram’s only Test appearance came in the win over Bangladesh in Hamilton, where he made 42 and 13, and he will need to lift against Australia.”Peter Ingram, the last three years in domestic cricket, has averaged 60,” Greatbatch said on Monday. “That’s where he has really excelled, in domestic cricket, and obviously the test is to jump up. He’s had one Test against Bangladesh.”The core group of this squad has been involved in the last four Test matches with Pakistan [and Bangladesh], and we’ve won two of them, drew one and lost one. We want to give those opportunities to those players and Peter to show his skills at the highest level.”Greatbatch said Sinclair, 34, was unlikely to add to his 32 Tests during this series unless there was an injury in the batting line-up. Sinclair has not played a Test since March 2008 but has remained in terrific form at domestic level and this season has scored 638 Plunket Shield runs at an average of 58.”Mathew, 18 months ago, had an opportunity previously with five or six Test matches and it didn’t quite work out for him,” Greatbatch said. “At the time, the selectors said they were going to look at some other players. Time always moves on for everybody but Mathew has been in good form for the last year and a half, two years.”He’s the cover top-order batter for the Tests, so unless there’s an injury he won’t play, but it’s nice to have him back in the environment. He’s experienced, he’s mature and he’s got competitive juices so that’s what we’re going to require against these guys.”The top order of Tim McIntosh, BJ Watling and Ingram lacks Test experience and the New Zealanders will be keen to reinstate Jesse Ryder to the side as soon as possible. Ryder is on the recovery path after having surgery in February to reinforce his abdominal wall after suffering groin problems, and the New Zealand management team will keep a close eye on him over the next week.”He’s in the process,” Greatbatch said of Ryder’s recovery. “He’s got a bit of a plan. He’s played two days of club cricket and it’s gone well. Obviously we need to wait and see whether he’s fit this week. He’s actually coming down to training over the next few days to be involved and just see where he’s at.”For the time being, New Zealand will have to rely on a top three who between them have played 14 Tests. The most experienced of those men, the opener McIntosh, has played 11, but standing up to Mitchell Johnson, Doug Bollinger and the rest of the Australian attack will be a new challenge.”I haven’t faced any of them,” McIntosh said. “Any confrontation when you face a new Test bowler is one you look forward to. I know all the guys are chomping at the bit.”

Battle of the unpredictable begins

Match facts

December 26-30, 2009
Start time 10.30am (23.30 GMT)

Big Picture

It’s hard to know what to expect from a contest between the team that hasplayed the most Tests over the past two years and the side that has playedthe fewest. Australia’s hectic schedule means they’ve played 27 Tests sincethis time in 2007, while Pakistan’s home circumstances have limited them toeight Tests in the same period. Australia are coming off a 2-0, thoughtightly-fought, series against West Indies. Pakistan have just drawn 1-1in New Zealand. In years gone you could confidently predict not just an Australian win,but a rout, so dominant have they been against Pakistan since the mid-90s.But this is a different Australia side and as the series against WestIndies proved, one closer back to the pack than ever before. This Pakistanside retains the essence of all Pakistan sides and thus capable ofanything. What can be expected for sure is some high quality pace bowling. After adecade of batting riches, cricket suddenly finds itself with good fastbowlers floating around and few are more exciting than the ones Australiaand Pakistan have; between them, Doug Bollinger, Peter Siddle, MitchellJohnson, Mohammad Aamer, Mohammmad Asif and Umar Gul are likely todetermine the fate of the series. If Pakistan feel they have the better spinners in Danish Kaneria and SaeedAjmal, Australia will be more than confident that their batting is by farthe stronger. But if all goes well, it could be the most closely-foughtseries between the two sides since the 1994-95 tussle in Pakistan.

Form guide (last five Tests, most recent first)

Australia – WDWLW
Pakistan – DWLDL

Watch out for

Doug Bollinger: He has become Australia’s newest cult bowling hero. Heentertains his team-mates with his antics, thrills the fans with hiswholeheartedness and good humour, and worries the opposition with his pace, swing and consistency. Chris Gayle made no secret of the fact that he feltBollinger was the most dangerous of Australia’s fast men during the recentTest series and Bollinger will be desperate to ensure his place in theattack becomes permanent.Three hundreds on an impressive Pakistan A tour to Australia in Julybrought Umar Akmal into the national side and he hasn’t stoppedscoring since; he already has two international hundreds and a spate offifties. He was hugely impressive in his maiden Test tour against NewZealand and his clear-headed aggression and a steady technique should winhim more fans here.

Team news

All the talk in the lead-up to the Test has surrounded Ricky Ponting’sfitness after suffering elbow tendon damage in the third Test against WestIndies. He trained well on Thursday and Friday and is more than likely totake his place in the side come Boxing Day. On the off chance he is ruledout, Phillip Hughes will come in. Siddle also looks set to return inplace of fellow Victorian Clint McKay after sitting out the WACA Testagainst West Indies with a hamstring strain. Siddle bowled withouttrouble in a state one-day match on Wednesday. A long-standing groinproblem for Nathan Hauritz has opened the doors for young legspinner SteveSmith, but Australia will give Hauritz time till the morning of the Testbefore making a final call.Australia (probable) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Simon Katich, 3 Ricky Ponting(capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Michael Clarke, 6 Marcus North, 7 Brad Haddin(wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Nathan Hauritz/Steve Smith, 10 Peter Siddle, 11 DougBollinger.Pakistan have no such injury concerns though a niggle to the fourth fingeron Danish Kaneria’s spinning hand is being looked at. There is talk in thecamp of playing an extra spinner in place of a fast bowler, but that willdepend on the surface and a decision is expected later. Pakistan will notreadily dismantle the pace trio that served them so well in New Zealand.Pakistan (probable) 1 Salman Butt, 2 Imran Farhat, 3 Faisal Iqbal,4 Mohammad Yousuf (capt), 5 Misbah-ul-Haq, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Kamran Akmal(wk), 8 Mohammad Aamer, 9 Umar Gul/Saeed Ajmal, 10 Mohammad Asif, 11Danish Kaneria

Pitch and conditions

The drop-in MCG pitches have generally provided a slowish surface in recentyears and the runs haven’t always flowed as easily as at other venues. Theforecast for the five days is mostly good, with temperatures expected torise as the game goes on.

Stats and Trivia

  • Pakistan have played eight Tests at the MCG for two wins, in 1978-79and 1981-82
  • Australia’s loss to South Africa in Melbourne last summer ended a runof nine consecutive wins for Australia at the MCG
  • The MCG is the only one of Australia’s five major venues at whichMichael Clarke has not scored a Test century

Quotes

“I think the conditions here and probably in Sydney as well will helpPakistan.”
“Because Australia don’t have McGrath and Warney anymore, there are morechances of sides coming and playing well over here.”

Wolves handed huge injury boost

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been handed a hefty injury boost ahead of their upcoming Premier League fixture.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by the Express & Star, Bruno Lage revealed that Bruno Jordao, who has not featured competitively for Wolves for 16 months due to a knee injury, is finally back in training with the first-team squad, and could be in contention for the trip to Norwich City on Saturday.

Asked whether the central midfielder is once again an option for his matchday squads, the 45-year-old said: “Yes, he’s one more. He started working two or three days ago. He needs time.

“We have six weeks to work with him and after see if he’s ready to compete for a place or if he needs to take another decision. I am very happy with him. I knew him when I arrived and saw him since the first day working hard to come back as soon as possible.

“Now he needs to show me on the pitch that he wants to fight for a place in the team. I need to see Bruno. I want to give him a lot of confidence to be ready to train and compete and try to understand the dynamic he can give us.

“I saw some games from him in the past but it’s soon for me to make a conclusion on what he can give to our team. Since the first day, he has been a good professional. I am very happy with that mentality.”

Lage will be buzzing

Considering just how short of options Lage currently is in the middle of the park, the return of Jordao, particularly with the hectic Christmas schedule of the Premier League soon upon us, is sure to have left the Portuguese manager buzzing.

Indeed, prior to the 23-year-old’s return, the Wolves boss had just Ruben Neves, Leander Dendoncker or Joao Moutinho to pick from in central midfield, with this trio having returned just one goal and one assist over their accumulative 32 top-flight appearances.

And, while Jordao is by no means an out and out attacking midfielder, the former Portugal U21 international has scored one goal over his four first-team appearances since his £8.01m move to Molineux back in the summer of 2019, something which would suggest he could be used as a more attack-minded option by Lage.

In any case, the return of an extra body in the middle of the park is undoubtedly a huge boost for the 45-year-old manager, who will be looking to continue his side’s run of excellent form against Norwich City this weekend.

Man Utd linked to Dusan Vlahovic

Manchester United are reportedly lining up a move for Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic in the upcoming January transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to talkSPORT, the Red Devils are one of several Premier League teams interested in securing the highly-rated 21-year-old’s signature this winter, with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur also listed as potential suitors.

With just 18 months left to run on his current contract, Vlahovic is believed to have turned down a new deal that would have made him the highest-paid player in La Viola’s history, opening the door to an imminent exit.

Ralf Rangnick must swoop

The Serbia international has become one of the hottest properties in European football over the last 18 months after putting in a string of impressive performances for Fiorentina.

After notching up 21 goals in 40 appearances last term, Vlahovic has elevated his game to new heights this time around, bagging a remarkable 17 strikes in just 19 outings in all competitions.

The youngster’s outstanding exploits in Italy have seen him dubbed a “complete number nine” by Serie A expert Conor Clancy, while talent scout Jacek Kulig labelled him a “machine,” highlighting his truly top-class potential.

Although United are currently well-stocked in the forward positions, Edinson Cavani is out of contract next summer, Anthony Martial is desperate to depart and Cristiano Ronaldo is set to turn 37 in February.

Therefore, new interim manager Ralf Rangnick must swoop for Vlahovic over the coming months, fending off the extensive competition for his signature.

With long-term target Erling Haaland appearing to be out of their reach following the recent comments by his controversial agent Mino Raiola, the 6 foot 2 beast is a great alternative option capable of providing a similar level of firepower.

It has previously been claimed in recent reports that Fiorentina are set to demand £70m for their prized asset as Vincenzo Italiano’s charges look to maximise their profits, but if Vlahovic can fire the 20-time English champions back to their previous perch, it will be deemed money well spent.

And, in other news…Imagine him & Bruno: Ralf can form scary MUFC duo by landing “exceptional” £33m beast

Passando, pensar no Bahia.

India in battle for survival

There’s a lot riding on this day-night encounter and neither team enters the match in peak form

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale27-Sep-2009Match factsMonday, September 28, 2009
Start time 14.30, 12.30 GMTBig pictureThere are all sorts of scenarios and permutations about which teams could make it through to the semi-finals in Group A but the simplest is this: if Australia beat India, it will be Pakistan and Australia who progress. The group will be done and dusted with two games to go. Things become more complex if India win. They will be in prime position due to their remaining game against a weakened West Indies and Australia’s fixture against an unbeaten Pakistan. However, should India and Australia either both win or both lose their last group game, net run-rate will be required to determine the semi-finalists.It means that there’s a lot riding on this day-night encounter and neither team enters the match in peak form. India have the advantage of familiarity with the conditions at Centurion, where they lost to Pakistan on Saturday. Australia are coming off a win but it was a scratchy and in parts unconvincing victory against an under-strength West Indies in the different conditions at the Wanderers. It’s hard to predict a winner, though the bookmakers favour Australia.Australia will be most concerned about breaking India’s opening partnership early; Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar have troubled Ricky Ponting’s men in the past and Australia’s fast bowlers lacked penetration against West Indies. The presence or absence of the stiff and sore Michael Clarke looms as another potential key. Unlike India, Australia aren’t automatically out if they lose but it will be a hard road back. The teams meet for seven one-dayers in India in October and November but none will matter as much as this game.Form guide (last five completed matches, most recent first)Australia – WLWWW
India – LWLWW
Team newsClarke’s stiff back ruled him out of the game against West Indies and Australia will be hoping he can get up for what should be a much tougher contest with India. Should Clarke prove his fitness, Australia must decide who to leave out and it’s not an easy decision. Callum Ferguson, Cameron White and James Hopes are the likely contenders to drop out of the side and despite an excellent start to his international career, Ferguson could be the unlucky one as he does not offer a bowling option.Australia (possible): 1 Shane Watson, 2 Tim Paine (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Callum Ferguson/Michael Clarke, 6 Cameron White, 7 James Hopes, 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Nathan Hauritz, 11 Peter Siddle.MS Dhoni said he felt three bowlers short at times, such was the ease with which runs were scored in the middle of Pakistan’s innings, and India are certain to play five specialist bowlers on Monday. Harbhajan Singh did not bowl well against Pakistan but he is a bogey player for Australia and regularly lifts against them. The other bowling options in India’s squad are Praveen Kumar and the legspinner Amit Mishra, who is a strong contender. Praveen could edge in ahead of RP Singh, who took 1 for 59 in nine overs against Pakistan.India (possible): 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Yusuf Pathan/Amit Mishra, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 RP Singh/Praveen Kumar, 10, Ishant Sharma, 11 Ashish Nehra.Watch out for…He might have retired from Twenty20 internationals but Ricky Ponting remains Australia’s most important player in ODI cricket. He was magnificent in compiling 79 against West Indies in difficult conditions and a big Ponting score can be the difference between mediocrity and dominance from Australia. He has made plenty of runs against India, but Harbhajan and Ishant Sharma have caused him problems. As always with Ponting, the key is piercing his defences within his first couple of overs at the crease.Ishant Sharma was one of the better bowlers against Pakistan with figures of 2 for 39, but he has struggled for consistency. But he has enjoyed success against Australia in the past and has nine ODI wickets at 19.33 against them. Importantly for India, he has a bit of a hold on Ponting, having dismissed him six times in international cricket. The ball angling in to the top of off stump troubles Ponting early and Ishant will be a key man for India for that reason alone. He has also dismissed Clarke six times, so Ishant may be hoping Australia’s vice-captain passes his fitness test.Pitch and conditions India have the advantage of having just played in Centurion, where the conditions are different to the Wanderers. The surface is much slower and provides more assistance to the spinners. Runs are available if the bowlers fail to adjust and Australia will need to sharpen their efforts after struggling to run through West Indies on a cracking and helpful Johannesburg pitch. There is also a strong chance of showers in the evening, so the teams should bear that in mind at the toss.Stats and trivia Australia and India seem to play each other so often that it’s hard to believe they haven’t met in an ODI for 18 months, when India wrapped up the CB Series at the Gabba. It’s so long ago that Adam Gilchrist was still playing India have won four of eight ODIs they’ve played in Centurion; Australia have won four of seven. Both teams have lost their past two one-dayers there Not since 2003 have India won a one-day international in South Africa; in the meantime they’ve lost sixThe last time these teams met at Centurion, India were walloped by nine wickets, during the 2003 World CupQuotes”We all know we need to play better than we did today against India”
“From now on it’s like a knockout tournament for us. If we don’t play well we can pack up our bags and go home.”

Newcastle: Caulkin issues Fonseca update

Paulo Fonseca isn’t as close to the Newcastle United job as has been made out in some quarters, The Athletic’s George Caulkin has warned.

The lowdown

Newcastle are looking to appoint a new manager after parting company with Steve Bruce and leaving assistant Graeme Jones in temporary charge.

There had been ‘a suggestion’ that Fonseca was ‘on the verge’ of taking over at St James’ Park prior to Newcastle’s weekend clash with Crystal Palace after he held talks with the new owners (via The Daily Mail).

Fonseca has been out of work since the end of last season when he left Serie A outfit AS Roma on the expiry of his contract.

The latest

In a tweet which seems to have gone unnoticed, Caulkin reiterated that talks had indeed taken place between the consortium and the Portuguese.

But he also said that, according to his information, the move isn’t in its final stages.

“Well, they’ve spoken to him a couple of times, we know that,” he wrote. “But I was also told today that nothing is as far advanced as has been said. Let’s see.”

The update has gone under the radar due to it being a reply to a fan as part of a long thread – it has just two retweets despite Caulkin having 90,000+ followers.

The verdict

How much longer can Newcastle afford to wait? Well, the international break is approaching and that might be a sensible juncture for transition.

Even if a new boss was to be installed this week, you could argue he’d have little hope of getting a result against league leaders Chelsea.

But Newcastle also face Brighton and Hove Albion before the domestic season pauses, and they’re in desperate need of points after failing to win any of their first nine games.
