Ênio será titular do Botafogo contra o Madureira; veja provável time

West Indies' chance to seal semi berth

If West Indies win in Nagpur, they’re through to the last four of the World T20 and South Africa’s journey there becomes that much harder

The Preview by Firdose Moonda24-Mar-2016Match factsFriday, March 25, 2016
Start time 1930 local (1400 GMT)2:07

Match Day – Drop Abbott or Rabada, play Phangiso

Big PictureIt has been talked up as the fixture that will decide Group 1, making the match-up between South Africa and West Indies perhaps the most intriguing of the group so far.West Indies hold the aces after two wins from their opening two matches. A third will see them take control of the group and set themselves up to top it, with only Afghanistan left to play. It will also guarantee them a semi-final berth.South Africa remain far away from such safety. Defeat to England means that even after beating Afghanistan, they still have to deal with the two most recent champions if they are to ensure advancement. On paper, South Africa should not be too anxious of the West Indian challenge, but we all know the saying about where sport is actually played. In sharp focus will be the contrasting approaches of these two sides. Well-planned South Africa take on carefree West Indies, perhaps the last people they want to see when under pressure – it means South Africa have to think of what they can expect and what they can’t from a West Indies side that thrives on the spontaneous. Already, one of South Africa’s strategies – to use JP Duminy to bowl more – has been spoiled because Duminy is injured. West Indies don’t even have that worry after Chris Gayle’s injury scare passed. For both sides, this may be their toughest test before the knockouts. As such, whoever wins this may become favourite for the title.Form guide South Africa: WLLLW (last five completed games, most recent first)
West Indies: WWWLLIn the spotlight With spin set to take centre-stage Imran Tahir and Samuel Badree could be game-changers, albeit in different ways. Badree has opened the bowling against England and Sri Lanka, against whom he was both container and destroyer-in-chief, while Tahir tends to be held back for when the fielding restrictions are lifted. Both times, he has been successful in pulling back opposition from fast starts but they may not get off to those if he is used earlier on.Should South Africa be pondering any experimentation in the PowerPlay, then Nagpur will be the venue and West Indies the team to do it against. Unlike Mumbai, where South Africa conceded 89 and then 64 against England and Afghanistan respectively, things will slow down at VCA and West Indies already seem to like it that way. They’ve scored 55 and 39 in their previous two PowerPlays but, importantly, have only lost one wicket in each to ensure they stick to a more traditional approach of keeping firepower for the end.Team news JP Duminy’s injury-enforced absence means the balance of South Africa’s side will be affected. They will have to bring in a batsman to replace Duminy in the middle-order with Rilee Rossouw and Farhaan Behardien competing for the spot, but they will also need to make room for an extra spinner. Aaron Phangiso should make his first international appearance in five months, at the expense of either Chris Morris or David Wiese. Kagiso Rabada will have to lead the attack if Dale Steyn continues to sit out.South Africa: 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Faf du Plessis (capt), 4 AB de Villiers, 5 Rilee Rossouw/Farhaan Behardien 6 David Miller, 7 David Wiese/Chris Morris, 8 Kyle Abbott 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Aaron Phangiso 11 Imran TahirChris Gayle has been declared fit to face South Africa after tweaking his hamstring in the Sri Lanka match, which should see West Indies go in with the same XI as they used for that game.West Indies: 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Johnson Charles, 3 Andre Fletcher, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Dinesh Ramdin (wk), 6 Andre Russell, 7 Dwayne Bravo, 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Carlos Brathwaite, 10 Samuel Badree, 11 Sulieman BennPitch and conditions The pitch is under severe scrutiny after the qualifying round was played on a sluggish surface. The ball struggled to reach the bat and there was significant turn, which was also evident during the India-New Zealand clash. On Wednesday, two days before this match, the ICC’s pitch consultant Andy Atkinson oversaw preparations, with game-strip moving to an adjacent surface to the one the first round and the opening match of the Super 10s were played on. The new surface has been watered recently and has more grass, so is expected to hold together better, which could mean the spinners may not play as much of a starring role they were being primed for. That does not mean it will be easy-going and South Africa’s coach Russell Domingo’s assertion that the batsmen will have to “earn the money” will still hold, especially in hot, humid conditions.Stats and Trivia South Africa have the historical advantage over West Indies. They have won six of the nine T20Is played between them. But West Indies have enjoyed more recent success. They claimed the series against South Africa in January 2015 The first of Chris Gayle’s two T20I hundreds was scored against South Africa, in September 2007. The second came at this tournament, against England Hashim Amla is 49 runs away from becoming the fourth South African to 1,000 T20I runsQuotes “I’ve said it many times, once we do what we do well, we are a force to reckon with. We are very destructive. We’ve doing just the basic things well.”
“[When] you peak at the right time, that’s when you win tournaments. When it happens the other way around, you generally fall out in those [big] games. As a team, we’ve been possibly going at 60-70% for a while and I’m hoping that we’ll step up a gear when it comes to crunch time.”

CSK seal top spot with thumping win

Chennai Super Kings 134 for 3 (Du Plessis 55, Raina 41) beat Kings XI Punjab 130 for 7 (Axar 32, Negi 2-25, Ashwin 1-14) by seven wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsFaf du Plessis hit five fours and a six for his 55•BCCI

Kings XI Punjab’s final match followed the narrative of much of their season, as their underwhelming 130 for 7 in Mohali was reeled in with seven wickets and 20 balls to spare by Chennai Super Kings. Six of the seven bowlers Super Kings used picked up wickets, with left-arm spinner Pawan Negi taking two. They sealed their position at the top of the table, and are assured a place in the first qualifier. Faf du Plessis hit 55 from 41 balls to lead the largely straightforward chase. Suresh Raina stayed unbeaten on 41 at the finish, with a 16-ball 25 from MS Dhoni hastening the end.Kings XI began brightly enough, as Wriddhiman Saha – the star of their Wednesday win over Royal Challengers Bangalore – hit a four in Negi’s first over, then rocked back to launch Ishwar Pandey into the stands beyond square leg soon after. Expecting more aggression, Negi looped the second ball of his second over up outside off stump, and drew the false shot. Saha had attempted to thrash the ball over the off side, but managed only to lob it to cover, to collect 15 from 12.Ashish Nehra then struck with his first ball, pushing one across George Bailey who sent a nick through to the wicketkeeper . The wickets just kept tumbling thereafter. Manan Vohra top-edged a cut shot to third man to leave his side 35 for 3 in the sixth over. Gurkeerat Singh Mann hoped to attack his side out of the mire, when he advanced to R Ashwin immediately after cutting him behind point for four in the ninth over, but the bowler anticipated the batsman’s advance. Ashwin slowed up the ball, pitched short, and spun it past Gurkeerat’s thigh pad, for Dhoni to complete a simple stumping.Glen Maxwell was out playing around a straightforward delivery from Ravindra Jadeja. David Miller was caught superbly on the legside outfield when he had nearly bludgeoned the cover off the ball. Nothing Kings XI’s top order did seemed to result in a meaningful partnership. There was no clear theme to their downfall on a batting-friendly surface, save perhaps for several batsmen’s scrambled approach after a tough season.Rishi Dhawan and Axar Patel put on the innings’ longest stand – a 44-run effort that pushed the team above 120. But even with the 14-run 19th over off Dwayne Bravo, the hosts did not appear to have made enough.Michael Hussey, playing his first game of the season, and Brendon McCullum, playing his last, were each dismissed inside two overs to raise the crowd’s hopes of an upset. But du Plessis and Raina coasted through the early and middle overs, attacking only the wayward deliveries to stay in touch with the modest required rate. Du Plessis’ running six over long on and pull shot past deep midwicket off Axar in the 12th over was as violent as his innings got.He was bowled making room to hit through the off side with victory in sight, but Dhoni waltzed in and quickly secured the two points. He hit two sixes off Anureet Singh, then all but finished the game with a glide to third man.

Sehwag, Gambhir opt out of Deodhar Trophy

Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir’s prospects of making an India comeback are all but over, as the pair stayed away from selection for the 15-member North Zone squad for the Deodhar Trophy

Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir had a disappointing run in the Vijay Hazare Trophy•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir’s prospects of making an India comeback are all but over, as the pair stayed away from selection for the 15-member North Zone squad for the Deodhar Trophy. The team will be led by Harbhajan Singh, and the North Zone selection committee, headed by national selector Vikram Rathour, decided to reward all those who had performed well in the North Zone leg of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. It is believed that Sehwag had told some of the top DDCA officials that he did not want to block the road of promising juniors from Delhi, while the reason for Gambhir opting out is still unclear.”Today, at the start of the selection committee meeting, the chairman Vikram Rathour intimated us that Viru [Sehwag] has specifically told him that he doesn’t want to play Deodhar Trophy,” a member of the North Zone selection committee told PTI. “He has insisted that some of the promising juniors may be picked. Gauti [Gambhir] has also decided against playing but I have no clue about why he pulled out.”There are enough indications that Sehwag and Gambhir are fully aware that there is very little chance for either of them to make the World Cup squad, as India’s three first-choice openers are all in good form, with M Vijay available as cover. In any case, Sehwag and Gambhir’s selection would have come under scanner, as the pair tallied just 122 and 178 runs respectively from five matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, although they did share a 144-run stand to power Delhi to victory against Haryana. The only experienced members in the North Zone side are Harbhajan, Yuvraj Singh, Mohit Sharma and Amit Mishra, with most of the team comprising of youngsters. Former India Under-19 captain Unmukt Chand has also been selected despite a poor run of 36 runs from five matches due to his “promise”. Unmukt had recently scored a century for India A against West Indians in a warm-up game, and is considered to be one for the future, as is Manan Vohra.Pacer Vikas Tokas and batsman Milind Kumar are the other two players from Delhi to make the squad. Punjab youngsters Gurkeerat Singh Mann and Mandeep Singh, and Jammu and Kashmir’s Parveez Rasool have all been selected based on their recent performances. With none of the wicketkeeper-batsmen doing particularly well, Services’ Nakul Verma pipped Nitin Saini and Puneet Bisht to a place in the team.North will meet East Zone in the semi-finals on November 29 in Mumbai.Squad: Harbhajan Singh (Captain), Unmukt Chand, Manan Vohra, Mandeep Singh, Yuvraj Singh, Milind Kumar, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Rishi Dhawan, Amit Mishra, Parveez Rasool, Mohit Sharma, Sandeep Sharma, Nakul verma (Wk), Taruwar Kohli, Vikas Tokas.

Warwickshire may prove team to beat

Last year

4th, CC Div 1; Group stages, FLt20; 7th in Group A, YB40

2013 in a nutshell

It says something for the expectations at Edgbaston that a fourth place finish in the Championship is considered a disappointment. But, after winning the title in 2012 and assembling an unusually strong squad, much was expected last year. Warwickshire never really challenged, though, and endured a wretched limited-overs season. They finished bottom of the YB40 group, beneath the Netherlands, and gave themselves an impossible task in FLt20 after losing their first three games. There were mitigating factors. New director of cricket, Dougie Brown, almost never had a full squad to select from with his side disproportionately hit by injury and England call-ups; at once stage they were lacking five bowlers who had been in England squads in previous months. The prolonged loss of Chris Wright and Jim Troughton with back injuries was particularly damaging. After it became clear that they had no hope of progressing in the YB40, they also decided to use the remainder of the competition to provide experience to younger squad members. There were success stories, too: Keith Barker continued his development and looked one of the most dangerous new ball bowlers in the country, while Varun Chopra underlined his status as one of the most consistent batsmen in county cricket. Laurie Evans and Ateeq Javid also made huge strides with the bat and were largely responsible for keeping the side’s head above water at times. No side lost fewer games in the Championship’s top division than Warwickshire and the presence of three players in the England XI for the final Test exemplified the contribution to the England cause.

2014 prospects

Expectations remain high at Edgbaston. With arguably the strongest bowling attack in the country and a batting line-up that goes on forever and will include, for at least the first month of the season, Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell, Warwickshire expect to mount a serious challenge on the Championship. The new ball will be taken by Wright and Barker with Chris Woakes, hoping to force his way into the England team as an allrounder, first change and vying for a place at No. 5 or No. 6 in the batting line-up. Rikki Clarke and Boyd Rankin will provide back-of-a-length pace once the shine of the ball has worn, though how the latter returns after a chastening winter with England remains to be seen. Jeetan Patel, whose off-spin bowling and aggressive lower-order batting have proved so valuable in recent seasons, returns as primary overseas player and will again prove especially potent when utilising the footmarks created by Barker. After Kumar Sangakkara and Shahid Afridi turned down approaches, Shoaib Malik has been brought in as a second overseas player in the T20 Blast. Richard Jones, signed from Worcestershire, Recordo Gordon and Oliver Hannon-Dalby will compete for bowling spots when call-ups and injuries allow. The one potential weakness looks to be in the batting. If Trott and Bell are absent, there are holes in the line-up that will need to be filled by the likes of Freddie Coleman or Sam Hain. The absence of Troughton will be felt keenly in the opening weeks of the season, too. While his batting has been a fading force for some time, his leadership skills are highly respected and cannot be easily replaced. Warwickshire hope that the move to 50-over cricket will aid their accumulative style and, with a team stuffed with allrounders, they should improve their limited-overs form.

Key player

Tim Ambrose is one of the forgotten men of English cricket. Despite the fact that he remains one of the best glovemen in the country, has a Test century to his name and scored an unbeaten 76 in his last Test innings – at Bridgetown in 2009 – he is seldom mentioned as an alternative to Matt Prior et al. But England’s loss is Warwickshire’s gain and, in the 31-year-old, they have a tough, experienced cricketer equally adept at digging his side out of trouble or pushing on following a strong start. There are some worries about long-term wear and tear issues – a hip problem has been a recurring theme of recent seasons – but if Ambrose can remain fit for all three formats, Warwickshire look a much stronger side. Peter McKay, an able keeper and decent batsman though not in Ambrose’s class, is his deputy

Bright young thing

Such was the impression that Sam Hain made when he appeared at a first team net session, several senior players remarked that he might just be the most talented young batsmen they had seen. Hain, like Sam Robson of Middlesex, was brought up in Australia – he has played for Australia U19 – and could yet return there. He did not score the second XI runs anticipated of him in 2013 but, at 18, has time on his side. Warwickshire, will keen not to burden him with expectation, are suggesting privately he could be the successor to Bell. Aaron Thomason, a 16-year-old seam-bowling all-rounder, is unlikely to break into the 1st XI this season, but looks an exciting prospect.

Captain/coach

Dougie Brown enters his second season as director of cricket, but with Alan Richardson having joined as bowling coach from Worcestershire. The previous bowling coach, Graeme Welch, who doubled as assistant coach, has moved on to Derbyshire. Tony Frost is the batting coach. Jim Troughton remains club captain but will miss the first few weeks of the season following surgery on a long-standing back injury that might hasten the end of his career. In his absence, Bell or Chopra will captain.

ESPNcricinfo verdict

At full strength, Warwickshire have as strong a squad as any and may prove the team to beat in the Championship. But while they surely have the bowling depth to withstand the inevitable call-ups and injuries, the depth of their batting will be sorely tested should Trott be recalled to rejoin Bell in the international teams. Even so, they should be able to improve substantially on their limited-overs form and will surely challenge for the Championship title. The downside of the expectation at Warwickshire is that pressure will mount quickly should results not go their way.
