Afghanistan make their big-screen debut on Saturday’s morning show, a sleeper that suddenly became a smash hit by defying every script written for them. A team from a war-torn, dysfunctional country, with half their players born in refugee camps, they narrowly missed qualifying for the 2007 World Cup but are making up for it with this tournament. They have surprised many an Associate team during their stunning rise from Division Five to a world event. Yet they will know that what they are going to face – the pace of Zaheer Khan, the spin of Harbhajan Singh, the might of MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh – is nothing like anything they have faced so far.India will know Afghanistan are not quite Bangladesh, but it was a first-match loss to perceived minnows three years ago that knocked them out of the 50-over World Cup. They have not played a warm-up match this time, know little about their opponents and will want to be as alert as against their other group-mates, South Africa. On the other hand, they would like this slow transition from the IPL to top-level international cricket. A win against Afghanistan, no matter what the margin, will more or less assure them a place in the next round. How the tournament would love an upset, though. The only dampener is the timing of the match. Almost all India games in this tournament have 9.30am starts – 7pm in India – as opposed to the usual evening timings for matches played in the West Indies. Clearly the TV audience gets a preference to the islands hosting the event, only three years after a disastrously organised World Cup. Who will ‘Bring It On’ at 9.30am?Form guide (most recent first)Afghanistan WLWWW

Watch out for…Suresh Raina is coming off a successful IPL, where he was Man of the Final, and gave Sachin Tendulkar a fight for the Man-of-the-Tournament award. Will he be able to carry that promise into a big tournament, after having flattered to deceive often?Mohammad Nabi, an offspinning allrounder, was the leading wicket-taker at the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers, with 13 wickets at 10.53 to ease Afghanistan’s way. He scored 58 on his ODI debut and 102 in his first first-class game, and although he doesn’t have a body of work behind him in Twenty20s, he has a strike-rate of 134.24 for his 98 runs.Team newsTwenty20 is not where you experiment, not even against Afghanistan. They might not have had a warm-up match, but don’t expect Indian to experiment too much, for this is an important game.India: (possible) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 M Vijay, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 Ravindra Jadeja/Yusuf Pathan, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Praveen Kumar/R Vinay Kumar, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Ashish Nehra.Afghanistan: (possible) 1 Karim Sadiq, 2 Noor Ali, 3 Mohammad Shahzad (wk), 4 Nowroz Mangal (capt), 5 Hamid Hassan, 6 Mirwais Ashraf, 7 Mohammad Nabi, 8 Samiullah Shenwari, 9 Asghar Stanikzai, 10 Shapoor Zadran, 11 Raees Ahmadzai.Pitch and conditionsGoing by warm-ups, this seems to be a high-scoring venue, and one for giant-killing: inside three days, Zimbabwe have successfully defended 173 and 143 against Australia and Pakistan respectively. Zimbawe’s spinners, and Shahid Afridi seem to have enjoyed themselves. What will interest India a bit more is the forecast for scattered showers. A washed-out match against a minnow team can seriously jeopardise progress in such an event.Stats and trivia This will be the first Twenty20 international for Gros Islet. Afghanistan’s 66.67% is a better success-rate than India’s 55% in Twenty20 internationals, but Afghanistan have played only six matches, and that too against Associate teams.Quotes”I don’t take my opponents lightly. At the end of the day you have to win whichever team you play… Our preparation will remain the same as if you are playing the best opponent in world cricket.”
“I know there will be pressure; there will the pressure of television, the pressure of the crowd, but they are quick learners and I hope they will adjust to it.”
Kabir Khan, Afghanistan’s coach, knows business is about to pick up.

Arsenal fans slam Lacazette vs Burnley

Many Arsenal fans have been slamming the performance of Alexandre Lacazette in their 0-0 draw at home to Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Frenchman was guilty of squandering a number of very good chances for the Gunners, including one in the second half where there was an empty net glaring and he poked his shot wide.

He did not have the best of games in general, being the only Arsenal player to record fewer touches (31) than his own goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale (42), while he also lost out on three of his duels and gave the ball away eight times in total (SofaScore).

With two points dropped at home to rock-bottom Burnley, Mikel Arteta must be thinking about signing a top striker between now and the end of the January transfer window, considering the number of chances that Lacazette missed as he failed to hit the target with any of his three shots.

Yusuf Pathan stuns Maharashtra with 40-ball ton

A round-up of the action from the sixth day of matches in the 2009-10 Vijay Hazare Trophy

Cricinfo staff16-Feb-2010West ZoneYusuf Pathan entered the record books as he slammed the third-fastest hundred in List A history, off 40 balls, to help Baroda stun Maharashtra at the Sardar Patel Stadium C Ground. Chasing 231, Pathan walked in at the 23rd over with the score at 99 for 3. By the 37th over, he had finished the game. Given his performance at the Duleep Trophy not long ago, his call-up to the Indian ODI team to take on South Africa was no surprise.Maharashtra opted to bat first and were struggling at 143 for 7 before Ganesh Gaikwad and Azhar Ansari revived them with a stand of 77. Abhimanyu Chauhan was the most effective bowler with figures of 3 for 28. Baroda opener Kedar Devdhar got the team off to a good start with a quick 62 off 64 balls but the biggest shock was in store for Maharashtra when Pathan walked in. He smashed six sixes in his first 20 balls to get to his half-century and the carnage continued. He smashed four more sixes and eight fours in total in his unbeaten 108, off 42 balls. With his twin frenetic centuries in the Duleep Trophy final recently, Pathan sent another timely reminder to the national selectors.Centuries by Chirag Pathak and Cheteshwar Pujara helped Saurashtra ease to an eight-wicket win over Gujarat at the Sardar Patel Stadium B Ground. Their 171-run stand for the second wicket took the game away from Gujarat as they chased down the target of 237 in the 46th over. Gujarat’s charge was led by their captain Niraj Patel who hit 92. Coming in at the fall of the first wicket in the first over, Patel stayed till the 44th, steadying the innings with a 124-ball knock. Jayesh Odedra was the best bowler, taking three wickets. Saurashtra lost Jaydev Shah for a duck but from then on it was all Pathak and Pujara. Pathak was more aggressive, scoring 101 off 94 balls while Pujara remained unbeaten on 109 off 136 balls.Central ZoneNaman Ojha continued his splendid form in the tournament and together with Harpreet Singh laid the foundation for Madhya Pradesh’s massive win over Railways at the Maharani Usharaje Trust Cricket Ground. Both struck breezy centuries and teamed up for a 184-run stand for the third wicket stand that spelt doom for Railways. While Ojha smashed 21 fours and six sixes during his 143-ball 167, Harpreet hit eight fours and eight sixes en route to 111 off 71 balls, as Madhya Pradesh finished on a colossal 412 – the highest List-A score at the domestic level. Railways were always behind the eight ball during the chase, as right-arm fast bowler TP Sudhindra tore into the top order. Yere Goud resisted with 77, but left-arm spinner Ankit Sharma claimed 3 for 52, to ensure victory by 184 runs.Tanmay Srivastava’s 118 went in vain as Uttar Pradesh lost narrowly by eight runs to Rajasthan at the Emerald High School Ground but still qualified for the second stage. Chasing 264, Srivastava was at the crease till the 49th over but the support was not forthcoming enough to help UP past the finish line. Earlier, Ashok Menaria and Hemang Badani hit 70s to lead Rajasthan’s charge. UP lost wickets at regular intervals in their chase and Rajasthan had the edge when they had the opposition at 173 for 7. But an eighth-wicket stand between Srivastava and B Kumar gave UP hope before Rajasthan hit back and won the match in the final over, with UP needing nine off six balls.North ZoneShikhar Dhawan’s blistering 155 provided Delhi with a late lift to their campaign, beating Haryana by 58 runs at the Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium in Rohtak. The left-hand opener was in terrific touch, and combined well with captain Virat Kohli (96) to put on a huge 215-run stand for the second wicket. Sixteen fours and four sixes during Dhawan’s unbeaten knock went a long way in ensuring Delhi’s 308 for 3. Haryana found the going tough from the start and despite captain Joginder Sharma’s fighting 87, fell short. Left-arm spinner Vikas Mishra helped himself to 4 for 50, as Haryana capitulated in 47.5 overs.A sparkling century from wicketkeeper Uday Kaul helped Punjab continue their winning ways with a six-wicket win against Services at the Tata Energy Research Institute Oval in Gurgaon. Put in, Services made a strong start with openers Tahir Khan (67) and Sumit Singh (77) putting on 154 by the 31st over. The platform wasn’t used by the rest though, as right-arm seamer Taruwar Kohli swung the momentum Punjab’s way with a five-for. Achieving the target of 223 was made easier with a second-wicket stand of 70 between Kaul and Ravi Inder Singh (61). Kaul continued the charge, hitting 13 fours en route to an unbeaten 101 off 104 balls, as Punjab reached home in 39.2 overs.Right-hander Dhruv Mahajan stroked a classy century but ended up on the losing side as Himachal Pradesh coasted to a six-wicket win against Jammu & Kashmir at the Shah Satnam Ji Stadium in Sirsa. Mahajan’s 127 off 117 balls, comprising 12 fours and three sixes, was the mainstay of the HP innings and the No. 6 bastman was given good support by Parvez Rassol (59). But the lack of sizeable contributions meant HP finished on 255. Hemant Dogra’s 64 at the top of the innings, steadied J&K’s chase, but it was Mukesh Sharma who stole the limelight with a quickfire 96, including nine fours and two sixes. A 114-run third-wicket stand with Hemant and 82 with captain Paras Dogra (60 not out) was enough to secure victory by the 39th over.East ZoneIt might just be too late for Jharkhand to make it the next stage even as they edged out Tripura by two wickets at the Ravenshaw College Ground in Cuttack. Tripura, after being invited to bat, managed to reach 61 for no loss by the 16th over, but despite Bappa Das’ unbeaten 61 ended on 241 for 8. The Jharkhand top-order wobbled during the reply, but at 71 for 4, Ishank Jaggi and Rajiv Kumar held the reins firm, and notched up half-centuries each. It was a field day for Rajib Dutta as well behind the stumps, as he took five catches, but even as the wickets fell No. 9 Kuldeep Sharma held his nerve with a 28-ball 33 to see Jharkhand through with five balls to spare.Assam’s dismal campaign continued as they suffered their third loss in as many games, against Orissa at the Barabati Stadium. Paresh Patel’s well-compiled 78 at the top of the order was supplemented by Rakesh Mohanty’s 95-ball 73 during the middle stages, as the hosts piled up 288 after Assam chose to field. The Assam openers began well, led by Parvez Aziz’s 62, but Bibhudutta Pandey’s double-strike pegged them back. Biplab Samantray dented the middle order with 3 for 24, kept afloat by Deepak Sharma’s swift 50. Mohanty capped off a wonderful day with three late-order wickets as Orissa won by 51 runs to take top spot temporarily.South ZoneIt was a close finish at the Gurunanak College Ground in Chennai as Tamil Nadu beat Andhra by two wickets. Chasing 241, TN lost their way at 93 for 5, but a partnership of 110 for the sixth wicket between K Vasudevadas and R Ashwin revived their hopes. They stumbled again towards the end before H Gopinath steered them home with an aggressive 28. The win was set up by Vijaykumar Yomahesh who took five wickets. The Andhra opener Hemal Watekar hit 53 but the middle order couldn’t stitch together big stands. Syed Sahabuddin and Manoj Sai added 74 for the seventh wicket to push the score to 240. TN were given a rousing start by Abhinav Mukund but lost their way when they lost three wickets for nine runs. But Vasudevadas and Ashwin restored order. But when both fell by the 47th over, there was hope for Andhra. Vasudevadas missed his century by six runs. However, Gopinath saw them through those anxious moments.S Sriram’s 148 off 110 balls dominated the proceedings at the MRF Pachyappa’s Ground as Goa routed Kerala by 124 runs. The target of 323 was too hot to handle for Kerala and in the end, they failed to reach 200. Goa captain Swapnil Asnodkar got the team off to a brisk start with a quick 77 off 80 balls. Sriram, who came in at the fall of the second wicket, bashed the bowling around and remained unbeaten till the end, smashing 13 fours and two sixes in his 110 ball innings. Nizar Niyas, the right-arm seamer, picked up four wickets but also leaked 80 runs in the process. Kerala needed big partnerships to chase the target but the batsmen couldn’t cope. Rohan Prem was the only batsman to score a fifty and there were only two half-century stands in the innings. Amit Yadav, who failed with the bat, took three wickets as Kerala were bowled out in the 44th over.Half-centuries by Robin Uthappa and CM Gautam and a combined bowling performance by Karnataka’s bowlers helped them beat Hyderabad by 81 runs at the CPI Pistons Ground. Uthappa led a brisk stand of 93 with an aggressive 51 off 34 balls. The fifth and sixth wickets added 61 and 75 respectively to push Karnataka to a score of 300 plus. Stuart Binny made a quick 41 off 34 balls, Raju Bhatkal hit a run a ball 38 while Gautam was unbeaten on 68. Chasing 318, Hyderabad made good progress at the start with Ambati Rayudu hitting 54 and Ravi Teja 40. But the Karnataka spinners struck quickly to reduce Hyderabad to 113 for 5. They never really recovered from that position and were bowled out for 236, with Neeraj Bist remaining unbeaten on 70.

Steven Gerrard must unleash Cameron Archer

Despite sufferng his first defeat as Aston Villa manager in midweek with their 2-1 loss against Manchester City, Steven Gerrard has made a positive impact on the Midlands club by winning his first two games in charge after a poor run of five defeats prior to his arrival.

One player who could well become an important figure for Villa and Gerrard in the future is young striker Cameron Archer.

Despite being left out of the squad for Gerrard’s first three games in charge, the 19-year-old was beginning to get some senior Premier League minutes under his belt prior to the new manager’s arrival, with 24 minutes from three substitute appearances under his belt.

As a product of Villa’s youth academy, Archer has made 17 appearances for their under-18 side, scoring two goals and supplying one assist, as well as making 34 appearances for the under-23 team, for whom he has scored 16 goals and provided seven assists.

Labelled a “confident” player in the past by Kevin Phillips, the teenager has scored four goals in his six appearances so far for Villa’s first team, highlighting his attacking talents at such a young age.

Taking this into account and the fact that Danny Ings, who will turn 30 next July, is currently out injured and has a worrying history in that regard, Archer could not only be a good short-term attacking option for Gerrard to call upon if needed – he could also save Villa millions in potential future transfer fees as a long-term figure in the squad and a possible replacement for Ings.

Even though there have been some recent reports suggesting that fellow Villa youth starlet Carney Chukwuemeka may not sign a new deal at the club, it should be their main priority to secure Archer’s long-term future at Villa Park given that his current contract is set to expire in the summer.

If Gerrard doesn’t plan on giving Archer any senior minutes this season, perhaps it could be the best option for all parties if they loan him out to a club where he would be playing regularly, as long as they get him to sign a long-term deal at Villa first.

Liam Plunkett called up as cover

After being hit by a spate of injuries, England have called up Durham fast bowler Liam Plunkett as cover for the first two one-dayers in South Africa

Cricinfo staff17-Nov-2009After being hit by a spate of injuries, England have called up Durham fast bowler Liam Plunkett as cover for the first two one-dayers in South Africa.A growing injury list which includes three first-choice bowlers – Graeme Swann (rib), James Anderson (knee) and Stuart Broad (shoulder) – and two senior batsmen, Paul Collingwood and Alastair Cook (both with back complaints), forced England to use bowling coach Ottis Gibson as a fielder briefly during the warm-up match against South Africa A in Potchefstroom on Tuesday.Plunkett, who was already part of the Test squad, will fly out to join the limited-overs squad on Wednesday. It has been more than two years since he played an ODI; the last of his 27 England appearances was against West Indies in Nottingham in July 2007. He had a successful first-class season but was less effective in the domestic one-dayers, taking 14 wickets at 39.07 in 16 outings for Durham.England play the first of their five one-dayers against South Africa on Friday in Johannesburg.

A wet beginning to the season

A round-up for the first round of Sri Lanka’s Premier League Tier A and Tier B

Sa'adi Thawfeeq14-Oct-2009Tier AThe opening weekend of a new season of Premier League Tier A matches was affected by bad weather with only defending champs Colombo Colts and Nondescripts CC managing to squeeze out victories. The season got off to a wet beginning with not a ball being bowled in any of the matches on the opening day.On the second day the Colts immediately made their intentions clear by bowling Ragama CC for 117 Havelock Park. Put into bat on a wet surface, Ragama’s batting succumbed to the medium-pace of Harvin Baidwan, a 22-year-old Indian-born Canadian, who on his first-class debut captured 4 for 16 off 12 overs of tight seam bowling. Facing a deficit of 160 after Colts had declared at 277 for 6, Ragama put on a better batting display in the second innings with Indika de Saram missing out on a century by ten runs. The rest of the batting order fell to the offbreaks of Dilruwan Perera who picked up 6 for 78. The Colts were left with the formality of chasing 73 which they achieved after losing a couple.Nondescripts CC, on the verge of elimination last season, started this season in a determined manner thrashing Badureliya CC by an innings at Maitland Place. They scored 251 and made Badureliya follow-on, dismissing them for paltry totals of 131 and 107. Akalanka Ganegama, the former Sri Lanka fast bowler, with six wickets, proved a handful for the Badureliya batsmen to handle.Bloomfield fell nine runs short of overhauling Saracens’ total of 194 and obtain first-innings points finishing on 186 for 8 in Colombo, while Chilaw Marians were also unlucky against Army SC. Having declared at 173 for 3, Chilaw had Army struggling at 73 for 7 when the match ended at Panagoda. The SSC-CCC and Moors SC-Tamil Union matches ended with the first innings in progress. SSC made 138 for 4 in 41 overs and Moors 244 for 6 in 69.3 overs.Tier BLankan CC took an early lead by recording the only win despite the inclement weather that affected the remaining four games. Having conceded a first-innings lead of 54, Lankan CC came back strongly in the second innings to route Singha SC for 101 and record a four-wicket win at Katunayake. Offspinner Thamara Abeyratne was their match-winner with nine wickets.Sebastianites had to rely on the experience of Pasan Wanasinghe to pull them through to first innings points in their drawn game against Burgher RC. Chasing Burgher’s first-innings score of 168, Sebastianites slumped to 31 for 4 before Wanasinghe’s century gave them the leverage to claw back.Seeduwa Raddoluwa CC gained first-innings points over Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club at Welisara and Panadura SC gained first-innings points over Sri Lanka Air Force Sports Club at Rifle Green on a weekend where most of their rivals could not make much headway due to the weather.

Ramprakash would 'cherish' England call-up

Mark Ramprakash has yet to be contacted by Geoff Miller’s selection panel, but said he would “cherish and savour” the opportunity to make a dramatic comeback in the final Ashes Test at The Oval

Alex Brown12-Aug-2009

‘If I had known 10 years ago what I know now there’s no question I would be in a better frame of mind to approach Test cricket’•Martin Williamson

Mark Ramprakash has yet to be contacted by Geoff Miller’s selection panel, but said he would “cherish and savour” the opportunity to make a dramatic comeback for the Ashes decider at The Oval. A day after Miller told Cricinfo Ramprakash was firmly in the frame for the contentious No. 3 position after a seven-year absence from Test cricket, the Surrey batsman declared himself available for a call-up that would fall a fortnight shy of his 40th birthday.”I just think that mentally, in terms of approaching a Test match, I’m probably in the best shape I’ve ever been,” Ramprakash told the Surrey website. “I’d be thrilled like any player selected to play for England in what is now a fantastic occasion. It’s been a fascinating series, and now at the Brit Oval it’s going to be a showpiece occasion. That’s why you play the game. For any player that is selected, it’s the sort of occasion that they will savour and cherish for the rest of their careers.”I suppose (the publicity) is all a result of what happened at Headingley and not only the defeat but the manner of defeat. Of course, as England supporters we’re all disappointed with the fact that having a 1-0 lead we’ve let the Aussies back in. The speculation has probably been whipped up really through that performance. I’m no stranger to this situation. I’ve had it before when my name has been linked strongly with trips to Australia – in fact the last two trips to Australia – and also the last tour to Sri Lanka. I’ve always tried to let my performances do the talking and I believe that I’ve presented a very strong case for all those occasions and again this year. I’m happy within myself, I’m batting well and playing good cricket.”Ramprakash insists he is a far superior cricketer now to that which made a tentative Test debut against the West Indies in 1991 alongside the likes of Graham Gooch, Allan Lamb and Graeme Hick. The 39-year-old has scored 1,209 runs at 100.75 for Surrey in the Championship’s second division this season, including scores of 80 and 130 not out in his most recent match against Derbyshire. He has averaged in excess of 90 over the last four first-class seasons, and has been a dominant force at his home ground, The Oval, which will host the Ashes decider from August 20.”I’ve seen some comments and articles and I think I have to respond because people sometimes still talk like it’s 1995,” he said. “I had a very difficult start in Test cricket, there’s no doubt about that. I’ve had two careers – 1991-1997 and from 1998-onwards, where I have performed a lot better. My last Test match was in 2002 at the age of 32 and I had a difficult tour of New Zealand along with several other batsmen on some juicy pitches. But over the last few years I’ve worked very hard at my game.”I still enjoy playing with Surrey. I think as a player and a person you just keep evolving, improving and developing. I’ve completed the ECB level four coaching course, which is aimed at professional coaching and has benefited me tremendously – just knowing myself as a person and communicating with other players. I was involved for 14 weeks in a very highly pressurised reality TV show, which was something totally out of my bubble. That’s a life experience. I think if you ask anyone if they had know ten years ago what they know now then they’d all say it would have helped them a great deal.”Alec Stewart, the former England captain and current Surrey consultant, insisted Ramprakash would be a stronger candidate for the England No. 3 position than incumbent Ravi Bopara and contenders Ian Bell, Jonathan Trott, Rob Key and Marcus Trescothick.”You have to move all sentiment to one side,” Stewart said. “England’s selectors I hope will pick the best side to regain to the Ashes. Forget anything about sentiment, forget anything about looking to the future, forget anything about consistency or continuity. Go and pick the best XI that gives England an opportunity to win the Ashes.”Ramps is in my best XI. The last Test he played was seven years ago, and people are allowed to change and mature. We don’t know what Jonathan Trott will do, we don’t know what Robert Key will do. All I’m saying is that if we don’t know about people, is it not better to pick the very, very best player that we’re not sure about.”He’s a mature person. He’s comfortable. Just look at his record: he averages 91 over the last four years. It’s never been technical, he did struggle to cope with everything that was thrown at him, but he’s seven years older and he knows what a great player he is. I have no doubt that if Ramprakash is picked, he will perform.”

Hampshire cruise past Lancashire

A round-up of the latest County Championship action as Hampshire beat Lancashire and Gloucestershire swept aside lowly Middlesex

Cricinfo staff21-Jun-2009Andrew Flintoff hit a welcome half-century, but he couldn’t prevent Lancashire slumping to their second Championship defeat on the bounce as Hampshire sped to a 10-wicket victory at Liverpool with Imran Tahir proving the match-winner. Flintoff reached his fifty from 79 balls and was looking increasingly confident until he was given out caught off a top edge, a decision he didn’t seemed pleased with as a trudged off. That blow opened the door for Hampshire as Tahir spun through the order having Steven Croft and Francois du Plessis caught at short leg. Lancashire didn’t help themselves when VVS Laxman was run out trying for a second to square leg with the last eight wickets falling for 78. A target of 118 provided few problems for the visitors as Michael Carberry hit 62 off 73 balls.

The visitors resumed on a precarious 129 for 5 but soon lost Neil Dexter for 43. Shaun Udal cracked 27 while David Nash attempted to patch things together with 38, but in spite of the lower-order resistance – Chris Silverwood cracked four fours in his 26 – Middlesex were rolled for 233. This left Gloucestershire a facile target of 45 which they achieved in under 10 overs, for the loss of just William Porterfield, as Hamish Marshall flayed 28 from 16 balls to inflict yet another defeat on Middlesex, who sit forlornly second-from-bottom of the table.
