Revealed: 48% of Tottenham fans want Alli dropped for Liverpool clash

Dele Alli is without a doubt one of shining stars of the Premier League – last season’s return of 18 goals in 37 top flight appearances provided enough evidence of that.

But the 22-cap England international has struggled to deliver throughout 2017/18. He hasn’t found the net in the Premier League since August and has looked almost disinterested upon facing modest opposition – especially at Wembley.

Tottenham face Liverpool in the Premier League this weekend in a clash that could go a long way to defining both of their seasons, with the Lilywhites and the Reds both hoping to qualify for the Champions League as a minimum requirement this term.

Accordingly, we asked Tottenham fans earlier this week whether Mauricio Pochettino should take the bold step of dropping Alli for such an important game.

And although the majority of those who voted in our poll still think he should start, a rather significant 48% of Tottenham fans think he shouldn’t. How would you line up Tottenham this weekend? Let us know by commenting below…

Revealed: Majority of Chelsea fans wouldn’t back Rudiger swoop

With Chelsea now just one win away from lifting the Premier League title, attention is about to shift from their performances on the pitch to how the club will fare in the transfer market this summer.

Chelsea may have been the English top flight’s best this season but no side has successfully defended the English title since 2009, so reinforcements are needed this summer if the west Londoners intend to buck the new-champions-trend.

There appears to already be some options on Antonio Conte’s radar, with The Sun claiming the Stamford Bridge boss is eyeing a £70million double raid for Roma pair Radja Nainggolan and Antonio Rudiger.

Nainggolan would be a natural fit for their dynamic two-man midfield, but the notion of signing Rudiger isn’t quite as exciting, so we asked Chelsea fans earlier this week whether they’d back a summer swoop for the latter.

And according to the results of our recent poll, the majority of Chelsea fans – 68% – think the club’s money would be better spent elsewhere. A new defender could well be in order this summer, but it appears Rudiger wouldn’t be a popular addition.

Celtic v Rangers: Three Key Battles that will decide the Old Firm Derby

The Old Firm Derby returns to the Scottish top flight this Saturday and it’s got all the makings of an absolute classic.

Indeed, both sets of fans have been waiting for this fixture ever since Rangers’ financial troubles saw them drop all the way down to the third division in 2012.

In many ways, this game has been four years in the making, as two clubs divided along political, religious and historical lines finally meet each other in the league once again.

In theory, Celtic enter this fixture as the favourites; they’re currently top of the Scottish Premiership and boast home advantage.

But Mark Warburton has assembled an exciting squad at Rangers and when it comes to the Old Firm Derby, all bets are off – it’s a fixture that almost has its own set of rules.

With that in mind, Saturday’s scoreline could well come down to who dominates the individual battles, so we’ve picked out three that could decide the Old Firm Derby….

KENNY MILLER VS KOLO TOURE

With Kenny Miller and Kolo Toure both well into their 30s, this battle will be a case of mind over body.

Indeed, Miller’s always compensated for a lack of natural athleticism with intelligence around the box, but Toure’s got the vast experience to counteract that, plying his trade with Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool before moving to Celtic Park.

That being said, the Rangers striker has already netted twice this season, whilst the Hoops aren’t the strongest defensively – conceding four times in three games thus far.

Kieran Tierney vs James Tavernier

They say full-back is now one of the most important positions on the pitch, evolving into a role that requires fantastic stamina, defensive awareness and contribution going forward in equal measure.

With that in mind, the Old Firm Derby could well be decided by Kieran Tierney and James Tavernier, Celtic’s left-back and Rangers’ right-back respectively.

Both like to overlap and get involved at the other end (Tavernier scored 15 times last season), so this battle could come down to who balances their defensive and offensive duties best.

Scott Brown vs Joey Barton

A straight-up skirmish of who can be nastier without getting sent off, the midfield battle between Scott Brown and Joey Barton epitomises the Old Firm Derby.

The two have already partook in some media trash-talk so expect stud-raised shin-shattering tackles aplenty in the middle of the park.

That being said, neither Barton nor Brown are simply thugs; the Celtic captain has a knack for popping up with a goal from midfield, whilst Rangers’ summer signing has the intelligence and passing range to control the game via the ball.

Kylian Mbappe, that is outrageous! France captain completes hat-trick against Gibraltar with stunning lob to bring up 300 career goals

Kylian Mbappe completed his hat-trick against Gibraltar on Saturday in some style, with a lob from long range bringing up 300 career goals.

Mbappe scored ridiculous lob effortCompleted hat-trick on the nightFrenchman celebrates reaching 300 career goalsWHAT HAPPENED?

The France captain had already found the net twice as his side began an utter annihilation of their opponents – but he saved the best until last for his third strike. Spotting the goalkeeper off his line, Mbappe fired a shot mere yards from the halfway line, completing a fine hat-trick and reaching a staggering 300 career goals at just 24 years of age. The Paris Saint-Germain star is now third on France's all-time goalscoring list, too.

Mbappe is arguably the best player in the world right now but he is yet to pick up a Ballon d'Or, with 36-year-old Lionel Messi the latest winner of the award. The 24-year-old will be targeting those accolades in years to come and now he has brought up 300 career goals, he may have his sights on becoming one of the greatest goalscorers of all time.

Remarkably, Messi has 821 goals in his career, whereas 38-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo is on 865 so far. On top of individual achievements, Mbappe will be targeting the biggest trophies – either at PSG or another club in the future.

Forget Mo Salah and Rodrygo – Bukayo Saka is the best right winger in the world!

The Arsenal and England winger is setting new standards this season for club and country

Gareth Southgate bit his lip when he was asked after England’s 2-0 win against Ukraine whether there was any other right winger in the world who is playing at the level of Bukayo Saka right now.

“I’m not going to get drawn into where he sits in world football,” Southgate laughed. “That would start to put us in danger of doing all the things that we shouldn’t be doing with him.

“He’s progressing brilliantly and he’s a joy to work with. We should leave it at that.”

It was as diplomatic a response as you would expect from someone like Southgate.

But in all honesty, he could have just said that Saka is at the top of the world pile right now because no-one would have argued with him.

Mohamed Salah can step aside, so can the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Rodrygo. Saka is currently the best right winger on the planet. It’s that simple.

    Special Saka

What Saka’s doing for Arsenal this season and what he did for England on Sunday against Ukraine is all the evidence you need to back up that statement.

And while Southgate was probably right not to say it out loud, he doesn’t really need to worry about praise going to Saka’s head because the 21-year-old is not the type of player to let that happen.

That’s what makes him so special. He has the world at his feet and he knows it, but he’ll just take it all in his stride, as he always does.

“His hunger and his humility is what’s got him on a good path,” Southgate said.

“He has all the attributes to continue to improve and learn because that’s how he’s wired and I don’t see that changing with how he is and with how his family are.”

    'He plays with real belief'

Saka’s goal against Ukraine at Wembley was one of a player brimming with confidence.

It was his eighth goal for his country. Only four players – Dixie Dean (16), Jimmy Greaves (16), Wayne Rooney (12) and Michael Owen (10) – have scored more for England at the time of his current age (21 years, 202 days).

When you consider he has done that while playing as a winger, that makes the achievement even more remarkable.

Saka now has four goals in his last six games for his country. He is delivering almost every time he pulls on the Three Lions shirt.

“When he’s in front of goal now he plays with real belief,” Southgate said after the victory over Ukraine. “That’s evident with his club and it’s evident with the games for us.

“You’re expecting him to score now when he goes through. I think that’s been a mentality shift as much as it’s anything technical.

"I think he knows to be a really top wide player he needs goals and assists and without doubt he’s delivered that this season.”

    A big-game player

There has been a definite change in Saka this season. He has taken on far more responsibility for Arsenal.

He may be still to turn 22, but he has already firmly established himself as one of the leaders in Mikel Arteta’s side.

The Hale End academy graduate has scored 13 goals in all competitions so far for the Gunners and prior to his brace against Crystal Palace immediately before the international break, every single one of them had either been a goal to put his side on front, or an equaliser.

That shows he has consistently stepped up in the big moments when his side has needed him this season and for a player so young to be doing that so consistently, it shows the level that he is now operating at.

"We obviously have individuals that excel to be at the level that we want," Arteta said after Saka's man of the match-winning performance against Palace earlier this month.

"But Bukayo was really, really good again, affecting the result with his contribution, especially in the opponent’s box. I’m really happy [with him].”

    Player of the season?

Many expect Erling Haaland to bag all the individual awards when they are handed out come the end of the season because of the sheer volume of goals he has scored for Manchester City.

But there is a strong argument that, based purely on all-round performance, Saka has been the stand out performer in the Premier League this year.

He has been directly involved in 23 goals in his last 34 appearances for club and country, scoring 16 goals while setting up a further seven. Those are incredible numbers for a 21-year-old winger.

“I am not going to be the guy who is going to judge,” Oleksandr Zinchenko said when asked if his Arsenal team-mate is the best player in England following Ukraine’s defeat at Wembley.

“Definitely, he’s one of them, that’s for sure. He’s an amazing player. We knew that. He’s on fire at the moment.”

Duckett ton gives Lancashire the runaround

A brilliant century from opener Ben Duckett ensured Northamptonshire enjoyed a productive day against LV= County Championship Division Two leaders Lancashire at Old Trafford

ScorecardBen Duckett dominated the first two sessions of the match with a fluent hundred•Getty ImagesA brilliant century from opener Ben Duckett ensured Northamptonshire enjoyed a productive day against LV= County Championship Division Two leaders Lancashire at Old Trafford.Twenty-year-old Duckett struck 134 off 151 balls as the visitors recovered from the loss of Kyle Coetzer in just the second over of the game to reach a commanding total of 388 for 6 at the conclusion of a tough three sessions for the home side.Alex Wakely and Richard Levi chipped in with half-centuries while Northants will be confident of gaining maximum points on Tuesday with Adam Rossington unbeaten on 79.Lancashire started well after losing the toss, with Kyle Jarvis pinning Kyle Coetzer in front in the second over, but Duckett and Wakely then combined excellently to put Northants on top. With his captain happy to play the support act, former England Under -19s player Duckett revelled in his role as enforcer as he dispatched first Tom Bailey for six before targeting the spin bowling of Simon Kerrigan and Aaron Lilley as the morning session came to an end.The pair continued their serene progress from the morning session, compiling a second-wicket partnership of 170, before Australian James Faulkner uprooted Wakely's leg stump with a superb yorker, the skipper departing for a watchful 56.Duckett finally fell in the 50th over the day when he became spinner Kerrigan's 250th first-class wicket after the left armer trapped the century maker lbw for a thrilling 134 off only 151 balls, which included 19 fours and two sixes.Just two balls later, Kerrigan was celebrating again when Rob Keogh (19) popped a catch up to Lancashire skipper Steven Croft at short leg to give the home side some hope of a recovery as the afternoon progressed. The double wicket burst came as some relief to the beleaguered left-armer after his first over went for 15, during a period when he and fellow spinner Lilley were not allowed to settle by Duckett's aggressive stroke making. All hopes of a Lancashire comeback were slowly extinguished by the fifth wicket pair of Levi and Rossington, who steadied any nerves in the hour before tea to take the visitors to 272 for 4 at the break and then continued their steady but effective batting in the evening session. The new ball was negotiated without undue worry as both players reached their half-centuries with ease in the face of increasing frustration from the seamers, who struggled with both the unhelpful pitch and unsympathetic overhead conditions on a chastening day for the previously effective Lancashire attack. With the end of the day in sight, the partnership had extended to 142 when Levi uncharacteristically chased a wide one from Faulkner and nicked behind to wicket keeper Alex Davies for 57 before the Australian suddenly found himself on a hat-trick after Josh Cobb edged the next ball to Steven Croft at second slip.Rossington and former Lancashire allrounder Steven Crook dealt with the remaining five overs without any major scares to leave Lancashire with much to ponder going into the second day's play.

Fawad and Voges in Ashes squad

Legspinner Fawad Ahmed and veteran batsman Adam Voges have both been included in Australia’s squads for the upcoming Ashes tour and the two-Test series in the West Indies that precedes it. Peter Nevill has been confirmed as the backup wicketkeeper to Brad Haddin, while there was no room for Glenn Maxwell, James Faulkner or Joe Burns.Shaun Marsh was preferred to fellow Test incumbent Burns and joins his brother Mitchell Marsh in the 17-man Ashes squad. Peter Siddle was named in the group after being dropped from the Test side during the summer and he is expected to feature in the Tests in the Caribbean, with Ryan Harris staying home for the birth of his first child and joining the touring party for the Ashes.Fast bowler James Pattinson was deemed unavailable for the West Indies tour after suffering an injury to his left hamstring during the Sheffield Shield final, and he will be assessed by medical staff over the coming weeks. Pattinson’s breaking down in the Shield final did not prevent Victoria’s win, which came thanks in large part to Fawad’s eight-wicket haul in the first innings. As an asylum seeker from Pakistan, Fawad’s Australian citizenship was rushed through in 2013 to have him available for the Ashes but he was not chosen for that tour, and had to settle for debuts in ODI and Twenty20 international cricket. However, his legspin has bewitched batsmen all over Australia this summer and he topped the Shield tally with 48 victims at 24.85.The selectors have also included the leading run scorer this season. Voges plundered 1358 runs at 104.46 in the Shield this summer to make himself almost impossible to ignore, and his experience will make him a valuable member of the squad. Voges was first part of a Test squad when he was called up during the 2006-07 Ashes in Australia, but nearly a decade later still does not have a baggy green.Nevill’s selection as the backup wicketkeeper ahead of Matthew Wade, who was chosen for the 2013 Ashes, comes after a summer in which he piled up 764 Shield runs at 76.40, including a career-best 235 not out against Tasmania in Hobart last month. Nevill toured the West Indies in 2012 when Brad Haddin flew home for personal reasons, but is yet to debut for Australia in any format.”Basically the white ball’s been put down and we’re into red ball cricket,” National Selector Rod Marsh said. “We’re not playing it at home, and obviously we’ve been a powerhouse at home in recent series, but we haven’t done that well overseas and it’s time we got that right. We’ve hopefully picked sides that will be very, very good overseas and we hope to win both the series in the West Indies and we’d be delighted if we won the Ashes – that would be a fair 12 months I reckon.”Fawad Ahmed has been named in Australia’s Test squad•Getty Images

Marsh explained that Voges’ sheer weight of runs had pushed him ahead of Joe Burns, who played the last two Tests of the home summer but will now travel with Australia A to India, where he has never played before, to gain experience with an eye towards 2016 and series away to Sri Lanka and India.”He had a magnificent Shield season, absolutely no doubt about that,” Marsh said of Voges. “I looked at him on four or five occasions, maybe more, this year. and I thought ‘I don’t know how anyone is going to get this bloke out’. He was that dominant, but it wasn’t only the fact he made 1300-odd runs, it was the way he made them. It was as good as any Sheffield Shield batting I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen some good stuff.”Pure weight of runs, and the way in which he got those runs [put Voges ahead of Burns]. You could just see Test player written all over him. Mark Waugh saw him bat, Trevor Hohns saw him bat, I saw him bat, all the state coaches, all the state talent managers. Everyone said the same thing – surely we can’t all be wrong.”It’ worked out quite nicely for Joe in a lot of ways in as much as he will be going to India, where he’s never played cricket, he’ll have two four-day matches and five one-day matches in India, and I reckon that will be very good for his overall development as a batsman.”Although none of the inclusions were especially surprising, it was notable that neither Faulkner nor Maxwell made the squad after both playing key roles in Australia’s recent World Cup triumph. Ashton Agar was also considered a possible candidate for the second spinning position, but Fawad’s credentials this summer were too strong.”Forty-eight wickets is a pretty good season, and it wasn’t only the fact he got 48 wickets, it was the way he bowled,” Marsh said. “He bowled beautifully all summer and him being a legspinner as opposed to a finger spinner probably also gave him a slight advantage because, believe it or not, Australia’s always looking for legspinners. We have a proud history of legspinning in this country, and we want that to continue.”He doesn’t bowl too much rubbish, and he creates a lot of pressure. He’s able to have men around the bat in most instances and he keeps asking the batsmen questions. That’s what most good spinners do, you need to be able to remain on as a legspinners. It is all very well ripping the ball, but if you bowl two full tosses, two long hops, it’s very hard for the captain to keep you on. He maintains good economy and he asks many questions of both left and right-handed batsmen.”Cricket Australia has also named its list of 19 contracted players for the 2015-16 season, with Siddle the notable exclusion from last year despite being named in the Test squads. Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh and Pat Cummins have all joined the list from outside the contract list named this time last year for the 2014-15 season.George Bailey retained his contract despite effectively being viewed as an ODI-only player, and being dropped from the side during the recent World Cup. Clarke’s retirement from one-day cricket could pave the way for Bailey to return as a regular member of the team when they next convene for a series later this year.Australia A squads have also been named for a series of four-day and one-day games in India throughout July, with Usman Khawaja named to captain the team in both formats alongside Matthew Wade as his deputy.Test squad Michael Clarke (capt), Steven Smith (vice-capt), Fawad Ahmed, Brad Haddin, Josh Hazlewood, Ryan Harris (Ashes only), Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Peter Nevill, Chris Rogers, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, Adam Voges, David Warner, Shane Watson.Contract list George Bailey, Michael Clarke, Pat Cummins, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Brad Haddin, Ryan Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, James Pattinson, Chris Rogers, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, David Warner, Shane Watson.Australia A four-day squad Usman Khawaja (capt), Matthew Wade (vice-capt), Ashton Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Joe Burns, Pat Cummins, Andrew Fekete, Peter Handscomb, Travis Head, Nic Maddinson, Glenn Maxwell, Steve O’Keefe, Gurinder Sandhu, Marcus Stoinis.Australia A one-day squad Usman Khawaja (capt), Matthew Wade (vice-capt), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Cameron Boyce, Joe Burns, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Pat Cummins, Callum Ferguson, Peter Handscomb, Travis Head, Chris Lynn, Gurinder Sandhu, Adam Zampa.
