Top order failure puts Lankans in command

A familiar top order batting failure left champions Pakistan with their backs against the wall on the opening day of the Asian Test Championship final against Sri Lanka at Gaddafi Stadium Wednesday.Undisciplined batting combined with poor stroke selection led to Pakistan being dismissed for a modest 234.Sri Lanka strengthened their grip when they showed the hosts the art of batting in a big match by reaching 94 for one despite losing Marvan Atapattu on the first ball of their innings. Sanath Jayasuriya was batting on 47 and with him was Kumar Sangakkara on 39.In ideal conditions Pakistan batsmen repeated the same old mistakes that have plagued them – lack of application, determination and commitment. Most of the batsmen made brisk starts and timed the ball nicely to show that they were not struggling to put bat to the ball. But they failed to prolong their innings when they perished to reckless shots. The strokes that led to the demise of Younis Khan and Inzamam-ul-Haq, shortly before lunch, summed up Pakistan’s mental strength. Younis, having hit Muttiah Muralitharan for two fours and a six off successive deliveries, attempted a paddle sweep to ddrag the ball onto his stumps. Inzamam, three balls later, tried to cut Bhuddika Fernando to be caught by Jayasuriya at first slip. The home team batsmen further exposed their inability to learn from mistakes when an in-form Yousuf Youhana repeated a similar shot like Inzamam to be snapped up by Sangakkara at the wicket off Fernando.Abdul Razzaq, dropped second ball, trusted his pads more than his bat when he offered no stroke off a straight delivery from Chaminda Vaas to be adjudged leg before. It would not be an exaggeration to say the batsmen committed hara-kiri. At times they looked they were playing limited overs cricket evident from the fact that when half of the side was back in the dressing room, the scoreboard showed 127 runs off just 27.2 overs. Probably, Muralitharan’s presence played in the minds of the Pakistanis. But Fernando was an unlikely hero for Sri Lanka when he picked up three top order wickets to finish the day with three for 84. With Fernando exposing the tail, Muralitharan got into the lower order to take four for 55. Vaas bagged two for 62 but was far from his best when he overstepped 10 times as Sri Lanka were generous enough to concede 31 extras – 27 through no-balls.Pakistan, put into bat, made a typical poor start when both the openers were back in the dressing room inside six overs in contrasting styles. Taufiq Umer was caught at forward short leg while playing a tentative forward defensive stroke. Two balls later Shahid Afridi was tragically run-out in a mix-up with Younis.Inzamam and Younis repaired the damage by adding 86 for the third wicket in 86 minutes before a double blow left Pakistan tottering at 108 for four at lunch. Younis slammed eight boundaries and a six in his 66-ball innings. Pakistan never recovered and slumped to 147 for six shortly after lunch before Rashid Latif played a gutsy innings of 36, striking five fours in his 119-minute vigil at the crease.Earlier in the day, Pakistan dropped Saqlain Mushtaq and included Shoaib Malik. While the team management showed wisdom by not playing Shoaib in the top order, they made a fool of themselves when the off-spinner was sent ahead of Rashid Latif. It may be recalled that Rashid scored 150 and 47 not out in the first Test against the West Indies last month.

Phillips reacts to ‘great’ West Ham news

Speaking to Football Insider, pundit and Sky Sports regular Kevin Phillips has reacted to claims involving West Ham United star Declan Rice after club insider Claret & Hugh shared Manchester United’s rather bizarre new transfer stance.

The Lowdown: United interest cools for Rice

Recently, insider C&H shared news from United in regards to a swoop for star man Rice – with the outlet claiming that Red Devils scouts are having second thoughts over the price tag and his lack of pace.

This comes after heavy links with a move to Old Trafford, with the 22-year-old West Ham star also attracting recent interest from the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Any club that comes in for Rice would have invest heavily, however, as GSB apparently value him upwards of £100 million.

The Latest: Phillips reacts to Rice claim

In reaction to C&H’s claim involving United scouts and West Ham’s star asset, Phillips is amazed over the alleged stance on Rice from United officials.

However, he also believes this could come as ‘great news’ for the Irons overall.

“I do not think it is a fair assessment saying Rice is too slow,” he explained to FI.

“I think he covers the ground quite well. He is a bit like Jordan Henderson. It is not his kind of role.

“It amazes me when people say he is too slow. Look at McTominay, I’d say Declan is a bit quicker than him.

“It is great news for West Ham though. The more that pull out the better for them! David Moyes will be hoping they all think he is too slow!”

The Verdict: West Ham should be overjoyed…

One big fear for West Ham is losing Rice in the summer and it’s safe to say his exit would be a huge blow to manager David Moyes.

A lot will depend on whether the Irons secure European qualification at the end of this season, and a previously unprecedented surge into the Champions League places could increase the odds of Rice committing his future.

C&H’s news that United scouts have took a bizarre fresh stance on star man definitely comes a boost given that’s one less horse allegedly dropping out of the race.

Phillips certainly has every right to call it ‘great news’ for West Ham.

AVFC: Fans react to club’s Champions League Final offer

Plenty of Aston Villa fans have been reacting to the news that Villa Park could play host to this year’s Champions League Final.

Both Manchester City and Chelsea booked their place in the last two following wins over Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid respectively earlier this week, with the final scheduled to take place in Istanbul on May 29.

However, according to reliable Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett, Villa have offered up Villa Park to UEFA as an alternative venue.

Dorsett claims that huge changes to infrastructure at the stadium would have to take place should Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel’s sides face off in the Midlands, however, UEFA are thought to be committed to Istanbul at this moment in time.

Villa still have three home league fixtures to fulfil before the end of the season, with fans set to return for the visit of Chelsea on the final day.

Villa fans react

@villareport shared Dorsett’s claims on Twitter on Thursday afternoon.

It didn’t take long for a number of Villa fans to go wild at the update, with one describing it as ‘unreal’.

Bent urges Palace to re-sgn Loftus-Cheek

Marcus Bent has exclusively told Football FanCast that Crystal Palace should re-sign Ruben Loftus Cheek this summer.

The midfielder is currently on loan at Fulham, but with the Londoners on course to be relegated, Loftus Cheek will return to Chelsea at the end of the season.

But the England man has hardly featured for the Blues in recent seasons, and with Chelsea boasting a number of talented midfielders, Loftus Cheek isn’t likely to be given an opportunity under Thomas Tuchel.

And with reports suggesting that he’s not in Tuchel’s plans, Crystal Palace are interested in bringing him back, but this time permanently.

£60,000-a-week man Loftus Cheek enjoyed a productive stint across London three seasons ago, scoring twice, whilst laying on four assists in his 25 Premier League appearances, and Bent believes that a return to Selhurst Park would be a wise move.

He told Football FanCast:

“Good player, I like him. He’s experienced in a sense, he’s been around. He’s not an attacking midfielder, but has got the legs to move around.

“He wouldn’t be moving far from Chelsea, it just depends on his price tag. I’m not sure how much they would want for him but Villa and Palace are looking to get him.”

Exclusive: Pundit says De Gea’s Manchester United career is over

Dean Windass has exclusively told Football FanCast that David De Gea’s days at Manchester United are numbered.

The Spaniard was regarded as the best goalkeeper in the world at one stage in his career, but his form has dipped over the previous few seasons, which has cost him his place on the international stage.

Despite mistakes cropping up, £375,000-a-week man De Gea has continued to remain as United’s first-choice goalkeeper, although his position at Old Trafford is currently under serious threat for the first time in his United career from youngster Dean Henderson.

De Gea has started all-but seven of Manchester United’s Premier League games this season, missing the Palace, City and West Ham games due to personal reasons, but returned to the squad for the wins over Brighton and Manchester United, although former Sheffield United loanee Henderson kept his place.

The experienced-shotstopper has more than two years remaining on his Old Trafford deal, but to couple with reports suggesting that he’s been offered to the likes of Real Madrid this summer, Windass expects him to leave the Red Devils.

“His time is up. It’s been on the lips for ages now. I don’t think De Gea is the answer, I agree with Roy Keane, he makes too many mistakes. He’s been a quality goalkeeper, but sometimes you get rid of the deadwood, and he’s like the deadwood.

“Henderson has done well, course he has, and I think De Gea’s days are over. He’s still linked with Real Madrid, and if De Gea wants to go, then I’d be happy to watch Henderson in goal.”

LFC must hand Jones a start vs Leeds

After their elimination from the UEFA Champions League in midweek, Liverpool turn their attentions back to the Premier League tonight by travelling to Elland Road to take on Leeds United.

Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to secure three points as the Reds aim to secure a top four finish, despite the looming prospect of the Super League proposals.

In order to do that, he must start midfielder Curtis Jones for the first time in the league since early March.

At just the age of 20, the Reds’ academy graduate is already the club’s highest-scoring midfielder this season with four goals. Couple this with the four assists that he has already managed to accumulate and that takes his total direct goal contributions to eight.

For comparison, the next most productive midfielder in the Reds’ squad is Georginio Wijnaldum who has only managed to score on three occasions, whilst having not managed to tee up his teammates at all.

Considering Jones has started just 21 matches in all competitions for the reigning Premier League champions, that is a remarkable achievement.

[snack-amp-story url=” https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news%2c-transfer-rumours-and-more-asensio-vlahovic-van-dijk-alberto-pedri” title=” Read the latest Liverpool news, transfer rumours and more… “]

It is no surprise then when looking at Jones’ statistics per match, he continues to outperform his somewhat more illustrious teammates.

According to WhoScored, the £27m-rated midfielder attempts one shot per game, a figure not matched by any other Liverpool option in the centre of the park.

Meanwhile, only Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara account for more key passes per 90 minutes than Jones in league play, whilst the latter only just outdoes his 1.1 dribbles per game.

It goes without saying then that should Jones be included, the Reds will surely be more of a threat, of course, a useful asset as Liverpool attempt to seal what could be a key three points in their pursuit of a top-four finish.

Previously labelled as “unbelievable” by the Reds’ U23 coach Gary O’Neil, the England U21 midfielder simply has to be selected from the start at Elland Road if he’s passed fit after missing out against Aston Villa and Real Madrid.

Exclusive: Keith Gillespie fears for Sander Berge’s future after long-term injury

Former Sheffield United midfielder Keith Gillespie has exclusively told Football FanCast that the Blades have missed Sander Berge’s “quality”, but thinks his injury record could see him struggle for a future move away from Bramall Lane.

The Norwegian joined from Genk for a club-record fee last January, but whilst the midfielder featured in all 14 of United’s Premier League remaining 2019/20 games following his arrival, he’s been plagued with injuries this term and therefore hasn’t been able to help the club battle against relegation.

He appeared in Sheffield United’s opening 13 league matches this season, but hasn’t been available since having surgery on a tendon his leg following an injury sustained in the defeat to Manchester United before Christmas.

Berge still has more than three years remaining on his Blades contract, but with the club on the verge of relegation, is set to leave Bramall Lane this summer – with north London rivals Tottenham and Arsenal both interested in the 23-year-old.

Despite those links, Gillespie believes that Berge’s recent injuries could make a potential summer move difficult for him. He told Football FanCast:

“Berge was brought in for a lot of money and he has been injured for most of the season, so that can hinder you because you want somebody with that quality to come in and help the side.

“Berge, who’s going to come in for him? He hasn’t played that much. You don’t know how injury prone he can be, he’s missed a huge chunk of the season.

“I certainly think he would have improved Sheffield United this season.”

Celtic: Rangnick appointment could still happen

The dream appointment is still on the cards for Celtic supporters. The name Ralf Rangnick is one that’s been popular with fans and indeed, he could still make a move to Glasgow.

What’s the word?

Rangnick had been linked with the Germany job but he was also reportedly in discussions over a sporting director role at Schalke.

However, according to the man himself, that is now firmly off the table.

The 62-year-old issued a statement this weekend reading: “Schalke is very close to my heart. The overwhelmingly positive reactions from members of the Königsblauen community have influenced me and confirmed my feelings for this very special club.”

Rangnick added “I would have loved to been involved in helping Schalke on its difficult road back to its former strength. Unfortunately, due to the numerous uncertainties within the club at the moment, I do not see myself being able to take on sporting responsibility at S04 at the moment.”

This is a major twist in Celtic’s hunt for a new manager. Only a few days ago it looked as though the German’s name was one they could cross off the shortlist.

Yet, they can now firmly put him at the top of their list again.

Desmond must be buzzing

This is incredibly exciting news for Celtic fans. They were lusting after Rangnick a few months ago but it looked as though their hopes had been diminished this week.

That being said, the possibility of the German now arriving at Parkhead has been elevated.

Commentator Derek Rae revealed all the way back in November that a deal would only be struck if he was enthused by the project in Glasgow. As can be seen from his statement regarding Schalke, it takes a very particular set of circumstances for him to move.

Celtic have their own issues and uncertainties, but if he joins, it could be revolutionary for the Bhoys. That’s because of his unbelievable achievements at Leipzig.

During his stint with the Bundesliga club, he helped develop players like Timo Werner and Naby Keita, deploying a transfer strategy that was based around signing players exclusively under the age of 23.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-transfer-news-onuachu-edouard-dembele-turnbull” title=”The latest Celtic news and views!”]

Known as the professor of the high press, he was also incredibly meticulous behind the scenes. Rangnick was very demanding, expecting players to arrive at training 90 minutes early in order to undergo saliva and blood tests.

As a consequence, he was able to work out how hard his squad would be able to train. They would also test gluten and lactose and tailor diets to each individual’s requirements as a result. His methods were so meticulous that he also brought in a sleep coach.

It’s pretty evident why this would be a dream hire.

AND in other news, Fresh twist emerges in Celtic manager hunt, it’s bad news for Hoops supporters…
