Alviro Petersen steps down as Lions captain

South Africa batsman Alviro Petersen has stepped down as captain of the Highveld Lions franchise with immediate effect, due to his commitments with the national side. Stephen Cook will captain the team for the remainder of the first-class Sunfoil Series.”When I took over as Lions captain, my immediate focus, together with then coach Dave Nosworthy, was to build a squad who can compete in all three competitions, hence the recruitment of [Thami] Tsolekile, [Gulam] Bodi, [Imran] Tahir and [Hardus] Viljoen,” Petersen said.”We have also seen young talented cricketers emerging and also the squad mature as a whole. I do think the squad is complete now, and ready to win silverware. I would like to thank the Lions board, coaching staff, supporters and most of all the players, for their support and commitment the last three years.”I wish the new leadership team of Lions cricket all the best, while I look forward to the new challenges and opportunities in my career.”Petersen captained the side for three years, during which they played in the final round of four limited-overs competitions and qualified for the Champions League T20 twice. Lions reached the final of the latest edition of the Champions League, losing to Sydney Sixers.

Balbirnie brings Ireland A home

Andrew Balbirnie has played four ODIs for Ireland•International Cricket Council

Ireland A produced a miraculous fightback to beat Gloucestershire 2nd XI at Bath. They chased 411 to win in 92 overs on the final day. With the wicket taking an increasing amount of spin and Ireland A 98 for 3, any chance of victory looked remote. But Andrew Balbirnie played a match-winning innings, striking 19 fours in a 201-ball knock. He added 178 for the fourth wicket with Stuart Thompson, who hit 14 boundaries of his own for a 122-ball 93 but he was dismissed with135 still required to win.John Anderson – who made a first-innings 72 – arrived at the crease and he and Balbirnie added a further 79 but it was left to Balbirnie to take his side to the target.”We knew it was a flat pitch and if you got in, then you could score quickly,” Balbirnie said. “I had a bit of luck early on but as the innings progressed I got more confident and started to hit the ball cleanly. We knew we had to build partnerships and that was the key to the win. Stuart Thompson played superbly, and that was a great knock from John Anderson when things could have gone wrong.”Balbirnie had already scored a century against Gloucestershire 2nd XI, having made 100 not out at Bristol last season playing for Middlesex second XI. He also played in the World Cricket League in the Netherlands in 2010.

Internacional vence o Fla no Beira-Rio e é o novo líder do Brasileirão

All-round Afridi stars in easy win for Karachi Dolphins

A round-up of the matches from the fifth day of the Faysal Bank T20, 2011

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Sep-2011Karachi Dolphins opened their account in the tournament with a comprehensive win over Islamabad Leopards at the National Stadium in Karachi. Shahid Afridi took 3 for 20 while the others bowled economical spells to restrict Islamabad to 131 for 9. The top and middle-order batsmen got starts but didn’t push on – each of the top six reached double-figures – and their efforts in the end were inadequate. Afridi, who leads Karachi, starred with the bat as well, blasting 58 off 32 balls, including seven fours and two sixes. Rameez Raja made an unbeaten 38 and victory was sealed with 39 balls to spare.Afghan Cheetas slipped to their second defeat, falling short by 13 runs against Faisalabad Wolves at the National Stadium in Karachi. Faisalabad didn’t have a stand-out performer; Asif Hussain and wicketkeeper Mohammad Salam chipped in with 30s, while Khurram Shehzad contributed 21 in the middle order to take their team to a competitive 145. The Cheetas had it covered in the chase but faltered badly. They were cruising at 102 for 2 in the 12th over, Gulbodin Naib smashing 68 off 42 balls with 10 fours and two sixes. He had the company of Karim Sadiq, who was batting steadily, but both fell off consecutive deliveries and the innings fell apart. No batsman that followed reached double-figures, the runs dried up as the Faisalabad bowlers applied the pressure and the Cheetas only finished with 132 for 9. Faisalabad have two wins from two games.Rawalpindi Rams won their second match in two days in the Faysal Bank T20, beating Multan Tigers by five wickets in Karachi. The win was set up by a four-wicket haul, including a hat-trick, by fast bowler Mohammad Rameez and a half-century by opening batsman Awais Zia.Choosing to bat, Multan put on 151 for 9. Gulraiz Sadaf, Kamran Hussain and Ansar Javed each made 30s, but there was not much contribution from the others. Left-arm spinners Samiullah and Yasim Murtaza did most of the damage upfront, claiming two wickets apiece, before Rameez came back to run through the lower order. Zia then put on an 84-run stand with Tahir Mughal for the third-wicket to put Rawalpindi firmly on track. The pair were dismissed in quick succession by pacer Mohammad Zahid, but with just about a run a ball required off the last six overs, Rawalpindi managed to ease home in the 19th over, handing Multan their second loss in consecutive matches.

Patel steers Kongonis to weekend double

A round-up of matches from the seventh weekend in Kenya’s East African Cup and East Africa Elite League

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Oct-2011East Africa Premier LeagueRain ruined the seventh round of matches, with only Kongonis managing to play, lifting themselves one place up the table with a 49-run victory over Nairobi Buffaloes. Rakep Patel smashed a 54-ball 86 to help Kongonis on their way to a commanding 166 for 5 off 20 overs. The Buffaloes were never up with the pace, and only Collins Obuya’s 48-ball 57 spared them from a rout. Abdul Rehman was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 19 off his 4 overs and was ably assisted by Man of the Match Patel who grabbed 2 for 26.Rwenzori Warriors missed out on an almost certain four points when their match against Coast Pekee in Mombasa was rained off, but they remain well clear at the top of the table as the clash between their closest challengers Rift Valley Rhinos and Nile Knights was also washed out.

Overnight rain meant the game was restricted to another 20-over affair, and the Buffaloes lost direction after a breezy start and eventually finished on 112 for 6. Rakep Patel, was again the form batsman, making 61 from 41 deliveries, but his dismissal sparked a collapse as four wickets fell on the same score to leave Kongonis on 91 for 7. Rajesh Bhudiya settled the issue by smacking 20 off eight balls. In Kampala, Nile Knights had a comfortable their 50-run victory over Rift Valley Rhinos. Batting first, the Knights stumbled to 49 for 4 before Benjamin Musoke (62) and Davis Karashani (38) swung the match with a 100-run fifth-wicket stand and they finished on 202 for 9. The Knights opened with spinners and the move paid off as the Rhinos slid to 45 for 4 when rain halted play. A revised target and some poor fielding still left the Rhinos far too much to do.Coast Pekee continued to search for their first win in either competition as they went down to a six-wicket defeat to Rwenzori Warriors in Mombasa. Pekee limped to 90 all out in 38.1 overs and the Warriors wasted no time, taking only 12.5 overs to complete the win.

Sussex recover to move top

Sussex Sharks moved to the top of the South Group after recovering from a terrible start to convincingly beat Middlesex Panthers by 49 runs in the Friends Life t20 fixture at Lord’s.The Sharks were 2 for 2 in the second over after Chris Nash and Joe Gatting, who have both struggled for runs in the competition so far, were dismissed for ducks. But solid contributions from their three internationals, Luke Wright, Lou Vincent and Murray Goodwin, allowed them to recover to 165 for 8.When the Panthers were reduced to 61 for 4 halfway through their reply Sussex were on their way to avenging their only defeat so far at Hove last week.A well-grassed pitch played better than it looked but Sussex made a dreadful start with Nash bowled by Steven Crook’s yorker and Gatting pulling tamely to square leg to give Steve Finn the first of two wickets. But Wright and Vincent revived their side with a stand of 69 from 39 balls.Wright, Sussex’s leading scorer in the competition this season, twice cleared the ropes in his 34 off 18 balls before former team-mate Tom Smith turned one past his defences. Vincent made 44 from 32 and also hit two sixes only to be caught off a top-edged sweep and it was left to skipper Goodwin to make sure Sussex maintained their recovery.Goodwin scored 48 off 33 deliveries with four boundaries and a six and it was a surprise when he was foxed by Ryan McLaren’s slower ball, especially as McLaren’s four expensive overs had gone for 43.The Panthers used seven bowlers but a cameo from Rana Naved ul-Hasan, who made 24 from 14 balls, lifted Sussex to a total which they always looked capable of defending given the quality of their bowling attack.Middlesex were hampered by the absence of Chris Rogers, who hurt his hand when he dropped Vincent and was unable to bat, and were struggling on 41 for 4 after 6.1 overs.Paul Stirling cut to point and John Simpson, promoted to open, missed a full toss. Crook carelessly drove at a widish delivery and Dexter gave Monty Panesar a return catch immediately he came into the attack.A fifth-wicket stand of 64 between Scott Newman and Dalrymple kept their hopes alive but the asking rate was climbing all the time. When left-armer Chris Liddle returned to the attack in the 19th over he finished off Middlesex with three wickets in five balls.Liddle cleaned up Newman (44) and claimed Anthony Ireland next ball and although Finn averted the hat-trick he soon gave a tame catch to gully. Liddle finished with 4 for 20 and Middlesex had lost for the fifth time in six games.

Smith hails South Africa's determination

Graeme Smith has hailed South Africa’s determination to bounce back after a fiery Indian start that threatened to take the game away from the visitors

Firdose Moonda in Nagpur12-Mar-2011Five years ago, to the day, South Africa successfully chased 434 to beat Australia at the Wanderers. It was a historic win, featuring the highest run-chase in ODI cricket. It was a day to remember and when Graeme Smith was in the field against India on Saturday afternoon in Nagpur, memories of that game came back to him for all the wrong reasons.”On the bus this morning the team manager said to me it was the anniversary of the 438 game and at one stage I was having nightmares about chasing that,” Smith said. Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar were doing to the South African attack worse than what Adam Gilchrist and Simon Katich did that day in 2006. After 15 overs of that match, Australia were 96 without loss. India reached that point after 11.2 overs and they showed no signs of stopping. While South Africa had a stunned home crowd to deal with in Johannesburg, in Nagpur they had a boisterous Indian crowd, spurring on every run. “We were on the backend of a massive beating,” Smith said. “The noise out there was really intense.” Control was slipping from Smith’s hands and he didn’t know what to do to rein in the run flow. Two overs later, he did the only thing he thought might work and called for a time out.Robin Peterson had an lbw appeal against Sachin Tendulkar, which was clearly missing leg, but Smith asked for the review, not because he thought it was out, but because he felt the team needed a break. “It was really to bring the guys in together. The way Sachin and Viru were playing, it was difficult to connect and regroup.”The South African middle order stepped up at the right time•Associated Press

The team got into a huddle immediately and Smith began instructing. “I said to them: let’s show some composure and focus our heads and maybe we can make up the 30-40 runs extra that we’ve given away.” For the next 15 balls little changed but then the tide started turning. Johan Botha’s ability to turn the game around was on display, and even though the wickets didn’t come for at least another 20 overs the advantage began shifting. In the end, Smith was pleased to report that South Africa felt as though they had “beat our targets by miles,” during the innings break. Dale Steyn, Man of the Match for his 5 for 50, said that after the blitzkrieg South Africa would have been happy with keeping India to 340. “They kept putting up those projected scores and I kept thinking what is going on here,” he said.Steyn has had a particularly successful run in Nagpur, where he took 7 for 51 in a Test match last year and engineered the Indian collapse during the batting Powerplay on Saturday. Smith said the way his bowlers “just hung in there and pounced at the end,” was what pleased him the most about their effort in the field. There may have been some thoughts of South Africa being on too much of a high after their stunning comeback with the ball to focus on their task with the bat, but Smith said the positive vibes pushed them on. “We were on a bit of a momentum shift. We spoke a lot about partnerships and how we wanted to play.”Although the pitch was “not as free-flowing” as the Indian opening pair had made it look, South Africa stuck to the task. Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla laid the foundation, before AB de Villiers put the team on track to get over the line. Still, the untested middle order had to play their part and Smith was glad that their role ended up being vital. “This is massive for them and they would have gained a lot of confidence from this.”It ended up not being as difficult a task as the 434 they had to hunt down five years ago, but the conditions in Nagpur were tough to deal with. Smith said South Africa were careful not to be overawed and wanted to start building a legacy of being competitive in big games and pressure situations. “So many people talk about the privilege of playing in India and it is a privilege. But I also told the team that this is where a team of our quality deserves to play. We wanted to earn respect today and we did that with the way we played and the way we came back.”

Rangers eye Sunderland striker Stewart

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly now ‘keeping tabs’ on Ross Stewart ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Play-off heroics

Stewart scored the only goal of the game as Sunderland beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 in the first leg of their play-off semi-final on Friday night, charging down defender Sam Hutchinson before eventually poking the ball home, with his work rate earning high praise from Black Cats legend Kevin Phillips.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-4/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Earning the nickname the ‘Loch Ness Drogba’ dating back to his time at Ross County thanks to his battering ram style up front, that was his 25th goal of what has been a great season for him individually.

The Latest: Rangers lurking

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Pete O’Rourke has shared that the Ibrox faithful are now ‘keeping tabs’ on Stewart ahead of the summer, and it would be ‘hard’ for him to turn them down:

“It looks like he’s obviously on their wanted list, Ross Stewart. It’s been talked about now for quite a few weeks that Rangers are keeping tabs on him.

“If Rangers do come calling, it’s going to be hard for somebody like Ross Stewart – a Scottish player – to turn down their advances.”

The Verdict: Sign

Given injuries to Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe recently, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team could do with another striker in the squad, especially going into another season with an added European campaign.

Dubbed a ‘menace‘ by journalist Philip West, who writes for renowned SAFC podcasters Roker Report, Stewart has certainly proven that he knows where the goal is, and given that he has already played in Scottish football, he should be able to settle in nicely at the Teddy Bears.

Nonetheless, he has not hit his prime yet at 25 years of age, and so the summer presents the perfect time to buy him.
