Celtic: Some at Parkhead wanted to keep Klimala

New York Red Bulls director Kevin Thelwell has recently revealed that some at Celtic wanted to keep forward Patryk Klimala at Parkhead.

The Lowdown: Klimala’s big-money deal and wage increase

Klimala made the move to the MLS last month, ending his Celtic Park career after just 15 months.

The 22-year-old cost the Hoops £3.6m back in 2020, however, Celtic sold the striker for £3.93m despite the Pole scoring just three times in 28 appearances.

Reports have suggested add-ons could take the deal up to £5m, with Klimala now on around $22,000-a-week (£15,500) stateside.

The Latest: Thelwell’s claim on the forward

New York Red Bulls director Kevin Thelwell was recently talking about Klimala to The Atheltic and admitted that some at Parkhead actually ‘didn’t want to let him go’ – an intriguing six-word admission.

“I had outstanding references on him at Celtic. There were some people there who didn’t want to let him go, didn’t feel he had the opportunity perhaps he should have done and were also saying if he did get the opportunity Celtic would have been a lot better for it.

“These are people I trust and people we trust within our network.”

The Verdict: An offer too good to turn down

Let’s be honest, the offer from New York Red Bulls was just too good to turn down. Celtic have ended up making an immediate £330,000 profit on a player who averaged a goal every nine appearances.

He failed to become a mainstay in the Hoops side and had to deal with cameo appearances from the bench.

If the bid from New York Red Bulls was less than £3m, we could understand the Hoops rejecting it and keeping faith with the forward.

However, that wasn’t the case and we don’t feel that Celtic have made the wrong decision, even if some inside Celtic Park feel they might have.

Celtic view Favre as Eddie Howe alternative

Two weeks ago it looked as though Roy Keane was set to be presented to the Celtic supporters as the Bhoys’ new manager.

However, after that move fell through, Eddie Howe has been at the height of Dermot Desmond’s agenda.

What’s the word?

The pendulum is swinging once again when it comes to uncovering the new manager of Celtic.

Howe had been the favourite over the last week but news emerged on Wednesday courtesy of his representatives that he wouldn’t be moving into a new job before the summer at the very earliest.

In a big twist to the tale, it was reported on the same day that the Hoops hierarchy have a new name they’d like to think that about; Lucien Favre.

Football Insider claim that Celtic are assessing the Swiss coach in case Howe rejects their offer.

Favre was reportedly interested in discussing the role with the Glaswegian side a few weeks ago but it wasn’t clear what their stance on the former Borussia Dortmund manager was.

Fresh information reveals they are indeed considering him, however.

Howe vs Favre

Howe’s managerial career has been a fairytale story so far. The 43-year-old took the Cherries from the brink of extinction in League Two to a team now full to the brim with Premier League television revenue.

His journey with the south-coast side is like something you’d see in a film, but it’s hard to ignore Favre’s exploits too.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-roy-keane-nicky-butt-jesse-marsch-scott-brown” title=”Latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

Indeed, supporters should be drooling over the impact he could potentially have at Parkhead.

He may have been sacked from his role with Borussia Dortmund last December but his win rate is something to marvel at. During his stint in the Rhine, the 63-year-old won 61.82% of his matches.

That’s an eye-catching number for a manager who tasted defeat just 24 times in 110 games as manager.

Defensively well-organised, he also likes his teams to attack. Only Bayern Munich (100) scored more goals than Dortmund (84) in last season’s Bundesliga for instance.

As for Howe, the differences are night and day. He might be pragmatic on the training field but the fact of the matter is that he’s never recorded a win rate over the 50% mark.

He is, of course, still a young coach, but with Celtic going through a transition period the experience of Favre might be preferable.

Favre has also gone deep in continental competition, a further string to his bow that puts him above Howe on the pedestal.

With all that said, the twist that Favre is being assessed by the hierarchy should be music to the ears of supporters.

LFC’s TAA back to his best vs Arsenal

Liverpool breathed fresh life into their push for the top four on Saturday with an utterly dominant 3-0 win against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

It was a ruthless and professional showing from the reigning Premier League champions, with Diogo Jota earning huge praise for scoring twice after being introduced from the bench.

Despite the Portuguese’s exhilarating cameo, it would not have been possible without an equally impressive performance from right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

After being left out of the most recent England squad by Gareth Southgate, he certainly looked back to his best in North London.

According to WhoScored, he was the highest-rated Liverpool player throughout the game – earning a rating of 8.25, his second-highest rating of the 2020/21 season so far in all competitions.

Alexander-Arnold was a constant threat to Arsenal throughout the game, having 94 touches of the ball which was a figure only surpassed by Thiago Alcantara and Nathaniel Phillips, showing just how much influence he had up and down that right flank.

The right-back also produced moments of quality that allowed the Reds to run away with the game. He contributed four key passes, one of those being a wonderful cross that dropped straight onto the head of Jota to power home.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-news%2c-transfer-rumours-and-more” title=”Latest Liverpool news, transfer rumours and more…”]

As a matter of fact, his crossing was once again a powerful weapon in his armoury against the Gunners. The 22-year-old supplied seven balls into the box throughout the game, as many as the entire Arsenal team combined.

Whilst Alexander-Arnold was vital from an attacking standpoint, he did not neglect his defensive responsibilities at the Emirates.

A further two tackles and three interceptions allowed Jurgen Klopp’s men to keep the hosts at bay, limiting Arsenal to just three shots throughout the entirety of the 90 minutes.

Labelled as “world-class” by Klopp following his England exclusion, Alexander-Arnold certainly proved that on Saturday and will hope to keep doing so as the Reds continue their pursuit of a top-four finish.

Mane fails to perform vs Real again

It goes without saying that Liverpool needed an exhilarating attacking performance in order to stand any chance of progressing in the UEFA Champions League.

3-1 down to Real Madrid after the first-leg, that was exactly what they produced at Anfield on Wednesday but there was just one thing missing: goals.

Jurgen Klopp’s men wasted a number of opportunities as their attacking triumvirate did not just seem quite up to the task – with Sadio Mane one of those who underperformed.

Deployed on the left-flank alongside Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah, it was another extremely quiet evening from the Senegalese forward, who has now scored just one goal since the start of March in all competitions.

According to WhoScored, the former Southampton man only had one shot throughout the entire 90 minutes, not even managing to get it on target.

He just seemed not quite up to speed in promising situations for Klopp’s men, an aspect that was encapsulated with a situation in the first-half as he trapped Trent Alexander-Arnold’s centre expertly but lost his footing just yards from goal when attempting to spin and fire towards the net.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news%2c-transfer-rumours-and-more-gravenberch-keita-mane-williams-kabak” title=”Read the latest Liverpool news, transfer rumours and more…”]

Faced up against Federico Valverde, who was shoehorned in at right-back due to an injury crisis at Real Madrid, Mane also only managed to complete one dribble.

He did manage ease away from the Uruguayan early in the first-half as Liverpool started quickly but that was about as good as it got for the Liverpool forward.

Mane’s passing was also not too inspiring. Despite completing a key pass, he could only accumulate a poor 68% pass success rate throughout the game, with only substitute Diogo Jota producing worse for the Reds.

Considering the huge importance of the match, Jurgen Klopp will certainly have been expecting more from his £100k per-week forward, whose woeful form continues. Mane has been a superstar for Liverpool since his arrival, but he’s in very poor form and his inept dispaly at Anfield let his manager down on Wednesday night.

Zungu may have played his last Rangers game

Bongani Zungu is one of several Rangers players who could face a ban this week after breaching guidelines regarding the current viral outbreak in February, which could mean that the South African international has already played his last game for the Ibrox outfit under Steven Gerrard.

As per The Athletic, Zungu – along with Nathan Patterson, Calvin Bassey, Dapo Mebude and Brian Kinnear – could all face bans depending on the outcome of a hearing which is set to take place on March 25.

The 28-year-old has spent the entire season on loan at Rangers from French side Amiens SC but has been limited to just four starts in all competitions, with the majority of his appearances under Gerrard coming from the bench.

Zungu has just 18 minutes of action under his belt since the incident in February, which certainly suggests that he is not in Gerrard’s good books; and should he receive a ban for the last few games of the season, then Rangers fans may well have seen the last of him.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read this week’s latest Rangers news, transfer rumours and more!”]

Rangers have already wrapped up league title number 55 but will be looking to finish the campaign unbeaten as they prepare for the final five league games after the international break.

Given that Jordan Jones and George Edmundson were both banned for seven games for attending a house party in September, Zungu could well be ruled out for the rest of the season if he receives a similar ban later this week.

Unfortunately for Zungu, he has hardly set the world alight in his time at Rangers, so it seems very unlikely that Gerrard will seek to bring him back on a permanent deal from Amiens in the summer.

The defensive midfielder has been unable to get in the team ahead of the impressive Glen Kamara, and given that he has failed to earn above a 7/10 WhoScored rating for any of his appearances in a Rangers shirt, it seems as if Zungu will not live long in the memory of Gers fans despite the team’s successes this season.

[freshpress-quiz id=“588789″]

Therefore, it would not be a surprise if Zungu has already made his last appearance for Rangers, as even if the ban doesn’t rule him out for all of the remaining matches, Gerrard might be better served by putting his faith in contracted Rangers players rather than the on-loan Amiens man.

Spurs dealt Lo Celso injury blow

Tottenham Hotspur will be without Giovani Lo Celso for Sunday’s Premier League clash with West Ham.

What’s the word?

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho confirmed the huge injury blow ahead of his side’s trip to the London Stadium and will also be without Sergio Reguilon, who is working his way back to fitness.

When asked about Lo Celso’s recovery from a hamstring injury, Mourinho said:

“I don’t know. Not close.

“I think Reguilon next week against Wolfsberger home match.

“Not Gio. No, no, no. Gio is still a few weeks away, and of course, we need him because he gives us lots of qualities and options, and we’ve missed him for a long time.”

Lo Celso has not played for Spurs since December 2020 and has only featured for 90′ minutes once in the Premier League in the past three months.

The setback is bad news for Mourinho, with the Lilywhites travelling to West Ham at the weekend hoping to go seventh in the Premier League.

Lost for ideas?

It’s no coincidence Lo Celso’s issues have coincided with Spurs’ recent poor run of form domestically. The Lilywhites have lost four out of their past five Premier League fixtures in a row, including a humbling 3-1 defeat at the hands of defending champions Liverpool at home, with the Argentine noticeably absent.

After initially struggling under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino, the 21-cap Argentina international has seen his fortunes transform dramatically under Mourinho, with the Portuguese boss himself even saying that he “can be an amazing player” after he inspired Spurs to victory over Ludogrets in the Europa League back in November.

And when you take a deeper look at the numbers, it’s easy to see why he’ll be such a massive miss for Mourinho against West Ham. He ranks third for key passes per game (0.8), seventh for shots (0.8), and fifth for fouls (1.4), which shows he is a real menace in almost every area.

Indeed, with an average WhoScored match rating of 7.51 in the Europa League, Lo Celso ranks the second-highest out of the entire Spurs squad, second only to Lucas Moura.

Together with Tanguy Ndombele, he has become a key part of the supply chain for Mourinho’s side, and his continued absence for such a long period of time will undoubtedly be a big blow.

Especially after the manger’s claim that the north Londoners “need him” involved in this campaign.

Since joining Spurs from Real Betis in 2019, Lo Celso has already missed 29 matches and is increasingly becoming another sicknote in the same ilk as Erik Lamela, which is why the ‘Special One’ should be hugely worried.

While he may not show it, there’s no doubting the fact that the former Chelsea manager will be harbouring concerns about his side’s chances of securing all three points against the high-flying Hammers.

AND in other news, Spurs could sign Eric Dier’s defensive partner in Milan Skriniar…
